Oh HELL no. I have tolerated an awful lot on this subject, because in general the community figures out for itself what is acceptable and what is not, but this is too much. I certainly hope Elannah is alive and well, but as of now she is not here. Thank you to those who quoted the OP, so that I can state as clearly as possible that it is entirely untrue. Given all the info I have available, I am quite certain that Dewryce and mrsovy are not Elannah. I also have zero evidence that Elannah is posting under any other username.
And after I finish this post, any other IDs Bellatrix has will be gone too. I should probably have done the same for whoever created an alter to out Scrappower's fake picture too, but as that info seemed to be true I let it slide. Not any more - from now on anyone who creates an alter for the sole purpose of attacking another member will be banned. This makes me a bit uncomfortable to be honest. From what I saw this poster was essentially bullied off the board for her comments. If she did decide to continue to participate in discussions under a new username why is it any of our business? I would think admin would have to keep that information to themselves and not announce to her bullies that she was or was not using an new name. I do agree with banning people creating alter IDs to attack people though.

For the record. I am not Bellatrix. Can't stand her. But... you're her cousin. And it's because of YOU she's out of Azkaban. So there's that.

Actually, I have a friend from Pakistan whose name is "Shaista." Not uncommon at all.
And dayum the middle schoolers sure came in to play over this whole Elannah debacle. Yowza.

If the banning gets heavy handed, I'd be annoyed. I don't know if admin is going to start doing that, because she never has before, but her comments about 'should have banned the person who outed scrapppower' kind of make me wonder. Scrappower was a dominant and popular member of this board. I personally don't blame whoever made up an ID to out her for not using their own name. That was a sticky situation. Just my opinion. It's a slippery slope.

I'm even more confused now, but that's my fault for never watching Harry Potter! However, I am very relieved to hear that Shasta the pony was rescued from the fairground :-)

Any banning would surely be a matter between the admin team and the individual concerned and would presumably follow a series of warnings or an outrageous and extraordinarily unacceptable piece of conduct. It would be the business of no-one else, and would be unlikely to come out into the public domain. As I said elsewhere, we can't have it all ways. You either have a heavy handed moderating style, where all so called 'piles ons' and arguments are airbrushed out, and everyone holds hands and sings Kumbya while farting rose petals, or we have a forum where full and frank exchanges of view are not stifled.

It's a slippery slope. I could not disagree more. If you (general you) don't have the balls to say something under your own ID, you (again, general you) shouldn't be posting it! I'm only talking about call out type posts, not creating an alter to ask for advice on a personal situation.

A much better option is just to contact the board admin with suspicions/proof. The board admin can check for verification on certain things, and then decide on how she wants to handle things: quietly or through a public announcement, and any other actions she thinks are necessary. When people need to be "outed" publicly on a board, it's usually best if that is done by admin and not another board member.

I prefer to think of admin as a benevolent dictator. (ETA: It appears I may have been misunderstood. I LIKE having a benevolent dictator. )

I disagree that these are the only two options. A middle ground is possible where nasty pile-ons with name-calling and personal attacks are not allowed, but respectful disagreements that focus on issues are allowed. It takes a lot of effort to get a board to a place where that is possible, but it can be done. It does take some heavy-handed moderation at first, but only toward those who can't manage to leave the name-calling and attacks behind. When you remove their posts consistently, they either learn to follow the rules, stop posting in those types of threads, or leave the board. In all three cases, the board conflict is gone, and respectful disagreement can continue. I've even had some former troublemakers who changed their ways contact me later to thank me for enforcing those boundaries. It helped them realize they had some unresolved personal issues that they finally realized they needed help with. They eventually returned, changed their posting habits, and became valuable board members.

However, I agree with you that a middle ground is achievable. It would take some doing though, with a forum as diverse and large as this one. I moderate a forum elsewhere, and we pretty much do what you have described. However, there is constant carping about it, even though moderating decisions are made by a team, after consideration, and not as a knee jerk reaction by one moderator. You would not believe the spiteful and bile ridden messages we get in our in boxes whenever a moderating action takes place. For a forum to be run along the lines you describe, Admin would need a whole team to support her, and rules would have to be spelled out clearly. Even then, people would object. I would bet my boots on that.

When people need to be "outed" publicly on a board, it's usually best if that is done by admin and not another board member. Should it be handled that way? Absolutely. But will it be? Highly doubtful. Some of us enjoy the "gotcha" moment too much. I'd imagine there are some of us positively salivating at the thought of being the first to spy if Elannah comes back and be able to say "Ta-Da" and pat themselves on the back. There are probably some who are mighty curious about some of the anonymous new members who are clearly alters asking for help. Depending on the motivation and intent, and how it's handled, I believe that so-called Pea Detectives can provide a much needed service in protecting our community from trolls and two-faced individuals. Admin is a very busy Pea and things are going to slip past her at times. That's not a slight, more of a strong probability. This site can't be easy to run. And because we love it here and are grateful for what she's done, we should police ourselves like grown adults. Clearly she and I will not agree here, but I do think we should be made aware of when we are being fooled or played with. I'm not saying people who've been "run off" for non-nefarious reasons should be outed, just the trouble-makers. There's a gray area open to interpretation there though which I can see being problematic. And I too would be interested to hear how an admin keeps track of people and IPs. It doesn't seem to me it would be that difficult to just go to the library or hit up free wi-fi at various places to avoid using a known IP. Also, my router keeps randomly changing our IP as if it's possessed. It seems like these factors would make her job more difficult. Admin seems nice and dedicated. We don't want that to change into overbearing as I've seen on other boards. I'm not saying we play nice all the time, it wouldn't be the Peas otherwise. I think it's how we handle those occasions that will make or break us here.

Shasta is also an amazing mountain in California. I have known a few Shastas and never assumed they were named after the soda. I've been to Mt. Shasta (quite a few years ago), and I agree, it IS beautiful. Coincidentally, I was just looking at my CA trip scrapbook yesterday and was reminded how much I loved the pages I did about Mt. Shasta. Never knew a person named Shasta, though.

I spent March out there visiting her and there were a ton of places with Shasta in the name. Mt. Shasta, Shasta County, Lake Shasta, Shasta Lake, Shasta everything pretty much. I told her I am just going to call her area Shastaland.

I am not going to get involved in this or any other post about Elannah. She is a good friend of mine but it is not my place to tell her story. I do not believe that she is currently posting on refupeas. People need good friends like you. ( said honestly with no snark or sarcasm) .... But isn't it sad that I feel the need to add that info?

Cheeto? That's about as funny as when I changed my name to "Bunny" in 3rd grade. Teacher was not amused. I asked to be called Minx this week. No one in my "real" life got it. I do! Or would you rather Slutty Ann, lol.

While you've probably heard the slogan of the 125-year-old soft drink manufacturer -- born on the base of Mt. Shasta, California..."
So I guess if someone was named after the soda which was named after the mountain, they're really named after the mountain!

Who names a kid Shasta? How's that for derailment? *smooches* admin. No joke, totally telling the truth, I went to high school with a girl named Shasta! Did you grow up in Virginia? I'm sorry about your horse @happymomma, but a, glad your Shasta got a happy ending! Thank you for the support ladies. And admin for clearing things up. Glad to know I won't have that veil of doubt following me around.

How about any alters that are already in place for the sole purpose of attacking others? And I don't think it should be done quietly by you. I think it should be announced who that alter is connected to. If people know that's going to happen to them, they won't be so quick to hide behind an alter to be nasty. They'll either be forced to own their words or they won't say them.

Shasta is also an amazing mountain in California. I have known a few Shastas and never assumed they were named after the soda. I have a scary Mt Shasta story. Want to hear it? Ok here it goes. As a kid, my family used to drive from L.A. to Oregon via I5 every summer. My dad always wanted to drive straight through. We were driving through/ over Mt Shasta late at night. All of a sudden, a lady jumped from the southbound side to the northbound side of the freeway. She had long white hair, and looked like she was wearing a hospital gown and no shoes. We all screamed, my dad slammed his breaks and missed the lady. She didn't stop, and disappeared into the woods. Who knows where the hell she was coming from, or why she was running? It scared the crap out of us though.
