Do you mean show leadership to the American people or to the other countries who may be involved in this incident? To the American people. And as the facts are revealed, lead appropriately. And I'm still not clear. What does Obama need to lead the American people through? Or take any kind of lead in this disaster?

If, and that's a HUGE if, Putin is responsible in some form - the world wide implications are huge.

Wow. It makes you wonder even more about the previous missing Malaysian aircraft. Shooting down a random plane flying overhead makes even less sense that most crazy terrorist attacks. What a tragic development. We had that conversation today. Seems plausible.

I just fail to see how you think Obama can/should be using this as a leadership opportunity. Let me repeat myself, then I'll bow out for a while. I'm not trying to be difficult. Or confusing. Although I'm clearly being confusing. I'm looking for discussion. Not arguing. I have no motive here. Likely terror activity today. Not on American soil. Americans on board. Who is providing those terrorists with their weapons? Russia is a power house. I'm NOT suggesting we involve ourselves in the whole Russia/Ukraine issue. I'll check back in later. I've got to go meet the carpet guys at the new house. Be gentle. I told you that I'm not a strong world issues speaker.

That is pure speculation on your part.........careless talk costs lives.
I'm with the others on this thread....what exactly are you expecting your President to do.
_-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What a terrible thing to happen. I can't understand,if it was the pro-russian separatist ,why targeted a Malaysian plane? I haven't read anything about any involvement by Malaysia either for or against the separatists or Ukraine. As far as I know they haven't sided with anyone. There again the separatist have denied liability. Not that that would be taken as gospel!
This is pure speculation.....was it hit by mistake? There's been two Ukraine military helicopters shot down during the last two months and then the military transport plane the other day. Makes you wonder if it was in the wrong place at the wrong time or that the missile went off course and it was intended for something else.

There is a report out now that Putin's plane, which is similar in size, structure and coloring was on that same path in the same place less than 1 hour prior. But it is now being denied because they state that he would never have flown over Ukraine airspace.... But I think it makes the most sense.

Fox News reporting that the United States confirmed that air to surface missile took down the airliner and the black boxes are on their way to Russia. Now we will never know the entire truth.

Since large airplanes almost never just fall out of the sky, midflight, it is impossible for the media not to speculate. It was the first thing I said when DH said a plane had gone down over the Ukraine... getting shot down was the most logical option....but whose brilliant idea was it to route a commercial airliner over an active war zone anyway?

It seems that there were several British people on the plane. No clear details yet.

21:58: There were 154 Dutch passengers on board the plane, says Huib Gorter from Malaysian Airlines. Also 27 Australians, 23 Malaysians, 11 from Indonesia, six from the UK, four Germans, four Belgians, three from the Philippines and one Canadian. More nationalities have yet to be counted.
List just given by Malaysian airlines

No matter how it happened and who did it the fact remains that there will be many families grieving over their loss today. It's just so sad.

295 people died today. 154 of my country. I cannot believe it. The plane was possibly shot down by pro-Russian separatists. Apparently they have a voice recording of a leader of the group calling a Russian intelligence officer. The Russian asked where the weapens are. The answer? There are no weapons. Russian president Putin has expressed his condoleances. Whatever.

Terrible, terrible news.
I feel very disturbed by it - i just checked our itinerary from when we visited Norway a year ago, because we travelled on Malaysia Air, and went through Amsterdam. Sure enough, our itinerary included:
Thursday 1-Mar 12:00 depart Amsterdam Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17
Friday 2-Mar 6:45 arrive Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17
Very scary.

The Russian President also said "{the} airplane disaster would not have happened if Kiev had not renewed military operation against rebels in east Ukraine" and "Kiev bears responsibility for crash of passenger plane because it was brought down in Ukraine." He is an evil man.

"It's the second one this week? Evidently a cargo plane was shot down on Monday around the same area of the border."
I think this was the 3rd plane that went down this week.
"Meet with the families? Not sure why. If my family were killed in a foreign plane on foreign soil, the last thing I would expect or want would be a visit from the President."
My DH and I were just talking about this. I would not want the president to visit me.

Juliet - I'm so sorry for your loss, and the loss of lives of the other 153 Dutch citizens. It is a tragedy for all nations who had citizens on board and it distresses me to hear the blame game that's going on. We will likely discover this was an horrific, but accidental, mistake on the part of someone who didn't have a clue what they were shooting at, but to hear the different factions saying they had nothing to do with it, it was the other guy's fault, is just disgusting.

I'm in Melbourne and we have an International AIDS conference here next week. The news here is saying this plane was headed to Australia with a number of AIDS experts on board who were going to the conference. From the conference website: linkSo tragic for everyone involved.

Such horrible news to wake up to this morning. Before the plane was confirmed as being shot down the footage on our morning news included what looked like a missile among the debris. A number of people noticed it so the Breakfast show put up the clip again and it certainly looked like a missile, however it was still intact.
I'm surprised commercial airlines were still flying there; they knew planes had been shot down recently and that the pro-Russian supporters had missiles that could fire that high. While it may have been an 'accident' that whoever shot it down didn't realise they were shooting a commercial plane, there has to be some questions as to why the plane was even flying there.
My heart goes out to the families.

Sad twist of fate when a steward swapped out to fly on flight 17. His wife, also a fight attendant, swapped out to avoid being on MH370 that disappeared. link
