I was at school today so I missed most of the walk with the hearse... I need to go find a video. I did see the beginning bit of it because it was right at the end of my lunch break, but then I had to go do 4th grade math. (ugh, lol) I'm not at all tired of seeing it. So interesting and sad and beautiful, and I've learned a lot that I didn't know before the Queen died. In fact I borrowed a few books from the library about the Queen and British history. Also, as a Presbyterian I loved hearing the Scottish Parliament... All the same vocabulary we use here in our church government.

Just wanted to let you all know, I’m watching, too. I am with you in spirit. (Just wanted to add … when a former U.S. president dies, our TV news has wall-to-wall coverage of his life and times from the moment of death until the funeral. It kind of annoys the snot out of me because I know there is other news happening out there besides a dead president, and three days in, I am *over it*. No such compunction in this case. I have not tired of the coverage of the Queen’s life and times, the new King’s experience, the family scandals, the pageantry … nope. Keep it coming.) In some ways the rituals are interesting, but I am over the constant coverage. I'm perfectly fine with showing what is happening each day, but there is only so much you can say or speculate about the family, watching people walk through the cathedral, etc. I feel for the family. All of it must be really tiring, especially when grieving. I do like seeing all of the old buildings. It is hard to believe that there are buildings that old that are still being used. Old buildings are very much used and if necessary, repurposed, our village church dates from the 10th century. If you like history it's like a 3d book, the other day in one of the ceremonies in St James palace, the commentator mentioned there was a stone fireplace in one of the rooms with the initials H and A craved into it, Henry the 8th and Anne Boleyn! Even older parts of the landscape are the roads and routes built by the Romans that were just resurfaced and used to this day. You can spot them on maps in the south, they are very straight roads. The Romans didn't do bends.

So I've found an excellent channel on YouTube, the Royal Family Channel. I'm watching the video of today's Royal Mile walk, plus a lot of extra stuff at the beginning that I didn't see when I started watching on my lunch hour today. I have questions, lol.
1. The video showed the King reviewing the troops that were outside the castle (this was before they started the walk with the Queen's coffin). He went up and down the rows and every so often he'd stop and talk to a soldier. Is that just random? I mean, it wasn't people who he knew...? I wonder what he's saying to them.
2. Do all the members of the royal family join the military and that's why they wear the uniforms? Or is it just ceremonial because of their titles?
3. Is there a particular reason why Anne and Edward held their swords in their left hands, but the King had his in his right?
4. Who were all the other people who were walking behind the hearse?
That's it for my questions for now, but I'm only a little way into it so I might have more later. lol

That's it for my questions for now, but I'm only a little way into it so I might have more later. lol I'll have a shot. 1. I believe it's random and just general chit chat, maybe about the medals or other parades. 2. A bit of both. Most have been in the armed forces, some have seen live action. In the main the titles Colonel in Chief, Commander etc are bestowed on them rather than them moving up the ranks. 3. All had their swords in the left hand. King Charles was carrying a staff in his right hand, presented to him by The Queen. 4. Immediately behind the Royal siblings was Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, Princess Anne's husband, in uniform. IIRC he was flanked by two members of the Royal household, who might have been protection officers as they have been around The King the last few days. They were in morning suits. I don't recall there being another line of walkers so in the first car was The Queen Consort and the Countess of Wessex.

My Goodness, the Queen’s children are doing her proud! I can’t imagine the atmosphere at the vigil in St Giles Cathedral.

I just read that Harry will not be wearing his military uniform but that Andrew has been given permission to wear his uniform to the funeral. Harry will be wearing a suit and will be able to wear his medals.
This is a directive from King Charles III Though Andrew, 62, and Harry, 37, will likely be seen in mourning dress (dark suits) for the scheduled events, a special exception has been granted for the Duke of York to wear a military uniform at the final vigil as a sign of respect for the late monarch, who "peacefully" died at age 96 on September 8.
Prince Andrew spent 22 years in the Royal Navy, serving as a helicopter pilot in the Falklands War in 1982. He was stripped of his military titles and royal patronages in January 2022 after he was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, a victim of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's former ring.
Prince Harry, who served in the British Army for a decade, lost his three honorary military titles (Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington and Commodore-in-Chief, Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command) when he and wife Meghan Markle stepped back from their senior royal roles in March 2020.
The decision on uniforms differs from Prince Philip's funeral at Windsor Castle in April 2021, when Buckingham Palace announced that no senior royal family members would wear traditional military uniforms.

I don't understand why he can no longer be respected as member of the military even though he has left public life as a royal.

Harry will be wearing a suit and will be able to wear his medals. This is a directive from King Charles III I heard that Prince Andrew is going to be allowed to wear military uniform for the very last vigil at Westminster Abbey as he still holds the rank of Vice Admiral, but he won’t wear it for the funeral. Prince Harry won’t wear military uniform as he no longer holds a military role. Even though some think Harry should be allowed to wear it, it’s said that this would set a precedent for Andrew to wear his uniform at future events.

I believe in the monarchy and loved the Queen, but there is no way I’d queue for 35 hours to see her lying in State. If I was told that the wait was 35 minutes I’d have second thoughts.

I don't understand why he can no longer be respected as member of the military even though he has left public life as a royal. From what I've read that's not correct. Only working members of the royal family will be wearing their uniforms at the funeral - that excludes both Harry and Andrew. Both were stripped of their military appointments/patronages by the queen. Andrew hasn't worn a uniform at any of the events so far and he won't be allowed to wear it at the funeral either. There has been one small exception made that he will be allowed to wear it when all of her children do the final vigil of her coffin "as a mark of respect for the Queen", and I assume that statement means that was something she especially asked for. Both the Queen and Prince Philip are known to have been very involved in planning their own funerals and if this is something she really wanted, then I think Charles is right to allow it.

I was shocked when I read that..35 hours?? There's literally no-one I'd queue up that long for, although I do think it's admirable that so many people are willing to do it. I watched some of the live feed from Scotland and it was very moving to see the people of all ages file past and give a bow or a curtsy.

I’m exhausted from watching all that King Charles has done in the last 6 days! He has my upmost respect. He and Camilla have not put a foot wrong. The more I watch, the more I feel that The Queen has left us in good hands.

There was a time when I was unsure about Charles as King, but the past year or two, and especially the past week, have changed my mind completely. He will be a different kind of monarch from his mother, but I am looking forward to seeing what his reign brings to the UK and the Commonwealth. My opinion about Camilla is also now quite positive. It is obvious that their relationship is very strong, and that she is going to be a great support to him

I am watching the BBC coverage of today's events, and just now the cortege leaving St Giles Cathedral for the journey to London. As throughout all the coverage, I am so impressed by the way they are covering this. Appropriate commentary when needed, but also not being afraid to just stay silent and allow us to watch some of the more solemn moments and let them sink in. I hope it continues through Monday to the funeral.

I agree sueg. Inane remarks are not required! As The Queen is about to leave Scotland, I must say how well they have taken care of Her Majesty. London will have had many rehearsals over the years for a high profile death and I can't imagine Scotland would have had similar preparation yet all involved appear to have been able to step up and provide quiet, considered, dignified care. The nation should be extremely proud. I am heartened by the response of the public too, in all parts of the UK, both on their reception of the Proclamation and on receiving King Charles on his travels. The quiet solemnity, the applause, the spontaneous "God Save the King" calls, I find the whole thing very moving and so nice in a world where lack of respect for your fellow human being has been coming to the fore.

The more I watch, the more I feel that The Queen has left us in good hands. And it just keeps crossing my mind that he is 73 years old! I mean, I know that age doesn't mean the same thing it once did, but I don't care who you are - at 73 you don't have the same energy or stamina of a 40 year old. I know this is what he was raised to do, but that doesn't mean it's easy.
