I'm surprised no one posted about this yesterday, but I'm just dumbfounded that Whoopi on the view made multiple statements that the Holocaust wasn't about race as it was white on white groups?!?! I understand she's now apologized, but is it really possible for a 66 year old women to not realize that WWII was ALL about race - I mean damn Hitler made no secret of his belief that the Aryan RACE was superior - throw in actual laws on whether your grandparents were Jewish to determine if you could hold a JOB - even before the actual rounding up and killing of Jews. I'll freely admit this is why I HATE the View - they're just dumbasses spouting whatever drivel enters their mind - and I haven't forgiven Whoopi's rape, rape - so really wonder why she continues to have a platform when she is so very ignorant of even the basics of history. And do we continue to accept that you can be that ignorant and espouse your views so vehemently and we're all supposed to say oh never mind you apologized?!?!

That was really, really stupid on her part.
I don't watch the show so I didn't see anything until her apology came upon my news feed today. WTF was she thinking? She's not that dumb.

OMG yes I saw that. Unbelievable. She needs to go, she says crap upon crap upon crap. Like, 'it wasn't 'rape, rape' in regards to Roman Polanski.
I can't stand her.

I think there genuinely are a lot of people who don't realize to what extent people who are now constructed as "white" historically were constructed as "nonwhite."
I don't know if she is one of those people or what. Between this crap and the "being told to vaccinate to go to Applebee's is just like the Holocaust" crap, it's clear to me that we need better Holocaust education, stat.

I think Goldberg is an idiot and should know better, but doesn't bother to educate herself. She's said plenty of stupid, ignorant things in the past. It doesn't feel like an agenda to me, though. I think she just doesn't feel any kind of responsibility to be informed on the things she publicly opines about - which is mind-boggling to me.

I saw a clip where she said something similar to “you can’t even tell who is Jewish, so it is not a white supremacist thing” She forgets there was a list, and they were made to wear stars among other things to clearly “mark” them and make the division wider. She’s an idiot. We must not forget.

If I heard correctly this morning, she went on another talk show last night and basically doubled down - after her apology.
I just don't get how a person's opinion is supposed to be elevated because they are a celebrity. There's nothing special about her, so why does she get to voice her screwed up narrative on a TV show?

I have a bit of an appreciation for the "white" not "white" as my Spanish ancestors in Mexico were very much emphatically white - to pretty ridiculous degrees - then they showed up on the first census in the US in the 1940s - with Mexican next to their names - so much for all that ridiculous handwringing on the Catholic church making sure they were separating the Spaniards - with grandparents and sometimes great-grandparents listed on the baptism record to show they're not ""Indians" - once they hit United States - they were all Mexicans despite their best efforts. So I do get that - but her comments were so beyond even the most basic of basic understanding of the Holocaust - I don't expect her to be a historic scholar - I expect her to have hit a few of the movies/books in her last 50 years.

I got the feeling she’s used to being listened to just because of who she is and she expects to be listened to. She didn’t take any notice of the other people who were querying what she’d said.

Am I? I'm guessing there's a significant overlap of people who watch this show and who also do themselves or their spouse listen to Joe Rogan. There's a market for stupid. ETA: I was going to apologize because on second thought my response sounds like some elitist bullshit. But I'm not going to. There's a market for stupid. We've seen it over and over again. Rachel Hollis, Joe Rogan, The View.

I've certainly learned otherwise in the intervening years, but when I was in high school (class of '91), the emphasis was really on it being about religion. What we were taught about the Holocaust was not nuanced at all - it was very much Nazis bad, killed millions of Jews, and the war ended because AMERICANS. There was a lot of emphasis on the American involvement in the war and little on the rest of the war and its causes. I am sure when I graduated HS, I could have told you a lot more about specific WWII battles and American generals than anything else about the era. They didn't ignore or deny the Holocaust - they just did not explain it in any detail. It was the mass murder of millions of Jews, the end. FWIW, I got a 5 on the APUSH exam, so... 😭 American education.

Oh that’s the Goldberg they were referring to? I saw a mention of a Goldberg on Twitter but only a last name was used and I forgot to follow up on who it meant. I don’t watch The View (I detest it and think it’s long outlived it’s productiveness) so when one of them says something dumb, I miss it till there is an uproar there.
Ugh, seriously. That is offensively ignorant of her. Sometimes, she comes off willfully uninformed.

I don’t watch The View, but I heard about this. I’m glad that she apologized. I don’t know, of course, but my guess is that like many people, her knowledge about the Holocaust is sparse. Although I don’t know how you wouldn’t have read about the German plan for their master race.

It was about aryan white supremacy, and the propagation of a master aryan race. Mein Kampf was pretty damn clear on it. Part of our syllabus required analyzing it (as far as understanding the many roots and causes of WWII) though, so perhaps that’s why I understood early it was about race and not religion at all. Any religious difference aspect was just additional way to “other” them.

I think it was just the tv version of the mom influencer. Ladies sitting around talking on tv about that which they actually know very little of. Infotainment before the podcast and the YouTubers really took off. I would guess their audience is just older but really no different than that of any other lifestyle celebrity. No substance at all.

A little bit of irony care of Wikipedia (the link they used is dead, so I couldn't verify it)...
About her stage surname, she claimed in 2011, "My mother did not name me Whoopi, but Goldberg is my name—it's part of my family, part of my heritage, just like being black", and "I just know I am Jewish. I practice nothing. I don't go to temple, but I do remember the holidays."

You and are are same general graduation time frame and I think location (west coast) - I went to a pretty crappy high school and was trying to remember if they discussed race vs religion (while agreeing that it was mostly they killed a lot of Jews - nazis bad) - I have an inkling of a memory of white supremacy emphasized but confess to not being sure - it was 30 YEARS ago - surely she's grown a bit since then - especially as she's 20+ years older then either of us. I think that's what's irritating me so much - she's demonstrating absolutely nothing to support a platform to discuss current issues - and she's far from only one on the View.

To be clear, I am not excusing her in any way. There’s no excuse for someone with a platform like hers to be so ill-informed. Just saying I can see how people of a certain age who aren’t intellectually curious and haven’t deepened their understanding of history beyond what they were taught high school might believe the Holocaust was about religion, not race.
