I know who the leaders of the protest are because I watch their press conferences. They have a team of lawyers, doctors, scientists, and truck drivers. I don't know what child abuse claims you're making but I suspect they are unfounded. I did not say that the truckers were setting up food kitchens to feed the homeless. I said that "They have been feeding the local homeless with the extra food that has been donated". In response to your mention of Swastika flags, there was a person sighted flying a flag of this sort and he was forced to leave by angry protesters. Later, a photograph circulated of Prime Minister Trudeau's personal photographer photographing the person with the flag. It looked very much like he had been planted there, since Trudeau's personal photographer has not been sighted at the protest since. Later, there was a group of four or five people sighted carrying a similar flag, at the side of the Chateau Laurier Hotel, on a balcony set back from the protest. I don't think a Swastika flag has been seen since. There was also someone seen with a Confederate flag one day which doesn't really make sense as it has nothing to do with our country. I'm not sure about the dancing on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. If that happened it is unfortunate. As for the Terry Fox memorial being "desecrated", a Canadian flag was placed on it. I guess you can make up your mind about whether you think that's desecration. Good googly, knowing who the leaders are without knowing a thing about them or their motivation is not a good look. Child abuse, IMHO, is putting your kids between yourself and the police. What parent would bring their kids into a situation where they (the parents) are likely to be arrested? And hope that the cops would back off because, you know, "the kids" just like they should allow soup kitchens because the homeless might benefit. I guess jumping up and down on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier might pass for dancing in some circles. It is still horrifying and the least of what happened. Are you not aware of the urinating? Defecating? I don't know why anyone would carry a Confederate flag either, but it also broke my heart a bit to see Canadian flags in the Jan 6 DC crowds. It was more than a flag placed on Terry Fox, a Canadian treasure who should be remembered with respect and not hijacked by anti-science goons. If you really understand who he was and what his legacy for cancer research is, you wouldn't be so dismissive about how his statue was desecrated.

You condemn dehumanizing people in one post, defend it in another, then call others stupid and dense. This doesn’t seem like a healthy place for you. You also need to look up the definition of dehumanization. Just because someone doesn’t like you and verbalizes it or disagrees with you and tells you why does not mean that you are being dehumanized. Exactly this. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dehumanize: to address or portray (someone) in a way that obscures or demeans that person's humanity or individuality Stupid and dense might be mean or unkind. But those words are not dehumanizing. Referring to someone by their legal status alone, a single word is dehumanizing.

As a Canadian, I definitely "understand" who Terry Fox is. It's almost insulting of you to insinuate that I wouldn't. You saying "what his legacy for cancer research is" suggests to me that you looked him up immediately before writing this. You're talking to someone who watched him nightly on the 10 o'clock news, running across Canada as he did it, wept when he died and paid homage to him yearly by participating in Terry Fox events for most of my life. Declaring that his statue was desecrated by placing a Canadian flag on it is contradictory as far as I'm concerned. He wore a Canadian flag on his chest as he ran across Canada! He was a proud Canadian.

Maybe not all. But some of them are DEMONSTRABLY so. See above. That is true and unfortunate but I'm quite sure if you were to ask the other 99.9% of protesters if this video reflected their views they would say "no." I understand this was not your personal experience and you may not have seen symbols of white nationalism. But, you're ignoring the bigger picture and disregarding the facts, especially about the organizers. Your estimates of support for the truckers blockade is also inaccurate and overly exaggerated. And it wasn't just a Canadian flag on the statue, it was inverted. www.snopes.com/news/2022/02/17/swastikas-canada-freedom-convoy/www.theguardian.com/world/2022/feb/08/canada-ottawa-trucker-protest-extremist-qanon-neo-naziwww.politico.com/news/2022/02/14/canadian-truckers-block-bridge-strike-protests-00008620Key organizers of the “Freedom Convoy” include Tamara Lich, who previously worked as the secretary of the Maverick party, a far-right group launched to promote the separation of the country’s three western Prairie Provinces; Maxime Bernier, who leads the far-right People’s Party of Canada; and James and Sandra Bauder, who lead a group calling itself Canada Unity. James Bauder reportedly supports QAnon conspiracy theories and has called for Trudeau to be put on trial for treason because of his pandemic policies.
www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/01/31/canada-ottawa-protests-trucker-coronavirus-vaccine/Protesters put an inverted Canadian flag — a distress signal — in the arms of the statue of Terry Fox, a Canadian who lost a leg to bone cancer and embarked on a historic cross-country run before his death in 1981 that raised millions of dollars for cancer research.
www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/02/canada-anti-vaccine-trucker-protests/622060/ Nearly 60 percent of Canadians find the protesters “offensive and inappropriate.”
By far, the largest supporters of the trucker convoy on social media are Americans, namely Donald Trump and Elon Musk. (One of Trump’s former “science advisers” has attended rallies.) Republican Senator Ted Cruz is way, way more into the trucker convoy than any Canadian Conservative is.

Taking your kids to watch what is happening for an hour or two is one thing, but a weeks long extended field trip to sit in the middle of blaring horns, exhaust and protesters shouting expletives means calls have been made to the Children's Aid Society. From this Washington Post article, Children's Aid Society was asking parents to make arrangements for their children should they (the parents) be arrested. The police were very patient IMHO with the warnings they gave. You don't get to take their kids with you when arrested. Hard pass on linking you to the desecration at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Yikes, do that google search yourself. I'm a Canadian from BC, the same age as Terry Fox. Well, a couple years younger, with friends that studied kinesiology with him at SFU. And followed his journey before the rest of the country started watching the Marathon of Hope. So, yup, no need for me to google him. And it wasn't just putting a flag on the statue that has people upset.

I don't usually post on this website as I much prefer just reading for interest and information but this particular post contains so much inaccurate information that I feel compelled to clear some of it up. I live in Ottawa. I have been to the protests. My personal experience was that I did not see any sign or flag that was not promoting peace or unity. What I did see were thousands of Canadians coming together to protest our government, something that is 100% legal no matter what your TV announcer tells you. There are some things that being American, you may not know, in particular that our mainstream media in Canada is 100% bought and paid for by the Liberal (Trudeau) government. This means that anything you may read or see from these sources is biased. In fact, they lie. Frequently. Yesterday for example, they reported that a "bicycle" was thrown at a horse which was ridden by a police officer which in turn caused the horse to "trip". Since there are hundreds of protesters recording, what actually happened was caught on video - a group of officers on horses came through the crowd and trampled two people, dislocating one woman's shoulder - a woman who was using a walker. In pictures, the woman's walker was easily seen on the ground beside her. There was no "bicycle". If you want to know what is happening there, the best way to see it is by following people either on Facebook or Instagram or YouTube who regularly livestream straight from the protest. The idea that these truckers are "terrorists" or "white nationalists" is so inaccurate that it's humourous. The truckers are unilaterally promoting peace. They have been feeding the local homeless with the extra food that has been donated, they've kept the streets clean by shovelling them daily, they've kept the garbage off the streets by cleaning up daily and all of this has been captured on video but you won't see it on the nightly news. These truckers are standing up for every Canadian who feels that the government is not representing them which as it turns out is quite a few people, not the "small fringe minority" that our Prime Minister claimed they were. At this point, millions of people have come to Ottawa to join them and to thank them for their efforts. Some local residents who live close to the protest have complained about the noise from the horns. A judge decreed that there was to be no horn blowing at night and the truckers complied. What I feel from reading these posts on this thread is that people don't seem to understand the true "why" of these protests. I've read here posts calling the truckers "whiny babies" or something similar. In fact, these truckers and all of Canada have dutifully followed mandates for almost two years. In the province of Quebec (to correct another inaccurate post) if you are unvaccinated you are presently not allowed to enter a store which is 1400 sq. feet or larger. Quebec's premier was recently (until these protests took place) threatening to impose a "health" tax on the unvaccinated. In Ontario we have been wearing masks since this all began, with no end in sight. Some Canadians have now had enough and feel that it's time to ease restrictions. It is their right to feel this way. Others disagree which is also their right. From reading this thread, I see that people think the protesters are acting illegally. There have been parking tickets issued. Those are bylaw infractions. There were people arrested for "mischief". For the people still being held, (some of the organizers) we have yet to see whether these charges will be upheld or whether the arrests were made simply to deter others. From livestreams last night, there were numerous people reporting that they had been "arrested", been put on a bus and driven about 30 minutes away from the protest area and dropped off at a shopping mall and told not to return. They were not asked to sign anything according to them. You can't arrest someone for protesting peacefully and the police know this. Currently, numerous sections of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms are being overridden due to Canada being declared to be in a "state of emergency" due to Covid. A state of emergency is not something that should go on endlessly. The protesters are asking that all mandates be dropped immediately. The Prime Minister enacted the "Emergencies Act" a few days ago. This Act used to be named the War Measures Act before it was updated and the name was changed. It was used only 3 times in Canada's history - during the First World War, the Second World War and during the 1970 "October Crisis" which saw the Deputy Premier of Quebec kidnapped and murdered. This protest which has bouncy castles for children and free food for anyone on almost every corner is not comparable to the First or Second World War as you may be able to understand. This Act needs to be voted upon, both by the MP's and then it must pass through the Senate. This must be done in 7 days. It gives the Prime Minister almost total control meanwhile since during an actual war scenario, waiting seven days for a vote would not be useful. Since he has enacted this Act, Trudeau has unleashed hundreds of riot police, regional police, snipers and officers on horses to try to chase off peaceful protesters from legally protesting. The Act is already being disputed as the necessary requirements for enacting it have not been met. Many people see it as Trudeau throwing a "Hail Mary" pass to stay in power. Currently many of the trucks have left or are leaving. Others are staying. There are thousands of protesters on foot downtown while hundreds of police stare them down. If you want to see what is happening live and for yourself, "VIVA FREI"on YouTube is an ex lawyer who commutes from Montreal to Ottawa every second day or so to walk around and interview people and show an unbiased view of what is going on. "OTTAWALKS" on YouTube does a nightly walk around the streets too. There are many others who are streaming live on FaceBook, Instagram and YouTube. It's actually pretty eerie to me how many of the buzz words and phrases you incorporated into this post - "mainstream media," "bought and paid for," "you won't see it on the nightly news," etc. Putin has well and truly poisoned the well in the west.

Look at what a RW media hound wrote on Twitter. I just can’t. Is this a common conservative view? 😳
Yeah, forget about a crisis that could have a huge destabilizing impact on Europe. And focus on the problems of angry conservative protestors in another country, a sovereign nation. Is this what passes for policy on the fringe right? This woman is an idiot.

sudsy said I think that most people would be able to see the difference in a person proudly wearing his country's flag correctly on his chest while running and to what was portrayed on Terry Fox's statue by the protestors. I don't think for one moment that Terry Fox wore his country's flag upside down did he or had a freedom placard attached to his chest. In fact I think he would be horrified.

The right to protest does not equal the right to shut down all movement in a major city for weeks, nor to deny its citizens the quiet enjoyment of their own private homes with excessive noise and diesel fumes. Violence doesn’t have to equal looting and shooting. It can look like a long-term occupation in the streets of a major city.
Perhaps some of the protestors are not white nationalists, but they are happily taking funding and support from those who are. Perhaps some have legitimate reasons to remain unvaccinated, but they are taking money and support from people who have promoted conspiracy theories and outright falsehoods about vaccines, to the detriment (and sometimes death) of millions. If they want to convince people their cause is just, taking money from charlatans, grifters, and criminals is not the way to do it. Their funding is dirty and they are all tainted by it, as well as by their own actions.
Oh and as to their feeding anyone who comes by - you know who else feeds people and provides aid to those who need it? Hamas. Well-recognized terrorist organization in the Middle East. So that argument doesn’t really hold up.
Your truckers there are being funded by white nationalists and wannabe terrorists, are keeping the peaceful citizens of Ottawa from their daily business and a presumably a decent night’s sleep, and are using some of the money to feed deluded looky-loos who walk by. Yay. Very impressive.

I am not aware of Sara carter or on twitter so didn't see this news but our local station reported that a bike was thrown at the horse and that cause the horse to do this…obviously not the case if you see the live feeds. The woman has not died but she is in the hospital.

The woman has not died but she is in the hospital. Yep. And the thread talks about how this was inflated to "OMG the police are trampling and KILLING people!!!" Propaganda at its finest. Did the woman jump in front of a 1400 lb animal and scare the shit out of it?! Or did the well-trained animal somehow go berserk? Or did the office aim at the woman? Don't know. What I do know is the right-wing media amplified disinformation in order to propagandize.

The older woman walked with a walker so doubtful that she jumped in front of anybody. Possibly. Possibly not. My mom walks w/a walker and she walks very quickly. We don't know, do we? What we DO SEE EVIDENCE OF (see above) is that the right-wing propaganda outlets spread DISinformation about people dying in order to rile up the gullible, didn't retract it for hours while it was retweeted thousands of times and inflamed an already dangerous situation.

I watched a video yesterday multiple times shot from the view of the crowd, several people were either pushed into or stepped in front of horses on purpose. I watched several times just to be sure of what I was seeing. I knew as soon as the video went up that the right would be screaming violence from the police. Etc etc.

Pretty sure the phrase “truckers mouth” and “my language is so bad I make a trucker blush” means the word fuck is part of the truckers repertoire of colorful words.

I watched a video yesterday multiple times shot from the view of the crowd, several people were either pushed into or stepped in front of horses on purpose. I watched several times just to be sure of what I was seeing. I knew as soon as the video went up that the right would be screaming violence from the police. Etc etc. I saw the same video. You're right. The horses were proceeding through the crowd. Many of the protesters stood aside until a couple of them decided to step out or were pushed right in front of the horse, there was a lot of pushing and shoving going on. If one choose to suddenly stand in front of a horse of that size one is bound to fall - the damn horse is bigger than a human. And if someone behind you decided to push you forward with no thought for your safety then they can't blame the horse or the rider for what happens next. There was no way that horse could have avoided what happened.

Don't start quoting numbers unless you've done a reputable survey of the protestors.
If we're going to pull numbers out of our asses/our visits to the scene, then I can just say "57.35% of the protestors agree w/white nationalism, Christian Nationalism, and/or the patriarchy."
I was expressing my opinion, not quoting a poll. Yet you used 99.99% as a basis, implying that your info was factual.

You know, I’m not really sure I understand why Trudeau did this. I’m not a Canadian but I would imagine invoking something like this has to meet a very high threshold because of the suspension of civil rights. From my understanding, Ottawa (specifically Parliament Hill and immediate periphery) is the only remaining stronghold. I have two cousins in Toronto and we were on the phone yesterday catching up. I raised the subject and they feel this will just inflame the situation. And freezing the protestors’ bank accounts without due process? I’m actually shocked that in Canada, of all places, this is even being contemplated against its citizens. What is Trudeau’s justification for invoking?
