I am a certified infection preventionist RN in a Florida ICU. I am certified through the CDC and I am CIC credentialed. Come work one shift with me, and I'll show you why you should be frightened. Terrified. Covid is not a joke. It is not an easy recovery if you make it past my ICU. We've lost someone from every age, every race, every religion. Fully vaxxed, antivaxxers, etc. I sat with parents of a 20 something unvaccinated Covid patient, while the infectious disease doctor explained that there was nothing more we could do. The father said, "At least they'll die a pure blood."
Fuck that guy. If he knew the sheer amount of man power that went into caring for that "pure blood" it wouldn't matter. But I'm here to tell you that we cared for them for 12 weeks and it mattered to us. They did not have to die. I have a governor that gives exactly zero shits about his constitutes. It's more important to keep Disney open and let the snowbirds come down and bring all their unvaxxed friends, too. I can't tell you how many of my colleagues are now separated or in the process of divorcing a spouse due to the level of constant stress. It's disheartening and it's a tragic part of all of this no one is discussing. I'm happy for those of you living in some bubble where life is totally carefree. Covid is no big worry. I worry every night about how many people will be in the ED tomorrow, unable to get the care they need because uncaring, selfish, willfully ignorant people won't trouble themselves to put on a fucking mask, or put on their big girl granny panties and get vaccinated. Thank you for sharing this and for everything you are doing. Based on what I’m seeing in Arizona, Covid is not a joke and there is not an easy recovery—even for the vaccinated. Here in Arizona, what I’m seeing is people not wearing masks and going about their lives with no concerns and no ”fear”. I’m not doubting that people are doing that. I just don’t think they realize what is going on in their communities—and especially in their hospital and healthcare systems. I don’t know if it’s ignorance or apathy or something else. In Arizona, our healthcare system is in a world of hurt. Hospitals are requesting any and all kinds of help from county, state, and federal resources (including FEMA) for nursing staff and other hospital personnel because hospitals are overwhelmed and short staffed. People cannot get the care they need because there is limited hospital staff so elective surgeries are getting delayed/cancelled and emergency patients are waiting and being treated in hallways. I’m not denying that LOTS of people are “living their lives” and whatever else, but there is a price we are paying for that. So far, I haven’t had to personally pay the price, but many in my community are and because of that, I continue to be cautious, even if it isn’t mandated. Being cautious does not mean living in fear. It means that I recognize there is a pandemic that is impacting people and that I want to do my part to limit the spread so that others don’t get sick or die.

You can’t give or spread something you don’t have. Are you saying that everyone has the virus and is capable of spreading it if no mask?? Good fucking grief. Someone can be infected and spread it before symptoms start. We’re almost two full years into this and you STILL don’t understand? FFS. It takes less time to potty train a toddler. Then it will keep spreading and spreading and spreading. Masks don’t stop the spread, they may slow it but don’t stop it. And vaccines don’t offer protection from getting it. So people may have easier symptoms from the vaccine, some don’t. Thrice vaxxed still die from it. millions are asymptotic without the vax. Millions have natural immunity and some may never get it. People masked and vaxxed still get it and can still shed it and spread it. Nothing is 100%. People still think if they get it they WILL die from it but that is a very small percent. Two years into this people are waking up to the politics of it, rules for thee but not for me (yeah, I’m pointing to all of the politicians and leaders). if you want to wear a mask for the rest of your life, that’s great because that’s what we are headed for. There will be one variant after another and the media will do its best to whip it up into a frenzy. In the meantime, deaths from omicron? ZERO in the US as of 11/29. But you can be masked in a room full of people with masks on and you can still get it. The fact that there have been more covid deaths in 2021 than 2020, despite there being vaxs available for this entire year to me is very telling. You want to put 100% of the blame on the unmasked and/or unvaxed? Go ahead.

I think what the OP and a few subsequent posters are missing is this: just because your town or city has abandoned all Covid-19 mitigation protocols, that doesn’t mean you’re doing the right thing. Or the advisable thing, or rational thing, or safe thing.
These measures were developed by experts with decades of experience, not on a whim, but based on facts and solid medical evidence.
It’s so juvenile - “everyone else is doing it, so I will too” said no one ever as they lay on a train track with a train 50 yards away. Because that’s what omicron is.
Not be cute, but maybe to be cute, but there is no “me” in virus. There is an “us” though and way too many of us have abandoned all reason and compassion. And not just American citizens. Collectively, we failed to deploy a global vaccine strategy that could have cut the teeth off new variants. So here we are, holding our asses yet again. Year three, yippee.

Most people in the US were not able to get vaccinated until late Spring, early summer. Since then, most hospitalizations and deaths have been the unvaccinated. The first confirmed case of Omicron in the US was Dec 1st. Experts think we are about two weeks behind Europe in terms of the spread of Omicron. What happens there will give a good indications of what happens here. So far, only 1 death. Which is good news. What is wrong with being cautious in the US for a couple more weeks? Omicron is a fast spreader. Hopefully it is not as deadly as Delta, but we can't tell yet.

Not only are we 2 weeks behind Europe, there is an additional 2 week lag in hospitalizations. Most of Europe has higher vaccination rates than the US. And the risk of omicron is not the severity of infection, the danger is how fast and how many other people one person can infect. If omicron infects 3 times as many people as delta, based on sheer numbers you’re going to have more serious cases even if the severity is lower. Hospitals are already overwhelmed with delta, add more patients with omicron and we’re screwed. What happens if health care workers start getting sick with it and have to isolate at home? Hospitals are already understaffed and overworked. Go ahead and justify living your life, not living in fear etc. The rest of us will keep masking, socially distancing, being cautious etc. This is an excellent opinion from an epidemiologist about why we should take omicron seriously. emilysmith.substack.com/p/this-is-why-we-need-to-take-omicron

The deaths among the unvaccinated are the VAST majority. Those vaccinated who die from covid have other comorbidities, and it’s still a very small number. How do you not understand all this? I’m truly astonished. I’d tell you to pull your head out of your ass, but it seems like it’s permanently affixed there. I hate that you also live in Michigan. Stay the fuck away from Oakland County.

LOL! You had me fooled. 😂 No one can truly be that ignorant and type in complete sentences. Good one! Nice playing with you. Come back when you want to have an honest conversation about the COVID virus and what we can do to lessen the strain it is putting on our hospitals by cutting down on the spread by vaccinating, wearing masks, and quarantining when you finally know you are carrying COVID (which is some time after you have been unknowingly carrying it around and potentially spreading it hither and thither, hence the need for wearing masks). Nope. It’s not just the unvaxed in hospitals. And unless you are wearing an N-95 mask you can spread it. Those blue masks and homemade masks don’t offer much protection. Maybe some, but not enough. Also, why does no one want to talk about natural immunity, you know, like if you’ve had covid already, I have antibodies still, 15 months after having had covid… This is true however let’s look at the stats… At the hospital I work for: Of all of our Covid patients 80% are not fully vaccinated. Of all of our Covid patients 30% are in the ICU. Of the Covid patients in the ICU 84% are not fully vaccinated. I think that is pretty telling. We are having to look at postponing elective procedures and make other difficult decisions because of high census, staffing shortages, etc. It is not pretty right now and I am from a state that is taking it very seriously and is pretty compliant.

So do we not try to mitigate the death and sickness caused by this virus or because we can’t stop it dead let’s throw up ours hands and not even try? Man, people living today would really have issues if they lived in times of WOrld wars or previous pandemics because we suck at being resilient, at pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps, at doing what is right, necessary, and needed for the common good. You would think a country that brags at being the best, being full of patriots and people that are putting country first would do a little more of putting country first and looking after our fellow countrymen. But instead we show how we really don’t care about our fellow citizens, and actually just other humans, especially if it causes people to have to make small personal sacrifices.

I don't go swimming with sharks or saltwater crocs. I don't drive 100 mph down the freeway. I haven't picked up the hobby of eating fugu prepared by amateur chefs. I don't take street drugs where I don't know the contents. For some people, I suppose that's living in fear. For others, it's called "living in a way that promotes the option of dying of natural causes at a ripe old age." I am still doing the same hobbies that I did before the pandemic - but I take a few precautions here and there because there is a global pandemic going on. I've also picked up some new hobbies that are quite interesting - like reading the r/hermancainaward on reddit. And I have to say that without the sheer number of "lions, not sheep" who are out there living with "faith over fear" and "not afraid of a little virus" there wouldn't be quite so many interesting stories to read. So, thank you to all of those who live in areas with widespread cases but who don't take precautions. Without you, there wouldn't be so much material in that subreddit! I suppose one could say that you're all "essential workers" in your own sort of way. There’s huge stretches of highway in my state where the legal speed limit is 85 mph, so I find myself going 100 without even realizing it. Would you also do so if it was raining so hard that your visibility was down to a couple of hundred yards.?

I also think it is important to point out that many who are considered fully vaccinated at this time haven’t had a booster, so their protection is likely waning. So, we might start seeing more vaccinated people getting sicker again.

You want to put 100% of the blame on the unmasked and/or unvaxed? Go ahead. Also, imo, it is hopeful to think that Covid will go away. But I think realistically it is more likely that we will get to a point where it is more like the flu. There will still be Covid, but the number of people who get seriously Sick or die would be a lot less. The only way I see that happening is if more people get vaccinated. Sure, vaccinated people can still get and spread Covid. But if everyone was vaccinated it would likely be a lot less people in the hospital overwhelming the system, or dying. In the meantime, what do we do since a large percentage of one party won’t get a vaccine because their leaders (politically or through the media) tell them not to? These are the same people who, when a news outlet posts a story about someone dying of Covid or hospital being overwhelmed, respond with disrespectful comments like “stop fearmongering” or “post happier things” or “who cares? It’s an old person who died (when the person was 60)” and so on. As for masks…are they 100% effective? Probably not. But as you said, they slow the spread. Isn’t that a good thing? Or are you only interested in a 100% cure or treatment? In regards to the number of deaths…again, you have to look deeper into the situation. Covid didn’t really take off in the US until April or May. And most people were staying home for several months, which obviously helped. Now everyone is “living their lives” with no though of Covid until they are sick. Yet your only explanation for the continued deaths is that masks and vaccines don’t work? Wrong.

Because I believe that if every qualified person in the US.... EVERY SINGLE ONE.... got fully vaccinated and boosted, we could reach herd immunity and the virus wouldn't have the chance to mutate and this would be 90% over. Then Covid would be something like the flu that we could manage. Now, the caveat is the global access to vaccines, which I realize messes up my little scenario. But I think my general point still stands. Just because we can't be perfect doesn't mean we can't make PROGRESS.

I mean, people are literally dying of lots of things all the time 🤷🏻♀️ We’re all gonna die of something. What an absolutely cold thing to say. I’m sure that kind of thinking will bring great comfort to the family and friends of the 800,000+ Americans that have died from COVID-19 since the beginning of 2020. In less then 2 years 800,000+ Americans have died. Not only has that virus killed over 800,000 Americans it has also left some who got the virus and survived with a multitude of ailments they didn’t have before. I believe they are called long haulers. And for many that did die it wasn’t a quick easy death. Some lingered for months hooked up to ventilators in and out of comas. And without their families to give them some comfort. Unbelievable. Unfuckingbelievable for her complete insensitivity and obtuseness.

It drives me nuts when people act like those who wear masks are idiots. Someone told me in the grocery store a few weeks ago that I need to take my mask off and stop watching CNN. I looked him right in the eye and asked him why he cared, how did my wearing a mask have anything to do with him. It drives me nuts when people act like those who DON’T wear masks are idiots. If you are masked and vaxxed, you are protected. If you tell me that’s not true then the vaccines and masking mean nothing. You yourself, with your own post, proved the point of idiocy.

I don't equate wearing masks and trying for a bit of social distancing when around people I don't know with "living in fear" or being terrified, locked up or "missing out on life". I consider it "no big deal". I also consider it "the least I can do" to help with a much bigger problem.
Hospitals are still full of COVID patients---that's NOT just a COVID problem. That's a problem for everyone. It's why people are waiting in ERs for ridiculous amount of time. It's why people keep having tests and procedures delayed.
If I can make slight alterations in my life that can benefit everyone around me, I consider that to be a good thing. I'm enjoying life AND trying to do my part not to keep COVID from being sent around over and over again. It's not that different from how one could do things to avoid passing around the flu---you can get a flu shot, you can wash your hands often, you can stay away from others when you have symptoms, and in other places, wearing a mask to avoid spreading germs isn't a new thing either. It's us who have been inconsiderate in running about while sick all of these years.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before ,
Vaccinated people still transmit the virus.
I think there are two types of vaccinated people.
Those who take additional precautions to prevent transmission (Like masks and distancing etc)
Then there are vaccinated people who don’t bother. They continue to spread the virus and increase transmission.
More transmission = more variants
More variants = less vaccine effectiveness with less protection
More transmission also = more risk, more death, more Long Covid, possibly more dangerous vaccine resistant strains.
It is a prolonged vicious circle .

I think those who don’t have medical issues precluding them from being vaxxed and still have not done so are firmly entrenched in their decision. (I’m speaking only about the US population.) This is why I’ve said many times that a vaccine mandate is necessary. Here’s an example: As many probably know, there’s a rather high prevalence of vaccine hesitancy in the black community. I mean, it’s somewhat justified because of medical horrors inflicted on black people in the past resulting in a deep distrust of medical institutions. But I keep telling some folks I know who still haven’t vaxxed that you can’t let something that happened seven or so decades ago dictate your decision today. Since I can’t physically drag them to CVS or Walgreens to be jabbed, I often just end up saying if they trust their doctor, then go see him/her and listen to and act on the doctor’s advice. I say if they have employers that mandate the vaccine, oh well, what will you do…get jabbed or get tested weekly, or lose your job. That’s about all I can do. Encourage.

It is a prolonged vicious circle . I agree with you completely. Because I have a kid who could only recently get the vaccine, I never stopped masking in public indoor places. I got vaxxed at the very earliest opportunity for me to do so, and the same for the booster. DD has been masking religiously virtually everywhere except at home and now is finally two weeks out from her second dose. Meanwhile, my DH feels that since he diligently masked while at work when he had to and elsewhere when it was mandated, got two doses of the vax and the booster, and now feels that’s good enough. He will mask if someone asks him to or if a place requires it (like going into the school building which requires 100% mask compliance), but otherwise he’s “nah, I’m good.” 🙄 He also has a bunch of anti-vax, anti-mask Trump loving friends that he socializes with, I’m sure without masks. If any of us get it, it would likely be him first and him bringing that mess into our house. He’s also overweight and type II diabetic, so out of the three of us he should really be the *most* concerned and cautious, and yet, he’s not. Sigh. I just do what I can personally do to minimize my own risk, convince my kid to do what she can do to protect herself and pray that DH continues to be lucky because at this point that’s all I’ve got. I’m glad he’s at least vaccinated.

I mean, people are literally dying of lots of things all the time 🤷🏻♀️ We’re all gonna die of something. Yes but most causes of death aren’t contagious! Not going to catch a heart attack or cancer from someone. As far as the original question, we are vaxxed and boosted and so are our friends so we socialize and travel as we want and mask if needed. Our daughter just graduated nursing school this week but has worked in the hospital around Covid patients since March. But as people rightly point out, a major worry with Covid is that it can overwhelm the hospitals and people can't be treated for other emergencies. Many people in hospital with heart attacks and obesity related conditions are taking up hospital beds because of unhealthy choices they made. Should we create BMI passes were only people who are a healthy weight can buy junk food and eat at unhealthy restaurants? Should people not be allowed to climb mountains or ski or do other risky activities because theres a chance of an accident and that puts hospitals under pressure?

There’s huge stretches of highway in my state where the legal speed limit is 85 mph, so I find myself going 100 without even realizing it. Would you also do so if it was raining so hard that your visibility was down to a couple of hundred yards.? I wonder if she drives 100 with her kids in the car?

I wonder if she insists that all the sharks wear coordinating outfits? G*d forgive me, but I always picture the Turpin family.

And I thought that coffee thread you lost the damn plot over was something to behold.
