Did you all see this? abc7.com/heart-transplant-denied-covid-19-vaccine-boston-hospital-policy/11509056/A 31 yr old male was taken off the heart transplant list because he won't take the covid vaccine. Good for that hospital system! Having been in that position 2x with ds (heart/lung and multi GI - both we ended up not listing for), there is a long list of requirements. Heck, to get on to a special TPN that was under emergency use for pediatric use, you had to agree to GI transplant so we said no. Follow the rules or don't. Your choice. I just don't get it. You need x transplant. Wouldn't you encourage your family member to do the right steps to live? They do realize allllllll the post transplant drugs he will be on right? I will post the article below.

BOSTON, Massachusetts -- David Ferguson is speaking out passionately on behalf of his son DJ. He says the 31-year-old is fighting for his life at Brigham and Women's Hospital and in desperate need of a heart transplant. "My son has gone to the edge of death to stick to his guns and he's been pushed to the limit," Ferguson said.
The family says he was at the front of the line to receive a transplant but because he has not received the COVID-19 vaccination he is no longer eligible according to hospital policy. And Ferguson says his son refuses to get the shot.
"It's kind of against his basic principles, he doesn't believe in it. It's a policy they are enforcing and so because he won't get the shot, they took him off the list of a heart transplant," Ferguson said.
Brigham and Women's released a statement saying, "And like many other transplant programs in the United States - the COVID-19 vaccine is one of several vaccines and lifestyle behaviors required for transplant candidates in the Mass General Brigham system in order to create both the best chance for a successful operation and also the patient's survival after transplantation."

Dr. Arthur Caplan is Head of Medical Ethics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He says being vaccinated is necessary for this type of procedure. "Post any transplant, kidney, heart whatever, your immune system is shut off," Caplan said. "The flu could kill you, a cold could kill you, COVID could kill you. The organs are scarce, we are not going to distribute them to someone who has a poor chance of living when others who are vaccinated have a better chance post-surgery of surviving."

Well, sometimes standing for something means giving your life for it. He's made his choice, and now there will be natural consequences.
Has he tried thoughts and prayers? I hear they work smashingly for unvaxxed people who get sick.

It absolutely blows my mind that someone waiting for a transplant would refuse to take a vaccination required to receive the needed transplant. I typically really, truly try to imagine how others feel, or put myself into their shoes, but in this instance, I just really can't imagine passing on a heart due to not wanting a vaccine.

I feel terrible for his wife and two very young children. He has decided that his choice to not take a safe vaccine is more important than being a father to his children.

I cannot imagine digging my heels in so deep, as to willingly die than take a vaccine. Did he not have vaccines for grade school? For college?
My heart goes out to his children!

I can't imagine sticking to your guns and losing a transplant. Prior to my sister having her liver transplant (due to autoimmune hepatitis) she had head to toe exams, procedures (even had to have a tooth fixed prior to surgery). She had to have her flu shot. It was to make sure there was nothing that would compromise the transplant after it was completed. And if he had an issue with the vaccine, wonder how he would have felt about the drugs he would take everyday for the rest of his life?

Literally a hill they're willing to die on. The people who politicized all this in the first place need to be locked up.

I don't know how many pills he would have to take, but I knew some who had a transplant(not a heart) years ago and he took at least 47 pills a day.

And that's just it. Would he be willing to take those drugs? People are loosing it on FB saying it isn't fair but I don't think they have a clue that a simple cold could kill him after this. This isn't just a simple operation this is major and something that he will change his life forever. The drugs are major and if he doesn't take them it will all be for nothing anyways. If he gets sick then it was also all for nothing. They always give it to the person most likely to survive. If a person is at the top of the list but gets sick or declines too much they have to move on to the next person.
I feel bad for his children.

Mind blowing that there is no understanding of why the policy exists. Or that all the other rules and requirements to get on the transplant list are reasonable, only the COVID vaccine requirement somehow violates a basic principle.

I don’t like the title here or in the article. He is t being denied, he is removing himself from the opportunity to be considered. He isn’t the victim.
When my FIL was getting his transplant he couldn’t even go more than 30min in any direction from his hospital either. There are a lot of rules to get a transplant.

It's mind blowing to me that this guy trusts mainstream medicine to literally **remove a major organ from his body and replace it permanently with someone else's organ**, but doesn't trust them about a vaccine.

For curiosity sake I would be interested in what specifically he has against the vaccine. Like the alleged stem cells? That Covid is fake? Big pharma? Science denier? I don’t really get it, the vaccine is literally the hill he is going to die on and that just blows my mind.
I’m with the hospital on this one, you do everything in your power to be a worthy candidate for someone else’s gift of life. And honestly if I were a family that didn’t get an opportunity at a heart because of him or a family that lost a loved one and he got their heart I would be beyond Pea Livid.

I'd like to see all his research notes on all the medicines he would be required to take IF he were to get a transplant. Not even counting what he is taking now.
BTW: No one is entitled to a gift for any reason.

I personally don’t feel comfortable with harsh views ,judgement or punishment for people who choose not to be vaccinated . I do feel however that other precautions against Covid like good quality masks and shielding etc are essential . Broadening things slightly , I came across this recent article from the Atlantic about the subject called “It is a terrible idea to deny medical care to unvaccinated people” www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2022/01/unvaccinated-medical-care-hospitals-omicron/621299/

The title of this thread is misleading. He wasn't denied a transplant. He turned the offer down because he didn't like the conditions he had to agree to that would not jeopardize the success of the transplant. It's no different to all the medication he will have to take post transplant such as the anti rejection drugs that he will have to take for the rest of his life.
I would be pretty mad if I was the family of the donor if the hospital had gone ahead with it.
I really don't understand the mentality of people like him. How awful for his wife and children to know that he didn't care enough to stay alive for them. Maybe his wife feels the same way but his children surely must be too young to know the consequences now, but they sure will do when they grow up.

My DH had a stem cell transplant. Shutting down your immune system for something like that is brutal. You can't eat the foods you want, enjoy the outdoors when you want, or be around people for a long time. You are very sick and very weak. The list of requirements is long. I know a woman who got a tattoo to celebrate when she was approved for a transplant, and that took her off the list because it was an infection risk.
He's the one who made the choice to refuse the transplant.

While I do not believe that typical medical services should be withheld for not vaccinating, transplants are a very different situation, IMO.
You know, if you have ever gone through the evaluation process to try and get on a transplant list, that there are many many things that can get you on the list, taken off the list, and/or just through the process. Making the decision to not accept a vaccination is just one of them. They are very forthcoming about what you need to do and not do. If you are not willing then you are not considered a good candidate and you will not be put on the list or will be taken off.

I personally don’t feel comfortable with harsh views ,judgement or punishment for people who choose not to be vaccinated . Removal from the list isn't a punishment. It was the known result of failing to comply to requirements. A relative of mine had a transplant that required them to first have 2 other surgeries. If they said "I do NOT want to undergo 3 surgeries (including the transplant) in a row. That's just too much for me.", then they would not have received the transplant. It wouldn't have been a punishment. It would have been because there was a list of items required and they didn't fulfill that list. As an aside, something went wrong in one of those first 2 surgeries and so they actually wound up going right back to have a 3rd surgery to correct that issue before they could have the transplant. And of course, they did that as well, because even though a 3rd surgery wasn't originally on their requirement list, life happens, and sometimes requirements are added as you are waiting.

That's fine. One less person on the list who is desperate for the heart and will follow the rules. He's not replacing a finger. He's replacing a major, THE MAJOR, organ to keep up alive. There aren't hearts just sitting on a shelf waiting for their next owner.

I was thinking more broadly of people being fined financially as punishment for not taking the vaccine which is already happening in several countries. For some the fines are regular and continual .
Whilst I am pro-vaccine for those who are able - I just don’t like it being mandated in some countries.
There have been some other threads here where people have had zero compassion for those who have died unvaccinated . I have been shocked .
Like other people , we as a family are clinically vulnerable due to heart and lung problems and been prisoners in our own home for 2 years only leaving for hospital visits and one drive locally.
I want this to end as much as anybody else and unfortunately in the UK it is set to get even worse with the lifting of restrictions creating more risk for us.
I don’t want to lose my humanity on top of everything else.

He is choosing to refuse to follow protocol to receive a gift from a donor and he has that choice. To be a participant he MUST FOLLOW very strict rules and regulations. The team needs to be assured that the patient will be compliant to those rules and regulations until forever. Let someone who will appreciate the heart and will take the best care they, and their family, can to provide to the heart! BTW: I have never said the unvaccinated should be denied routine medical care. If that were the case our hospitals would not be full!!
