We call it a fend for yourself night. We use this name as well. My parents used it and then I introduced it to DH & our kids. I will say, though, that there's one big difference. As a tween/teen "Fend for Yourself" nights meant you could eat whenever you wanted to, as well as finding whatever you could. But now, we still all sit down and eat together. We just eat our own things. We realized years ago that if we tried to let the dinner be completely whatever/whenever, the younger kid(s) would be all "But we never had dinner!" when bedtime rolled around. My kids are firmly attached to family dinner. Only pizza night is an exception. We started off with pizza night always being all of us in the living room watching a movie. But as the kids got older, we sometimes split up---DH & I in the kitchen in relative peace and the kids having their own pizza party of sorts in the living room.

We... don't do that? lol If I don't feel like cooking (and believe me, no one wants to eat DH's cooking), I either reheat leftovers and we all still sit down for dinner or we go out to eat.

When the kids were home, it was usually leftovers and we called it Fend For Yourself.
Now that it's DH and I, sometimes it's me throwing myself across the sofa dramatically and declaring an "I Can't!" night. As in I can't bear the thought of planning or prepping food and I have lost all ability to feed anyone.

When my kids were younger (school aged) and their Daddy was on call at the hospital, we sometimes had "YOYO dinner". YOYO stood for 'you're on your own' and anything you could find in the fridge or panty that wasn't simply a sweet/dessert was allowed. We also occasionally had "clean out the fridge Friday"; it didn't always happen on a Friday, however.
The meal was always shared at the table; it is something we have always done and still continue to do. We don't eat meals anywhere but at the dining table or a restaurant...snacks, now that's a different matter.

Fridge cleanout or freezer cleanout. Sometimes I'll tell DD or DH to go find the wooly mammoth, meaning there's no leftovers in the fridge - dig around in the freezer and see what you can come up with.

We call that getting takeout! We just have one standard size refrigerator (growing up we had two) and a small pantry and limited kitchen storage. The grocery store is 1 mile away and walmart 2 miles away (but can take 15 min. with traffic). So I usually shop every day or two and get just enough for that meal. So not usually anything sitting around to make a meal with.

If I don't feel like cooking, we get take out. As a kid we were never ever ever ever allowed to eat without permission, so we never had a fend for yourself night, and it never occurred to me to institute one.

Growing up my Mum always called it “duck and catch it”. I have no idea why or where the name came from.

My mother always called it "must go". Meaning everything in the fridge must go. So please eat whatever you can find. Of course in her Chicago accent it comes out sounding like musko. Which is pretty hilarious. I don't have her accent, but I do say it exactly the way she does. And yes, both of my parents talk exactly like that SNL skit where they are talking about da Bears. We moved to Michigan when I was 7. No accent here.

MYODD Make your own damn dinner. Heavy emphasis on the damn. My kids were high school graduates before I had to start having these nights. I swear, they were like little birds at dinner time peeping all over the kitchen at 5:30.

We call them Bag Meals. I always make big batches of any food that freezes well and I freeze individual portions in ziplock freezer bags. I’m allergic to a bunch of foods and can’t really eat something that I haven’t made myself. You can eat leftovers or a bag meal, but we just call it a Bag Meal night.

We call it Shitballs on Toast. When my MIL was raising three unruly boys and she didn’t feel like cooking, the response to “what’s for supper” was shitballs on toast. No one wanted shitballs on toast so they found their own food.

it depends - if I'm trying to empty the fridge...it's a smorgasbord but if it's a night where if you're hungry, go find something to eat? fend for yourself

It’s called on your own. Some of my kids hate it, but I love it bêcher I don’t have to cook and food doesn’t get wasted. We usually do it once a week or so.
