Our dog Krystal was named by my then 8 year old daughter and her friend. Apparently that was a popular pet name for amongst kids that age. I knew of 2 cats and a guinea pig that were given the same by their kid owners. It does suit her as she is a blue merle Australian Shepard.
Our Golden Retriever was named Marcus Aurelius by my husband, shortened to Marcus. The two dogs he was bred from had these long grandiose names and my husband thought his puppy should have an equally impressive name. LOL

I have two cats we got as babies..brothers who were six weeks old. They're 11 now and the names don't really fit as much as they did, but oh well. These aren't current, just what I had in Photobucket. I have a blue eyed Snowshoe named Chase, because as a baby he'd chase us around howling until we picked him up. We could walk around with him perched on our shoulders for hours. Even know, he loves to be carried around so he's high up to see everything. We call him Chasey, bad boy or bad ol' Chasey. And if I even whisper the word "treats" he comes running. I spoil him with bits of food. (This was 7 years ago.. we had just moved into our Charlotte house and were camping in the living room before our furniture arrived. That's my son and Chase's favorite person in the background). His brother is the big tabby.. Hunter. He used to love to play and stalk us, jumping out at us. His name is not even close anymore..he's over 20 pounds and flops on the floor to eat. He's generally known as Buddha Cat. He never ever lets us pick him up.. unless we're at the vet, then he's all about being held. He also has a tiny little meow like a kitten.. I took him to a new vet who thought we had a small kitten, until we lifted the lid and out oozed the big boy.

We went through ever name list we could find. There were lots that I liked, but none that DH liked. We had both liked "Flynn", but agreed that it didn't suit him. Finally DH suggested Riker (after some star trek or star wars guy). He didn't tell me where the name was from, but I liked it. So the guy in my avatar is named Riker.

My kids vetoed all my choices and named our dogs (and that's ok because I got to name them.) We have a springer named Baxter (a Maine "place" name) and a shih tzu named Phoebe because my daughter liked it. I call Phoebe "Weebee" a lot because that's how my toddler nephew pronounced her name. And Baxter is more like "Baxtah" because...Maine.

I've had a LOT of cats over the years. Some of my favorite names are as follows:
Violetta was a fluffy gray tabby who was abandoned by former neighbors when they moved. We couldn't get near her at first and she got pregnant before we could get her spayed. My mom named her Violetta after a character in an opera who was a prostitute. She also had a very loud meow, so the name fit. Velvet showed up as a very malnourished kitten with mange. After her rough start in life, I thought she should have a beautiful name, so she became Velvet. She is fat and has a gorgeous, soft, shiny coat now! Pewter was dumped in my driveway when she was a six week old kitten. I named her after the fat gray cat in the Rita Mae Brown Miss Murphy mysteries, mainly because she is a lovely blue-gray. My cat Otto was originally named Othello. He wouldn't come to the name until I shortened it, so Otto he became.

The cat is Golden Girl but we always call her Goldie. She is a calico that just showed up at our back door one very cold January night. Dh and I are University of Missouri alumni so we thought we would name her Tiger after the mascot but it turned out it was a girl cat so did refused to name a girl Tiger. So we named her Golden Girl after the dance team at the university.
The dog is Truman. He is a tri-colored beagle so he pretty much matches the cat. So we stuck with our theme and named him after the mascot at MU, Truman the tiger. His name gets shortened a lot to T-dog.

My parents have two cats that are brothers that they named Stanley and Ollie. They are named after Laurel and Hardy. The cats don't really make a good comedy team though.

Biru was my 17 year old Traditional Siamese cat who went to the Rainbow Bridge this past December. When I got him as a kitten a family friend had just gotten back from spending a couple of years living in Thailand. Thailand used to be called Siam where Siamese cats originally came from. So I asked him for some Thai words-we came up with Biru pronounced Bee Roo-it means Blue-for his gorgeous blue eyes.
I am now on the waiting list for another Traditional Siamese male kitten, and I guess it's time to start thinking about names again. It's hard though when he's not here yet. That might have to wait until he's here with us.

Cosmo (dog) was named for Cosmo Kramer. Lukin (dog) was named after a Pearl Jam song. Gussy (cat) was named for the band Guster. Wilbur (cat) was named for Wilbur in Charlotte's Web, because when he sounds like a piggy when he eats Brutus (fish) was named because he has an underbite, so he reminds me of a bulldog named Brutus.

current cats:
Oreo - he's black and white Toby (Tobias) - it just seemed to fit Tabby - he was going to be Tabitha but she turned out to be a he so... Mini - when the kittens were born, DH nicknamed them Mini, Macro (Toby), Midi(Tabby) and Nano. Mini was the only B/W of the lot and looked like a mini-me of his mum so the name stuck - the other three were tabby cats. Smokey - he's grey like smoke Little Friend - Annabelle named her when she showed up in the yard..."look Mummy, I have a Little Friend" Midnight - he's all black.
Previous Cats:
Panda - he was black and white like the British police 'panda' cars Chance - also black and white like dice Stoner - Grey like stone Noah(grey/white) and Jacob (black) - Simon named them as kittens with Bible names
Our fish is called Levi (Leviathan) - he started out about 1" long and is now about two feet long - the name fits

Our current dog is Deego. He's a Cairn Terrier and we initially named him Fergus because it just seemed nice. But DS, who was about 2 when we got the dog, kept saying, "Where'd he go?" But it sounded like "Where Deego?" and it just kind of stuck.

I've only ever named one pet--a German Shepherd puppy. I was about 4 years old. I vaguely recall throwing out name after name until I finally hit one that my dad deemed somewhat acceptable for a grown man to call a grown dog. And so he was named Prince.

We only have one pet, a cat. I had been adamant that I did not want a pet in the house, but she "found" us this past Christmas when someone abandoned her in our neighborhood. The girls never begged to keep her, but they were so good about caring for her and making plans to find her a good home. DH and I wrapped three cat-related gifts (toys and catnip) for them to open last on Christmas morning, and that is when they found out we had decided they could keep her.
Since she was their little "Christmas cat," Noelle was the logical choice. They also considered "Joy."

Our rescue came to us with the name Miss Charlotte, which we shortened to Charlie. Since Will and Kate had the baby she prefers to be addressed as Princess Charlotte, thank you very much.

At the moment we have three and a half cats. The half is a stray that comes and goes as he pleases and is well tolerated by my others. We have called him Chesney after a character in Coronation Street, who is red headed, and 'our' Chesney is ginger.
The others are Stanley, Huckleberry and Sherlock.

We have two cats and two dogs. The cats came first.
Stitch is our oldest cat. We got him because some people we know had a pregnant cat abandoned in their yard. They found homes for all the kittens except the runt. They were going to take him to the SPCA and my animal loving, soft hearted DS was hysterical that the cat would be killed. So, he came to live with us. He is a blue gray color and when he was a kitten, he was tiny with huge ears. DS said he looked like Stitch and was looking for a family just like him.
AJ is our other cat. She was a gift to older DS from his BFF in high school. He named the cat after his nickname for her. They both went on to college and then to their careers and the cat still lives here.
Gracie is my older girl pup. The breeder had already named her but I was looking to change the name. She was born on July 4th and I wanted to name her Liberty and call her Libby but DH and the boys hated it. We couldn't agree on a name so we ended up keeping her original name. It suits her beautifully and I am glad we never changed it.
Dexter is the "baby" of the family. DH wanted another dog for awhile and I finally caved in and got another one as a surprise for him. DS named him Dexter after the tv character. Dex isn't a serial killer, but he is a crazy dog and the name suits him also.

We don't have one right now but our last dog was named, Sparky. When we adopted him he was 9 weeks old and we were thinking about what to name him. When we met him he was just perfect in every way. He already had been given that name and we felt like that was already part of him and we loved him so we kept it.

Abbey is named and spelled that way for The Abbey of the Genesee. Monks live there near Geneseo NY and that's where I went to undergrad college. It's a quiet peaceful place. Oh and they make great bread there. Her entire name is Abbey of the Genesee Cream Ale (Genesee Cream Ale was my grandpa's favorite beer) Love it christine58! My SO got his start in the beer industry as a salesman for Genesee.

Our chocolate point himalayan is named Shunra, which is the Aramaiac word for cat. So, we have a cat named Cat: it's not very original but he doesn't seem to mind. He's got at least a dozen nicknames so he hardly ever gets called by his real name. He's gentle and lovable and answers to anything he gets called. (Maybe we should have named him Zen.)

Bob, Sam (Sampson), and Molly were all named by the shelters we adopted them from. Though Molly may have been given her name by the original family. Bob was named because of his bobbed tail. Sampson was named because he was a very sick little kitten, was in hospital multiple times, and they didn't expect him to make it during a couple of visits. He also has medium to long fur, so strength and beautiful fur = Sampson.

He was my daughter's dog first, and she named him Dewey after a friend of hers who lives in Texas. I think it's a fairly common southern name, but here in the East people often ask if he's named after the Dewey Decimal System. He has a doggy friend named Truman, and the Truman/Dewey jokes are also plentiful.

My tuxedo kitty is Jasper, named after Jasper, Alberta, Canada. One of my favorite places and we had just come back from a trip there when we got him. We have three gray and white litter mates also: Razor- named after Daryl "Razor" Reaugh, the Dallas Stars color commentator. Rosie- she's a sweet little lady. Katie- no real reason. Another sweetheart. Tater- interesting story. When he was a tiny kitten he crawled up in my husband's truck. DH kept hearing a cat meowing for two days at work and home. Couldn't find one. Thought he was crazy. Got home one night and kept hearing it. Popped his hood and there was this teeny tiny little solid black kitty. Put him in the garage away from the others until we could have the vet check him out. Amazingly, he was fine. We wanted to name him Chevy for the truck story but he insisted on sleeping on the potatoes during his garage time so we finally settled on Tater. Cats seem to find me.

The dog in my signature was named Pooka. A pooka is a mischievous spirit and he was definitely that. When he passed away last year, I was heartbroken (still am), but DH thought I needed a new companion. I have had a pet of some sort for most of my life. I fought him at first and wouldn't even look at rescues that he found. I finally relented and looked at several Shih Tzu that had been rescued.
I decided to try out the one who had the most to do with me. He was 10 months old and had spent most of that time locked in a crate. We brought him home and he acted like he had always lived here. He was so lively and fun. I found out later that he had a lot of trouble trusting anyone because of being crated and they thought he was going to be hard to place.
I have worked a lot with him to help him get over his trust issues. I took him to dog obedience classes and tried to socialize him as much as I can. He has been a balm on my broken heart. My oldest suggested the name Sage because of it's healing properties and he responded to it really well. He has come a long way since we first got him and I think that we have been really good for one another.

Our big ginger tom is Gryffindor after Harry Potter. He gets Gryff. The Ragdolls are Hektor and Achilles after the boy's favourite movie. Hektor gets Princess, and Achilles gets Chilly or Chilly-boy. The chihuahua-pug cross was my sister's. He was Rusty when he arrived. Now he's Frankenstein, cos he looks like he was made from three different dogs. He gets Frank or Frankie. The rescue kitties are Sirius and Orion, after the constellations. (also after Sirius Black, my fave Harry Potter charactor). Sirius gets Whyso (as in Why so Serious) and Orion gets Kneazle (cos he's a bit magic, like Crookshanks). The lizard is Loki after the Norse god of mischief. He gets Happy, cos he smiles with his mouth open when you bring him silkworms. The fish are Harry Potter and Ninja cos they keep disappearing. One apparates and one hides in plain sight. The rest of the fish are called Fingers.

Someone gave our first Shih Tzu to dh late one night when he was doing some work outside of a McDonald's. His name was Dulce, but we changed it to Mickey D. Our second Shih Tzu was from the SPCA. They were calling him Jack-Jack. I didn't particulary like that, but thought 'Two Jacks - Jax'. So we call him Jax. Although what we actually call him now is Fat Jax. He tends to eat way more than his fair share of the dog food. Our German Shepherd is named Skylar. No story behind that one. It was dh's choice and he just liked that name.
