I’m kind of thinking the bigger threat to this country is not some arms dealer but angry white males who can legally buy AR-15s and then use school kids, or members of the gay community, or co-workers for target practice. Oh, FFS!! Find another topic. Truth hurts.

It’s not like Russia was giving anyone a choice about who came home. Whelan was never on the table for a swap as far as Russia was concerned. Biden brought home who he was able to bring home. He can’t force Russia to deal on Whelan. He did what was possible. Lol. Of course not. Thank you for stating the obvious. 🤷🏼♀️ A whole lot of people including you are making it sound like Biden had some choice in who to bring home. It may be obvious but it’s being ignored in a lot of the comments.

For exactly the reason I am not a judge, or a politician or a police officer, I don't want to pass judgment on someone else's life or alter the path of someone's life based on limited, incorrect, or false information.
I recognize that I will never know the vast majority of all this going on, nor do I really want to.
One thing I do know though, it seems the Whelan family seems to understand how awful it is to have a loved one detained in such a horrible situation, and they are being very classy about it. I do hope he comes home.
That said, I'm sick and tired of all my "patriotic" social media friends (I'm former military) etc running their mouths about "freeing the druggie before the patriot." That dude was dishonorably discharged for being a thief. He forfeited all that respect from me. That's not to say that I think he should be held in a Russian forced labor camp til he keels over, that's just to say that the tag of "Patriot and served his country" is sure hot helping me to have warm fuzzies and take up support of his cause. I sure hate the whole propaganda thing that we allow ourselves to be spoon fed these days.
That said... I'm not sure why Brittney Griner doesn't get sent immediately to a jail/prison here. It is illegal to have cannabis OR cannabis oil (whether you personally believe it to be wrong or right) in an airport, as federal law applies. Every pot conviction in the US should be overturned before she's let out.

I think an airport would be federal jurisdiction? I know they have not taken the additional step to de-criminalize simple possession, but I don't think they're prosecuting cases at the federal level, either.

It is illegal to have cannabis OR cannabis oil (whether you personally believe it to be wrong or right) in an airport, as federal law applies. You can have up to 0.3% THC. “Marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the FDA. (See the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, Pub. L. 115–334.) TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state, or federal authorities.”

Time for the U.S. to start rounding up the Russian mob members and putting them in prison. I am happy Griner is home. I will never side with a foreign country's unjust punishment for crimes. I know you would all be singing a different tune if it was your loved one. Exactly. We regularly sanction countries for human rights violations, but the peas' response to American citizens suffering those same violations is, oh well, you get what you deserve. The mind boggles.

No one expects consensus on those threads. It's a colloquialism. Of course there are varied opinions here. Some of them - belonging to some of the peas - are that people who go overseas and find themselves in trouble should just recognize that they now deserve to be treated inhumanely. You seem awfully defensive for someone who allegedly does not hold the views I'm talking about.

Do you know what the percentage was of what she had? If not, it's moot, right?

She hasn't been charged in the US, nor has she been held. Time served in Russia doesn't necessarily translate. I'm not a criminal, nor do I play one on tv. Aren't state and federal charges different and served separately? Why should a foreign charge be time served? Really, I don't care, but how many of these other folks got charged with other things by being caught with pot? Edited to flesh out above statement: In other words, without a dog sniffing out the pot, or the smell wafting, law enforcement likely wouldn't be allowed to search persons or property. Were those charges dropped too? (sorry can't recall who said federal charges may have already been dropped.)

The maximum sentence for drugs in Russia is 10 years. She received a sentence of 9 years for being found with less than 1 gram of drugs. Which if the Independent is correct in their research the sentence, for the amount found, should have resulted in a fine and a maximum of 15 days in the slammer instead of the 9 year sentence she was given. That after waiting 10 months for a trial.”

You seem awfully defensive for someone who allegedly does not hold the views I'm talking about. I don't think I sound defensive at all. And I don't hold those opinions. I often try to give out both sides. Esp the republican side, being that I am surrounded by them, and hear it all. It's good to hear what the other side is saying, right? discuss and debate all the sides? I would hate to be so narrow minded that I only followed, heard, and read about one side.

This makes complete sense to me. So now I'm realizing she did know she had the cannabis oil in her suitcase and she knowingly brought it into Russia. She did this because with her celebrity status she'd gotten away with it before in the past due to her perks which included a less involved security check. Because of this I think she was a complete idiot and I'm not happy with the prisoner exchange. It was against the law in Russia with severe penalties and most adults realize things can change in life-often without warning. Had Brittney never seen one episode of "Locked Up Abroad"? I don't know about you but when I was a teen in 1978 the movie "Midnight Express" came out and I never forgot it. Cured me of ever even thinking of taking anything illegal on an airplane! I think Brittany thought her "celebrity" status would protect her. I'm angry a notorious arms dealer was released from our custody and sent home to do who knows how much damage in the future to innocent lives because this young woman thought the rules didn't apply to her . Do you believe this now because of speculation from some on this thread? Or do you know for a fact that is what happened? The only person who knows "for a fact" what really happened is Brittney Griner. The rest of us depend on watching the news, reading the reports and using our experiences and intelligence to form our own opinions. Last I checked this was a forum where we were allowed to share those opinions. Where we didn't need to be experts, lawyers, or involved in cases being discussed in order to post. We all have opinions. We might not all agree. What I shared above is my opinion. I'm sure lots of folks disagree and that's okay. How boring of a world would it be if everyone had the same opinion on everything?

Ah they totaled the gram weight of the drug in each container to come to a total amount of the drug in both containers to be less then one gram. So I’m not sure where you are getting a it’s a percentage. By the way the bolded part was copied out of the article I used and is linked in the post where I shared this information if you would like to read the entire article. 2. The value 0.3% represents a percent. Percent is generally calculated using weight and volume. In this instance it sounds like there were potentially two instances that either were, or were not over 0.3%. We were talking about US Federal laws (since it can be deduced that she brought it to Russia after obtaining it in the US and traveling to Russia via a US airport, under Federal jurisdiction.) Now, whether that is true or not, who knows. This is based on her statement that she "didn't know." 2) I don't, in any way, doubt that she is being treated like a political pawn. But I also don't doubt that either she took it to Russia (breaking US Federal law) or she obtained it in Russia (thus breaking their law.) Further, she fully intended to bring it back to the US (again breaking a law... my guess is that is that bring it into the US is way more serious (for the US) than possession on the way out of the country, but who knows...) Soooooo *she chose* to break at least one law somewhere around in this mess, and put herself in the position of being used as a political pawn. And in doing so, highlighted the fact that the White House prioritized her return for some reason over the other Americans being held abroad. It is difficult to ignore the optics. It is also difficult to ignore the increased danger for Americans traveling overseas due to her carelessness, or privilege, or entitlement. Pick at least one word. Oh, you don't think she was released based on her celebrity and privilege? Why is Marc Fogel still in Russia? Been there longer, and had a prescription for his pot, and is a lowly teacher. 14 year sentence. www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/07/28/marc-fogel-teacher-russia-prison/

Interesting article from NYT on a little of the behind the scenes negotiations. Russia initially asked for Vadim Krasikov, possibly as a delaying tactic in order to avoid giving Biden a victory before the midterms. Krasikov was tried and convicted in Germany for the murder of a Chechen fighter. He's not even in US custody, so it was a non-starter. Russia considers both Grenier and Bout criminals. To them, Whalen is a spy, and they were only willing to trade spy for spy. The US does not currently have any Russian spies in custody. www.nytimes.com/2022/12/09/us/politics/brittney-griner-prisoner-swap.html

You know that is you have cannabis in ab airport, the TSA either ignores it or they confiscate it, right? You'd have to have an awful lot of it for them to even consider arresting you.

L. 115–334.) TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state, or federal authorities.” The .3% THC is the amount of THC that a hemp product can have and still be legal/considered non-cannabis. And the TSA does not care. If they find it, they generally either ignore it or confiscate it. To be arrested at the airport for having a personal use amount of cannabis would be rare.

Here you go… “In Russia, cannabis is illegal. An individual possessing less than 6 grams of cannabis or two grams of hash can be fined or jailed for up to 15 days. Possessing any more than that becomes a more serious criminal offense.Griner was accused of having less than a gram.“Being sufficiently aware that the movement of narcotic drugs is not allowed… no later than February 17, 2022 at an unspecified location under unspecified circumstances from an unidentified person [Ms Griner] bought two cartridges for personal use, which contained 0.252 grams and 0.45 grams of hash oil, totaling 0.702 grams,” the prosecutor said during the trial, TASS reported.”3. That after waiting 10 months for a trial.” Ok, so having been military in foreign countries and also traveling a good deal internationally, the local laws don't necessarily equal the laws for visitors. My response that you quoted was regarding *percentage* not weight. They are not the same thing.... 3. The lady is not Russian. The laws of citizens often don't translate to visitors. 9 1/2 years for cannabis oil? In a penal colony? Wow. I think that she has been punished more than enough. What she did was stupid. She has paid a pretty high price already.

1. 2. So other then the real possibility Russia is/was treating Griner as a political pawn in Russia’s ongoing goal to stick it to the United States every chance they get do you know for a fact if Russia’s laws for citizens don’t translate to visitors or are you just guessing? 1) You began quoting me and giving me irrelevant quantitative information as a result of my response to katlady saying "You can have up to 0.3% THC." The value 0.3% represents a percent. 14 year sentence. www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/07/28/marc-fogel-teacher-russia-prison/I get it now that I looked this up. “delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol”. “She chose” and you know this how? I mean she said in the rush of packing she included whatever those things were by mistake. So you are saying she is lying? How do you know the TSA found it when she left the country? I mean they find a lot of stuff like the cat in the suitcase but that doesn’t mean they find everything all the time. Maybe she honestly didn’t know she packed the stuff until the Russians found it. Maybe she was the only one Putin was willing to put up for exchange or maybe we worked to get her home first because she was a woman and for once being a woman was a plus especially in a situation like this. I don’t know the details because I was not in the room during the negotiations and I hazard a guess neither were you or any the peas that have posted on this thread. Or the members of Congress who are busy on Fox News criticizing the trade. A lot of assumptions are being made without any facts to back them up. I use to think it was kind of fun making assumptions about something but these days too many people take assumptions as the gospel even if there is no proof to back up the assumptions being made. I ‘m glad she’s home and now the Biden Administration had better get cracking and bring the other two Americans home as well. And any other Americans being held in Russia.

I'm not following your whole lump all the Ps together in some sort of big pileup. I think there are many varied opinions on here, and on this thread. If you hate the Ps opinions so much, why are you here? LOL I don't believe I lumped anyone in? We commonly use "the peas" here to generalize, as in WDTPT threads. Stupid is as stupid does. More intelligent and less narcissistic people wouldn’t be dumb enough to take an illegal substance into a foreign country, let alone Russia. I hope griner has a better view of our national anthem now that she’s back.
