Would you rather stay home or do you like to go away to crop? I have never had a store that I could go to for crops or retreats, but have occasionally been able to go to weekend retreats out-of town. I like going away to scrap. I have gone with a friend and alone and it's always like a mini vacation. I enjoy the energy of being around others who "get it". It's nice to have that time that's dedicated for scrapping with no distractions of family or work. Don't even mind the packing and unpacking, but it's a once yearly if that often thing.
It's also nice being home with all my stuff too. I'm lucky enough to have my own space that I can spread out in and make a mess. I can start something and leave it if I don't have time to finish.
So, crops and retreats ... love 'em or leave 'em?

Tough call.
I like cropping at home so that I have everything close by. I like cropping at retreats bc of the energy and I seem to get lots done as I have things preplanned and kitted. No overwhelming choices to work through.

It's hard to know in advance-- there's so much about a crop or a retreat that can make it absolutely miserable. Like when there is someone at the crop who will not. stop. talking. ever.
For the most part, I am happy to craft at home, but sometimes I like the challenge of going away to craft. Sometimes having ALL my stuff at my fingertips is overwhelming.

It seems that the only scrapping I have done in the past 5 years is a scrapbook retreat or a crop with others at my home. The truth is that my craft/office space has become so disorganized that it keeps me from going in there. My scrapbook supplies are pretty organized. It's just the other stuff that seems to fill the room when I'm not looking!

It really all depends on what is going on and what I have time for. Twice a year 3 friends and I go to a cabin and spend 5 days. Everyone has their own king bedroom and bath. We have been doing this for the last 10 or so years. This is my favorite place to scrap. No interuptions, a few adult beverages and relaxing. We know each other very well so you can stay up as late as you like, or go shop and come back.
I also do a monthly crop at a store. That's fun for me. I've cut back on packing for these trying to lighten the load since it's just for one day. Every now and then I won't have what I need, but hopefully the store will.
I enjoy cropping at home, but feel like there is always work that needs to be done. I love my scraproom, but just don't get to spend enough time there. It is nice to have a great space to put my scrap stuff.

We went out to dinner every night and drank a ton of wine, watched movies, shopped, and scrapped our hearts out.

I would even do this with scrappy strangers, I would foot the bill for the rental property (we have some wonderful places in our state), but i can't find anybody that wants to do something like this. I am about ready to just do this on my own. And for me it is all about the inspiration I receive from the beauty of the location that I am seeking. I have a wonderful craft room and I am fairly productive right here at home. But I am yearning to go to beautiful and tranquil location will just give me that extra creative boost.

I haven't been to a retreat.
The last time I was at a crop was about ten years ago, back when I could literally bring all of my supplies with me in one small tote. I was still new to scrapping then.
I prefer scrapping at home because it is hard for me to choose what things to pack, and I feel limited if I can't go through all of my stash to find just what I want at that moment.

I scrap at home. I have been to a couple of small crops back in the day when it wasn't a big expense to go. I love my scrap room and scraping at home but I have NO scrappy friends and LSSs no longer exist. I see a crop listed once a year but it is so dang expensive.
Wish I could find some scrappy friends!!

I pretty much only scrap at crops and retreats.
I could scrap at home but my stuff is so disorganized it is overwhelming and distracting. When I am away I have only what I bought with me and it forces me to use the stash I brought.

Weekend crops at LSS work better for me than weekends at cabins and craft houses. I don't like packing plus I don't get much done on away weekend crops, I'm way to distracted.
I'm really really lucky to be to have the LSS weekend crop option available. The noise level can sometimes be a problem but I remind myself to relax and enjoy the creative energy and shopping. I scrapped last night and I'm going back today for a few hours. It's my summer slow time and I'm enjoying going out to crop for a few hours or a whole weekend!
I reorganized my scrap area which has made me enjoy scrapping at home again too!

I am a "social scrapper." I get more done when I am with others. I like to see what others are doing. 5 days away would be so wonderful! I've done 3 days at a hotel and also at a summer camp. Love the dedicated time away!

I don't have very much room at home to scrap, and between the kids, the husband and the cat, I don't get very much done! I love going to crops where the main purpose is to scrapbook and chat with friends who understand and love this hobby as much as I do. I would love to do a weekend retreat but most of my scrappy friends have rooms at home and see a retreat as a waste of money

I've been scrapping since 2008 and have never been to a crop or scrapped with anyone else other than my kids. Honestly, I don't know anybody else who scraps IRL. I do have an acquaintance who makes cards and has even been published several times, but we're not close enough that I would invite her or expect to be invited.

I seem to be much more productive at a retreat. I generally go to a retreat once or twice a year. There's something about the energy in the room and being surrounded by such happy, creative ladies that puts me in my happy place. I also agree that being limited to the supplies I have on hand helps with my productivity. I save so much time not being able to shop my entire stash at home. However I also put quite a bit of time and effort into planning pages before I go and I'm sure that also plays a big role in being able to get so much done. It's also nice to have company with folks who like to scrap as much as I do!

I stepped out of my comfort zone, I'm really shy inside. One friend came in the store and we talked a little bit. She said she would like to crop sometime. I told her to go home and get her stuff, come back and sit with me. She did and we've been best friends since. The other friend bought the LSS and we really hit it off. She sold the LSS and it's not around anymore. We have been best friends for over 10 years. We used to do the large group retreats and then started doing our own retreats. This is the most fun for us. I learned a valuable lesson - I had to seek out scrappy friends. I know you may not have an LSS, but I urge you to seek out people in your area to crop with. You might just make lifelong friends.

My SIL and I go to a few crops every year - the same ones. One benefits the local rape crisis center and one benefits the Firefighters Burned Childrens Fund. We're adding a two day crop this year coming up in August with Raintree Crop. She and I only live an hour apart and this crop is right between the both of us. It's an over night that starts at 8:30 AM on Friday and ends at 9 PM the next night at a hotel. I can't wait. She and I also get together quite a few times during the year at each others house for a whole weekend. We cook, we drink, we scrap...it's an awesome time. So I guess to answer the original question, I like them both equally. I like the excitement of packing up and planning for a crop...and I like being home in my own scrap space with all my stuff RIGHT THERE. LOL

I have a fairly large group of scrappy friends that I met about 10 years ago. My scrappy bff started the group and organizes day crops at her house as well as weekend crops 2-3 times a year. We don't all go to all of them, obviously, but we do get together as often as we can! One is at a scrappy retreat house where we divide up the meals, bring adult beverages, and have a blast. That one is very affordable. We go to hotel weekends too, which are much more "luxurious" but they are getting too pricey. I used to only scrap at these retreats, but now that I am retired, I am trying to do more at home. I do feel a little guilty about spending the $$ to go to a weekend, but it is just so fun, and the hubs doesn't seem to mind.

Guess I'm one of the few that prefers at home scrapping. I like having all my stuff available. I've gone to a getaway crop and some all day ones but no matter how hard I try to do page packets I always need that one more thing to make it complete. Plus there's the packing and (yuck) the unpacking and putting away.
I'm one of the lucky ones who still has an LSS nearby that has evening crops and even some all day ones on weekends. Reading this thread has made me think about going to one of these just to meet some other people who share my interest.

Packing and having to limit what I can take to a crop isn't my thjng. I would rather be home and work because I feel I would get more done that way.

Although I sometimes miss not having my home supplies with me when I'm at a crop/retreat, I pack enough in my individual kits, plus a little extra, to finish pages. If I don't have what I think I need for a layout, I just set it aside and add what was missing at home. I'm just glad to be out with other like-minded people, and my BFF scrapping buddy! For the most part I've been pleased with my cropping experiences. I have a retreat at a scrapping cabin scheduled in Nov, plus several more weekend crops in the coming months. I'm having a ball!
On the other hand, I adore my quiet scrap studio where I'm free to listen to whatever music I want (or not) and can fully concentrate on what I'm creating. I appreciate being able to leave out an unfinished project and come back to it and being surrounded by all my scrappy goodness. I can get lost in my own little world. I love it!

I used to go to regular long weekend crops at an LSS and that was the only time I really cropped, I have hardly done anything since the last one I went to there a year ago (the LSS closed) At home I don't have a space, so I have to clear it all up before we can eat a meal.
I need to either clear a space at home to really crop (dd's room is calling my name....) or find a new group at another lss nearby.

I like both equally. Scrapping at home will be better once my stuff is all put away. It's nice being where all my stuff is, but not so much when you don't know what box it's in! When I finally get everything organized I'll be able to host some crops for my scrapping friends here, so hopefully it won't take too much longer.
I like going to retreats for the social aspects and also because most of the ones I go to have a nonprofit fundraising aspect to them so I feel good about the money I'm spending to be there.

Scrapping at home has it's advantages, since I have all my stash available, but I rarely crop at home. I tend to feel guilty that other things aren't getting done while I scrap, or I get sidetracked online (like now).
I mostly scrap with a few friends at the library. We reserve a small meeting room there at no charge, and it's pretty laid back. The downside is that if you forget to bring something you need, you are too far away from retrieving it. The LSS used to be 7 minutes from my house. That's where we used to scrap.
I personally prefer to scrap at home. I get more done once I get started. However, it's fun scrapping with my friends, and I don't really have a place for us to scrap in my small house.

I resisted crops for years out of fear of trying to pack up my stuff. I like to scrap at home, esp now that I have a designated room, but I am one of those have to finish chores before I can play types.
So I found a church group that crops once a month, and it's a huge table, you just bring a food item. I go to this about 5 times a year and I like that its designated time for me to scrap, surrounded by like-minds. Some people knit, some people bring their laptops and digi scrap or write. I usually get a lot done. One time I just took my Silhouette and did a bunch of cuts. It's great.
So both!

I enjoy doing both. I usually go every few months to a friend's clubhouse to meet with a few friends and have a great time. I get several pages done. I'm scheduled to go for an in-town weekend retreat in September at a hotel. And I do scrapbook at home, but I don't get as much done.

I also do both. I go yearly to the Santa Clara Expo where I crop with a group of friends, and then a retreat in November in a cabin. LOVE both of them.
Expo, lots of shopping and love getting together with my 'scrappy' friends, some who have moved out of the area. No worries about underpacking, as we can usually buy what we forget.
The cabin is a good time to relax (the rule at the cabin is no bras, and many of us will stay in our pj's too). But at cabin, esp limited to what I pack, and find I usually work better if I get pages started and do most of my embellishing at home.
Home - do love having access to my materials. But rarely can have a day set aside to spend in my room. Was going to last Sunday after church, but it got 'waylaid'. siiiigh.
