Reading these responses, please remember that short books count. Kids' books count. Audiobooks count. Romance novels count. Don't let anyone tell you that those kinds of reads are "less than!" You're a reader! Yikes. If kids’ books count, mine would be a crazy number. I read an average of two books a day to my granddaughter, as well as rereading some favorites from my early reading life so I can discuss them with my older grandchildren. DGS13 just got into the Redwall series, and his twin just read The Cay. I love that they both are readers.

For those who read a lot of books, how much time do you spend reading per day? I will often binge read a book in a few days, but then end up neglecting other things because I am engrossed in the book. Then I go a few weeks before getting into another one. I am curious about people's reading habits--when you read, how long you read at a time, do you work, how many kids/activities, etc. I keep different books in different places. I have a "kitchen book" that I read while waiting for things to be ready when cooking, boiling water for tea, etc. I also will read when sitting in the living room with someone who wants to watch something I'm not interested in. That way we can be together even though we're doing different things. My kids love to watch Minecraft videos, for instance. I have no interest, but I'll curl up on the sofa with them while they watch and read something instead. Those kind of books need to be easy reads, since I'm either reading them in very short time bursts or while there's background noise happening. During times of year when I'm dropping off/picking up kids, I keep a car book. Basically, any time someone else might be on their phone, I'm holding a book. Then before bed I devote time to any book that requires a more quiet, dedicated time to read. And if I'm reading to someone else, then that's usually an every single night thing, but for half an hour or less each night.

43. My goal was 50 so I fell a bit short. I’m going to try for 52 next year.

I read 41 books this year. If magazines count I read 16 of those this year.

Holy smokes - I feel so inadequate - I thought I was doing good because I read 12 (about 1 a month). That is a lot for me in a year. I'm with you. I think I might have read that many. Although, I did read 3 on vacation this summer.

Ok, I have some setting wrong in Goodreads. It shows all my books, but says that I only read 15 this year. But if you manually count the books, I’ve read 39. I do need to go in and manually add my audio books. Anyone know what’s up with my count? Have you set a date for all those books? Either started or finished? I had about 15 that were on my read but because I hadn’t put a date on, weren’t included in 2021. I only really started reading again in August. I’ve had a really, really dry couple of years and couldn’t get into anything. I was getting 99p kindle books and wondering why most of them were rubbish. So this summer I just decided to buy the books I want to read and not worry about it (my library doesn’t have a very good online service at all). I’ve read 28 books since August, including the first four Dune books. My favourite new author is NK Jemisin. That’s the problem. I just marked them as “read”. On the app, there isn’t an option to add a date at that time. But you can go back and edit it. Which I’m not going to do! But in looking around the app, I found several books on my “To Read” list, so my count is closer to 50 now. I binged a Grey’s Anatomy podcast this year and that took up a lot of my reading time. I don’t set a reading goal or worry about the count. I read several 800 page books and that skews the count anyway. iamkristinl16, maybe that’s your issue as well? And don’t feel bad about the number of books that you read or don’t read. I would imagine that a great deal of your time is spent with the kids and their needs and activities right now. I’ve never been as busy as when my two were in HS. Between carpools, meals, friends, and all of their events, there wasn’t a lot of time for myself.

I’ve read 80. My goal was 75. It’s been a good year of reading for me. Idk I was just going from book to book and that helped. Also, I listened to about 7 audiobooks, which I loved. Also, I had a foot injury that kept me on the couch for 6 weeks, so that definitely helped lol!
Next year, my goal is 70. I’m lessening it to my less pressure on myself.

To everyone here feeling like a "loser" or guilty for the amount they read, please don't. Any reading is wonderful. I set my "goal" to 52 books a year, thinking that will encourage me to read a book a week. Some I tear through, others I slog along. This year I aim to read "A Suitable Boy" which is over 1000 pages. So the number of books doesn't show how big or small they are. I would say I read about an hour a day. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the libraries closed, and I dusted off my kindle and figured out how to get library books - OMG what a LIFESAVER. Bc I didn't have to leave my house, AND I can read in any light or place. My DH hates when I read with the lamp on, and I hate having to stop sometimes so the Kindle allows me to read in total darkness if I need it. The glow is soft compared to a lamp. I take the Kindle with me everywhere, in the car, appts, if I have to run into the office and run software - I used to bring a book but the Kindle is much lighter and fits in my purse a lot better. I used the kindle sparingly before, and now I am annoyed when I have to use a paper book!

193 per kindle insights, but that doesn’t count book compilations that only counted as one, a couple of books I’ve read the old fashioned way or the Bible that I read through every year.

Wow, I feel like a loser.....I only read 18 I'm proud of all of you. Please don't consider 18 a failure. I finished 17 and I thought that was amazing for me. Reading is only one of the hobbies I have. I spend a lot of time doing other, just as rewarding things. I also have bipolar concentration issues so I can't always get my brain to cooperate. I can't watch tv either because of it. And it's rare that I read fiction books too. I much prefer books that are more of a challenge to my brain. Not because they challenge my brain, but because that is my preference for entertainment. I like to learn new things. Every book I read I consider myself a little more educated or entertained. I would never want reading to become a chore for me. I hope you will reconsider your perspective on your reading total. Some people do not read at all.

DGS13 just got into the Redwall series, and his twin just read The Cay. I love that they both are readers. I think everyone gets to decide what "counts" for themselves. Back when my oldest was a toddler, he had this huge basket of books in our living room, and he'd call me over, dump the basket, and expect me to read every single book. Which I did. And I'd put them back into the basket after I read each book. When we were all done, he laugh and dump the basket again, hoping I'd read them all over again---which I did if possible. So, clearly, back then, I'd be posting numbers of 53 books a day some days, LOL! I mean, a person can read "Goodnight Moon" or "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" very quickly. And many of his books at the time had far less pages/words than those. So if I had been doing this challenge then, I would not personally have counted each time I read those, although, for the sake of simply documenting that I read those books at all, I may have counted each one once. Because I have this silly wish that I had a complete list of every book I have ever read, which is ridiculous, of course, because I wouldn't have any clue what all books I've read in my life!

I always have a book going and have a book or my Kindle with me wherever I go. Sometimes I only squeeze in 15 - 30 minutes, sometimes hours. My kids are grown, only one at home. I do have other hobbies but I ebb and flow in how devoted I am to doing them. I have been very much in lockdown due to health/pandemic so I have time. I read so many books because it’s about my favorite thing to do, it’s essential to my personal well being. My own policy is to never judge what a person likes to read, what format, or how many they consume. I feel strongly about the benefits of reading and I’m happy when people do it.

Yeah, I reread Game of Thrones - a 5 book series where each of the books is 695-1000 pages, so that took a bit of my reading time.

Like a few others I read less this year than I usually do. Which is weird considering the pandemic and staying home more etc.
My goal was 80 and I managed to complete it 2 days before the end of the year.
Planning on 100 for 2022.

I read 0. Zero.
I love reading but the exhaustion of this pandemic has fried my brain. I can't concentrate on anything.
I used to read on the bus to work, but I cycle now, and that disrupts my very limited reading window.
I am aiming low and am going to try to read 12 books. In other years (ahem, before children) I used to read hundreds. Sigh.

We were delayed by months with the vaccine rollout here at our Army health care facility in Belgium. I was told to hold out until March and I didn’t leave the house from med-December until I got my vaccine (finally!) in April. That delay just did me in. It’s like I had all my hopes pinned on March. I was in quite a funk for all of March.

my annual Goodreads challenge goal is 52 books, which I have successfully done each year since 2015. This year I finished with 64 books which the most in a year yet. It helped that we now spend our winter months at the beach with no tv LOL
Starting off the new challenge tomorrow with a fresh book - Go Tell the Bees that I Have Gone

I read 13 and I'm good with that, my mental energy has been very low and concentrating on anything has been a struggle. Reading isn't a competition is it? No, reading isn't a competition. It doesn't matter how many books a person reads per year, what they read or what type of book they are reading (digital, paper, audio etc.) What matters is if you are getting joy from your reading. If you are that's wonderful and I would encourage you to keep reading as long as that joy lasts. If it ever starts to feel like a competition to you or you aren't enjoying it then consider stopping for a while and doing something else instead. Sadly I think it's common for us to feel competitive when these sorts of threads come up, but I think we should step back and realize that this feeling of competition isn't healthy for us. What truly matters is are we reading because we enjoy reading or are we reading because we want to keep up with the other Peas? Read for yourself, for the joy of it and you will be a much happier and fulfilled person.

That’s the problem. I just marked them as “read”. On the app, there isn’t an option to add a date at that time. This is how I do it on the app. Click on the bookshelf below the book and choose read. Click on shelve book in the upper left corner. Scroll down below the book title and click on edit review (in a blue font) on the right side. Click on edit review, and that's where you can add the star rating, date started, and date finished. When finished, click on save.
Actually I guess click isn't the right word for an app. Tap? Push?

I am such a slow reader, and can only read before bed when not wearing contacts. I can't see close up with contacts. So it usually takes me 1-3 weeks to read a book. The only time I read a lot is at the beach. I love to read, and wish I was a faster reader. I read 20=30 books a year. You should look into progressive contacts. I got them last year & it was such a huge difference for me! I still need cheaters for tiny print like the directions on food boxes, but otherwise so much better. I can't believe I waited so long to try them And I agree reading is not a competition! Everyone reads at their own pace. I always try for one book a week, but I'm usually a quick reader (when I have the time to devote to it!). I read a lot on vacation. And during my lunch hour when I'm working. Or when I'm waiting for appointments. And I'll admit that a lot of my books are shorter quick reads

I have no idea how many books I've read this year. I don't keep track. Most of my reading is done at night in bed. I go to bed quite late, so I often only read one chapter before my eyes start falling out of my head. Something I've always wondered about, is why people set goals for how many books they want to read. Doesn't that almost make it into a chore? Especially of you're getting towards the end of the year and realise you're still 10 books off your goal. Do you feel the need to race through books just so you meet your goal?
