Everytime I go into my scraproom to try to get anything done, I get frustrated and walk back out. Last year I very carefully organized all my buttons, brads, eyelets, Prima flowers, etc., by color but each in their own organizer. I'm now thinking that maybe I should put all the embellishments together by color and not type. What works for you and why? Have you started out one way and then found another way worked better for you? I'm trying to avoid buying any more containers, boxes, baskets or bins, but if you have a product suggestion or two, I can be pursuaded.

I organise by type, then by colour. Which means all buttons in one place, all wood veneer, all everything. The only thing I don't do by type/colour is paper, because I don't think about paper that way. When I'm scrapping I think mood and company, so I go to that. Then for embellishments I think type and colour. "I need a blue enamel dot there" or "I need a yellow button". That's how I go and find stuff so that's how I have to have it organised.

The way I have them sorted is, well, not great LOL but I can say with certainty that the best thing I ever did for my embellishments was to buy two bead trays at Michaels. The lids latch on securely, and there are grooves inside the lid over each compartment to keep the contents from shifting if you travel with it. I got these because I do travel, once a year I fly to a retreat, and (at times ) go to monthly crops. I needed a solution that wouldn't have my trying to figure out what to do with all this tiny stuff every time I went to leave the house. I cannot do little containers within bigger containers-that's just maddening to my brain-such a time suck, and then if just once your fingers slip and you've got a case full of little whatevers all over... nope! No matter where I am, I cannot tell you how easy it is to pull out ONE tray that has everything I need. (I divided my stuff into a tray for things I love the most and use a lot, and things I rarely use and am not even sure why I'm hanging on to. LOL ) It's not a flip-top, the top comes off, and it has 4 latches that come up from the bottom so nothing is going to push it open. The compartments are rounded on the bottom so it's not hard to get small stuff out of the bottoms. I think they were $20 and I used coupons. Worth EVERY penny.

I have lots of ways to store them: wood veneers are in iris boxes, flowers are in a huge storage piece from Hobby Lobby, but my favorite is my embellishment center. It is now almost full but here is an older photo and a link to details. Embellishment Center

You really need to think about your scrap process. I would never be able to find anything if my embellishments were organized by color. I tend to scrap with collections so I keep all small embellishments from one collection in a stampin up stamp container. Generic embellishments like clips, wood veneers, flair are separated into their own containers.
I am in the process of reorganizing my scraproom because I was in the same boat you are. I spent more time looking for things than I did scrapping and it was a huge time suck. I wanted to be able to walk into my room and be able to scrap immediately. I spent quite a bit of time thinking about storage options. I am super happy with my plan and hopefully it will all be finished in a month or two.

I organize mostly by color…all blue embellishments together, all yellow together, etc. I like being able to pull out just one container and seeing everything I have of one particular color.

I have those square baskets that fold up with handles on them. I have 2. One for holidays/events other is misc. it's not the best way but it works for now. I just got a peg board I plan on spray painting and putting up for embellishments as well.

I keep everything in original package until I've used some of it, then sort by color. I store them in small 5 drawer organizers, stored at the back of my desk (which is against a wall). One drawer for red, one for orange, etc. I have a total of 3 organizers, so 15 drawers. I used to have them on a shelf by my desk, but it was a pain getting up and getting what I needed.

I do have a few themed items - dog, travel, Christmas.

I also could NEVER organize by colour. I absolutely LOVE the CTMH medium and large see thru storage containers with handles. I store all my embellishments in there except for bling and metal. There is no rhyme or reason to how I store them, just put everything in and go thru them quickly while scrapping. Same thing with die cuts. Like glitter girl, they are all in a container (she uses a large bowl) and I just rummage through it as I'm scrapping.

You really need to think about your scrap process. This!! The best advice I've been given is to create a layout or two and pay attention to how you scrap. Like aerynkelly I tend to go by mood for my papers, at least initially. But for all other items, I tend to know I want a flair, a circle, a heart, a 3x4 card, a butterfly, a flower, a rhinestone, a label, a... so organizing by color didn't make sense for me. Mine are by type. Buttons and brads are further broken into color, but everything else is generally just together.

What I do is sort by type and then by color, using divided ArtBin clear acrylic bead boxes with slide off lids to put most of my little stuff in. Each one has about 25 compartments. I use those round clear stackable screw together bead things for my basic small brads though because I have those in bigger quantities. I could never just throw all of my like colored assorted items together, I'd be looking for a week just to find anything! That would be way too chaotic for me. I spend too much time looking for stuff as it is.
When I'm looking for something, I first think of what type of item I want and the color is secondary. Patterned paper is sorted mostly by manufacturer or by type, I think of paper in terms of manufacturer so that makes the most sense for me. The only things I have sorted by color are solid cardstock and ribbons or trim.

Like pp's said, it all depends on how you scrap.
I scrap a lot of theme pages, so most of my stash is organized that way in Iris boxes. When I'm doing a beach or Christmas page, I simply grab that box and everything I need is in there.
Even though I'm all about color when I'm doing my pages, I still organize my embellishments by type. If I need a piece of red ribbon, a red brad won't do, kwim? Same thing w/creating a title - all my alphas are stored together.
But this system probably only makes sense to me. Figure out how you scrap and that will guide your organization.

I was lucky enough to score a 60 drawer card catalog. You would think that would be enough to hold my embellies but nooooo. I still have several Jetmax cubes, a closet, and table height cupboards to hold more embellies.

My embellishments are all over the place, but it works for me.
Brads are on cork board in frames. I still need to hang them on my wall. Buttons are in jars by color. Chipboard alphas sorted by letter, in jewelry bags, hanging on pegs. Chipboard shapes sorted by shape/color in jewelry bags, in a basket. Eyelets, wood veneer, sequins, paper clips, and solid colored brads in small magnetic containers on a magnet board. Ribbon, spools are in a large glass container. Washi tape, in a large glass container. Frames are in a large basket. Rub ons are in a basket. Alpha sheets are in an Iris box. Flair is in a divided plastic container. Stickers and enamel dots are in an Iris box.

I sort mainly by type eg buttons and felt in boxes and most other things on my clip it up. Then it's easy to flip through and pull out a few options.

My organization is all over the place. For the most part though, I organize by theme. But for things like buttons and brads, they just get thrown in a container. I tried organizing them by color but it didn't work for me. I like to dig for some reason.

I tried using drawers and keeping things organized, but this simply meant I didn't use them: out of sight/out of mind! My embellies are everywhere. I sort by type.
I use divided containers and the trays that my PL sets came in to hold small sticker sheets, cut aparts, die cuts. They stay right in front of me so I can see them.
I have a basket holding 12x12 and 6x12 sticker sheets beside me
My brads, enamel dots, mists, roller date stamps all have an open basket, nearby
Only thing truly put away is my wood veneers, buttons, small loose stuff - it's in snap top divided plastic containers, and gets less use than it should because it isn't out in front of me!

I definitely agree with the others who say it depends on how you scrap and think to look for something. If you're not sure, sit down and make a page and take some notes. Did you need something small here? Or did you think I need a brad here? It will help you think how to sort and organize things.
I've changed it around through the years. I used to keep things by type and then further sorted by color. So my bling is in a little binder, sorted in rainbow order. My buttons are sorted in plastic divided compartments, by color. My flowers used to be all thrown in a basket.
Now I still have my bling (and now I've added enamel dots into the mix) sorted in the binders by color bc it was working for me. When I scrap, I think, "Oh, I need something sparkly here." and go straight to my bling binder. BUT other stuff was NOT working sorted individually and I wasn't using stuff bc I forgot I had it. So I went through it all and sorted it by color. I cut apart embellies that were on cards and sorted them into the mix, etc. Now I think I need something right here on a page, and I pull out the color drawers that might work and search for something that way.
I still have my washi separate bc that works for me. But all the flowers and random flair, etc. Is now sorted by color in those drawers.

I I crop away from home a lot, so almost all my storage has to be portable. I organize by color and also by type. Most of my storage pieces are divided plastic containers. This works well for me as I tend to think/scrap by color. Always looking for a more efficient/better way!

Thank you for these great ideas and thoughts. It's made me rethink my whole scrapping process and pay more attention what to look for when I'm looking for an embellishment; if it's by color or by type.
I was in my room last week wanting to do a small home decor project. I have a small wreath that I wanted to cover in ribbon and then pin buttons, flowers and beads on it to hang in my family room. The only thing I could readily put my hands on were the pins. Which were in a different room to begin with.

I have things collected by type: ie. -Baby girl album embellies -Baby boy album embellies -enamel dots -journaling cards -wood veneers -thickers -brads -buttons -ribbon -washi tape
etc, etc. I tried by color once, but not everything fits into a nice color "box", if you will, so I found that putting like things together was better for me.

If it is a small item (brads, veneers, etc.), stored by type and then color.
Larger embellishments are by type, I think I honestly have about three categories: beach, sports, and everything else. I tend to make my own embellishments, so I really don't have a lot of premade stuff. So dies are by far the largest amount of craft items I store.

I go by type then color unless there is a very clear theme like Xmas. I have whittled my supplies down over the last few years and don't have a ton of stuff so organizing isn't too difficult.

I organize by theme. I have the sterlite drawers and I have a drawer or two per theme. When I'm working on something, I pull the drawer out that goes with that theme. I also store themed paper in there as well.

I organize by theme/season and color. The important thing to do is to identify how you look for things. If you think "I need my beach supplies" first, then organize by theme. If you think "I need my teal buttons" then organize by color. Or - you might be like me, and need to do both!
