I absolutely loved the whole thing! There were a few head scratching moments but I was enchanted and enthralled by each new performance. Now I want to go to Paris ASAP.

Agree, but the organizers had to know how it would be generally interpreted. A different topic ... I saw this... "LA’s bid included plans to split its opening ceremony between Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — also a host in 1932 and 1984 — and SoFi Stadium. Those plans could change in the next four years, though." Oh please, no! Make it all at the Coliseum, please!! The only people I am seeing who interpreted the Bacchanalia as the Last Supper and the horse as the Pale Horse of death are Americans. No one in Europe interpreted it that way. Now, some of that may be down to our commentary telling us more about what was going on, but some is down to a different understanding of history, mythology and religion. Actually the criticism has been much wider spread than just in America. Both Italian and French officials have posted rebukes. It also does not seem as though the Olympic committee is saying it wasn't meant to the Last Supper www.reuters.com/sports/olympics/paris-ceremony-last-supper-parody-sparks-controversy-2024-07-27/ ETA - Catholic reaction : www.ncregister.com/cna/world-response-to-mockery-of-christianity-at-paris-olympics

Conclusion: The Opening Ceremony was too avant guarde for the common folk and went over our heads.

Protestant Christian here and my denomination has never spent much time on the book of Revelation, so the horse never entered my mind as being death or anything but a very neat mechanical horse. We spent time admiring how they had the movement of the horses feet while running as very realistic. I also never connected the table as being the Last Supper painting.

So worldwide, Christians tend to think they're being persecuted when they're not. That tracks.

I have watched and I don’t get it. The threesone thing was odd and yes there were some drag queens but I just don’t get it. I was looking for the last supper and I watched that part but didn’t see that. Overall I have really enjoyed this.

I have seen some saying that they weren’t depicting the last supper, but then have also seen people talking about interviews with the drag queens who said it was portraying the last supper, and there have been acknowledgment and apologies for being offensive. IMO, they should just be honest instead of adding to the divisive nature of comments on social media. I also don’t consider myself to be religious but I do real hate when there are different standards for different religions. People say pretty negative things about Christians and nothing is said about it but if the same things were said about Jews, Muslims or anyone else there would be a huge backlash. There can’t be double standards.

The show's designer was very clear in an interview even before this all broke that they were depicting a Dutch painting of a Bacchanal, but even had they intended the last supper - the depiction they're supposedly imitating is an imaginary one of a white Jesus created by DaVinci. There is nothing in the bible suggesting that all the apostles sat at one long table with Jesus in the middle in the manner shown.
People are upset over nothing. They might as well be upset over the sports imitate art Twitter account.

When I look at the photos of their depiction, it looks much more like a rendition of the last supper than what I find when I look up “painting of Bacchanal.” Perhaps they were trying to combine the two or something, but IMO it was in poor taste and I don’t think anyone would even dare do that to an important symbol of any other religion. That is where my irritation lies.

I understand your irritation about using Christian symbols, but I think in this case, France, which is a Christian nation, was making a parody of itself and it's history (this is just my view and interpretation of the ceremonies). They had to know it would upset a lot of people. You can criticize yourself, but no else can. Sort of what you see in comedy - making ethnic jokes about the ethnicity you belong to are "ok", but someone from the outside can't do the same thing. Just curious if anyone has come across anything about how the French people viewed the scenes from the opening ceremony?

I’ve seen some comment that what was depicted was more of a “how we wish we were vs how we really are” in regards to inclusivity. I’ve also seen that some Christians in France also thought the “last supper/not last supper” was offensive. But I’m sure there are others who loved it.

Oh and we all universally could not understand what was going with the can can. It was TERRIBLE. Could they not hear the music? Did they find random people off the street to throw pink dresses on - it was truly cringe worthy. I have a conspiracy theory. I heard they moved their homeless people out of town for the Olympics. Maybe they gave some of them the option of staying if they did the can-can in pink tutus. Just a theory.

They couldn't hear the music, it was slippery because of the rain, and some of the original dancers were on strike and these were replacements. I read that Lady Gaga also had issues with the sound.

The opening ceremony tableau va the painting referenced. Greek god symbolism makes a lot more sense for the Olympics than Christian symbolism.

I mean the Gospel of St John talks about Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles, and that certainly wasn’t depicted in the Opening Ceremony; and references in other Books of the Bible mention Jesus handing bread out, and that also didn’t seem to be in the Opening Ceremony. I guess I’m just wondering what it was about the Opening Ceremony scene that makes it appear to depict the last meal that Jesus shared with the Apostles?

I find it incredibly hypocritical of all these "Christians" loosing their shit over what they think is a mockery of the Last Supper. The only reason they are loosing their shit is because it was a bunch of drag performers doing it. Because I've never heard any backlash over these other genres doing a version of the Last Supper: I'm guessing it's because billions of people were watching the opening ceremonies on a world stage, whereas the other examples shown here were seen by much smaller audiences. I personally haven't seen any of these versions of the Last Supper before, and it's likely the Catholic authorities that have spoken out about the Olympic version haven't seen them either.

It's the drag queens. By all means, have mobsters or cartoon characters imitate a sacred symbol of Christianity, the Last Supper, but don't dare include drag queens or it's a sin before God and all that's holy, or so say the people who believe "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." That said, the organizers haven't disavowed the symbolism but they've said that the event was not meant to “be subversive, or shock people, or mock people.” But it did and that's not the Olympic spirit. I think they're having quite a chuckle over what they put over on us. "Who us? Irreverent? Mais non!!!"

Surely you have seen the last supper picture in plenty of religious people’s houses, right? Does it matter if it is an exact replica as explained in the Bible (or not) of what Jesus experienced? It is a representation of that event, which is important to many. As an attempt at “art” or “bringing people together” I think that part of the opening ceremony was a fail. catholicherald.co.uk/drag-queen-confirms-it-was-a-parody-of-last-supper/

I guess our differences is what makes the world go around.
I hated it. Did they even practice? What in the world was Lady Gaga even doing? Was she a quail?
I much prefer the parade of nations in a coliseum.
A drag queen fashion show? How is that even remotely about the Olympics?
The two things I did love was the oldest Olympian with the torch though I thought someone should have wheeled him up the ramp and let him light the cauldron. and Celine Dion, who I am not that much of a fan but I thought she did a great job.

There was a lot of chatter around me when it was on, but it's my understanding that nobody could actually practice and then the rain meant they had to make a lot of game time decisions. I loved those feathery things though, they were very fun. I mean, it's no meat suit.. A drag queen fashion show? How is that even remotely about the Olympics? I think of fashion when I think of Paris. So, it's not just "hey, Olympics", it's also "Viva la France". The two things I did love was the oldest Olympian with the torch though I thought someone should have wheeled him up the ramp and let him light the cauldron. I was so worried he was going to drop that torch. I thought it was all well done and fun.

I watched a few minutes. We were on vacation and it was on the TV when we were eating lunch out. I liked the sparkly Eiffel Tower.
DH paid for some channel ($15) and we've been enjoying watching all the stuff that never gets put on NBC regular TV (with no commercials, and non-US announcers and non US teams) and it is fabulous. We watched rugby, handball, soccer, and surfing yesterday.
