gar It's beautiful, Scotland is wonderful except for the midgies. The silence accorded the funeral procession is striking too. Not so much on the east coast! Did you see the tractors line the road? That was touching and the riders on their horses too.

I was heartened by the numbers lining the route and surprised at how quiet they were. I read the police arrested someone with a box of eggs but I would imagine the crowd would have gone for him had he started to throw them.

I don't understand why Timothy Laurence didn't bow his head or even salute (do retired officers still salute?) when the coffin was entering Holyroodhouse. Am I missing something?

No I thought the same thing! It was very noticeable beside Princess Anne wasn’t it. Maybe he was saluting as the hearse pulled up and the camera didn't show that. I've seen my military brother do that, salute as a coffin arrives. I shall ask him what the protocol is. I'm not having a go at VA Laurence, just curious.

When she passes, my fingers are crossed that Charles steps aside and let’s William become king. I just can’t stomach Charles. Exactly what I expected from Charles. Ugh

my fingers are crossed that Charles steps aside and let’s William become king Well that was never, ever (ever!) going to happen...so a complete waste of time even thinking about it. He will never "step aside", in fact he just pledged to devote his entire life to service, just as his mother did. He will die in the job. As for the video, what is your point exactly? It's a tiny desk and those are inkwells, would a better option have been for him to knock them off and have the ink spill onto the carpet? Then they could make little videos about how clumsy he is? and why would someone put those things directly in front of the person who is about to sign some very large documents? Of course they are in the way and motioning for them to be moved is appropriate. And let's not forget his mother just died, on a personal level he's grieving as well as having to carry out all these very public duties. I had 3 days off after my father died, and still burst into tears at work the day I went back because someone was sitting at my desk. Bet you would have loved a video of that to roll your eyes at too.

If that is as close as he gets to losing his cool in public, I wouldn't worry about him.

If that is as close as he gets to losing his cool in public, I wouldn't worry about him. I don't think that video is a big deal either. He didn't pick up the ink apparatus and throw it at anyone, he just motions for it to be moved. What was he supposed to do, set it on the ground? Hold it on his lap? Was there historical significance to that desk? Or did they just find the tiniest desk they could? Honestly I would be annoyed myself if I had to sit in front of a room of people staring at me, knowing a good chunk of the world was watching as well, while I had to sit at a TV tray sized desk with poster sized papers to sign all because my mother had just died.

It seemed he really wanted to highlight the ink wells from William and Harry he wanted to use to sign and was trying to subtly have the other ones removed. Sadly a communication problem as the other pens were there for William who asked for them back. (Lefty not wanting to drag fresh ink on the document). Tiny desk, ink spill potential all over critically important documents on little rest and terrible stress and grief. Not to mention whatever ails his swollen hands. I’m sure many folks have had a boss gesture/grimace about a conference/table/desk etc set up when something was off but they were trying not to make a scene. 🤷♀️

Ugh The man is grieving and struggling and you can’t allow him some grace? The desk was far too small for such large documents, it would have been easy for someone to give some assistance.

I’d be interested to see what your brother thinks gillyp. Apparently he, VA Laurence, should not have saluted as he wasn’t in uniform and big brother says he did give a nod. I don’t think it was noticeable to many of us, maybe it was a slight tip forward of the head. Whatever he did, it would have been correct, I was just curious. Some more unseen ceremonial proceedings about to start at Westminster Hall. I noticed the Lord walking with Black Rod is wearing a black arm band but many in the military groups yesterday didn’t. I wonder if that’s because “their sovereign” has not died, their sovereign is King Charles. All this pageantry and symbolism and history is fascinating.

Love all the ceremony of it. It is still weird hearing ‘His Majesty’ - I think that’s going to take a while to get used to.

Here's my question for this morning... Is the spouse of the monarch supposed to be very subdued when they sing the national anthem? I was watching some YouTube videos of various services and ceremonies with the Queen, and Prince Philip never seemed to move his mouth much at all. And just now at the address to Parliament Camilla also hardly moved her mouth. But they showed some of the other people there and they were all singing fairly enthusiastically. I've noticed this in the past with Prince Philip but never remembered to ask until now. lol

This isn’t exactly an every day event is it and there’s so many things I would miss if it weren’t for the commentaries from some of the experts 😊

My grandmother would probably say it’s not the done thing to be seen with your mouth wide open in public.

Camilla is not used to singing it about her husband and probably didn’t think it appropriate to be too enthusiastic since they are all in mourning.

I really like The King’s new look, it suits him. He definitely looks like a king. I do hope he has managed to have some sleep since Thursday. He has been so busy, he must be exhausted.

I agree it suits him. It must be beyond hard to have to mourn so publicly. They’ve barely had a moment in private have they. So much ceremonial duty to go through.

It’s amazing to see so much ceremony. I can’t stop watching! I had thought about the Queen dying, but it didn’t occur to me that there would be so much ceremony for the new King. I’m proud to be British right now! (Not felt that for a while!!)

This is an interesting insight as to how quickly things changed with regards to the Queen. Jenna Bush was there to meet with Camilla for both of their bookclubs and was there the morning that the Queen died:

Crumbs, that’s quite a time to have been with Charles and Camilla. It does show how even the closest family were not expecting her to go downhill so very quickly.

Even from my American no-nothing-about-English-protocols perspective, it was glaring enough to make me go back and watch a second time, sure I'd missed something! ETA: Ah, seeing more of a possible explanation after I posted. Much aside from the loss of the Queen, I'm finding this all very educational.

I don’t know if anyone else is watching the scenes live from Edinburgh, but I’m so moved by it all! I guess this is what a state funeral looks like.
