What was your very first car? I was talking with three neighbors a few days ago and one neighbor mentioned his very first car was a Volkswagen Bug. I said me too! It turned out that all four of us drove a Volkswagen as our first car. Three of us bought a used Bug and one had the Volkswagen van.
What was your first car?

A 1981 Mercury Lynx.
ETA: That was the first car my dad fixed up for me when I turned 16 in 1989. At other points I had a Chevy Citation and a Chevy Corsica. Buying cars with issues and fixing them up was my dad's hobby, so I was lucky with that.
The first car DH and I bought after we were married and moved to Texas was a red Chevy Beretta. I was so proud of it. I drove that to work and DH drove the Corsica I still had because it had no A/C and his commute was about 10 minutes vs. my 40 minutes commute.

I drove my mum's cars and my boyfriends cars throughout my teens and 20's because I was a broke student! After I got my first teaching job I bought a truck! A black Ford F150 ... loved it! I actually drove F150's for years after that I live in Alberta where every other vehicle is a truck! Now I drive a Jeep Wrangler.

I just looked up what my first little bug would sell for today. I am shocked. I can’t recall what I paid for it way back when I bought it, I am guessing maybe around $2,500? Now they average $24,000 and some up to $58,000! I guess I should have kept it.

1989 Toyota Camry. It was fully loaded too. Even had a sunroof. Got it in 1994 half way into my Jr Year of highschool. Was my mom's and I got it when she got a new Camry. Had it till Sept 1999 when I was hit at a stop light by a big truck. Damage was more than cost so parents took the $8,000 we got for it and used that for a down on a new Honda Civic. I hated that civic but it got me around for 3 years when I traded it in for a Toyota Corolla Sport Edition.

A 1977 Chevy Nova, when I was a junior in high school in 1987. That was my older sister’s first car. She went to take some test during college that was not held at the college itself. She could not find a parking spot on their lot so she parked in the lot next door. When she came out, no car. She thought maybe it had been towed but learned it was stolen. She was in tears and the officer she talked to scolded her saying that that type of car was one of the most stolen in that area and told her she was stupid for driving it to that neighborhood. This was in Los Angeles. We were from Orange County and had no idea that her car was so popular to steal. She had just had it painted too.

I can list all my cars…I have had so few…pretty sad for an almost 60 year old. Hahaha.
74 Chevy Malibu- old used family clunker car 82 Chevette - bought used. My first “my” car. 88 Chevy Nova hatchback. My first new car I bought. I loved that car. 98 Ford Escort. New. I never really liked that car. 07 Mazda3 hatchback. New. I really loved this car. 16 Subaru Forester. New. I really liked this car but I went from my little zoom zoom zoom to a safe and practical 21 Subaru Forester. New. First time I ever got any significant trade in value for trading in my old car. 25 Subaru Forester. New. Got a great deal and now I have all the options I want and can revert to my keep for about 10 years way. 😄

I didn’t get my first car until I graduated college and was 22. It was a brand new, loaded gold Honda Accord. Leather seats, it was fly. I had some money from graduation and a full time job. I had it 2 years then it was stolen off the streets of Oakland

Surprised at the number of Pintos/Lynx...
Not my first but the first new car I bought, was a 1971 Pinto bright light green. Paid $1919 for it. I loved that car. Stick shift. I taught my DS to drive it in 1978. He totaled it, not his fault, in 1981.
First car I drove in 1958, and bought from my grandmother for $200 in 1959, was a fire engine red 1949 Buick Roadmaster. More like a boat...

1980 brick red diesel Volkswagen Rabbit. It was a manual and had those glow plugs that had to warm up for 20min to start in the cold. Yeah, that was fun in the New Jersey winter. It was 1987 and I was 23 and had just gotten my license the year before. It cost me $800.

I didn't need a car until I moved from London to a small village. Before London, my home city was small enough to walk, bike or bus everywhere.

I still have anger over my first car . A Plymouth Horizon, I was SO excited to buy my own car! BUT, it put me into so much debt! I was single, living on my own, and that damn car interfered with my finances. I actually wrote a letter to Lee Iacoca (LOL!) knowing he'd NEVER see it, but it made me feel better, I guess. I had a TINY shred of hope that they'd reimburse me for the MANY repairs due to the car being such a piece of crap.

A VW bug. Had four flat tires, a dead battery, a broken windshield and a hole in the backseat floor all the way to the ground. Took a while to fix up, but I loved that car.

*sidenote.....our parents didn't give us cars, nor were we allowed to drive theirs, so I rode with friends, took the bus/ subway/ and walked a LOT.
Went to a high school in a very high-income area, and so many of my 16-year-old classmates were gifted amazing, new, expen$ive cars for their 16th birthday.
Plus, many also had rhinoplasties (nose jobs) as TEENAGERS. Which, looking back, how SAD that parents would pay for cosmetic surgery because they wanted their SIXTEEN year old to look prettier. (sad!)

A green 1974 Chevy Vega. it was a stick shift with three gears plus reverse of course. I was a senior in college so it was 1980 and I needed a car to be able to get back-and-forth to student teaching. It cost $400 and my dad paid for it and then I paid my rent for that semester. I lived in a house with six other women, boy do I have stories.
I drove that car into the ground, but it served its purpose until I got a full-time teaching job a little over a year later.
We had always had manual cars in our family, which my dad mostly drove along with my brothers and I had never driven one. Well my dad brings this car home. We had to go get it inspected and he made me drive it. I knew the mechanics of the clutch and all that, but he looked at me and said get in it and drive lol.

1976 Toyota Corolla. Bought brand new and paid for it myself. At that time most people I knew were driving American cars; Toyotas were very inexpensive and affordable for me. I remember my friend’s dad affectionately calling it my “egg beater.”
