If you wake up in the middle of the night hungry do you get up and eat something? This came from a discussion I was having in a FB group about what our brains think of when we can't get back to sleep at night. There was the usual long list of all the worries that our brains dredge up at 2:00 a.m. , then one person said she lies there thinking of food because she's hungry, then she gets up to eat. This was a funny coincidence because last night when I woke up (3:00 a.m. this time) I was hungry, which does happen to me occasionally. But there is no way in heck that I'm dragging myself out of bed and into the kitchen to find something to eat in the middle of the night. It has just never occurred to me to do that. It would add more calories to my day (I'm trying to lose weight), then I'd have to go brush my teeth, and then I'd be wide awake. I'd rather read and hope that puts me back to sleep.

it depends - if I wake up in the middle of the night (or if my kitty (Dusty) insists on me waking up) - I test my blood sugar and that decides if I eat or not.
Dusty is pretty good at making me wake up when my blood sugar is low so typically I do end up eating the nights he wakes me up and less likely on the nights I wake up on my own.

I would have to be very hungry to actually get up just to eat. I have to be very anything to actually get up out of bed I the middle of the night. I'll ignore most minor annoyances and hope for the best. I only get up when the minor annoyances refuse to shut up and start screaming at me. You know---I'm extremely hot or cold, I'm going to burst if I don't go use the bathroom , I can barely lie down for how bad my allergies or headache or whatever might be---that kind of thing.

I have a friend who keeps snacks in her beside table drawer for just this reason! She’s great to room with on a getaway, there are always snacks!

I usually wake up a few times a night to go to the bathroom and I try to stay as sleepy as possible to be able to go back to sleep. I rarely wake up other than that so I'm not really a middle-of-the-night eater but if I did on the off chance, I'd probably have some cheese and hope to go back to sleep!

No. Can’t remember the last time I ate in the middle of the night.

I cant remember ever waking up from hunger. But, it would have to be stomach grumbling hunger to get me out of bed. I would worry it would just trick my body into thinking it was morning. I don’t have any blood sugar issues to manage though.

No. If I wake up to use the restroom or something wakes me up I drink iced water then get comfy and back to sleep.

I remember once when I was pregnant I woke up starving, so I got up and had a bowl of cereal and went right back to sleep. If was to wake up around 4-6 am I might feel a bit hungry but not enough to get up and eat. If you are consistantly waking up hungry maybe you need a snack before bed, something with protein.

If I wake up and just can't fall back asleep I will get out of bed and sometimes have a snack if I feel hungry.

Never. I’d get an acid stomach instead of falling asleep.

Once I'm down for the night, I'm down. And I'm a pretty champion sleeper - no real issues. I don't even get up to go to the bathroom during the night.
I really can't imagine a scenario (barring medical need) that I would get up to eat in the middle of the night. I'm not even a snacker. I don't eat anything else past dinner at night just by habit.

No, I’ve never woken up being that hungry. I’ve gone to bed slightly hungry. I have GERD. I can’t eat too close to lying down. I’ve even tried to ignore the urge to pee in the middle of the night. But, sometimes you just need to go. lol! But no, if I am going to go back to sleep, I will not eat in the middle of the night.

Yes. But my hunger is usually (unfortunately, lol) for a snack so I allow myself to have one cookie.

I've only done that once in my life and it was the night after we got married. I was so busy and had so much fun at the reception that I barely ate. I woke up at 2 or 3 am starving and fortunately there was a fruit gift basket in the honeymoon suite. I ate half of it.

Gerd is why I have a bag of goldfish crackers by my bed, to be able to put something in my stomach. So 5 crackers ..

I don’t think I ever have done that-I can’t imagine a time I would do that unless there was a medical need. But that’s probably because I have never really woken up hungry! lol

Nope. I don't even like to eat late at night before bed. If I try to digest food while I sleep, best-case scenario is I don't wake up refreshed. Worst-case is I get reflux. No thanks.

Am I the only one who doesn't wake up in the night? I just can't even imagine this scenario. Maybe 3 times a month I wake up to pee. And I might wake up screaming or something if one of my very vivid dreams goes awry. But I just don't wake up.

It depends. I do my HB egg test. If I can picture myself getting up and eating a hardboiled egg, I know I am actually hungry and I get up and eat. If I am looking for a bowl of cereal, I try to NOT go downstairs because I know I am not actually hungry and just being snack-ish.

I have never woken up hungry. I do frequently wake up, if my thoughts start spinning I put on my sleep head band with speakers and turn on a podcast with the sleep timer. I'm usually out again quickly, but many times will wake up again in hour or so.

I've never woken up at night and been hungry. I guess my body is trained to not eat between 6PM and 7AM.
My dad always ate a bowl of cereal before going to bed. It seems so strange now but he would always ask us if we wanted some cereal although we said no thanks all of our lives. Sweet memories of my dad. I sure miss him.
ETA: I do wake up 2-3 times to pee and drink water each time.

DH wakes in the night if he has a low blood sugar event. Of course that means he needs some food.

If being hungry is what wakes me up, it means I’m actually hungry and need to eat something. I usually will look for a pack of Ritz crackers and will eat 4-5 of those plain which is enough to take the edge off so I can go back to sleep. If I’m waking up to pee or get a drink, I just do that and go right back to bed.
