I am angered by this situation. My thoughts are the Russians should not be participating at all because of doping. The Russians are wanting a “clean sweep” in the Ladies Figure Skating. They want it so bad they will lie and cheat just to make it happen. I am not buying this “minor” crap. She qualifies to compete in the Ladies Figure Skating competition then she qualifies to follow the rules. And the “mistakingly took her grandfather’s heart medicine” is total bull crap. The Russians must think everyone is a stupid as the former. I am hoping someone on their team has a major fall or something happens that they can’t compete. I was hoping that they just wouldn't perform well and not be in medal contention anyway, but it doesn't sound like that happened based on a headline I just saw, saying that Valieva "broke down in tears" and that it appeared more people were cheering for her than others (wonder if all of the Russian athletes attended to "show their support"?

Interesting how concerned the IOC is with irreparable harm of the dirty athlete and not concerned with the harm of the clean athletes - yeah - sounds about right.

The "ROC" was formed so athletes could still compete but not for their country.... This is the part (well, one of the parts) that I don't understand. The "R" stands for "Russian" so how are they not competing for their country? lol. Even if they can't play the national anthem or march in under their flag they're still competing for Russia. There will still be celebrations and rewards for those who do well. The whole thing is ridiculous, and I don't understand why Russia gets all these second chances. Exactly, they’re for all intents and purposes still Russian athletes.

If she did accidentally take her grandfather's medication, what medication did she think she was taking?

And as several other athletes have said today already “This is the day the Olympic spirit died” The Olympics get dirtier and more corrupt by year. What a shame for all the athlete who are just trying to display their prowess. But, that much money and power inevitably leads to cut corners and dirty play.

If she did accidentally take her grandfather's medication, what medication did she think she was taking? I think I heard that she was 'contaminated' by drinking from the same cup, she didn't actually take anything. But that could be rubbish....I can't remember where I heard it

If she did accidentally take her grandfather's medication, what medication did she think she was taking? Oh she might have drank from grandads glass where his saliva might have been residual on it and that's why she tested positive - Russia just thinks we're all idiots and apparently the IOC agrees.

Sooooo.... I am watching Curling and Biathlon... Oh my, you rare unicorn Pea! A fellow biathlon follower here, whoa. *cough Loginov cough* (Another Russian caught doping but years ago - he did have a 2-year ban by the International Biathlon Union after they retested his sample and confirmed EPO and they also withdrew the titles he won in the meantime.) The "ROC" was formed so athletes could still compete but not for their country.... This is the part (well, one of the parts) that I don't understand. There will still be celebrations and rewards for those who do well. Putin flew over and was in the stands for the Opening Ceremony despite his country not officially competing. He had meetings and did PR with Xi Jinping while there. The ROC athletes are supposed to wear neutral gear approved by the IOC but most of them have added the Russian flag as an armband over their approved jacket for these Games. It's ridiculous. And a very public fuck you to the West while China and Russia show that they plan on being the next (very democratic, obviously) rulers of the world, economically, politically and ideologically. I'm probably the dissenting voice over the CAS decision as I've seen them take the same route for other (non Russian) athletes in other sports. I totally expected them to let her compete while they allow her defense to build a case (and possibly retest both samples?). It's still a very nasty smear on these Olympics that will be remembered. Her Russian coaches are throwing her innocence out like a shield: they let her walk alone through the press to the rink the day after we found she'd tested positive, letting her look young and forlorn on the world stage and now they're playing the dumb minor card by claiming she accidentally took a grandparent's medication. Bollocks and we all know it. But hey, that's the Russian propaganda machine. Now if only they limited their bullshit theories and media manipulations to their athletes...

It's so disappointing because she's so obviously incredibly talented.
I just caught up with this thing yesterday and wondered what the possible excuse could be. My grandfather's contaminated drinking glass? 🤣🤣😭😭

Interesting how concerned the IOC is with irreparable harm of the dirty athlete and not concerned with the harm of the clean athletes - yeah - sounds about right. My thoughts exactly. All of the focus is on her and how this could affect her. But what about the other athletes? This has caused drama for the whole sport, including past Olympians. How is it fair for the other athletes to have to miss their own time to shine when they have worked so hard and DON'T have dirty UA's?

Commentators - and former professional and medalist figure skaters - Tara Lipinsky (spelling?) and Johnny Weir have a nice interview on YouTube about this subject. The interviewer inquired about the minority status of the skater in question -- Tara said she had been testing since she was 11 years old and has always understood the impact of what goes in her body - similarly Johnny said said he'd been drug testing since he was 13 -- each of them said that their parent would call "hot lines" to make sure that ordinary cold medicine wouldn't be a prohibited item! Yes - the skater in question is a minor -- but she should totally be aware of what is and is not a banned substance. I simply do not believe the "confused by grandfathers medication" excuse. The Olympics are a joke that, IMHO, no one should take seriously. They have proved it over and over again. My son was on track to be a nationally ranked athlete in his sport before he "retired" at 12 years old in the world of Covid. We were well aware of things like we would need to go through special procedures to get his ADHD meds approved and had the list of what was not allowed, etc. And this was *before* he was technically competing on that level. So, yeah, I don't buy this. Athletes training at elite facilities without parents present (I don't know if that was the case here, I just figured it could be) have even less of an excuse in my opinion, as everyone at that facility should know that part of the job inside and out.

If you choose to smoke weed or "take your Grandfather's heart medication" then you have chosen to live with the consequences of your actions. The runner chose not to appeal the decision because she knows she broke the rules. ROC/Russia consistently break the rules and then cry when they are caught. They pay off some officials, get a hand slap and then continue doing it. The girl broke the rules, plain and simple. She needs to be held accountable. She won't die from not competing. She will get over it and be back in the next Olympics. She is young enough. Anyone who believes that she got the positive test from drinking from her grandfather's glass is really stupid. All the other athletes shouldn't be penalized because a select few think that the rules don't apply to them. What about the harm it is causing all the other athletes? I don't see how this a black or white issue. It is an issue of bribing officials. Am I the only one who thinks that maybe her coaches/doctors etc gave it to her to improve her performance and told her it was something else? I don't trust them and she is a child. I mean I get the issues, but I do feel for her and do not trust the Russian adults in charge of her. I believe that is a plausible scenario. Not saying that it happened, but I can see the possibility that it could have happened. And if it did happen? That just makes it more important that she is banned so that other countries/coaches are not encouraged to give minors performance enhancing drugs without their knowledge so they can maintain plausible deniability and remain eligible to compete.

Are they saying this was dissolved in water and she filled the empty cup after grandfather had finished his medication? If so, the idea that this would result in enough medication in her system to even register on a drug test is laughable. The medication was diluted once, and then the minor RESIDUE was diluted even more? I call bullshit on this one. I thought the Russians were good at math and science?

And with that line of thinking, we can all save money on medications! Just continue to drink out of the same cup we used when we swallowed our pill.

What I think is if she or her coaches had any integrity she would withdraw from the competition. At 16 she is still young enough to come back in 4 years and win her gold metal.
As it stands now, if she does win gold, what a lot folks believe will happen, there will be a footnote attach to the win. And not a flattering one.

Thanks for starting this thread - apparently pointing out the fact that Russia is continuing their decades long doping was too real for the figure skating thread. Well, the figure skating thread was intended for chat about the competition, not so much for an overview of the history of doping. I did report this story on that thread from the start, but wanted to also continue to appreciate the efforts of the skaters who have worked and sacrificed to get there. I think that their work and sacrifice is just as real as scandal and corruption. For everyone saying this ruling shows how corrupt the IOC is, the ruling was not made by the IOC. They have no jurisdiction. The ruling was made by the CAS, more info here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_of_Arbitration_for_Sport The IOC actually protested this ruling. She will get over it and be back in the next Olympics. She is young enough. She will not be back for the next Olympics. Skating fans know this. Her coach relies on starving the skaters to delay puberty and keep them light enough to get the jumps done. Her skaters burn out from overwork, eating disorders, injuries. It is great that Johnny Weir had adults around him who had his best interests at heart. How do we know if that is the case for Kamila? Did Johnny send his water bottle out to a lab to be analyzed before taking a drink after his coach handed it to him? No, because he didn't have to. Maybe Kamila should have. The idea that she could have been doping without the knowledge and/or assistance of her coach is as ludicrous as the "I drank my grandpa's medicine" story. I find it interesting that Johnny is so vehemently in favor of blaming the skater in this case. Could that have anything to do with his fetish for all things Russian? Before the Olympics Johnny spent quite a bit of time at this training facility, filming and interviewing the skaters. It was unprecedented behind the scenes access for the Olympics coverage and now will of course not be shown. Johnny doesn't criticize the coach because if the skater takes the blame and the coach comes through clear he will still be in her good graces and still be one of the "Russian insiders". He has been hyping these skaters and this coach and her training methods since before the last Olympics. When the blame is handed out for corruption in the sport, he's better get in line for his share.

Because the IOC is utterly corrupt. Thanks for starting this thread - apparently pointing out the fact that Russia is continuing their decades long doping was too real for the figure skating thread. The IOC can decide to just ban minors - I have zero problem with that - or adhere to the same rules. This minor "loophole" is just complete and utter bullshit. She doped - I don't for a second believe it was her decision - it's the EXACT SAME DRUG used in Sochi by the Russians. The Russians are cheaters and as long as the IOC continues their bullshit punishment their cheating will continue. Hmm, I really think you need to reread the figure skating thread. I think everyone was in agreement that she was doping and needed to be disqualified. I really wish the focus was on her horrible coaching team of Eteri Tutberidze instead of just focusing on Kamila. I think many skating fans, not just the ones that watch every 4 years, but the ones who watch closely every year know there has been an issue and not just doping but blatant over scoring of the Russian girls that are coached by Eteri. The whole system needs to be overhauled. It was always strange how only girls coached by Eteri Tutberidze had consistent quads. And girls who are coached by her get bonus points. Sadly, I really don't think there will be any consequences for the Russians. Eteri Tutberidze is held up as some model coach. However, it's a known fact that her skaters never compete beyond 17/18 because their bodies are so damaged.

Yes, they said that the athlete is responsible for what goes into his or her body. But they also talked about doping in general and Russia’s problem with this. I think Johnny did a good job of talking about this given his work there. They also talked about the age issue and that Kamila shouldn’t be let off the hook just because of her age. I agree with that. Do the coaches bare responsibility as well? Most likely. But she is also responsible for herself. It doesn’t have to be just one or the other. I don’t think the coaches gave her something that she didn’t know about, but even if they did, there needs to be a consequence for doing so. You seem to be putting more blame on Johnny Weir than you are on Valieva or even her coaches and that makes no sense.

If you chose to see it as a hand slap, that is on you. And Johnny flying to Russia doesn't make him culpable, I clearly stated what he needs to take responsibility for. You are picking and choosing and ignoring as you see fit. I am not interested in participating in a 10 page rant fest on this subject, so you'll have to carry on without me.

I was stunned to hear she is allowed to compete. Well, sort of. The delay in a decision kind of pointed to this. It taints not just the figure skating world, but the whole Olympic brand. Even more than it has been tainted in the last few years decades.

And they wonder why viewership is so bad.

This is just sad all the way around. Unfair to just about everyone. To the folks who really follow this; have the Russians become the new East Germans? Different drugs, of course. I guess that I want to know, is this limited to the Russian skaters?

What is the history of the CAS and why do they have the final say instead of the IOC?
