Well, we got Austin in......Austin. Originally it was going to be a black lab, male. Then a brown lab, male. But she ended up a black lab, female. We were tired of figuring out "another" name.
Max is Max because I have always loved that name and DH didn't have any issues with it. He was a rescue and had previously been called Prince, Royale, Rebel and who knows what else.
Great thread!

One of our cats is named Medicine. She showed up out of the blue at our house about six weeks after one of our other cats had died. Medicine kept insisting she was now our cat. She ripped the screen and broke into the house, she ran inside every time we opened our door, she hung around outside the window in the rain, mewling piteously. My husband said, "IF we take her in, we should name her Socks or Boots because of her four white feet." I said I'd never saddle a cat with a lame-ass name like Boots. I'd name her Edison because she was smart enough to find a house with an opening for a cat. We figured she belonged to someone because she was too friendly and well-fed to be feral so we kept telling her, "Go home, Edison! You don't live here." Our son (who was about three at the time) thought we were saying, "Go home, Medicine." So. There you go. We have a cat named Medicine.

Our first dog was named by the shelter and we just kept it.
Our current dog we knew we were adopting but he didn't have a name. We literally read through lists of pet name ideas (like a baby name book) until we came upon one that seemed to fit.
my daughter unoriginally named her fish Gilly. Unorigional but it works. She may have been inspired by one of the actresses on Victorious, but I can't confirm that.

From the oldest to the newest acquired or whelped . . . Gunar was my husband's German Shepherd and was a name he would have used for a son . . . just found that out a few weeks ago (I have a step-daughter named Grace & I asked what it would have been for a boy ) Sable Hannah von Holtzberg is our first female GSD, Sable for her color and it had a regal sound. All of our current GSDs are registered AKC dogs so they have kennel names (like last names). Chargin' Charlie vom haus Kohl is our male GSD, came with the name! Athena Contessa vom Kaskadenberge is my girl, and she is a little loving goddess, hence the name Athena. She is also very powerful and that fits too! Current puppies not sold yet are Rough and Tough . . . cause they are! DH says they are evil twins and share a brain! Had an ancient cat who passed last summer, he was Peach because of his color and was named by DSD when she was 4. Kiwi is the new farm kitty, and we decided to stay with the fruit theme, and the color of her eyes are kiwi green! The chickens don't have names . . . but the 2 ducks do, Petri named after another pet duck that DSD knew in 5th grade and Virginia from the movie John Carter (Jump Virginia Jump). It is a hodge podge around here!

I was determined our next cats would be called Trevor and Dave but when two ginger, spitting, hissing bundles of feral fur arrived in a carrier they just didn't look like Trevor and Dave so after much deliberation they became Archie and Alfie. Alfie sadly was run over outside the house when he was about six months old. Kittens had been born to a friends cat and, unknown to me, DH arranged for them to bring a kitten with them when they came to spend a week with us. Gerald had been named by our friend's children but I didn't like the name and was pretty sure he was a she. We had just had our Ruby wedding so I changed Gerald to Ruby. I was wrong about the sex although the vet said it was difficult to tell with him. So the cats are Archie Barchie or just Arch and Ruby Dooby Dooby or Roo/Little Roo. Jasper is the sixth GSD we have had and I just liked the name. DH agreed to it as he is really his boy (but he's my baby). His kennel name is Jack Be Quick.

Our poodle/dachshund rescue dog was found living in a junk yard. She was named Toula by the rescue group, but we didn't like that. So my son (who is a big movie guy) decided she had to have a tough name. And the toughest female movie character he could think of was Sigourney Weaver's character in Alien, Ellen Ripley. So Ripley she is!

our shih tzu is named Riley because of no certain reason other than after about a week of figuring out a name we all liked Riley and it stuck.
Our outside, dropped off on us dog, is Rosie because when she first showed up she had rolled in something, most likely something dead and she STANK to high heavens.. needless to say she did NOT smell like roses, so she became Rosie.
Then I went to the vet to get flea meds for the 2 dogs and the vet tech lady at the desk, after talking and my refusing and saying no, plopped a tiny little kitten in my arms..sigh... she knew if I held it Id take it home with me.. so then we became sudden owners of a little bitty kitty that looks like a blue point siamese in coloring-but her litter mates were all solid gray.. Getting stuck on a "R" name wasnt really planned, we had Riley and Rosie by that point but they were both dogs, the cat could have had a different letter.. but. after a few days she became Ripley. so we have Riley, Rosie and Ripley..
The dropped off shiney black, green eyed cat that also was dumped on us(we live on a dairy farm, so it happens a lot) we broke the "R" trend and named her Toothless.. yep she has teeth, just like Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon...
and most recently, about 2 weeks ago I found 2 puppies in the ditch up the road. yep more drop offs. We have rehomed one of them already, and the other one that is still here is tentatively spoken for(with someone else in line), the 1st family in line is going out of country to a wedding in early June and has asked if we'd hang on to him til after that--then they'll fully decide.. but he so far has no name from us they like the name Mace, which I dont care for,but if they give him a home Mace it is if thats what they stick with.

Wili's (Pronounced like Willy) full name is Nawiliwili Ben. Nawiliwili is an area we were in in Kauai (and there is a funny story behind it). The name the rescue had given him was Ben. We wanted to call him Nawiliwili Peni (Hawaiian name for Ben), but, well, you know, it sounds funny. So, we kept his rescue name as his middle name. He is most commonly called Wili or Wili Ben. So, how did y'all come up with your pet name(s)? Mine have all been ohio state names including Buckeye, Brutus, Griffin and Gracie ( think scarlet and gray)

CoCo - she was suppose to be a chocolate poodle but she turned out more black, gold, silver. She's a real color mix but her name fits her because she is also quite prissy.
Bandit - he showed his true colors for stealing and hiding CoCo's toys the first day he came to live with us. I couldn't name him Thief so Bandit it was.
Maverick - he marches to his own drummer and is my little rebel.
Pebbles - I had wanted to name the puppies BamBam and Pebbles. DH was totally against BamBam (hence Maverick). I had been trying to convince him for 2 weeks on the names and by that time I was so used to calling her Pebbles that it stuck.

Turriff is the name of a town in the northeast of Scotland. My in-laws live in a town called Buckie, but even though I quite like that name, there is no way I could have called a dog that. This area of Scotland is known as the Bucky Belt, after a cheap, strong tonic wine called Buckfast that is very popular. If I went to the local park and shouted "Buckie!", I would be accosted by young... people, thinking I was selling it! So we got out an atlas and went around all the towns near Buckie. We liked Macduff, and also Cullen, but Turriff sounded tough, rough and gruff! Of course, he's turned out to be none of those things. His nickname is Tufty.

Our sweet pup, Bomber Scott, that passed away 2 years ago, was named after one of DH's favorite professional volleyball players. His name was Scott Ayakatubby. Well, we didn't care for Scott as a dog's name, and Ayakatubby is a HUGE name and very hard to spell, and would have weird nicknames. Scott A was given a nickname by one of his volleyball partner's kids..."the Bomber", due to how he spiked the ball. SO, we ended up calling him Bomber Scott-mostly called Bomber, Mr. B or Sweet B.

When I was 10, I picked the names Amanda and Michelle as my two daughter's names. Never had any kids at all and I was determined to use the names. I knew as Sugar Plum was getting elderly and that there would be no human kids that my next Dachshund would be named Amanda and she'd be a red longhair. Amanda is a very shorthair red and white double dapple and her brother was the same, only smaller. Amanda was the only surviving girl puppy and I remembered that Michel was French for Michael and pronounced the same as Michelle. So, I had Amanda, Michel, Davy is for Davy Jones (Monkee's) because he is also short and cute and Trouble's "real" name is Benji for the movie dog but Trouble fit him so well...
Sugar Plum was named for Peaches (fruit and starts with P) and Peaches was named that because she was kind of peach colored but mainly because she was found on the side of the road across from a peach orchard. Snoopy was born the same year that Charles Schultz and the "real" cartoon Snoopy died. Snoopy is the only name that I've used twice. I had a guinea pig named Snoopy when I was 14. And the name fit BOTH of them.
Funny thing is, a few years ago my cousin sent me what she'd gotten on the family tree so far. We are from north Louisiana and she found out that our grandmother's grandmother (our great-great) was French. None of the direct line is Michel, Michelle or Amanda BUT their are siblings with those names! And I'm a direct descendant of two Angelique's which is the closest any other relatives come to my name.

My dog's full name from the breeder is Beau Brummell something-or-other, so we just shortened it to Beau.
This area of Scotland is known as the Bucky Belt, after a cheap, strong tonic wine called Buckfast that is very popular.
That's funny! When we were kids we had a budgerigar. Our parents suggested the name Lucky (because he was lucky to have us as owners ) but my brother couldn't pronounce it properly so he became Bucky. Bucky the budgie.

My SIL found my precious dog walking down a busy street. He could tell by her appearance that she had been neglected or on her own for quite a while. r]He and my gc named her Sandy because she looked like Sandy the animal from Texas on SpongeBob. Even though they only had her for a day until I came to check her out ; i kept her name Sandy.
She is in my avatar.

We got our guinea pigs used, so they came with their names-Snickers and Oreo. Our hamster was named Kirby - it's what we would have named a dog, which we probably will never own. Our tortoise is named Sheldon because, well she is a tortoise and has a shell and we like Big Bang Theory. We named her before we got her, hence the male name for the female tortoise. We owned those pets at separate times- Sheldon is the only pet we have currently.

Our first cat was K.C. Lee Christopher. DH friend found a litter of kittens abandoned in the desert. DH(then DBF) gave him to me for Valentine's Day. His name was mine & DH first initials, and our middle names (we were 17, what can I say). Our first two dogs were Maxwell Edison and Sadie Renee', after Beatles songs. Renee' was just a name we liked with Sadie. Both were Chow/ Australian Shepherd mixes. Next dog is Karrigan Leigh (Leigh after K.C. Lee). She was a 3 month old stray Akita mix, that showed up at our front door, and no one ever claimed. We were watching Sex and the City when she strolled in, so we named her after Carrie Bradshaw. DH liked it spelled with a K instead of a C. She's is still with us 12 years later. Then there was our cat Mickey Winter. He was a black rescue cat with white front paws. DD was 3, and we had just got back from her first trip to Disneyland. She said he looked like Mickey Mouse. It snowed (in Vegas) the night he came home, so Mickey Winter it was. This one huts my heart, because he went to The Rainbow Bridge just after midnight Mother's Day morning, and we miss him so much. Especially our Karrigan. Oliver Zeppelin was our rescue Husky/Irish Wolfhound mix, that thought he was a lap dog. His tongue was as long as my arm, and he didn't hesitate to use it. Oliver means affectionate. He was our gentle giant. DH is a huge Led Zeppelin fan, so he decided on his middle name. We usually called him Big Guy or Prince Ollie. I'll spare you from all the past guinea pigs we have owned and fostered. Out current 3 are Disney Princesses. Our brown and black pig is Tianna Rose. Rose for the actress that provided the characters voice in the movie. Our two ginger pigs are Ariel Reece and Merida Harper. Reece and Harper are unused baby names I liked for DD. For non Disney fans, Tianna is the first black Disney princess, and Ariel and Merida are the two red headed Disney princesses. Last, but not least, is our Queen, London Destiny. When Mickey died, I told my kids we couldn't get another cat, because of the guinea pigs. Our habitat looks similar to a large 1960's wooden playpen. It's metal, and the bars are closer together, but you get the idea. I didn't think I could trust a cat not to jump in. I stopped at a Petco, I had never been to, on my way home from Joanns one day. I needed hay for the pigs, since my regular delivery was delayed because of storms. There was an adoption fair going on, by a rescue I had never heard of. I was curious about them, since they rescued exotic animals as well as "normal pets". It only took me a second to find the guinea pigs. As I sat down to visit, I noticed the most scraggly rat nasty gray kitten I have even seen, sleeping in the middle of the guinea pigs. When I asked the volunteer about her, she said they sprung her from a one day kill shelter in CA, she was abused, and they didn't know if she would be adoptable. She said the kitten wasn't good with people (she was a biter), but great with guinea pigs and big dogs. I had found my kitten soul mate. DD was obsessed with all things British at the time, and came up with the name London. Destiny was what it was. She just turned 2, and is a big, fluffy, gorgeous kitty. I knew she was a diamond in the rough. She still frightens easily, but will throw herself down on your lap for love, and tries to stick her entire face in your mouth, for a kiss. She has never bitten anyone, other than play fighting biting. She has all her claws fully intact, and has only clawed one corner of my box springs. 99% of the time she uses her scratching tools. Breaks my heart to think she was almost unadoptable.

For the last 20 years or so we have had all rescue dogs and kept all of their names. Even the one named Farmer, which I didn't like. I actually ended up calling him Boo-boo most of the time because he had been abused and had a bunch of open wounds on him when I got him.
When I was younger and my parents were buying the dogs they all came with papers that had names on them. The last one was Bridgette Hershette of Gidget Hershette Major. I don't really remember where all the other dogs we had came from. I wish my parents had kept all of our dogs papers. I have had dogs for 47 of my 49 years of life. For those 2 years after I was married I lived in an apartment, but my parents still had my dogs.

Our puppy is named Senna after the Brazilian Formula-1 driver Aryton Senna who died in an accident during a race. Even though our Senna is a girl, the name fits her. She is fast, fearless and has a big heart. When we adopted her, her name was Coral. Meh.
Our beloved shar-pei we lost, was Abby. When we adopted her, the humane society was calling her "Yuppy Puppy". That was NOT going to be her name. We didn't want a "pet" sounding name, and we all decided on Abby. It fit her perfectly too. I usually called her Abby Cadabby or Abbers. We miss her so much.

All of my animals, except my very first dog when I was 4, have been named from books. Currently we have Walter McFuzz- Walter is from Anne of Green Gables, McFuzz is from Dr. Seuss because he was born on Dr. Seuss Day. Kit Snicket from the Series of unfortunate Events Boo Peppermint, all white kitty named after Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird and Peppermint from my favorite childhood book about a white cat born at a candy store, the cat in the book was named Peppermint. Jo Buttons from the Wizard of OZ series, I don't remember the specific book, but there are 13 Jo characters in the book, each one named for the crop they grow. Jo Buttons grows buttons. Our Jo Buttons is all grey with one single perfect white circle on her chest that looks like a button. Pippin Meridoac Took, from LOTR. I figured my husbands taste in books should be represented since he lets me win all the naming animal debates! It fits her very well, she is little and loves to eat ( she is not fat or even chubby, but she purrs like crazy while eating, especially second breakfast!)

Great thread. Our dog naming is kind of random. We have Greyhounds and they come with kennel and "call" names. Some are hideous -"Patsy's Inner Strike Win" call name "inny" since the whole litter has Patsy. So we usually change the names. Our male was "Hot Foot Hail" from the storm litter. They called him Hail, not our thing. He is a big goofy dog so we call him Hank, it fits. We kept the girl's name Rocca since she was supposed to be a foster .
Now the Whippet was a quandary since we had no idea but just kept looking at his photos. He is a big tough though cute and mischievous looking Whippet, so we named him Vinny.
The birds came with their names with the exception of the cockatoo. Before we took him home he had fallen off his perch and injured his tail feathers. He was a baby so the feathers were deformed and had to be permanently removed. Since he had no tail, we named him Bob.

Our first lab, was a chocolate named Crinnigan. It was a family's deceased friend's last name who my husband was named after.
My husband always wanted Crinnigan to have a "little brother", so then came a yellow lab who we named LB. Unfortunately they didn't have much time together, only 3 months and we lost our beloved Crinnigan suddenly.
LB was so lonely about 6 months later came a black lab who my husband named Miller after his favorite beer.
Currently Crinnigan is 7 & Miller is 6. We are thinking of getting a chocolate lab to complete our family.
