Woot! Woot! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Signed, An educated, vaccinated, mask wearing, Republican I truly want to know... why Youngkin? Were you going to vote for the Republican no matter who it was? I'm not passing judgment on that, just trying to figure out what happened here. What part of the state do you live in? Everyone needs to take this election very seriously and we need to understand why he won. Did the Biden voters just not turnout? Or did Biden voters choose Youngkin and why? Was it a local issue? Is it because of what Biden has done or not done? Did Trump's endorsement help Youngkin? Did it help that Trump kept his physical distance or would he have brought in even more votes by campaigning in the state?

Racism wins again. America is sick with ignorance. Ignorance breeds fear. Fear breeds hate. Hate breeds racism/tribalism. Congratulations, Virginia!!! Racism lives! CRT panic is just it's latest incarnation.
ps - The "evangelical right" was not originally about abortion, it was (and is) about racism. It is about keeping people 'in their place". Jesus would be so proud.

I would be concerned with his rhetoric about CRT, if nothing else. That has caused more problems In our district than anything else. Racists showing their ugly heads. But I guess if everyone in Virginia agrees with his views maybe it won’t be as controversial. It’s a slippery slope. I’m glad that you aren’t stressed about his win, and I hope it turns out ok. But I think it is incredibly disturbing that people keep voting for republicans at this point. More People have some messed up values than I ever thought. It has little to do with how educated they are. Oh believe me, everyone in Virginia does not agree with his views. You can see that in how close the results were, if nothing else. My county remains solidly blue despite a larger-than-usual bloc of parents who jumped on that bandwagon of parents being in charge of what their kids are learning in school. It's the CRT thing for sure because as far as I can see there's never been any real large-scale complaints here (in my part of Northern Virginia anyway) about the content of our curriculum. The complaints have always been more or "wow, I don't understand anything of this new math curriculum" or "how can we get more writing into the curriculum?" etc. Yes, exactly. Until June nobody here was concerned about the curriculum. But once Fox started talking about CRT, now it is an all out war on education like you see in other areas. Luckily we still have a Democratic governor, but all of the republicans on the state and national level have latched onto the idea that white kids are being taught to hate themselves because they are white. We have a great school district with great teachers. But I’m worried that between the pandemic and the harassment that they are facing from a group of parents, that will be changing very quickly. I would be even more concerned if I lived in a state where the legislature and governor were part of that group. I know Younkin said that he would “ban CRT on the first day” but has he been clear about what that means and how far he is going to go in regards to the curriculum?

For those of you worrying about him overturning abortion rights, he won't do that. VA is still mostly a blue state. So is MD and we also have had a republican governor for the last 2 terms. In MD, when we have a dem governor, nothing gets done. No roads, nothing. Historically, we see more movement and positive change from republicans. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. It really irks me when someone says that we are doomed simply because a republican is in office. T was a whole different issue. I am a democrat and am interested to see how he governs. People say that because it’s NOT just Trump, it’s Republican governors and state legislatures too, and what they’ve seen being passed in their own states.

peppermintpatty I would be interested to hear more about the legislature when you have a Republican governor. Just like with the federal government, the legislature plays an even bigger role sometimes in making progress. Republicans in congress have blocked anything the democrats propose for years, making it look like democrats can’t lead. Then you have people like Joni Ernst in Iowa which are taking credit for the money coming into the state even though she didn’t vote for the program that led to that! People have to look at the bigger picture and not just “well, nothing got done when we have a governor who was a democrat so I’m going to vote for a Republican”. It isn’t that simple in many cases.

Ans the Democrat had already been governor and people are tired of career politicians. They should’ve picked a better choice to run. We didn’t and we got the results that we got. Ans I’ll say it again-Youngkin is crazy but I’m not worried about overturning abortion rights or anything like that. There will be laws I don’t agree with but I didn’t like Northam either. My fear was Amanda Chase would win the republican nod. I’m that case, we were doomed to hell. The lowest, filftithest laysr of hell. I would’ve moved. But most moderate republicans never would’ve voted for her nutcase ass. That’s why she didn’t win the nod. She would’ve lost by a landslide. I have numerous friends, moderates on both sides, who voted for Youngkim. He would be an idiot to alienate these people knowing that he wants to gain control of the state house and senate. Virginia is still a swing state and I know the pundits don’t think so, but we very much are. Many vote on issues, not party lines. There’s a large chunk of moderates, esp in the Richmond suburbs where I live. I’m a registered Democrat who has voted republican before. They were not happy with Northam and the pandemic and a man who already as governors and running again did not sit well with them. And public school curriculum? Virginia entacted this year a law that has forced schools to look at bathrooms and locker rooms for transgender students that I fully support. FYI, most districts haven’t done it or voted their shitty ass facilities are fine. So if Virginia is one more thing, we’re rebel to the core and we apparently don’t care, no matter what side of the fence you fall on. I would be concerned with his rhetoric about CRT, if nothing else. That has caused more problems In our district than anything else. Racists showing their ugly heads. But I think it is incredibly disturbing that people keep voting for republicans at this point. More People have some messed up values than I ever thought. It has little to do with how educated they are. Oh that’s one reason why he didn’t get my vote. CRT is an issue in Virginia now, and I don’t get it. But it’s a huge issue in pockets by a small minority. The media has ran with it and made ir seem like the state is going crazy. We think those people are crazy, so Fox News running with the story was perplexing. He’s also promised teachers a raise. Ha ha ha, I apologize for laughing but yeah, we’re not that dumb. He managed to appeal to moderates who did not vote for Trump. I’m willing to give him a chance, but I didn’t think Northam was that great either so my standards aren’t very high.

Ten years ago, I would have agreed with you that a Republican in office wasn't necessarily a disaster. Texas fared pretty well under GWB and even Perry, even if I didn't agree with things they did. We didn't see, at the time, the path the GOP was going down. And now it seems that every Republican who runs for major office is operating on a Trumpist framework. Performative legislation to keep the far right happy is part and parcel of what they do. A I think taking a "wait and see" approach with any newly elected Republican is dangerous. People from other states love to hate on Texas. I'm telling you, Texas was not like this 20-25 years ago when we moved here. The Republicans who voted for GWB are not the same ones now cheering the repressive bills coming out of our lege. You're going to have to fight hard for your state. Don't be complacent. The GOP is playing a long game. By turning large, red-leaning states into hotbeds of anti-science, anti-choice, anti-immigrant, anti-lgbtq, anti-multicultural bigots through misinformation and stoking of white resentment, they've given a national platform to those leanings and allowed them to spread. Every single Republican now is well versed in using white grievance to get their voters fired up, and in order to keep them, they have to pass laws that reflect those leanings. And then they use extreme gerrymandering and voter suppression to solidify their hold on power. I mean seriously, I hope I'm wrong. But I've lived in Texas for almost 25 years now, long enough to see the shift from reasonable conservatives to rabid crazy people running our state. Be aware and be careful.

I can see the agenda and direction of the Republican Party clearly now.

Take Iowa. They voted for Obama and were the first (or one of the first) to legalize gay marriage. But now? They don’t get the same press as Texas but they have enacted or proposed a lot of the same bills and ideas. There are many other states that are doing the same things as Texas under Republican leadership.

Rather than GOP running FOR anything, they're running against everything, stoking fear, anger and hate. CRT is the new dog whistle for them. Most voters don't understand what it is, don't realize it hasn't been taught to their children and will still mark the spot for the candidate who hollers that they're going to make it illegal in schools. And in Maryland, Hogan is starting to beat the drum about bipartisanship in our nation's Congress and Senate by calling out only the Democrats and completely ignoring the fact that the GOP are responsible for the stonewalling of progress. He's pivoting to run for national office, so start watching for him to align himself with the new GOP values as his term ends and he throw his hat in for national office. It should be interesting to watch because I don't think a moderate candidacy will bring out the new breed of Trump loyalists.

Can Rs name public schools where CRT is being implemented, for example? And Rs score points floating non-existent bogeymen; meanwhile getting very little done which benefits ordinary taxpayers. Can Republicans defend their records? It is time to find out.

I'm terrified for my daughter, her friends and all the women I know. Have a feeling we are on track for the same abortion law that TX has. Yeah I’m thinking a lot of Virginians here aren’t going to be too happy. Don’t blame them. 😕 But …they also likely won’t cry fraud or stolen election either, so there’s that. Have you noticed how there is nary a peep from the GOP about fraud or any of these races being stolen? If that doesn’t make it crystal clear that their new election platform is that the ONLY legitimate elections are the ones they win (regardless of how democracy actually works) then I really don’t know what to say to you. And *that* my friends is dangerously close to a fascist state. Yay.

Republicans want to hold on to power at any cost, even if that means chipping away at democracy to keep it. They know they can’t win on their ideas, so they push fear. They know they can’t continue to win with fear, so they suppress the vote and gerrymander. It’s really sad to see how many people will skip right along with those ideas just because the person pushing them has a R next to their name. They’ll trot happily right into fascism to “own the libs”. I’m starting to wonder if we should revisit our plan to leave the country we thought we wouldn’t need after Biden was elected. (My husband’s job could easily move to Canada.) I guess we’ll see after midterms. 😔

Only place lower is DC. For such an affluent state VA pays its teachers poorly compared to other professions www.business.org/hr/workforce-management/best-us-states-for-teachers/

You might want to start following Heather Cox Richardson. She's a political historian. Unless you're a super wealthy Republican you're not going to like the vision the current Republican party has for the country.

I also want to say that many people don't fully understand what "banning CRT" actually means. It sounds simple, and even this week I have heard many on CNN say, "Younkin says he will ban CRT, which isn't even taught in Virginia schools" but they and others are really missing the point here. When people started talking about CRT in the spring/early summer, we said that very thing. Why are they making such a big deal out of something that is taught in college law classes? And many left it at that. But they have now EXPANDED their definition of CRT to include many topics that are much different than CRT the law school theory. It has been so twisted and if people don't learn more about what their objectives are, things are not going to end well for the country. There are groups that are giving presentations around the country, and there is a toolkit that groups can use to attack their school boards and take over with their agenda. citizensrenewingamerica.com/issues/combatting-critical-race-theory-in-your-community/At one time I had a link to the list of words that they deem to be inappropriate, but I can't find it now. I think it might be somewhere in that kit that I posted above. But there was a very long list, including various forms of social emotional learning, equity, etc that they deem to be taboo topics that teachers shouldn't talk about.

Maybe you can take a break from calling everyone and everything you don't agree with racism to congratulate the first female, woman of color, Lt. Governor for Virginia Winsome Sears?!?
Next up looks like the first Latino Attorney General in Virginia, Jason Miyares.

What term should be used then? How can one vote for racist policies and not be one? I mean, if you (speaking generally) think you’re not one, but you’re ok with voting FOR people who are clearly racist or for policies that are racist, then while you yourself may not feel you’re racist, you’re perfectly fine with enabling it or turning a blind eye to it. So I’m really not sure how to nuance any difference there.

I mean for real, it’s like when Candace Owens co signs something racist or bigoted or ignorant and these people say “See? She agrees, and she’s black - so it can’t be racist! 😵💫

She does seem like she was a decent candidate, in my observation. Her stated goals on a couple of things seem a little at odds with the governor in some respects though, so that should be interesting.

Never stops.... Delusions abound... Donald Trump has already been claiming credit for Glenn Youngkin's election win in Virginia, and now he's saying that proves his own loss was due to fraud. The twice-impeached one-term president spoke Wednesday morning with right-wing radio host John Fredericks, and he devolved into a lengthy and baseless rant about election fraud. "We have a very corrupt election process in this country, and I've exposed that," the former president said. "We've exposed that, and I've further exposed the fake news for being corrupt, which I'm very proud of." Fredericks, who was Trump's campaign chairman in Virginia in 2016 and 2020, asked how Youngkin could have eked out a 2-percent win a year after the former president lost re-election there by 10 percent. "Yeah, I don't believe there we lost that, I don't believe we lost Virginia," Trump said, "and I think I can get away with murder in Fairfax, but there were too many eyes on it. You know, when I ran it was it was one of 50 states and other areas, okay -- the islands, places nobody ever heard of. What a mess, what a mess, this election process. Now I don't believe it. They said Virginia's blue, I never believed it was blue." www.rawstory.com/john-fredericks-radio-show/
