Wili's (Pronounced like Willy) full name is Nawiliwili Ben. Nawiliwili is an area we were in in Kauai (and there is a funny story behind it). The name the rescue had given him was Ben. We wanted to call him Nawiliwili Peni (Hawaiian name for Ben), but, well, you know, it sounds funny. So, we kept his rescue name as his middle name. He is most commonly called Wili or Wili Ben. So, how did y'all come up with your pet name(s)?

That's so cute!
We're science geeks, so our animals are named after constellations and an astronomer: Perseus (Percy), Casseiopia (Cassie), and Sophia Brahe (Sophie).

I just never wanted anything that sounded like a pet. Buford Wilbur Mortimer Tyler and Jazmine were my XH picks!

You let your preteen boys do the naming and you end up with goofy ball names like Army and Navy.

Gadget got his name kinda from his papa. since dads name was gizmo and he looked like his dad when he was a tiny puppy We named him Gadget. Since Gadget is a small Gizmo.
Pearl got her name because I couldn't think of a name and her nose was like a black pearl. But as she ages her nose has lightened up to a brownish color.
Skippy came with his name. He was my moms dog. But my husband named him. My mom called us one day and told us she got a puppy and wanted to name him Tippy but I said no don't do that. and husband said why not skippy.

Daisy got her name because we got her just a few days after our wedding and I had daisies for my bouquet. So original, right?
Nemo (the fat cat) came with his name. I don't know if the shelter named him or his previous owner did (he was a surrender). I just didn't feel like changing it so it stayed Nemo.
Goldie is the hamster. DS2, who she belongs to, named her. He's not very original and loves adding -ie or -y to names so Goldie it was (she's a golden hamster).
My sister has my first cat, Caramel. I gave him that name because as a kitten he had caramel-colored eyes. As he got older, they got more green than tan.

My kids loved the Carl picture books by Alexandra Day. They feature a Rottweiler named (wait for it!), Carl. After we would look at the books together they would always say they wanted a girl cat named Carl. No idea why a girl cat, I guess just all ways to be opposite of the book! Anyway, when we got the dog (rescue lab german shepard mix) they were arguing over what to call her, Noodles and Blackie were in contention. I didn't like either name, so I suggested Carla in honor of Carl. They both loved it. Yay! Mom saved the day (and my sanity!)

My now 26 yr old named our first cat Oliver after the Disney movie Oliver and Company. Since then we've always named our animals after Disney characters.
We currently have dogs - Koda (Brother Bear), Nita (Brother Bear 2), Ryder (Tangled) and cat - Max (Tangled). We've also had O'Malley (The Aristocats) a big orange Persian cat, Kenai (Brother Bear) our first Samoyed and Koda's older brother and Jasmine (Aladdin) a shelter kitty.

Charlie after Charlie Chaplin because of his mustache (well technically he only has half a mustache). My son wanted me to name him Kitler but I said no way. My ginger car Lyra came with her name. Attachments:

We have two cats; a huge black cat named "Shadow" because he follows my husband everywhere (and I mean everywhere), and a small black and white female named "Mina" because the day we got her we were watching Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and Mina was the female lead in that show.

Mickey (Pit Mix) was nameless for almost a month because she didn't seem to love anything that we tried and we feel like they should choose their names. My parents came to visit and as they got there at 2am and we sat on the couch chatting for a minute before going back to bed a mouse ran out of the wood stacked by the fireplace. My stepdad tried to find it and said "Here Mickey Mickey, where'd you go? " and the puppy went crazy following him around. Mickey it is.
Roscoe (blue heeler) was my brothers dog but he was staying with us when Roscoe went blind so he stayed so he can have someone home with him most of the time, the farm wasn't safe anymore. He was named after Roscoe P Coltrane on The Dukes of Hazzard. He usually just goes by Roscoe but when he does something silly we call him 'Roscoe P Coltrane guh guh guh'
Biggie Smalls is our Pomeranian. He was tiny as a puppy and started bossing Mick around by day two. By day three he had her trained well enough that she would lay on the floor and he would sit in her mouth chewing on her lip. Insanity. He's got the biggest personality in the world and the smallest body so it's Biggie Smalls. We also happened to baby him nonstop (err, still baby him?) so we really just call him puppy. My mom calls him baby when she visits because I rock him to sleep everynight as he lays on his back in my arms like an infant as I rub his belly. He doesn't care what we call him as long as he gets attention.
Our Bearded Dragon is "Sir Beardimus Darnell McWaffles the Third" We were namestorming and the MTV episode from our wedding was on so the kids pulled Beardimus from Beardimus Maximus in the episode. Darnell is just one of their favorite names and some of our best friends in VA have a dragon named pancake. They decided they're cousins so he should be waffle, but McWaffles just sounds more regal. the third is completely random. We never had a first or second, but that doesn't especially matter around here.
We're thinking about putting a room divider in with a saltwater fish tank. I can't even begin to process what the process for naming fish will be. ha

The first hamster was named Yorgi, because he was a Russian dwarf hamster and my son loved the movie XXX - Yorgi was the russian villain.
2nd hamster was named Smudge - he was white with black spots, which looked like he'd been in a chimney and gotten smudges of dirt on him.
And for a very short time (only as long as it took to turn him over to a local petting zoo), we had a rabbit named Monsoon - we rescued him from the middle of the parking lot at my work, half drowned in a huge thunderstorm. His brother had died in the same thunderstorm; no idea what happened to mama.

Ok, this is a long one and I am sure I have told it before but.....our cat was brought home by our son as a tiny kitten. He had named the cat Thor because he and his gf had just watched Thor at the movies. Ok. Great. So I don't want this cat because I know who is going to be caring for it. Me.
Anyway while my husband is away on a business trip, my dear old, old, old cat Pepper dies. The same week this kitten has a trip to the vet to get checked out. Turns out HE is a SHE! I am not calling this girl cat THOR. But I have no idea what to name her. DH is gone, teenagers are never home. So she became Chitty Chat. And it has stuck and now WE are the proud owners of this cat because said son is away at college.

Or newest cat is named Dave after my favorite minion from Despicable Me. Dave is actually his MIDDLE name. DH insisted on having a "real" name for the vets because his first name is "Seriously?" which was DH's first reaction when he saw DD and me holding a kitten at the local farmer's market-- "Another cat? Seriously? I mean, Seriously?" In actuality, Dave has 2 first names. Besides Seriously we are always yelling Dammit! So he is either Seriously, Dave or Dammit! Dave. And yes, there are times when we use all three, usually after he has made a huge mess by knocking something over or trying to trip us as we are walking down the hall: Dammit Dave! Seriously? And I did get a laugh because although his record at the vets only has "Dave" on the folder, they know him as Seriously Dave.

Our two tuxedo cats are Charles Spencer Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich because they're black and white stars. They're called Marley and Charlie. The two tabbies are Skippy Jon Jones because he's a SJJ kind of kitten who would rather be a chihuahua. Twinkie came to us after her intensive socialization foster named Twiggy, but we didn't like that, so we changed it a bit to Twinkie.

Our old cat died. No one had ever had allergy problems so we couldn't understand when DD was miserable when the new kitten joined us. We joked that we should name the cat "Benadryl" in her honor. And thus Benny was named.

Abbey is named and spelled that way for The Abbey of the Genesee. Monks live there near Geneseo NY and that's where I went to undergrad college. It's a quiet peaceful place. Oh and they make great bread there.
Her entire name is Abbey of the Genesee Cream Ale (Genesee Cream Ale was my grandpa's favorite beer)

We were on vacation in Florida (not at all planning on getting a dog) but we saw Princess Honeybelle of Charlotte County in a pet store and our daughter threw such a fit that we sold our auto train tickets and drove back to CT to Florida.
The origin of her name: My daughter and MIL wanted Princess....our favorite orange is the Honeybelle.....and our condo was located in Charlotte County....

Our first cat is named Tuesday. She was one of 7 kittens in a litter...each named after a day of the week. Our second cat is named Gus. We enjoyed the TV show "Pysch" and liked the character of the same name. Of course they are both sitting on the desk right now, watching me type!

All of our dogs have been / are sable & white Shelties... and most have AZ place names. the first one was named even before we picked her out-- Sedona: after the red rocks in Sedona, AZ, because she was that color. Once we got another one, we decided to keep the AZ place name trend. Our others are Bisbee (quirky small town in southern AZ; fits her personality), and Prescott (this one is a male; stronger-sounding name). Our adopted retired show dog's name is Krista-- rather than trying to change her name we decided to keep hers so as not to confuse her. If/when we get another Sheltie, it will have to be another AZ place name to go with the trend. The cats used to get names that sort of 'fit' them-- -- Pandora got into things and caused trouble, lol! Her name fit her perfectly-- she went without a name for a week or so, actually, till I came up with that. (her rescue name was Fallon- bleck!) -- Butters is orange & white and reminded me of the South Park character, Butters Stotch Butters the cat sort of has the same worried/vacant expression sometimes, lol! (Her rescue name was Fancy- blech!) The other two cats had decent names from the rescue place, so we kept them: Ariel (was Arielle; she was not that 'princessy' so I changed it slightly), and Zola (she's the youngest, and kind of crazy, so her name suits her.) I don't like the typical 'pet-type' names but for me, it's more about suiting the personality of the animal, somehow. And it has to have a 'hard' sound to it so it sounds stronger when they get in trouble and we have to yell at them, lol.

Spike(yorkie/Chihuahua mix) got his name because he was a whopping 3 pounds when we got him and I thought it was funny!
Layla(teacup yorkie), I have always wanted a Yorkie named Layla, so there that is!
Bayleigh(shi Tzu) came with her name. If I had named her, it would have been Daisy so I could call her crazy Daisy, cause she is!

Our dog is Simba and that was the name that the shelter gave her when she was brought in as a stray. Someone liked "The Lion King" I guess...? My dh thought we should change it because he says "Simba" is a name for a tawny colored cat, not a black dog. lolol. But the kids wouldn't have it -- dd said "but Mom, she's already sad because she was a stray and she was in this awful shelter, so we can't take away her name!!!!" awwww So we didn't. And, for the record, the shelter is a very good one. But Simba is much happier here with us.

I became aware of the blog Posie Gets Cozy, and loved the name, so decided that when we got our next dog, it would be female and I would name her Posie.
DS had already named our existing dog Lilly. We did finally get our second dog, but DH and DS both hated the name Posie. So I sealed the deal by going to Petco and making her a tag with the name Posie. Her middle name is Sue and she gets called Posie Sue quite frequently because she is a mischief-maker.

Our dog, Cleveland, came with his name, so I have no idea where it came from. I tried calling him Charlie when we first got him, but he wouldn't respond, so Cleveland it is. We did add a middle name, though, so his name is Cleveland Prancer (he prances when he walks..lol).

Casey (lab/chow mix) was named after the KC-10 airplanes. My DH was the Intel Flight Commander for the squadron way back when SAC was still around.
Sandy (golden/lab mix) came to us named. We thought we would change it, but it suited her. So we kept the name.
Emma (lab) is from Jane Austin's book. It's a name not used for our kids. We only had two and planned for more, so we have lots of leftover names. The next dog will be Scout, from To Kill A Mockingbird.
