I will often have a silly amount of potatoes on hand. There's only 2 of us and we don't even eat potatoes more than a couple of times a week but I have a dread of running out for some reason. I freeze my potatoes. Bake them, cut them up, freeze and bag. Also I freeze mashed potatoes.

Thought of one other one. We live in a fairly standard mid-west American subdivision. With a standard 2 car garage connected to a 6 car garage that is a loft with a car lift in it. My DH loves it so much, so do our family and friends. No one has paid for an oil change (beyond the oil) since we moved here 4 years ago. Several riding lawn mowers have been fixed with it too. Definitely not a setup that’s expected in a subdivision

I love this! I love color. Every once in awhile I go to Goodwill and browse the mugs for random bright colors. If I bring some home I donate (usually to my Buy Nothing group) some mugs from the cupboard. I'd love to see a photo of your rainbow stairs! Ask & ye shall receive. ^.^ Also, Pongu Pongu Stark who was climbing the stairs for the first time. ETA: this was prior to finishing the landing & caulking the steps properly. Don't tell DH I posted an unfinished photo of his work. I love this so much!

DH has a whole ROOM of Lego We also have a upstairs hall closet that is the game and puzzle closet and our two guest rooms double as libraries - one fiction, one non-fiction Our upstairs loft area is our Lego room. There is a long desk to build, storage area and display shelves. My bedroom has 2 walk in closets that are huge. My husband and I share one, the other is for board games, puzzles and all the kids books. Our new thing is fish tanks, started off with 1, then another for baby fish. Then another for the babies that grew up, then one I set up today for a new Betta

If you go through the drawers in any of the furniture in my house, (dressers, night stands, sofa table, etc…) you will find one or more, empty drawers in each of them.
After my Mom passed away and my stepdad had to go into memory care we had to clean out her house. Every drawer, shelf, closet and under the beds was completely full of stuff. Nothing organized, just stuffed full of stuff. There was so much junk that should have just been tossed or recycled (15 old cell phones…. Really??? Ugh!)
I promised my kids I would never leave a mess like that for them when I go, so when we got home I cleaned out our house and made sure that at least one drawer was empty.
I found several partially used boxes of Christmas cards and stationary from years ago (before we started doing photo cards) in a drawer. I decided no photo cards again until those old cards are completely gone. I’m starting to use the stationary for grocery lists and whatever other notes I need to write. Once that’s gone I’ll have another empty drawer in an antique dresser.

Now it's a living room again. 😁

I have an insane number of coffee mugs from my favorite places and experiences. I wake up, pour my coffee and I'm reminded of the best times of my life. It's a great way to start the day. This is only the coffee mugs. Tea mugs are in another cabinet.I have over 400 tubes of high quality watercolor paint and quite a stash of craft supplies. When I die, my kids should fight over my paint, not my jewelry. My best friend died and left me her art supplies. She was a wonderful artist and had a huge stash of paint and supplies. When I brought her stuff home, I couldn't have gotten one more paintbrush in my car. I donated some and organized the rest and set up a studio in my garage. Then I painted to assuage the grief and continued to add to my stash. I still paint almost every day. My house is full of "Asian $#*t" as my daughter calls it. We collected a lot of furniture, rugs, art, and stuff while we lived overseas. It's too much but I love it.

We have a "secret" room. The door looks like a large picture frame, opens with a magnet held against the latch.
It was DS's wish at age 7 or 8 to have one when we were finishing the basement. It would have been the best spot for hide and seek, but he loved it so much that he showed everyone as soon as they came over!

In my home.....no one has eat anything they don't like, nor does anyone "have to" try a bite of anything, if they don't want to. For whatever the reason. I'm in a studio, so my scrapbook area is on display in all it's glory. I have more than some and less than others. Non scrapbookers or crafters, might think it's "a lot"....but compared to some of the scrapbook rooms and areas I've seen online, mine is minimal. Same here.
I didn't know it was really a rule in others' homes.
Growing up, we ate what was there, because otherwise you'd go hungry. And so now I'm the kind of shopper that buys more pickles because we're down to our last two jars. All that to say we always have a alternative, even if it's just PB&J.

What used to be the formal dining room is now the home for about 25 assorted guitars and basses, plus amps, mics, and other similar items. The adjacent home office is my teaching studio and that's where we have the piano, two more guitars, and a ukulele. One of our spare bedrooms is DH's hobby room, where he paints historical miniatures to use for war games. It's packed to the gills with figures, paints, brushes, books on historical military uniforms, and I don't know what all. Our garage is home to tens of thousands of painted miniatures all neatly boxed and categorized. When DH goes to game, he just pulls out the boxes he needs for the battle being planned. Our little rescue dog refuses to potty outside, so we have a stack of washable/reusable puppy pads in the corner of the family room. One is always out for her to go on. Her poo gets picked up and flushed and we put down a clean pad at least once a day. My kids would say what is different in our house is that we rarely have food, just "ingredients." What they mean is that we don't often buy the pre-prepared foods or snacks they see at their friends' houses.
We're pretty weird, I think. We will almost certainly have to move out of this house and have it staged as a proper house when it comes time to sell it. LOL, my kids called our house an "Ingredient Household" and I thought they made that up. LOL.
I buy some things that are premade, but mostly have ingredients to cook with.

High-fiving all the peas with instruments all over the house! In my line of sight is a piano, 3 guitars (good grief!), two violins, a ukulele... I think that's it. There are some soprano and alto recorders in the piano bench. That's not counting everything that's NOT in my line of sight: at least 3 more guitars, a U-bass, some flutes and clarinets, and a whole electronic music setup with synthesizers, keyboards, etc. And don't get me started on the mics, amps, and stands. Or the handheld percussion... Oy. I didn't even think of that as weird, though. What's weird is that my tiny dog has a bed in every room in the house save the kitchen and the kids' room (she thinks DD's bed belongs to her, though! LOL). She actually has TWO in our bedroom. What's also weird is that I have a 12-pack of toilet paper in the closet that May Not Be Used unless there is a Most Dire Emergency. Covid damaged me in odd ways!Same here. I've always been a strange duck, but I've definitely gotten more food hoard-y since Covid.

We have bath mats on the 2 new chairs…because cats. If we know someone is coming we will remove them but if you just show up you’ll see them keeping fur off the seat cushions. We have Cat tape. It's a special tape that doesn't damage the furniture, but keeps the cats from scratching it. If you surf Amazon you'll see it.

We have a CPR dummy in the den. DD borrowed it for a school project, then the teacher said it was outdated and she could keep it. Since DD is training to be an EMT, it actually makes sense. However, where the heck to you put something like that when you aren't using it??? (We don't have a basement, garage and attic are not heatproofed, and we have minimal closets, so...George is just lying on the floor for now.)

I thought of another thing that's normal here---we welcome wildlife into our yard. Now, we do nothing to purposely bring them in. Not even a bird feeder. But we also do nothing to chase them off. So many times we'll tell someone about the woodchucks or the deer or the rabbits and they'll start giving us hints on how to get rid of them. Or people will say "OH, they'll eat all of your plants/bulbs/etc." We have more plants than we want right now, and so they're happy to eat as much of them as they like.

My husband and I have our own rooms. We married when we were almost 40 and have very different sleep habits so we have always had separate rooms. I tell people it has saved our marriage. His mom was mortified at first but now she gets it.

They have one of their guest bedrooms that tends to be full of various stuff unless they actually have a guest coming, then they divvy it up into all different closets. It's not something I'd like to do, but it makes them feel better and it's not a whole lot of one thing---they may have a 12 pack of TP, but not 20 of those 12 packs. But along with the 12 pack of t.p., they have a 12 pack of paper towels, and a 12 pack of tissues, and an extra bag or two of dog food, and those are large things to store. So day to day they just live in the one bedroom.

There were riots that permanently closed down some of our stores, especially pharmacies, and made some stores close for several weeks or months. The stress I encountered then was learned from, and that's why I keep some extras on hand.

This is the most fun thread I've seen in a long time! Thanks, everyone, for sharing!
I only have one small contribution to add. Two of our adult granddaughters (sisters) are fans of an online shopping site called Linda Finegold. The 'motto', I guess you'd call it, is "Assholes Live Forever" and it's prominently displayed on all their merchandise - hoodies, t-shirts, backpacks, ball caps, etc. The girls wear this stuff a lot but this 77-year-old Grama refuses. In their defense, the quality of the clothing is actually very good.
They had a small black heart-shaped pillow that had been part of a 'mystery bag' full of stuff for a really good price and brought it over to give to their Grampa (DH). He uses it behind his neck in his big recliner when he watches TV. As if it's not bad enough that one side says "Assholes Live Forever', the other side of the pillow says "Play with my dick, not my heart". I hide that stupid thing when we have company.
Edited again to add - This is a very rude and provocative website. For those who are easily offended, stay away. I am shocked by some of the garments. Luckily, my girls have never purchased anything worse than the ALF signage.

Well 2020 we realized that no one was coming for Thanksgiving. So we left him at the table, gave him a plate, took pics and made jokes online about our dinner guest. Then it was Christmas cookie baking day. And instead of the big family gathering I had to bake my cookies alone. So I brought him back out as my "helper" complete with an apron and all. He's been in my dining room ever since. We just move him around as needed. But he's a permanent fixture now. The people who know us honestly think nothing of it. I still periodically make jokes using Mr. Bones. My cleaning lady moves him around too. Just a couple of weeks ago I posted this on Facebook:
