I saw a story about McDonald's the other day--it was just up on the newsline for one day really, but it said McDonald's will be cutting nearly half of the items on its menu and severely restricting what you can order at the window. Some of the larger more complicated burgers will no longer be available at the window. I just sort of scanned it, so I can't tell you when this is supposed to happen, but I can understand the need just based on this thread. They will definitely lose a lot of business if they do that. The McDonalds around here have limited dining room hours but the drive thru is open 24 hours. Not allowing people to order something outside of dining room hours means that they will go elsewhere.

I've got one. If you need to bring a library cart (like they use for reshelving books) into starbucks to take back orders for the whole office, then you had better call that order in ahead of time instead of just coming in with your 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with the orders on it DURING MORNING RUSH HOUR.

Drive-thru liquor stores are not available in all states. No but they are well known in the U.S. That was the point. We don't even drink.

Really??? Common sense dictates no matter whether you place your order inside or through the drive thru the order placed first will be filled first. That is company policy. Doesn't matter if you are in the drive thru. First order is filled first.

Doesn't matter if you are in the drive thru. First order is filled first. Depends on the setup of the kitchen. There is often one line for the dine-in orders and one for drive through, with the expectation that drive thru orders will be filled much more quickly (because it's assumed people using the drive thru are in a rush).

What's annoying is when someone makes sure their order is correct while still sitting at the window. Sorry but I'm going to check my order before I leave. I use the drive through because I can't get around well these days. Going in is not an option. Eh, don't be sorry. I realize two things: one, there are circumstances in which I recognize I am an asshole, and two, being irritated is my issue. So, you continue to sit there and check your order and when I get irritated I'll think of you, and assume the person can't get around well.

What's annoying is when someone makes sure their order is correct while still sitting at the window. I do that. I'm not driving away to find out half of my food is missing, and then waiting in the drive through for another half hour to get it fixed, or parking and walking in to wait in line inside. Going back through the drive through would be silly. I'd assume you'd march your ass right up to the counter, plop down the bag, and loudly declare they got your order wrong. Really, Seriously though, you can't tell me you don't get slightly annoyed when you sit there for a good two or three minutes after someone has received all their food? I do a quick peak to make sure I got, for example, a burger and fries, but these people are opening burgers and making sure it was made to order.

I used to unwrap food to, because my son would not eat his burger if there was anything on it. And to check to see if the burgers were cooked , because way back when we had several very bad cases of E. coli.

Wait, wait, you have drive through banking??? Of course. We're Americans. Give us the opportunity to do our business without getting off of our butts and we're happy. I'm glad you said that and not me It really does enable almost everything to be done by car though doesn't it!!

I wonder how long before we have them too Well we've had them for 30+ years so if they haven't caught on by now they might not. I'd have agreed except that BarbaraUK says they are being set up here now and I'm sure more will follow! We get there in the end

I think McDonald's will actually find itself more profitable if they limit their menu and if they limit the drive through.

We get there in the end There's a Natwest in Nottinghamshire that has a drive through (just the one, though). I'm not sure how long it's been there, but it's certainly many years!

I think that falls under common courtesy. Just like the morons who use drive up banking and sit there making out their deposit slip, rooting around in their car,and doing general jackassery instead of being ready for the teller when they pull up. Wait, wait, you have drive through banking??? We do...all over the US

I think its Dunkin Donuts job to manage this. I think if it was that large of an order you would ask the person to pull over and not clog the drive through.
There is NO way I would wait 15 mins at Dunkin Donuts..or any fast food place to place an order...

What's the point of walking in, when we went through the drive-through in the first place? The whole point of drive through is to avoid parking, getting out of the car, hauling the kids out of the car, and waiting in line inside.

@gar, I lost track. Did anyone's mention drive-through drycleaners and laundries? We used to be able to get milk at our Braums drive thru too, not anymore. It's an ice cream / hamburger type that sells dairy products.
Feel free to repeat "fat American-assery" comments now!!!

Doesn't matter if you are in the drive thru. First order is filled first. Not true at every company. I have had restaurants tell me that they are graded on how long drive thru orders take, but are not graded on how long dine in orders take. Therefore, drive thru orders are always filled first. Further, most restaurants here are set up with 2 separate lines. One for drive thru and one for dine in. There are almost always twice as many workers on the drive thru side. So dine in orders automatically take longer.

I drove through a McDonald's the other day and after I paid, the guy handed me a little sand timer before going to the pick up window and said that if my order wasn't ready by the time the sand ran out, I'd get a coupon for a free burger. It wasn't, and I got a free burger coupon. I can't imagine they do that at the walk up counter inside, but maybe they do. Just made me think that they really do try and pump the drive thru orders out. I wonder if they do the same thing for multiple orders.

Oy. And this is why it would be impossible to regulate common courtesy. It probably never occurred to them that they would slow people down in a situation like that. Because it's all about convenience. Well, their own convenience.

DH and I went to Starbucks today and they had sign "to call ahead or come inside for large orders". DH wondered about why there was a sign like that and I told him what I read here !! Lol!!

this thread has the makings of a Louis CK joke about waiting 15 whole minutes to place an order for food that you have to put no effort into...other than waiting
