I used to enjoy reading the weekly threads for all the runners & walkers and wondered if anyone wanted to check in over here!
I just finished a really great 8 miles. First of all, the weather was amazing (I live in NC and the humidity can be a beast but it was just gorgeous this morning). Second, a friend asked if I would run with her and I was hesitant because I'm a solo, slowish runner that does run/walk intervals and I was afraid of slowing her down, but it turned out perfectly! Even with the intervals she hit her goal pace, I managed to keep up with her, and the conversation made the miles fly by.
How about you? What are your plans for the weekend? Anyone racing?

I'm new to the whole running thing. Have been walking 2-4 miles several times a week at a fairly quick pace. I wasn't losing any weight so I started to add in running, which is horrible because I have asthma and am 60 lbs overweight. Anyway, I live in a development of all cul de sacs. I started with partial streets, maybe 100 feet. I just did a whole mile out of the 2 miles I did. It wasn't non-stop, but that's coming. Other than feeling like my legs weigh 500 lbs and my lungs burning, all is good. I feel good that I have built up to this point, and refuse to give up. Now off to shower, I hate sweat!!!!!!

That's really great Kelbel! I think some of the hardest runs are the first ones - it's amazing how quickly your endurance increases, though!

I'm laying here peaing waiting for dh to get up. For some reason I took my Fitbit off last night and I left it laying on his side of the bed. I'm pretty dure he's laying on it Since I have not walked this week at all I refuse to walk without it Now to wake him up without him realizing it was me

I am just getting back into running after a 2 year break. I do 3 miles every night , but am still doing a walk/jog pattern, but the walking is getting shorter and shorter every night!

I ran yesterday, so today is a rest day. Being 51, alternating running and no-running days is important for my knees. I did 4.25 yesterday and plan to run 6 tomorrow.

I just had my first run after a 2 month hiatus. I just stopped running at the Princess 1/2. It felt so go to run again. I restarted couch to 5K, went 2 miles in 30 minutes. So I haven't lost much in the way of time, maybe a minute a mile.

I woke up this morning and the weather was unbelievable. Cool, sunny and no humidity! Me and my girlfriend took advantage of it and logged 7.5 miles on a new route. It was amazing. I ran a 5k yesterday and PRed so it has been a good few running days for me. I don't look forward to the heat and humidity coming back this week, though. It is so hard to get your miles in when breathing is such a chore.

I am trying to become a runner. Right now I am just a fast walker (approx. a 15 minute mile). Today was the first day that I added in short bursts of running. Hopefully it will get easier. But first I need to find a better way to carry my water and my dog's water. Can anyone recommend something like a runner's fanny pack or backpack? I need to carry two bottles of water, a small doggie bowl, and a banana. None of which is optional right now cause even at 8am it's brutal outside in FL. On the plus side I am at 30 miles mostly walked for the week.

elaine, hope your 6 miles went well today! My legs only allow me to run three times a week, so I totally understand needing days off.
missbianca, good for you for getting out there again! Sometimes a rest is exactly what we need before we can come back again.
kymberlee, congrats on your PR! I know what you mean about the humidity - it's so hard to slog through it sometimes.
mamanay, I wish I had some advice on what you could use to carry all of that, but I don't run with anything that I can't fit in my pockets. I'm sure those bursts of running will get longer & easier quickly!

Yesterday was a bust for exercise. Luckily today is a new day and tomorrow is a new week! I walked 2 miles this morning and will do another 2-3 miles this evening with dh and the dog. Tomorrow is my work from home day so I'll take my 1 hour pool exercise class and then walk a couple of miles before work After my instructor being on vacation for a week and then us being on vacation the very next week it will be great getting back on schedule!!

I just started running this year and I LOVE it! I never thought I would be able to run for miles at a time without breaks. Seriously amazing feeling. I did my first 5K this year and ran the whole thing! I bumped up my miles from 3 to 4 last week. Haven't done anything this weekend because my right leg is healing from an injury. Hoping to get back to it tomorrow.
So I just looked up fitbit - I don't have any gadgets or anything! It tracks your distance, yes? I've been trying to use google maps for that. Gah.
Also, what do you all use for water? I'm nervous to go running for very long without water. 3-4 miles tops is all I'm really comfortable with.

I don't know of anything that will carry that much stuff, unless you get a Camelback or something. I use a DaKine backpack when I mountain bike, and I LOVE it! It is way better than any camelback that I have tried. There is a runners back pack but I can't think of the brand off the top of my head. I don't think I would like anything on my back when I run. Seems way to heavy. Kelbel, I have been running consistently for 2 years and there are many times my legs feel like deadweight. It does get easier, but it is never easy. At least it isn't for me. Keep at it and don't give up, though. The first mile is always the hardest! I always tell myself when it gets hard that if it were easy, everyone would do it.

I am a walker. I have just started back after about a year and a half. I was up to 3.5 miles/5 days a week. I have a synovial cyst on my spine and I have been doing PT for a while to even get around the house. Last month, I started back walking and I am glad to say that I am up to a 1.5 miles. Nothing close to what you ladies are doing, but I am estatic!

I did the treadmill and let's just say my legs gave out on me. I went and did another 20 min or more on the bike. Maybe total of 5 miles. Nothing exciting. I went and that is good. Just didn't succeed much. Tomorrow is another workout day, right? Some days I am so string I can walk hours and speeds are great and the incline is awesome. Today no.

I'm so happy to see that I'm not the only walker in the group!
I'm old and 50 lbs over weight with bad knees, so walking is my only option.
I use a fit bit and try to walk 10,000 steps a day. It doesn't always happen, but I try my best.
This was a good week, since I averaged 4.25 mileS per day. Plus I am down 8 lbs this month. Only 42 lbs more to go. LOL

I've NEVER been a runner - in the last 2 years I've actually done a 5K and two 10K's - average a 12 minute mile, but it's a walk/run - probably 1/3 run and 2/3 fast walk. I'm 55 and have gotten the wild hare that I want to maybe try a half marathon. I'm totally afraid. Can someone tell me if there's some kind of time limit on these? My 10K was 1:15. That would mean my best is going to be 2:30 - but would probably be closer to 2:45. That sounds awful and I'm afraid of being dead last. Any input from you folks??? How horrible is that and will they come make me leave the course? I'm run/walking 3.1 miles (a 5K) 2-3 times a week before work. How long do you think it would take me to prepare - could I reasonable try one in the spring?

Cindy, all I can say is just go for it!!! I did my first half this spring and I am in the midst of training for another this fall. A half is very doable but does require training and a commitment to getting in your training miles. It is the best feeling in the world to cross that finish line! My times are pretty comparable to what you are doing. I will never win a race, but I will finish and I can promise there will always be someone slower than me. It really doesn't matter, though. Most races have a time limit, but usually it is a pretty big window to finish. I think the Nike was 4 hrs and the one I'm doing this fall is 3.5 hrs so you would just need to check the race you have chosen. For me, the bigger the race, the better. I love big, crazy races. Some people would rather do a smaller, less congested race. Chose your first half with that in mind. It isn't too late to find a fall half. Woohoo!!!!

I have completed 8 and have a goal of completing one in each state. First, every race has a different cut off, most somewhere between 3-4 hours. If you find a race you want to try just check out the FAQ section. Most races these days are walker friendly and I've had to completely walk three half marathons due to injury and I didn't come in last (although I thought for sure I was going to at a few points). If you run at all during the race you won't come in last! (And even if you do, so what? The saying is "dead last is better than didn't start!") Second, yes, I think if you picked a spring race you would have ample time to slowly & safely increase your mileage.

Cindy, your time is great! I wish I were at a 12mm. I did my first half this past Feb at Disney. The pacing requirements were a 16 minute mile. I finish in 3:26. I probably would have been a little faster but I also did the 5K and the 10K the previous 2 days. My 10K time was 1:30.
Just check the runner info on the race, they should give you pacing requirements.
As for training programs I download the Jeff Galloway programs from rundisney. I just modify the dates for what ever event I'm doing.
You won't be dead last!! Besides, our motto on the DISboards is DLF>DNF>>DNS (Dead Last Finish is better than Did Not Finish which greatly trumps Did Not Start).
So what if you are dead last. It doesn't matter if it's a 6 mm or a 16 mm, you still ran 13.1 miles!

I hadn't run a step since I was 14, and started running last September, when I decided I wanted to raise money running the Marine Corps Marathon 10K. I turned 51 in the middle of March and ran my first half marathon 2 weeks later and then ran the Pittsburgh Half at the beginning of May (my avatar). I ran it in 2:32 and feel great about my time - I wasn't anywhere close to last - there were 3558 runners who finished after me, literally. So, you will do just fine!

I want to do a 5K. I'm 50, and about 15-20 pounds overweight. I am also an asthmatic. I use map my walk. According to that I walk between 13 - 14 min mile. So proud of all of you who have accomplished runs.

Take a look at JeffGalloway's site. He has great for advice on the run-walk-run method. Don't ever feel like you need to run continuously, because YOU DON'T! And you don't want to try to run every day yet. Every other day is fine. If you push too hard too fast, you will get injured and stop running. Start with a safe plan and follow it!

For runs between 4-8 miles I use a handheld water bottle. For anything over that, I wear a fuel belt. (Unless it's a race - then I use my handheld & refill it with a mix of water/gatorade at aid stations.)
