I’ve been to 11 of them. The most eastern state I have been in is Minnesota from taking my son to the Mayo Clinic for his cancer treatments. We drove for most of his visits and I tried to make it like a little vacation for him, seeing things along the way and going different routes each time so that he saw several different states. He had this idea to collect a little dirt from each state we went through. It was actually very interesting to see the color variation from sandy to red to dark almost black colors of earth as we made our way east. I wish I had taken a picture of them after he placed each one on a giant map of the states. I had transferred the dirt samples into small clear glass tubes and labeled them. We were surprised to see that some of the dirt was near the same color from north to south, but no two samples were exactly the same shade.
I would plan his trips well in advance, letting him choose whether we went north, south, or middle highway routes . Then he would study what was available to see along each route and make a list of what he wanted to see. He actually loved that most of the rest stop areas in Nebraska were near a little lake where he could fish. He always fished with barbless hooks that I had carefully filed the barb off of so the fish were not hurt too much. In one Nebraska lake he actually had a giant frog bite his line and he got it all the way back to shore before we realized it was a huge frog. Fortunately we were on the way to his hospitalization or he would have taken that frog home as a pet. I let him play with it for a little bit before he took it back to the pond and let it go. He had several critter tanks on a shelf in his room and I had no desire to add another one. We took him to see Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, and Crazy Horse on the way to one of his treatments. I guess I was successful in making the trips fun for him because when he was finally pronounced in full remission he was very excited that it was over until he realized he didn’t need to go back to Mayo again. Then he was really bummed. Everything else on my list is on the western half of the country.

I’m going to say 5. I went past the Statue of Liberty on a cruise ship and drove by the Liberty Bell so I won’t count them. I obviously haven’t traveled much.

9 I don't even know what Hana is or where Ft Sumter is. I def plan on seeing Niagara Falls, Zion, Yellowstone, and maybe the Statue of Liberty some day. Also The Everglades--I was very close in January but didn't actually visit.
I don't care at all about South Beach. Plenty of other areas in Florida I'd rather visit. Can skip the French Quarter and the Arch (I've driven past it, close enough) as well. This is kind of an odd list to me, pretty random.
I love parks and how many different kinds of nature and ecosystems there are in this huge beautiful country.

I'd have a lot of samples by now!

17 maybe 18. But I would be hesitant to include the 18th on my list even if I had actually been there as I obviously have almost no memory of it.

26. I’ve never heard of The Road to Hana, but Hawaii is one of two states that I’ve never been in. I’ve seen the Space Needle, but didn’t go up so I didn’t count that one. I don’t think we ever went to South Beach and I know we didn’t do St Augustine. We’ve spent very little time in Florida.

Lexica ~~ Be careful about soil samples and more so, sand. It is illegal in some places to remove any form of vegetation, dirt & sand. Apparently in some places, taking shells is also verboten. Something verboten is forbidden. It isn't allowed or permitted. If this word looks and sounds odd, that's because it comes straight to English from German. The concept is simple: anything verboten is forbidden to do or say.

I def plan on seeing Niagara Falls Please let me know as I live close by. It would be fun to have a pea meet-up (& I'll have some Canadian butter & maple syrup for you). My neighbour (from where I grew up) has a commercial maple syrup business & I get my maple syrup from them. I used to help their parents when I was young in making maple sugar candies and working at their farm market. I have several different friends who own wineries. Butter, maple syrup and wine ~ could life be better than this?
