Are professional counselors mandatory reporters? If they had to deal with anyone from CPS/DFS or whatever they are called. They are all mandatory reporters.

The Duggar's(Dad and Mom) asked to be famous, they asked for the spotlight to be shone onto their family and did so knowing full well that this was likely to come out, to think otherwise is simple willful ignorance on their part. They are to blame for what those girls are going through now, right or wrong that is the way our society works, those who are in the public eye have every aspect of their lives looked at and examined and combed over with a fine tooth comb. They knew this and they CHOSE to open themselves and their family up to this circus, if anyone is to blame for the revictimization of those girls it's Jim Bob and Michelle.
Yes people are upset and tearing into this but not because of their Christian lifestyle but because of their Christian lifestyle AND the fact they held themselves up as examples of how to live a wholesome life devoted to Jesus all while knowing full well what was going on under their roof. If this had happened in some backwater town USA to a family no one had ever heard of this would not be news.

Yes things that happen after can be worse than the initial assault, things like your parents covering up for your assailant, things like your parents making you go on a TV show all about how wonderful and happy and wholesome your family is when you know it's a lie, things like your parents minimizing what happened to you as not so bad because it wasn't rape. Yes there are worse things. I get the anger (if that's the right word), and I agree and think it's the right reaction to have... I also get that because of their beliefs and things they've said about others, there's a certain kind of extra sting to it all... I may be reading it wrong but it seems like there's a bit of a sarcastic tone to what you wrote... No one, NO ONE, knows what hurts those victims or in what ways... What if this all wasn't as bad as the assaults... Would it somehow be okay to still make a circus of it and hurt them only a little? I don't agree with the Duggars but two wrongs don't make a right... That report/information was supposed to be destroyed and it should have been... We wouldn't get to point and judge and get twisted joy out of seeing their words come back to bite them in the ass, but those victims would have their privacy and ownership of their experience...

I hear about protecting the girls, but what about the young boys. I would worry about whether he could have hurt them too. I would be protecting all the children, girls and boys. Oh, no, don't worry about the boys. Josh is a "good Duggar Christian" so he'd never want to diddle with a boy. That's homosexuality, disgusting, and that's a sin. It's much more preferable to diddle his little sisters. And again I have to think & say it, Those poor girls. They never had a chance in that sham of a family. Actually, it's not homosexuality, it's still pedophilia. Unless you are saying it from their perspective of how they would say it. Then okay, I get it.

This story is very personal to me. Someone very close to me endured something VERY similar, right down to the age of both her and her brother, the attacker. This being news has stirred up all of her trauma all over again, and I can't imagine what it's doing to the victims of this specific crime. What Josh did is disgusting and inexcusable. And what his parents did is egregious. And I strongly suspect the girls did NOT receive the proper care and healing, and it's obvious that Josh did not receive proper punishment. But the media bears responsibility now too in the girls' trauma and healing. As far as anyone knows, there is no CURRENT abuse to anyone. Running big, national news stories was nothing more than a "oooooo look what the sanctimonious Christians did behind closed doors!" Calling them on hypocrisy is one thing. And if there was legal action that could be taken now--absolutely report it, to LAW ENFORCEMENT, not to the court of public opinion. Exploiting the abuse endured by 5 young girls when there is nothing that can ACTUALLY be done to rectify it at this point, is disgusting. This isn't bringing about justice to Josh and it never has been. All it did was reveal a very personal trauma that these girls may or may not have wanted to be public knowledge, and which they had no control in revealing. Who is holding the media accountable for THAT? For stirring up pain and triggers for no virtuous purpose? The girls are being victimized again, and this time, it's not by either their parents or their brother. I had mentioned before about my best friend being a victim of sexual abuse (way more than touching) and like your friend, it has been very hard. The first night after this came out, she was not able to sleep and has had nightmares since. She often has nightmares and flashbacks while awake, but this seemed to really hit her hard. So then I guess news about burglaries and murders should never be reported on as well, as other victims of those crimes may have to relive it?

And yes, I agree that it would still be pedophilia if he molested his little brothers.

I'll let you know how disruptive to my day seeing a news report about murder is after I'm murdered... I should back out of this thread... In Canada, victims aren't identified... Not by name, the parents/relatives aren't identified if that could allow someone to figure out who the victim is... I'm beyond shocked that it was revealed that his sisters were victims... The story could have been told and made without saying anything identifying about the victims...

I agree that the interview was disappointing. I don't feel for a minute that the interview would have been this soft if it was someone who wasn't Christian conservative. That was really disappointing.
The only question Megyn even pushed a little bit on was the robocall thing and the fact that Michele was so offensive with her comments about transgenders molesting children in public restrooms. They ended up changing the subject though and she totally let them! It killed me because she followed it up with "protecting girls was important to her" and then went on to say that "people were trying to twist things to hurt and slander". Seriously Michele? What do you think you were doing when you made those calls trying to get people to vote against anti-discrimination legislation by saying that transitioning men who used public women's restrooms would molest girls. Complete and utter hypocrisy!
I do have to say though that I'm almost 100% positive that Michele didn't say "lesbian agenda". She said "there must be an agenda" and the way that it was kind of slurred together it DID sound like "lesbian agenda", but it really wasn't. The first time I listened I heard what you did but after a couple of re-listens, I heard what she really said.

Thanks for clarifying - I had thought you guys were similar to us in that regard and I think that's what's struck me the most about all this... Here they won't identify the assailant if it means people could figure out who the victims were... It made my heart jump when the fact that it was family members that were victims wasn't redacted... To say it happened in their home or on their property is one thing, to say it happened to a sibling is another for me... Whole thing stirred me up... When she said that they don't let boys babysit it bothered me... Felt too much like boys will be boys so what can you do...

Those are their parents, their mother who didn't stand up for them and fight for them and tell them that they were worth fighting for. I can only imagine that on top of what had already happened that had to seem like the ultimate horror to them. But I don't know for sure, maybe they are fine with it all, maybe they forgave and forgot truly because they wanted to not because that is what they were supposed to do. I do know that regardless of how they do feel, this is not my fault, this is not the journalists fault, this is no one but Josh, Jim Bob and Michelle's fault. I do feel for the girls, I cannot imagine the horror of watching your trauma being dissected by the media and the worldwide public but again that is on JimBob and Michelle, they could have made sure this never happened and they didn't.

This whole news has appalled me. It was terrible for this to happen but it is also terrible that it came out from a juvenile record. I know this has personally hit many people as so many have had this happen to them or a family member. I think it would be hard to have the perpetrator and the victims be in the same family. I don't want to monsterize the Duggars - I just hope they are able to handle life from this point forward. I'm sure that someone received a boatload of money for this news story to come out in a tabloid.

I have read and seen on the news that minors that send naked pictures to each other have been charged with child porn. If a minor in that case can be charged, why wouldn't Josh be charged with child molesting?

It's the same reason that a judge refused to unseal the record of Michael Brown, the Ferguson shooting victim... Whatever your opinion on that is, the small additional redaction of details that would have prevented people from being able to identify the victims as his sisters was sloppy... The story would have just as much merit with only Josh, Michelle, and Jim Bob's names... ETA: they can be released in a limited number of very specific circumstances - if the juvenile is later charged with a felony, if the Supreme Court makes a ruling, etc... It's never up to the discretion of a police chief and/or attorney... The harm done by allowing victim names to be discovered is huge... It is a rear fear that will prevent others from coming firer and reporting abuse...

About disclosing the juvenile record under the FOIA - I got this from a newscast the day before Megyn Kelly's interview.
the freedom of information laws in Arkansas clearly state "Records of the arrest of a juvenile, the detention of a juvenile shall be confidential and shall not be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act."
This is why I thought it should not have been released. I'm sorry the victims have to relive this. My heart is with them and I hope that they can go on to live happy, fulfilled lives. I have a family member that has gone through this and it is heartbreaking.

Josh wasn't arrested. He was questioned during the investigation. Records are made of interviews and interrogations. It wasn't an arrest record that was released.

About disclosing the juvenile record under the FOIA - I got this from a newscast the day before Megyn Kelly's interview. the freedom of information laws in Arkansas clearly state "Records of the arrest of a juvenile, the detention of a juvenile shall be confidential and shall not be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act." This is why I thought it should not have been released. I'm sorry the victims have to relive this. My heart is with them and I hope that they can go on to live happy, fulfilled lives. I have a family member that has gone through this and it is heartbreaking. He wasn't arrested though, or even detained, because unlike the girls his parents didn't bring him in for formal questioning, and the statute of limitations had passed. My heart goes out to the victims as well, and I too have family members who have been through this. On the other hand I also have children who the elder Duggars and their ilk slander as deviants and potential molesters, and work to limit their rights, so much of this feels personal to me too.

I posted but deleted because others brought up the fact that he wasn't arrested or detained, as well as that he was 18 at the time of the investigation.
