I haven't seen a thread about the possible upcoming shipping port strike. Are others following it and concerned or just me? Both sides seem to be really far apart -- they can't even agree on how willing the other side is to negotiate and I've just seen where the Biden admin is getting involved now. Whats everyone thinking? Will a strike happen or will they come to an agreement just in the nick of time? From an article that I'll link: According to the union, a strike would affect ports from Maine to Texas. A stoppage could involve up to 45,000 workers at ports that account for roughly 60% of U.S. shipping traffic, leading to a major disruption of shipments, Oxford Economics said in a report. "Even a two-week strike could disrupt supply chains until 2025," Grace Zwemmer, associate U.S. economist with Oxford, said in the report. www.cbsnews.com/news/port-officials-ready-for-first-strike-by-dockworkers-in-decades/----------------- I think an agreement will come just in the nick of time. The Biden Administration does not need this to happen before the election, so I think they will do everything to get to an agreement.

Hope they can reach an agreement. The last thing we need is for prices to increase again!

Also important is that TFG not get involved, he is truly anti-America!!
Are they Teamsters?

I would be worried if Port of LA and Long Beach were looking to strike, though NY a d Georgia get a lot too.
LA/Long Beach had a stroke in 2023 and got a good contract. It was closed 24 hours.
Hopefully the teamsters can work their magic and keep things open.

I looked up what could be sitting and it seems mainly electronics, some cars, little food (alcohol, sugar, cocoa, cherries), copper, cotton, tin, wood, and base metals.
I also read that retailers are already over buying due to holidays and have about 70% stock. They have also prepared for this as well.
Biggest concern would be increase in prices.
We do export a lot of eggs and poultry in those ports so wonder how that will effect our prices.

And while our TP is made here in the US, the pulp is from Canada and another country. My Costco has quite a large section, more than normal when I was there today.
Thankfully no one was over buying.
Carts seemed like normal trips.
I also read it could go 5 days with hope it makes there.

Biden has also said he doesn't want to get involved and or use the Taft Hartley Act. He believes in bargaining with Unions.
We will see what he says or does it is goes over a week or 2.

NJ Gov just tweeted that the strike is happening. I really hope this doesn’t last long. Supply chains still seem strained and this close to the election and the holidays is really bad. They aren’t helping themselves as it could help TFG and he is against unions and overtime.

I hope the strike doesn’t last long if there is one too. The company I work for exports a lot of lumber. This will affect all our shipments to Europe. The shipments going to China will be ok though because they go out through the ports on the west coast.

Nearly 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) are on strike Tuesday against the nation’s East and Gulf Coast ports, according to the Associated Press, choking off the flow of many of the nation’s imports and exports in what could become America’s most disruptive work stoppage in decades.
The AP reported that dockworkers began walking picket lines shortly after the contract expired at midnight, indicating that there was no apparent deal. There appears to be a wide gap between the union’s demands and the offer of the United States Maritime Alliance, which uses the acronym USMX. The maritime alliance represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign owned; as well as terminal operators and port authorities.
Dole bananas at a grocery store. America's most popular fruit could be in shorter supply if longshore workers at East and Gulf coast ports go on strike early Tuesday. Related article Expect shortages of bananas, booze, chocolate and cherries if there’s a long port strike
The strike will stop the flow of a wide variety of goods over the docks of almost all cargo ports from Maine to Texas. This includes everything from bananas to European beer, wine and liquor, along with furniture, clothing, household goods and European autos, as well as parts needed to keep US factories operating and American workers in those plants on the job. It could also stop US exports now flowing through those ports, hurting sales for American companies.
Depending on the length of the strike, it could result in shortages of consumer and industrial goods, which could then lead to price hikes. It could also mark a setback to the economy, which has shown signs of recovery from pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions that resulted in a spike in inflation.

I just saw that the strike was happening on the Today show this morning. I hadn't heard much about it before today but it sounds like it could be catastrophic.

Will also affect oil import/export and a lot of other things because Houston is affected. For those who don't know, Houston is the US's busiest port in terms of tonnage moved each year. It's in the top 5 for container imports, which would be most consumer goods.
I support the strikers. One of their demands is ceasing the use of automated labor to replace them, which seems quite reasonable to me. At the moment, I'm saving my ire for hoarders who go in and buy way more of something than they can reasonably use. People only think about themselves in these situations and it's gross.
I agree that the impetus for having the strike *now* is likely political, though I'm unsure of the machinations behind it. It's my hope that the Biden admin will find a way to bring both parties to an agreement and end it quickly, which would both douse the hopes of anyone who wanted this to be an October surprise AND be a positive campaigning point for Harris.

I just saw something that it’s not just pay but automation. They want to automate like the UK ports. If so automation doesn’t go on strike. Of course they are going to want to automate as much as they can.
If TFG is involved in this that is just a crazy new blow. I wouldn’t put it past him as he wanted a government shut down snd that didn’t happen but time will tell. I know Biden has said he will stay out of it but this is just so large and will affect so many people at this critical time. Would it make him look good to solve this? Or bad because he steps in. Do people expect him to step in?
