Biden will not be replaced at this point. Quit talking about it. All of you are falling into the crappy media's perspective. Build up what Biden has done and will do. Build up the new younger team in 2028. There won't be any discussion of Biden or dump then.

Absolutely not. Whilst his performance in the debate was not good, his performance as President has been. And IF something was to happen to him, he has good support. His record should stand for more than one debate performance. Let's face it. Trump is old also and his performance was not good either. Everything he said was a lie and he gave no information in regards to policies.

I haven't read the replies, and probably won't since I don't usually even open political threads. But for some reason I couldn't help it on this one. My question is why should we -- "we" meaning general "we", i.e., anyone in the USA -- equate a poor showing on one debate with being a bad president? Yes it seems he had a bad debate (although I can't imagine the Orange One was any better, except that his followers are stupid sheep and don't care what he says or how he says it). But that doesn't mean he is or will be a bad president. Yes, he's too old, in my opinion. And yes of course he's 100% a better choice than trump. I don't understand why we just jump immediately to "replace him" after one debate.

We can keep our old dude because we have a plan in place if something were to happen to him - Kamala Harris This is not a great plan. Harris, for many, is the reason to vote for Trump, even if they hate Trump. I fully believe Biden will not make it long, and his VP will be who we are voting for. I wish Pete B was his VP!

And how would it go over if you replace Joe but skip over Kamala Harris for someone else? You don’t see potential problems with that? One thing that I do when people tell me that they don’t like Kamala is ask them why. They usually don’t know why. They just don’t like her. Someone said she’d just be bad with nothing to back it up.

She’s a black woman who doesn’t “know her place” so they have an instinctive dislike of her, though they generally cannot name a single policy position she holds that they object to.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. And frankly it pisses me off that it is even being suggested and discussed. I wish the news would stop pushing this damn agenda and start focusing on the nightmare that is Donald Trump. How in the world they can keep pushing this as news and having discussions about it but say NOTHING about Trump and his felony CONVICTIONS is maddening to me. I have stayed off of the debate thread because all the histrionics and hand wringing was making me angry. It should not even be a discussion. THIS X 1000! The only thing replacing President Biden as the Democratic nominee at this point in time would accomplish is to guarantee that trump is elected.

This is good news in terms of people being aware of the dangers of a second Trump presidency, I think.

No. Biden should have not run again and left it open to someone else. We are now stuck with him.

This is good news in terms of people being aware of the dangers of a second Trump presidency, I think. Not if the people Googling it, like it. Or like enough of it that they will end up in an “ends justify the means” scenario. That’s what people basically admit to liking about Trump. He says what he wants without consequences, he wants to punish certain groups of people, he’s a tough guy that other people are scared of. What we need to really understand is enough of our neighbors and fellow citizens *want* this. If they were going to be horrified by things like this, they would already be based on everything else.

The Economist: Leader - "Joe Biden should now give way to an alternative candidate"
New York Times Editorial Board - "To Serve his Country, Biden should now leave the race"

This, right here. Yep, it's despicable. But I also fear that this critical election will be decided by "vibes," facts and previous records be damned. While we might be closely following the facts, specifically what candidates say and do, so much of the general public is going on vibes, memes, and social media posts. We can talk ourselves blue in the face trying to win over people with facts. Sadly, most of the people who support Trump or are undecided don't really care. It's all just vibes to them.

No. The time to have discussions about replacing him, would have been a year ago. Not 5 months before the election. So he had a bad showing at the debate. He still ran circles around orange lumpman. He should be fine. He has a great team beside him.

Right. The NYT has never helped Trump by publishing endless negative articles about Hillary’s emails or questioning Biden’s age, while burying stories about Trump’s crimes on page 13. Liberals are dumping their subscriptions in droves. That editorial board is the worst kind of wolf in a whole herd of sheep’s clothing.

Have either of those journals called for trump to leave the race or give way to an alternative candidate? I don't think so. So I'm not about to listen to them now.

no. too late to find someone and raiser a billion dollars to finance new candidate's campaign. lots of possibilities but none that are nationally known or are not too polarizing within the party.

Absolutely, he should step down. We have only a few weeks to fix the mess he created by insisting on running again. His reasoning seemed to be that he was the only one who could beat Trump. Never going to happen. He was losing in the polls - especially in swing states - before the debate. The situation will only get worse as Republicans have all that footage from the debate to run over and over between the convention and election day... and they will.
Does anyone really believe that Biden has another 4 1/2 years in him? He accomplished his mission of getting us past Covid plus a great deal of his agenda. He needs to retire with dignity. I can't believe anyone close to him wants to see him disintegrate in public. To think he will bounce back and never have a repeat of Thursday evening in public is a fantasy. I've been around enough 80 something year old men to know the minefield of problems they have to navigate.
We have an opportunity to find a candidate that undecided voters can embrace. So far, many voters don't like either Trump or Biden. They want change. Voters always want change and the democratic party can give it to them. The NYTimes outlined a process for doing this that I believe will work. I think it should be one of the governors of a swing state, possibly with Harris still as VP.

FDR didn't even make it 3 months into his 4th term, before he died. Something the party had prepared for by replacing his VP for the 4th term with Harry Truman, because his previous VP (Henry Wallace) was not viewed as an adequate successor.

So, genuinely curious then, where do you get your national and international news from? Where do you find truly unbiased political coverage? Serious question... The Economist has published countless articles and features detailing exactly what devastating effects Trump's re-election would have on our nation and the entire world. They have been sounding the alarm bell for a very long time.

As I said elsewhere, just SAY you are okay with a 2nd term for Donald Trump, his team, and all that it implies. Or give a specific name who is a viable replacement. Biden isn't acceptable. Now VP Harris is unacceptable. We will be doing this all day. Pete Buttigieg will be unacceptable (gay, his tenure as Transportation Secretary hasn't made waves as being media splashingly successful - although it is probably more effective in quiet ways), Gov. Newsom is too easy of a target to the Trump MAGA campaign style, Gov. Whitmer (woman, unknown in states that are necessary like AZ and GA), Gov Pritzker (too billionaire), others are too brown, have ovaries, too woke to WIN OVER the undecideds who by still being undecided are giving implicit approval to a 2nd Trump term.

I'm not at all okay with a Trump 2nd term which is exactly why Biden must be replaced. As I said, a governor of a swing state would be far better than Biden at this point - Whitmer or Shapiro. Yes, there are problems with every candidate, but we can win with a younger, energetic moderate Democrat. We can not win with the current ticket. Leaving Biden on the ticket is what is saying Yes to a Trump 2nd term.

The Economist has published countless articles and features detailing exactly what devastating effects Trump's re-election would have on our nation and the entire world. They have been sounding the alarm bell for a very long time. It's not generally a matter of the veracity of NYT's articles. It's the editorial choices about frequency and positioning of coverage, which has seemed very tilted against Democratic candidates for years now. I have to ask myself why the Economist has called for Biden to step down because of one bad night, when they have never done so for all the rallies where Trump has rambled incoherently, all the times his advisors have been convicted of crimes performed in his service, the insurrection he instigated and directed, or the 34 felonies for which he was convicted. How much credibility can they really have in asking Biden to step down in that case? My point in all of that is that it's not Dems sounding the alarm. It was initially some media of questionable intent, and MAGA jumped right up to amplify their message and make scary-sounding claims like this one: x.com/Alyssafarah/status/1807392958779375946This woman is a MAGA operative and the daughter of the World Net Daily conspiracy rag founder/owner. The likelihood that she even has "numerous friends who are lifelong Democrats" is vanishingly small, particularly in the wake of the 2016 election. And it's people like her who are sounding the "alarm" about voters jumping ship. Don't drink the Koolaid.
