I’m cynical enough of both the Olympics and the Russians, to think that podium result was entirely calculated. 🤨🧐😕

these sports are meaningless without eyeballs every 4 years. I read that viewership was way down for these. Not sure where. Probably something on the list of news headlines on my phone. I didn't click on it. I just read the title. I’m cynical enough of both the Olympics and the Russians, to think that podium result was entirely calculated. 🤨🧐😕 Right after the one Russian (not the doper) skated the short program, Johnny said, that is a really weird score. The judging is so off tonight. She fell once during the short program but he said it didn't matter because she had so many quads in her long program. I didn't know if he meant her score was high or low for the short program though.

I just watched snd that was so weird. I feel bad for the girl that won she looked so lost. Not happy like someone that just won a gold medal. I’m glad they got the medal ceremony for the lady the was in third place she deserved to have that moment.
No idea if I will watch next time as this time had too much drama. I almost didn’t watch but figured I wanted to see once I heard the outcome. It’s a shame I used to really enjoy but with all the scandals I may not bother in the future.
I hope those involved with doping get some kind of real punishment- I mean the adults as they are the ones that continue to do it with each new group of girls. Not going to hold my breath though.

Does China even care that it has low viewership? I would think not having spectators would hurt the profit too. 🤷♀️

Spectator ticket fees are a drop in the bucket. I would think that not having to host large Olympic Villages for the athletes in these COVID-times is a big money-saver. Regardless, the main people who profit from viewership numbers are the worldwide networks that cover it and charge advertising and/or streaming fees.

It was disgusting to say the least. The coach wasn’t in the kiss and cry for Anna’s score. She was with the Kamila. Then to leave Anna alone after she won the gold. I guess the coaches wanted her to feel guilty for winning? The silver medalist’s temper tantrum bothered me as well. Obviously she is bothered by the attention given to Kamila. Her program was nothing but jumps. No artistic value at all. (Obviously I am a couch figure skating judge). The adults in this situation should be ashamed for putting so much pressure on their skaters. For encouraging doping etc. That coach and her facility needs to be investigated more. I felt sorry for all the skaters. To go out there and skate your best knowing that there was a big chance there would be no medal ceremony had to be hard on everyone. Like others have said, Kamila should not have competed at all. I would hope the IOC will step in and do something. I am afraid they won’t though. They have already been bought.
I just hope SLC doesn’t get awarded the Olympics again.

I’m cynical enough of both the Olympics and the Russians, to think that podium result was entirely calculated. 🤨🧐😕 My conspiracy theory is that Kamila was instructed to fall…to take the heat off and salvage two medals. I understand falling apart under pressure but a skater like Kamila to fall apart like she did is just unbelievable to me. It would also explain why the second place girl was so mad…she hated skating and would never skate again.

I read an article last night (wish I could remember what site it was on) and they talked about the amount of the banned substance that was in her system, and it was 200 times the amount that someone else in the past had who successfully claimed contamination. They said that the amount was similar to what you would expect if you were “tailing down” after having taken a full dose several days earlier. I’m curious if they just didn’t stop their “supplements” soon enough for her to get it out of their system? And it makes me wonder about the other Russian athletes as well. The article also said that the other two substances make her claim of accidental exposure much less believable. What Lipinski and that guy (can't remember his name, Wier?) said that they could be drug tested at any point. They had to have hour by hour logs of what they did, took, ate, etc. on the off chance that something came back wonky.

They really need to follow through with the idea of one location for winter and one location for summer and every game is played there. This one has been a shitshow. Fake snow that has all the athletes falling! Japan and their substandard living conditions and inability to get it finished. That way they can maintain two locations and they will know what to expect. No one makes any money off of this and most venues will be abandoned. It doesn't make any sense.

The number of cities that could reliably host the Winter Olympics is decreasing remarkably, due to global warming. Here’s an article from The Guardian which discusses a report that says of the 20 Winter Olympic venues since 1924, it’s believed only 10 will have the 'climate suitability' and natural snowfall levels needed to host an event by 2050. And only ONE (Sapporo, Japan) will be reliably able to host them by the end of this century (which of course is more that 20% gone). And to be fair to Beijing, although all the snow there was artificial it’s not the first Olympics to use artificial stuff. Apparently the 2014 Sochi Games used 80% man-made snow, and the 2018 Games in South Korea used closer to 90%. The 2010 Games in Vancouver meant all sorts of strategies had to be employed to ensure there was enough snow. The Guardian: Canada’s Mild Climate…..

The United States has hosted both Summer and Winter Olympics. Are you saying that we shouldn't have hosted both? I am confused by this post. Maybe you could say more and clarify? Are you confusing Japan and China? Japan isn’t hosting these games. Your post has me very confused and stymied as to how to helpfully respond.

I don't want to speak for peppermintpatty but there was a discussion earlier in the week about the lack of sustainability and waste with Olympic venues changing every 4 years, there was a proposal to keep the same handful of cities so that there is at least some reuse of the venues

That was not my first read of her post at all, but I can see, with the additional info, what she was getting at. I don't know if I like the idea of one country being the host country for all forthcoming winter or summer games. For a variety of political issues. There is no ideal host country for ALL future winter or summer games. How would the Usa feel about all future winter Olympics being held in China/Soviet Union? Or how would those countries feel about all summer Olympics being held in North America?

If the same cities/facilities would be used every 4 years, but what about the villages/housing units. Would they sit empty or if used should people be moved out every 4 years?
