I usually get a flu shot this time of year, but wondering just how beneficial it would be being that we are still under a mask mandate. Are you planning on getting the flu shot? Do you mean that wearing a mask would mean you wouldn’t need protection from the flu? If so, masks aren’t perfect, or sometimes even adequate. Second, you are probably maskless in your bubble and some/many of those people are maskless in other bubbles (unless you’re in a true circular exclusive bubble). Third, many places, including my state, county and municipality had mask mandates last flu season. And fourth, yes for me! First-second week of October so the benefit extends through the worst of a typical flue season here.

For those who say "no, because masks," please consider the swiss cheese model. This goes for COVID, flu, etc. The vaccine PLUS masks reduces risk not only to you, but also to others. ![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/36/SwissCheese_Respiratory_Virus_Interventions-ver3.0.png/2560px-SwissCheese_Respiratory_Virus_Interventions-ver3.0.png)

I started getting flu shots a few years ago when DH aged into the "more vulnerable" category. Our covid boosters won't be until November/December so there won't be a conflict.

I have almost always had a flu shot for the past 20-25 years. I taught elementary school for years, and we were always encouraged to get it. Now I work in a university setting, and I continue to get them. I have missed the vaccine twice in those years due to a lack of availability in my area, and the first time I didn't get one, I got the flu. I did get the flu once after being vaccinated, but it ended up being a very mild case.
So yes, I'm getting one! I still remember how miserable the flu was, and I do not want to be a burden on the medical system for something that can be prevented or at least made manageable by the vaccine.
ETA: I usually get mine in early October to stretch its effects through the winter. My 8-month anniversary for my COVID booster will be November 12, so I think I can still do my normal schedule for the flu shot. I am only in the office 2 days per week this year and working remotely the rest of the week. I am pretty sure we will all be on a remote schedule before I get the flu shot.

Third, many places, including my state, county and municipality had mask mandates last flu season. I don’t know anyone around here who got the flu, let alone a cold last year. I’m fairly confident that is attributed to masks, increased hand washing, use of sanitizers, and overall reduced interaction with others… all the same things that are happening to me again this year. So yeah, I do think that my risk for catching the flu is greatly reduced in part to masks.

Yes. I get it every year and have twice taken care of people who were horribly sick with H1N1.

I was making the case that masks do not mean we don’t need protection from the flu. Non-scientist me would add that another possible reason for less flu less year was that more people (like dopey me and some others I know) got the flu vaccine for the first time. Who knows?

Yes, but I usually don't get one until October or so. Somewhere between Halloween and Veteran's Day for me!

We had a flu shot prior to the COVID injection. We also have a pneumonia shot as well this year (this is only every five years) so hopefully we are well and truly protected against something.

Yes, absolutely.
About five years ago I got the flu, even after being vaccinated, due to vaccines not covering every strain each year.
It was the sickest I had been in decades.
Can't get out of bed sick.
Vomit & pee myself simultaneously sick.
Sleep for a week, barely conscious, fever, can't eat, definitely dehydrated, probably should have been hospitalized sick.
It took me months to truly regain my strength from that.
I will do whatever I can to avoid that again.

Absofuckinglutely I will. The medical community has enough to deal with without a bunch of flu patients on top of everything else.

Yes normally get it in October, which will be about the time I would be due for my Covid vaccine booster, so I'll just have to figure out timing. Im assuming you still can't have any other vaccines within two weeks of the Covid vaccine.

I got mine today. Last year I felt so ill after it that I went and got a COVID test, which turned out negative. So, either I had a reaction to the shot or I just had a random bug. That was the first and hopefully only time. There were 5 of us in line to get the shot today.

I get them every year, so does my kid.
DH never bothered to get them but COVID has him scared *hitless so he got over his fear of needles and got the vaxx. He's a believer now and he will get his flu shots from now on.
Waiting to hear what the rollout will be.
