Open. If DS is here and not going to be when we are, we close it and he opens it when he goes to bed. If we have company, we sleep with the door closed.

When I was a kid I was forced to sleep with my door wide open - I hated it. I kept it open when I had kids so they could be easily heard. Now I sleep with the door cracked so the cats can come and go. I would prefer it be shut for privacy reasons. I should put in a cat door. (Makes a mental note.)

I prefer the door closed for both noise & safety reasons. But right now I need to hear if my ancient dog gets up if I’m not sleeping with him.

I prefer open to hear noises, especially now with a baby. However, we keep all bedroom doors closed for fire safety reasons. same (minus the baby…)

Open.
Because we live with a cat in our house and Jesse (our cat) can't open our bedroom door. He'd just sit outside of the door and cry and howl to be let in. Or out. And back in again. Repeat throughout the night.
He can open some other doors in the house, but not that one.
If I want uninterrupted sleep I go to bed with the bedroom door left open.

If it's just me and parents/dogs, then I keep it open.
If aunts are here and sleeping in room across the hall, it's closed.

Closed because firemen recommend it to stop spread in the event of fire it’s just the two of us and we don’t have any pets. We keep it open out of habit from having cats and not k owing better, but have been meaning to switch precisely because of this.

What an interesting question. I always sleep with the door open. It’s what I’m used to and it’s good for air flow.

Closed. I go to bed before anyone else and the light and noise would keep me awake. Our electric toothbrush flashes a bright blue light randomly and it is in direct line of sight where I sleep if the door was open. OMG! WHY do they have them designed to do that? Mine flashes a bright white light and it DRIVES ME NUTS. I put a piece of black electrical tape over it so it wouldn’t show. I still have to close the ensuite bathroom door though because we have random animals that come through the yard setting off the outdoor motion lights at all hours of the night. The light comes through the bathroom windows even if the blinds are closed and the light wakes me up. To answer the poll though, I had to click Oprah because at home it’s always open (unless we have house guests, then we close it) but at the lake cabin it’s always closed at night. I like to be able to hear if my kid is sick and for the dog to be able to go downstairs if he hears anything. Now the weird thing is, when my DH is out of town for whatever reason, my kid likes to sleep in my room and she likes the door closed to trap the dogs inside with us, so that’s what we always do. When she is in her own room, the door is closed at night about 98% of the time with the only exceptions being if it’s super hot or super cold. Then the door to her room needs to be open for airflow. In the summer, the AC unit is in the attic directly above her room so it gets really cold in there. Plus that room is on the NW corner of the house so in the winter it also gets really cold then because the warm air from the rest of the house can’t circulate. At the lake I like it closed because the sun comes in from that direction. My bedroom is adjacent to the great room which has a huge wall of windows on the north east. At 5:00 am when the sun comes up and bounces off the water, the light effect coming in is doubled and nobody needs it that bright that early especially on the weekends. If I could sleep in a totally dark, quiet cave I would love it.

Closed. My husband was a firefighter. Sleeping with the door closed gives you a much higher chance of survival if a fire occurs while you are sleeping.

Closed for fire safety. I once saw a video on the difference of a house fire with doors open and closed, that settled it for me.

My answer would have been different at other times in my life, but currently we always sleep with the door closed.
Three main reasons: 1 - privacy as we still have a 22 y/o living at home 2 - that 22 y/o works night shift do he's up all night even on the nights that he doesn't work 3 - our two GSDs are in the room with us, and I prefer to not have them wandering the house at night

My husband can’t seem to sleep with the door closed. He’s concerned someone will break in and he won’t hear them.

If just SO and I are home, open. I feel too cut off with the door closed. If we have guest, we close it. Also, we used to have a cat, so we left the door open for him to roam around. When the boys were home, everyone closed their bedroom doors.

I am married to a retired firefighter so bedroom door is always closed.
Given that all these firefighters know best about fire risk, I would go with what they say about mitigating the fire spread risk and also carbon monoxide risk.
Carbon monoxide is a killer: A bedroom with its door left open has about 10,000 PPM CO (parts per million of Carbon Monoxide), which is extremely toxic. A bedroom with a closed door has approximately 100 PPM CO.
Now ask these peas with a firefighter in the family how many smoke detectors and CO detectors they have. 😜

Always open unless we have overnight guests, mostly for airflow.

Closed. Always. We have no pets that roam the house.
As a child it was because the black stair monster would be waiting outside to get me. I'm not scared of him any more, but I'm always happier with the bedroom door shut.

Open so the cat can come and go. He’s getting dementia and howls bloody murder at night if he can’t find us right away. That and the heat and AC are more balanced with the doors open.

I know I should keep it closed because of fires but I keep it open for my cat. The one that just died would sleep with me every night and I wanted to make sure he had access to the litter box. My remaining cat doesn't sleep with me (which makes me sad) but I want her to have that option.

When I was little my dad was a fireman. He insisted we have our bedroom doors closed when we slept. Closed because it would put something between us and a fire if one happened.
