Interesting that some call it "grazing." We use that term for a "meal" consisting of lots of various appetizers (great for a movie or football night).

Interesting that some call it "grazing." We use that term for a "meal" consisting of lots of various appetizers (great for a movie or football night). I agree with you. We use multiple terms found in this thread, but they all mean something different. Fend for yourself is everyone makes their own dinner with whatever they can find. Grazing is setting out appetizers, dips, fruits, and veggies. Clean out the fridge/leftover night is I need y’all to eat up these specific things before they go to waste. And I’m kind of mystified by the peas who say they never do this. Like y’all really don’t ever tell your kids to find themselves something to eat and they each go make a box of Mac and cheese or Ramen or a frozen pizza or whatever? Never? Your kids never make their own dinner?

Fend for yourself, but if it’s mostly leftovers, then it’s Leftover Extravaganza “.

I say “it’s catch as catch can tonight”. It’s something my mom said. My youngest loves those nights, as she can just make herself a bowl of ramen or a cheese quesadilla and eat in her room.

Fend for yourself. Or make your own damn dinner, if I'm feeling particularly prickly.

We all still ate together for the most part. I would pull stuff out of the fridge/pantry that needed to be eaten. I called it buffet night. For us it was Thursday nights...right before Pizza Night Friday

It was so rare for this to happen when I was a kid we don’t have a name for it. We also always ate at the dinner table together unless it was Super Bowl or the Oscars. If I don’t feel like cooking we almost always have a frozen pizza on hand or we get take out.

We never, ever did that growing up. My mom cooked almost everything from scratch so there were always random leftovers. On the nights when there was a little bit left of a lot of things it was smorgasbord night. She would reheat everything she wanted gone and everyone could pick what they wanted from that but we never had breakfast for dinner or peanut butter sandwiches or anything like that.
At my house now it’s not really a thing. DH will cook dinner (or I will, on occasion) or we eat leftovers. DH would grill hamburgers or make a frozen pizza before he would ever eat a bowl of cold cereal for dinner.
Sometimes on the nights when he has one of his leagues and DD and I are home by ourselves, we might have something from a box or can, I’ll make eggs, pancakes, waffles, grilled cheese or a frozen pizza. I wouldn’t ever tell DD to eat whatever she could find because knowing her she would “find” Slim Jims and potato chips and dip. She eats enough of that junk as it is, so when mealtimes roll around I want to make sure she eats something somewhat decent.
