(Good grief, at last I have some experience to share - I've been a taker far more than a giver these last few days!!) Erm, girl, you are in the PL 2022 thread in January (2022!). Hello? That's definitely being a giver to your craft and doing so in a very up-to-date fashion. Gotta agree with Chinagirl828 here, the questions/answers ratio thing is a natural ebb and flow. Don't fuss about it. You're gearing up to start documenting the year already and that's all that matters! I have made a start on my 2010 album though, taking the photos and notes I already had for Jan and Feb and putting them into page protectors and adding some PL cards, and today I started pulling papers for some of the bigger pockets/12x12 pages. Whoa, that's impressive. Going back over a decade in time to make a PL album is some kind of scrap sainthood I will never achieve. Kudos! sleepingbooty I like the idea of writing exercises to try to make me feel more confident in my story telling. That would be a really good goal for 2022. If the albums were just for me I probably wouldn't think so hard about it, but I get self conscious about other readers that look through them. It's a wonderful way of building up your confidence and testing out the kind of writing you'd be willing to share in your albums. Go for it! There are basic writing prompts that help with PL-type of documenting: sensing/feeling (using -ing verbs), attitude of gratitude (everything that makes you grateful about the moment you're retelling), a letter to (person you shared a memory with, place, time of the year), picture description (set the scene), etc. I'm sure you have an empty notebook somewhere in your stash... I haven't made a start yet. All of my layouts so far this year have been for the Month of Challenges at The Lilypad, plus Sketchy Saturday here. I want to try and complete all 31 layouts for MOC, so I might have to put PL on hold until February. Super impressive, AussieMeg! Cheering for you from the PL sidelines and can't wait to see your PL pages come February. One Two more thumbs up for the SS photo flips although I haven't had these in my stash for a couple of years now. They were really fun to use when I had some.

How does everyone go about their journaling? I love the look of a lot of words in a layout but I feel uncomfortable with my writing. My longer stories are not well written and I tend to ramble so I usually stick to two or three lines of fact based things. Also, do you handwrite? Print from your computer? Use a typewriter? I hand write, since I am currently in between printers (I don't have one now). I do type it up on my computer first so I can revise it easily, and then write it out (copy it) on the journaling card.

Who here does a one page spread/one side pocket protector per week?
I’m thinking of doing this weekly and I know I won’t have enough for 12x12. Planning on 9x12 again. Do you use the same PP the whole year? Trying to plan this out before I get too far into January and I need to see how many PP I have.

I always use the a page protector with the 4-4x6 and the 4-3x4. I kind of have a formula down with number of photos with one journal card and one pretty card. I've never done Project Life before, and the only pocket pages I've used are for my December Daily. BUT...I decided to start now. I read through this whole thread, and then did a search on the forum and found the 2020 through 2022 mega threads, and read through all of them. You guys are amazing! I found a wealth of information and subscribed to a few new (to me) YouTube and Instagram users.
I ordered a 9x12 album and assorted pocket pages and started working on a 2019 album since that was the last "normal" year and I thought it would be the most fun to work on. I went through my Google calendar and created a table in Word showing dates and events. Then I looked through my 2019 photos on my phone and added notes of everything I missed in my calendar. I'm loving going through my 2019 photos!
I've already got pocket pages filled for January, February and part of March. Once I'm done with March, I'll go back and start embellishing before I go on to the next quarter of 2019.
I have a few questions:
- I read some references to "Design A" and "Design B." Can someone please tell me what those are.
- Is there a website or app that has newspaper front pages of past dates? I did find the current headlines website.
- What fonts do you like to use for creating your own journaling cards?
- What subscriptions to you find most useful? I did already sub to Elle's Studio.
- What process do you find most useful when going back to work on previous years?
Many thanks to all who have contributed to all the Project Life threads! My daughter called me the other day and asked what I was doing. I told her "I'm studying Project Life on 2peas." She laughed...she does PL and she knows I have to research everything to death before I start anything.

I read some references to "Design A" and "Design B." Can someone please tell me what those are. Design A is a very popular 12x12 page protector design. It is called this way because that's its official name in the Becky Higgins Project Life PP series. Design B is no longer manufactured, however. I don't think it ever was popular but I could be wrong. It had 3 vertical 4x6 photos at the top stacked on top of 3 rows of 2 horizontal 3x4. Here's the digital version of it. What fonts do you like to use for creating your own journaling cards? There are so many great free fonts out there but I think the trick is to find your go-to fonts for one year so it looks cohesive. I'm very partial to Adobe Caslon Pro in italic for my journaling. Other popular options for journaling are good ol' Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, Verdana and Calibri. For titles, Bebas Neue and its many inspired-by alternatives were super popular a few years ago and remain very liked. What process do you find most useful when going back to work on previous years? Honestly, I'm a move-forward kind of girl for most projects. I'm terrible at working back in time. Going back in time, you'd need to sit down with your cloud to reference all the photos, Google (to look up events that happened, when TV series were released), any kind of help with placing products and services at the right time (Kindle purchases on Amazon for ex.) and your email inbox mostly. I would use a digital notebook (like in Evernote) or a physical one to keep track of everything. Keep 1 section/page per month and add stuff as you find it. It's quite some investigative work if you want to include stuff like movies, TV shows, books, music, events attended. Don't overextend yourself: enough is enough at some point. There are some Peas currently working back in time who will have far better and more detailed advice to give than I can (tagging Chinagirl828 burnbright). I'm so glad you've decided to join us on the wonderfully chaotic, neverending scrappy journey that is PL. It's a little crazy to keep up with at times but it's by far my go-to project to record life. Absolutely wonderful and oh-so rewarding to flip through when you're done with a year. Nothing captures life better.

- What process do you find most useful when going back to work on previous years? I'm working on a 2010 album along with my current 2022 album. My process for current albums is definitely different, and all I can say is if you plan to do a 2022 album at some point start taking some notes. I keep a word document for the year, with sub headings for each month, and just jot down things, usually each week. I'll note things we did, anything I'm watching, listening to, or reading, and how I feel about things that I'm either taking photos of or not. Trust me, this will make it so much easier to add meaningful journaling (if journaling is your thing) when you come back to it. Like you, I've started by working out how the photos are going to go into my album a month at a time. The first half of my year is already printed so I just lay those out in chronological order and then started working out what page protectors I needed to put them in, leaving spots for journaling where I had stories I wanted to include. For my 2010 album I have amazingly detailed notes for the first half-ish of the year which is making this part of the project a breeze. The second half of the year is going to be much more challenging as I have basically nothing. For that part of the year I'll use the photos to jog my memory about events, or tell small stories that are loosely tied to my photos (eg I'll tell a random work story that roughly fits in this time period for a photo of my desk at work). The second half of the year doesn't have photos printed yet so when I come to that I'll work on a week at a time, opening all the photos in Word. I start by resizing everything down to 3x4 then deleting the ones I can now see I don't want to include. This will include duplicate photos, or some of those random one off photos that we take just because that don't speak to me or that are being sacrificed for photos that are more important in my memories (eg I'd keep photos of my cat over photos of a flower or a butterfly if I didn't have space for both). This process works for me because I print my photos at home from word, so once I'm done deleting I'll resize anything again that I want bigger or smaller and then print straight from this document, but if you print in another way you might find the process I use for my big travel projects to be more useful. For those I'll make a copy of all the folders that hold my photos, usually relabelled as trip - scrapping version. I then go through each of the photos in these folders and delete any I don't want to print. Again, this is duplicates or things that I don't think add to the overall story. Once I've deleted everything I don't want to print, I then pull the photos into PSE where I resize and get them ready to print. I'm also batch doing tasks, and I definitely think it's the most efficient. I worked out where my photos would go, then I went through the album with the monthly themed cards and pieces I have, dropping them into pockets, then I added some additional cards from the same collection (I'm using EPs yearly collection from this year), then I added any specific embellishments I had pulled out. To finish those pockets I now just need to add some more general PL cards and make everything look pretty. It's working well for me, my 2010 album has a mix of pocket pages and full size pages, and I've made 4 12x12 layouts this week which is a lot for me, I generally get one or 2 done at most if we're not in a month of challenges like 28-4-28 or sketchtember. Good luck with your project.

Also, your suggestions for places to look for info on past events is very helpful! I really appreciate your taking the time to help me out!

For my 2019 book, I decided to go through April before I stop to journal and embellish Jan-Apr. I was originally going to go through March only, but we took a 3-week trip to Europe in May, and I have over 2500 photos from that trip. I always create Mixbook photo books of our trips that have hundreds of photos and descriptions/journaling, so I'm going to be very selective and pick only a few from each location that really speak to me for my PL album. I know that's going to be a daunting task so, when I tackle May, I won't be working on any other months. What will be helpful is that I already weeded out the photos I don't want to keep when I created the Mixbook, so I only have hundreds of photos to go through instead of thousands. I really appreciate all your comments!

Any time I have a big trip like this that I've documented elsewhere, I try to work out how many photos/layouts I want to include in my PL. Once I have that rough idea I then just think about what photos I want without looking in my library. There will probably be only a small number of images that come to mind immediately when you think about that trip compared to the number of photos you took - they are the ones I'd put in. My PL pages are just the teaser for that trip so I really only want the best of the best in here: the best thing we did, the best scenery, best moment. It sounds like you're making really good progress on your album so far.

When I do a big trip, I usually make a travel journal, leaving me with the challenge of making PL "different". One way of doing that is to make 3x4 cards for each place which I complete on the road/sea and just slot in when I get home alongside a few photos. They have the benefit of being "instant" as well as good memory joggers. I edit the text to fit the place and sometimes get someone else to fill it in too. I am in awe of those of you who can work retrospectively too! I'm another "mover on" - once it's done, I'm done too. I'm about to work on last week and even that's a bit of a struggle

Well I bought 2 9x12 albums (one for each kid) and a pack of 40 pages protectors of various types.
Should be here Wednesday of next week.
Looking forward to getting started with this type of scrapbooking.

I decided to do 12x6 double page spreads each week. I already had 12x12 pages from 2014 when I last did PL. But I decided 12x6 gives me the “real estate” of all the same pockets but less cumbersome to hold and look through. I found I barely look through old 12x12 albums because they are so heavy and big but my memory planner from last year is much more compact and I often look at it which is more the point for me.

So, I haven't yet started my 2022 project life album, but I've actually been super inspired to work on this style of documenting lately and I've been cranking out spreads pretty quickly! I finally finished up 2020 and am sharing a flip through on my youtube if anyone is interested. Flip through on my youtube
I am still working through 2021 and have about 3 months worth of weekly spreads left to go, but I know they'll go quickly and I kind of like having more weeks to choose from when I want to work on a spread. I really don't mind being "behind" a little, that just means I'll never run out of stuff to work on! My plan for 2022 is to create a weekly process video, typically the Sunday after the week ends (so tomorrow I'll film the first week of January) and then share it on my youtube during the following week. I definitely just maintain my youtube for fun so I can't promise I'll keep up with it, but this is my goal for now. I also wanted to say that I am contributing to an In My Pocket class over at Theresa Moxley that starts in two weeks and I'm having fun creating content and sharing a deeper dive into my process for project life. I totally understand people not wanting to purchase classes because there is a lot of free inspiration out there, but I really think this class will be worth it if you are looking for more detailed information that is well organized and it's only $20. If you're interested, you can get the class here.

Just for fun and out of curiosity - how long does it take you to complete a PL spread?
I do 12x12 and I have to work on them side by side. Meaning I can't do the left side and then later do the right side. I have to see it all together. It takes me at the very minimum 1 hour but I probably put in 3 or 4 hours total per 2-sided spread.
It's rare that I am able to finish in one go. I usually pull everything out, make a few decisions about cards or embellishments, put it away. Bring it back out and repeat several times. I have commitment issues lol. It always amazes me to watch process videos that just get it done.

Just for fun and out of curiosity - how long does it take you to complete a PL spread? The short answer is it really varies. Sometimes I'll have a photo heavy, minimal embellishing, just a bit of journaling page which I can knock out in about an hour which includes the time it takes to resize and print (at home) all the photos. Sometimes I have a spread where I just want to play with all the pretty supplies so it might take me a couple of hours of playing around in my stash looking for the right bits and layering everything up. And sometimes I'll work on pocket pages in small bits throughout the week, leaving it on my desk and pulling out papers or cards or embellishments when I have a few minutes, and then working on one card at a time when I have a few extra minutes. I can absolutely finish in one go, but I often find it more efficient to batch scrapbook on pocket pages, printing photos for both sides of a single page protector at once, and then choosing papers and cards for them together, printing journaling at one time, etc. I can definitely complete a page in a single scrapbook session though, the biggest game changer for me has been choosing a colour scheme for each week which makes choosing supplies a much faster process.

For those doing monthly how many pages do you average per month? How do you choose which stories to tell?
I’m going to do monthly this year. I’m also going to attempt to go back and do a few years I haven’t done. I want to do them monthly but I’m looking back at the photos and feeling overwhelmed. I’m thinking maybe I should just set a maximum…..4-5 stories per month. I need some framework I think.

The big things like trips, birthdays, holidays, etc are included in my album. Things like when Covid started and my husband started working from home was included. But I don't include every park visit with my son or our once a week take out evenings. I think I included the firsts for each of those, but once they become regular occurances, they don't get included, unless something bigger happens around it.

Just for fun and out of curiosity - how long does it take you to complete a PL spread? I count each one week page as a spread since I do it weekly. If I do it all (picture editing, selecting , printing, creating, journaling, etc). It can take 30 minutes - 2 hours. I often have too many pictures to include and create flip ups. The end of my last book it was super quick since I only had a few pics to include since we were all sick for a few weeks. For those doing monthly how many pages do you average per month? How do you choose which stories to tell? I guess I do it weekly vs monthly because my goal is to capture the little daily moments. I still include the big things like birthdays, awards, sporting events and such, but I also like to tell the funny stories that happen and the daily events that make us a family. When I first started scrapbooking 20+ years ago it was more about preserving the pics for me. Now I want those stories that make up us.

I feel like I deserve a reward since I finished my 2021 album yesterday! I have so many years past that are still unfinished but 2021 is done (minus December which is in my DD and is almost complete too). And even so I’m still debating whether I do PL style again for 2022 since I miss traditional 12 x 12 pages. I like that all of 2021 is in one album- huge for me since it’s been 2-3 albums for other years plus vacation albums. And I love including more of the daily stuff without having to devote a whole page to it. And it has allowed me to do more journaling. Yet I’m still undecided! I haven’t gotten my Elle’s Studio sub yet, but I’ll decide once I do.
Anyone want to convince me to stick with PL this year?

For those doing monthly how many pages do you average per month? How do you choose which stories to tell? I’m going to do monthly this year. I’m also going to attempt to go back and do a few years I haven’t done. I want to do them monthly but I’m looking back at the photos and feeling overwhelmed. I’m thinking maybe I should just set a maximum…..4-5 stories per month. I need some framework I think. I just looked back at some older albums to count. I do 2-4 spreads per month but 4 is rare. It's mostly between 2 and 3 plus inserts sometimes. As far as deciding what stories to tell, I pick out my favorite photos of the month and go from there. Sometimes there is a story, sometimes it's just a pretty picture I want to include. Photography was my first hobby so I still pick up my camera just to play, and other times I snap something because I want to remember the moment or story behind it.

I feel like I deserve a reward since I finished my 2021 album yesterday! I have so many years past that are still unfinished but 2021 is done Congratulations! I would totally bring over a BIG chocolate medal and declare you a PL winner if you lived nearby. You did it, you finished an entire year of PL. And all of us in this thread know how much effort that takes. PL is not for the faint of heart... Anyone want to convince me to stick with PL this year? Sure! You should totally consider doing a hybrid album in which you do pocket pages + 12x12 LOs as PL. It would bring together your love for LOs and the everyday documenting you've enjoyed doing for 2021. I see no reason to keep those two approaches separate or to have to choose between them. There is nothing quite like having your family's entire year held in one big book... For those doing monthly how many pages do you average per month? How do you choose which stories to tell? It really depends on the months and my photography. I'm currently doing 9x12 and I will usually do 2 to 4 "large" stories that take up one side of a PP (so half a spread). Sometimes it goes up to 6. I also do monthly recap pages (Covid-19 news, politics/news of the world, music + books + TV series + movies, current faves, etc.). I will occasionally add a DITL/WITL page or spread (I don't do these as separate albums). A big story doesn't have to be a big memory to qualify, however. I'm happy to dedicate a PP to, say, seeing an exhibit I absolutely loved at the museum. It's about the impact the memory has had on me even though an outsider flipping through my album may be unimpressed I included that. For January, so far, I have: January 1st with my SO's family, museum visit + city outing, kings cake at my mother's place, all things hygge during this colder than usual winter month.

So I deciding if I want to start a PL sub this year. With my AE order being lost I'm having to rethink my plan for PL. I guess my only options are Elle's Studio, SC, AE, CD and Hip Kit Club? Am I missing any?

Am I missing any? Paper Person has a monthly sub. I know all the ones you mentioned except CD… and now google wants me to join a CD/music subscription. Lol

Anyone want to convince me to stick with PL this year? If ever I wobble about about continuing with PL, I get out one of my old albums and look through it. So far, there's been no further question

You should definitely continue with pocket pages in some form so you can keep adding in the everyday life stuff in the pockets because you said you love that aspect of it. But you can also mix in traditional layouts, it doesn’t have to be one or the other. I do project life as my main everyday life documenting, but will highlight certain events or stories with a traditional layout and just sandwich them into my project life album. I also do some other traditional pages around other themes or time periods and keep those in separate albums. My daughter’s albums (chronological about her growing up) are primarily traditional layouts but then I add in a few pocket pages when i have a lot of little photos or stories to include. There is no wrong way to do it and it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I hope you find a system that works for you!

My yearly album is a hybrid with my monthly overview/highlights as PL and then any 12x12 layouts related to the month follow immediately after. Usually my PL is anywhere from 1 single side of a page protector to 4 (sometimes more). Some months I have traditional layouts that follow, others I don't. I also don't use a single size or orientation of page protector. Right now I have a variety in my stash so I use whatever works best with my photos and I use filler cards or pattern paper to make it all fit.
