Y'all are speaking a foreign language to me with all the Harry Potter and SW stuff. I have to leave the room when dh starts watching. I can't even be bothered to hang my head in shame. Yeah well, wait till the Death Eaters and Storm Troopers arrive. You'll be sorry when you won't know how to save the world.

In addition to never seeing Star Wars or Harry Potter, I've never seen Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, or Doctor Who. Well, that last one isn't quite true. I tried Doctor Who, but in the first episode when the mannequins come to life and start chasing him, I knew the show just wasn't for me! Haha! Let's see, add Godfather, Rocky, Lord of the Rings, and Twilight. (But I don't put Twilight in the same category as the others. It's just another wildly popular one that I haven't seen.) Give me a West Wing, Office, or Friends line though, and I'll tell you which episode it came from! I should just back away slowly and leave this place forever. I fear for my safety after admitting all this!

Breaking Bad was so well done. When it ended it was like the ending to a great book you'd been reading. You can't wait to find out how it ends, but you're so sad that it did.

Elanna had such a unique personality that I always knew it was her posting. Even if she comes back under a new name I think we'll recognize her.
I also have not seen: Harry Potters (nor read books), Lord of the Rings, Breaking Bad, Gilmore Girls, did not read any of the Twilight books (did see the 1st movie) or 50 Shades of Grey (book or movie).

Traditionally, this is not what the peas have wanted. However, I agree with you that a middle ground is achievable. It would take some doing though, with a forum as diverse and large as this one. I moderate a forum elsewhere, and we pretty much do what you have described. However, there is constant carping about it, even though moderating decisions are made by a team, after consideration, and not as a knee jerk reaction by one moderator. You would not believe the spiteful and bile ridden messages we get in our in boxes whenever a moderating action takes place. For a forum to be run along the lines you describe, Admin would need a whole team to support her, and rules would have to be spelled out clearly. Even then, people would object. I would bet my boots on that. You made me laugh, in a good way. I can definitely relate to your spiteful and bile-ridden messages, having received quite a few of them myself! It doesn't have to take a team to make a board work that way. My business partner and I did it with just the two of us. I do think that HERE it might take a team of moderators, at least in the beginning. It took us 4 months of dealing with intense push-back and a group of people creating all sorts of shenanigans that I had to stomp down, followed by another 6-8 months of less intense push-back. Now the site runs smoothly pretty much by itself. I don't have to do much moderating at all. But that's all beside the point, because I don't think this admin wants this site to run like mine. I think she wants to find another place along the moderation continuum.

I'm sure (sacrasm) the majority of people here would LOVE to be "stomped down" & have "intense push back"...then the 3 people left could have a grand old time discussing their latest crotchet project.
I used to belong to an active cat message board and that owner was scared of everything, you couldn't post photos because she might get sued for copyright infringement, if someone let their cat breed like crazy we were all expected to politely give tips on how to deliver your cat's 20th litter of kittens. A few of us were quite outspoken and yup - got banned for 30 days and then for good. Not surprisingly I was one of the first. Of course the day I got banned, I just used my iPad and continued reading (not rocket science, even if you IP is blocked, pretty easy to use your phone or iPad). I was telling this story here just a few months ago and out of interest went back and checked out the site...it was just me and a few tumbleweeds. There were threads there for a year that had like 5 responses. So the heavy moderation obviously had an effect and only a handful of people had posted there in the past year.

I don't go to my RV message board because it's so heavily moderated too. They won't even let you say you don't like <insert sport star name> in threads discussing that days sporting event. It used to be less moderated so I don't know what happened to turn it into what it is now. But it isn't even worth my time going any more as there is nothing to learn from it

No place is perfect, but this place is home I trust admin... I trust her judgement, and I trust that she would be willing to answer any questions we have about moderation and discuss options with us if we had concerns...

I go to a quilt board that's moderated into the ground. It sucks but it's the most active quilt board I know of so I suffer through it. lol. I moderate a shopping board and there are some pretty strict rules there, but there are still plenty of members posting. So it must not be too boring. It's definitely more interesting here though.

I don't think there need to be any drastic changes here. It would be possible to introduce them, but would be quite difficult to manage. I can imagine the behind the scenes exchanges if it did take place. Trouble is, you have to start off with a set of rules, not introduce them down the line. When Admin set this forum up, I am guessing that she wanted things to carry on pretty much along the lines of the Bucket?

Sometimes this place is not a good idea for certain people. Perhaps someone is not bi-polar and perhaps she is, but we need to be careful and not participate in triggering a more intense episode. I err on the side of caution, because I doubt I could live w/myself knowing that I'd driven someone to a desperate or dangerous act. If this is all a rouse then so be it, but I'm going to treat it as real, just in case. There is instability there and medical and psychiatric intervention is something that we can't provide. For her own sake I hope that she'll get the help she needs and find another resource for support. When the board is more stressful or dramatic, rather than entertaining or informative then maybe it's time to take a look elsewhere. As for the admin, I think this board is so much nicer than the old board and I really appreciate it. I'm not against the admin doing her job when it is in the best interest of the board. As for Harry Potter, freebird, I'm a mega fan of Harry Potter and would sit thru many marathons w/you. I was totally with you, right up until you dragged HP into the melee. I couldn't even get through book 1. I was forced to watch teh first movie and fell asleep in the theater.

Oh please do!! And let me know so I won't be alone in all my uncool glory. I know there were miles of entertainment out of my misnaming of the guy and at least one twitter post about dorky parents trying to learn the 'young people music.' I wish you were here so we could do The Whip together! Is it allowed? Doing the Whip without doing the Nae Nae?

Neither have I... Just one example: Somewhere around the beginning of the year there was a new log-in created the day before a well known Pea announced she was taking a break from here. She took her break and the new login participated in many threads. Several Peas were very vocal about the similarities between the two, including posting styles, identical phrases used, reactions to certain topics, similar reactions in general, professions, etc. When the well known Pea came back from her break, the new log-in stopped posting and hasn't posted since. Of course, it could all be coincidence, but that's a lot of coincidence in one place. I'm not seeing how that was an alter created to attack people. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean?

I think I suffered through a Star Wars or two, but I did watch and enjoy Breaking Bad. Does that balance the Harry Potter thing out? No. Negative 200 points to Blindsquirrel for "suffering" through Star Wars. One must watch, quote, and rewatch Star Wars with enthusiasm. Now, if you can name the television show with the following catch-words, you gain 300 points... Allonsy Geronimo Spoilers When all the hype about the new Star Wars movie first started I said to my husband 'is it really that good of a movie that they have to keep making more'?, his reaction was to point at the door and say 'I think you'd better leave' I can and have watched Doctor Who all day though!

because of this bullshit thread... I now have to go start watching HP again. From the beginning. For probably the 30th time. I'm not exaggerating. I just finished reading a fan fic for the third time. Hopeless I tell you...
One fan fic had me as gay and in love with Dumbledore! ACK!! He's SO not my type. :S
I am a bit verklempt at all the members who have never even READ HP!!! I can understand not seeing the movies (well maybe not) and will give that a pass, but not to have read the GREATEST book series ever written (and I'm only seen in books 3-5 and not seen much in 4 actually) is just as unforgivable as the Cruciatus Curse!!! Merlin's pants!!! I don't even....
DEX, you are my new BFF...

Pjaye, Weren't you also a member of Sucks if memory serves me right? That board was/still is one of the most brutal boards I've ever been a member at. Makes here look like a nunnery. I never posted much except on the big brother threads years ago - think I stopped at season 8. I still go there to read Survivor shit though.

I saw the first Harry Potter movie with my kids and was bored to death. I never saw another, relegating that movie series to my dh. My oldest son felt the same way so when the dh and three kids went to see HP, we went in another theater to see something else. I did try to read the books since we have all of them and just couldn't do it. Good thing we all have lots of choices for our movie and book enjoyment. I never got into the Twilight series either and that sure was popular too.

Yes, in the early days I did used to post there, I was "nice big yellow kitty" (after Survivor Africa when a friend was making fun of me and said that I'd probably want to pat those nice big yellow kitties...lol). That place got totally out of hand, but it was fun back then...but I just watch the show now, not into spoilers etc any more. Last time I went there it was so such a jumbled mess, I couldn't even follow what was going on.
Then there was TWOP those posts were brutal too, but they were all directed at the TV people and not other posters, however the moderation there was harsh! You could swear in posts until the air around you turned blue, but if you asked a similar question to one asked 100 pages ago they'd delete your post, or you'd get mod PMs if you accidentally forgot a capital letter somewhere. Their moderation about "how" you write was insane, considering otherwise you could say anything you wanted (as long as it was grammatically correct and you'd read the last 10 pages of any topic). They had some crazy rules, but apart from getting notes about my writing, I never got into any trouble there otherwise
