i know I am not an active member here, but I also know the power of the Peas. If anyone can help me out, it's you!
After 25 yrs together, I filed for divorce a month ago. I know I have a long road ahead of me until things are final. In the meantime, I am trying to prepare so everything doesn't hit at once. My husband will keep the house and most of the contents. That means I will have to purchase my own. Things like a vacuum, washer/dryer, toaster oven, etc, etc
Thats were you fine folks come in. Could you please tell me about the appliances you own and what you think of them? Good or bad! I won't be able to afford top of the line products, but I don't want cheap either. Don't limit yourself to the few that I've mentioned. Include whatever you can think of. Coffee maker, DustBuster, blender, small gas grill, whatever.
Thanks in advance!

I am no help in such matters, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry you are going through this, and I hope you will come out happier in the end. And please give careful thought to what you let your husband have, okay?

I'm so sorry -- that must be so hard, especially after such a long marriage. {{hugs}}
Most of my small appliances are from Costco, and I've been happy with them. Plus Costco has an excellent return policy if you don't like something. One of their big advantages is that they don't have a lot of choices - it narrows things down for me. I could spend all day on Amazon researching a $20 item.

I guess that would depend on where your're moving and what is included. If you move into an apartment, most large appliances are included, but if you are moving to a house, you might have to get a lot more.
Honestly, I would wait and buy as needed. Judging from many threads here, you'll need a Dyson, a Keurig, and a spiralizer LOL!

I have a cuisinart toaster oven, foodsaver, Capresso thermos coffee maker (that's really old), Nespresso espresso maker, and sodastream. I also have a TV, computer, car tires, and some clothes.
Ok now I'm embarrassed by my copious spending at Costco.
ETA: I got my spiralizer from Amazon, lol. I'm a sucker for single use appliances.

Smartypants71 - I'll be moving to a house. The small appliances I want to get now. He's still paying the credit card bills. ? The big things I just want to gather information, so I don't have to do it all at once later.

To be honest, it's very difficult for many of us to recommend brands of household appliances since they can change radically year to year. For instance, I love my Kitchenaid coffee maker but it's 6 years old and I can't say that this years model is as well made as mine. The same goes for my Dyson vacuum cleaner. It's at least 10 years old, maybe older, (senior brain), and still going strong. Hopefully you will get replies from others who have recently purchased items who can give you more up-to-date information.

When I got divorced, my situation was similar. I didn't take hardly any furniture (we only had crap anyway so it didn't matter). I ended up hitting garage sales all summer and started collecting everything I needed. Over time, as I could afford it, I replace everything with nicer things and donated or garage saled my old stuff. It's easier to "invest" in a blender you'll never really use if it's only $3 vs $75.

I love my Kuerig coffeemaker ($125 at Costco) but I got it on sale. I think its normally $149 but you can find cheaper versions at any Target, Walmart, etc. We had a Mr. Coffee ($50 at Walmart) that used the pods before that I liked. I have a Dyson handheld vacuum that I love for my laminate floors but they are pricy. Before that I had a Hoover upright that I liked just fine and did a good job on carpet. Our toaster oven is a Cuisinart we bought at Target for $60. Not sure how many people you will have living with you but I like the pod coffee makers and the toaster ovens for 1 or 2 people. Less waste and easy to make smaller meals without heating up your whole oven. Not so good with limited counter space. My handheld mixer, etc is all cheap stuff from Walmart/Target, mostly Hamilton Beach. It has held up well with minimal use.
My microwave/stove/refrigerator are all GE which I wouldn't recommend. We've had trouble with our ice maker from day one and are on our third microwave (it's an over the stove one and GE is the only that fits/wasn't $1,000). My dishwasher is a Maytag which I love. The stove and refrigerator are 10 years old and have held up but I feel like the quality just isn't there. The dishwasher is 3 years old.
Hope that helps.

I am sorry things cannot work out after so many years being married.

I'm sorry for what you're going through. Right now Kohls has a Keurig 2.0 K250 for as low as $69 after discounts, plus earn $10 Kohls Cash. Use that Kohls Cash for towels or something If you have a Kohls CC, use code HOME10 for $10 off $25 purchase, TURKEY30 for 30% off purchase, and SHIPMVC for free shipping.

Thanks for all the input. We currently have a Black and Decker toaster oven that I hate! I will be checking out the Cuisinart since a couple of you mentioned it. Since most of the time it will be just me, I will probably be using it quite a bit, as jenis40 said, instead of using the oven.
I'm going to need to get an iron too. We currently have a Rowenta. Should I stick with that or do you have another suggestion?

I'd highly recommend The Sweethome. It's a great unbiased review site for all times home related. Their sister site The Wirecutter is also excellent, but is more technology/electronics focused.

Kitchen appliances I use regularly: (But I still have teens) -toaster -microwave -Kitchen Aid mixer -food processor -crock pot -immersion blender -blender -hand mixer -iPad (that's a small appliance, right?)
Really, I'd just look around your kitchen, utility room, family room, bathroom, etc. Write down what you use on a regular basis and start looking at the Black Friday sale ads. If your agreement is for him to pay the CC bills, I'd probably upgrade my computer/phone/ipad/etc.

First, I am so sorry. I hope everything goes smoothly.
I just purchased, over the summer, Kitchen Aid range and refrigerator. I love them. I've had Kitchen Aid dishwashers for years and they are very reliable. My Kenmore washer and dryer are about 15 years old with only one small repair, so far.
I bought my Keurig and crockpot at Costco. I agree with the others - great return policies. They have nice sheets and towels, too.
I bought my Dyson vacuum at Kohl's with a 30% off coupon. I am very happy with it.

if you are living by yourself, you will probably want a toaster, a coffee maker if you are a coffee drinker her, and electric skillet is very handy. Seriously, since I don't know how you cook or who you're cooking for it's kind of difficult to make recommendations. I would avoid buying a lot of stuff that will just sit and cupboards, so think about what you use and how you use it and what you really would be lost without.
I divorced after 35 years of marriage. It was tough, but I got through it and I live differently now than I did when I was married. There are not a lot of appliances that I use on a regular basis.

So sorry. On a practical note though, I encourage you to talk to a couple of local repair shops. Ask them what they see most of and what they themselves would buy. We have a Fischer/Paykel washer & dryer. Had to have it repaired one time in 15 years - the repair man had never even heard of them cause he'd never seen one in his shop. Hope that is helpful.

I have been very happy with my Breville items. I have the large convection toaster/oven, their coffee maker that uses the Keurig cups, and juicer.
I really like my Rowenta iron and would stick to that brand if I had to replace it.
Costco does seem to carry the most popular brands of appliances. I'm a researcher when it comes to buying things. I can frequently find the top, popular brand items on Costo's shelves and have begun to accept if they carry it, it is bound to be a good one. I have picked up a small appliance there and then gone home to research before I open it, and have never discovered anything negative that made me return the item.
You might want to consider a Vitamix, and I bought a set of pots and pans from a traveling demonstrator at Costco and I love them! I can't remember the brand, but will check for you if you need to replace pots and pans too.
I can recommend the a espresso machine by Nespresso too if you are an espresso drinker. I usually put that out when entertaining and people seem to really enjoy an espresso after dinner.
I am a small appliance addict. I have a Foodsaver, a dehydrator, a panini maker, a Cuisanart Pro food processor, etc. My parents used to give us each a kitchen appliance of some type every year for Christmas from the time we turned 13 to start building our hope chest. That began my appliance addiction. My current boarder recently stood in front of my appliance shelves in my garage and said he "wanted to be me when he grew up" because he was so impressed with my kitchen stuff. The fact that he is a man and ten years older than I am made it pretty funny. And, the man doesn't even cook! He orders from restaurants every night.
It would be really helpful if you listed the types of appliances and we could recommend a brand for you.
And I am very sorry that you are in this position after 25 years. That has to be difficult.

Washer/dryer
I may need other things, but that's all I can think of right now.
i appreciate everyone's input, even if all you have to say is, "Don't buy _____! It's total cr@p!"

I just bought a Shark liftaway canister vac at costco. It was $200, but I'm told that they have coupons for them a couple times per year that brings it down to $150. I couldn't wait for a coupon, so I just bought it full price. When my sisters vacuum died, she borrowed several different vacuum types from friends, and we tested all of them on her floor. We both liked the shark better than any of the other ones. (Including the dyson!)I like it because the canister comes off, which makes it super easy to take out to use in the car or do the stairs.

Washer - Dryer ... We went through several $$$ front loader machines that only lasted 3-5 years. We were fed up w/spending $$$ on appliances that didn't last, so we opted again for a Speed Queen set. I swear by that brand, even though it doesn't have the bells & whistles like most.
I would rather have a durable set w/fewer bells & whistles than a set that will only last 3-5 years. Speed Queen is the company that makes the commercial sets for laundromats.

Lol I don't think that would go over too well. ? Just a word of caution-- you may still be on the hook for those small purchases. He might be paying the CC bill now to keep it out of arrears, but when it comes time to divide up the assets and liabilities, he might be able to say "I stopped using that card as soon as she filed-- I am not paying amounts after the filing date." And he might win that argument, especially if you really are "sneaking" them in rather than being tongue in cheek about it. Maybe you're okay with that, if you have to pay for them later, and maybe he's okay with you using the card now. I don't know. But I didn't want you to be caught unaware. Having said that, the only small appliances I use with any regularity are my keurig (and that's mostly just to heat water), my crock pot (whatever one was on sale for $15), my toaster, and my space heater (which I just use in the bathroom in the winter, since the room's not hooked up to the heating system).

I would want my 4 in 1 slow cooker, a RefuPea recommendation. It cleans easily and I use it to sauté or steam small amounts. It's versatile too.
Caveat- I am not divorced. But I thought I might be last year. And at the time I happened to meet a slightly older woman who had to flee her marriage. She was living with basics. It really made me think about the future and what was needed. Personally, I used to be more minimalist and the idea of returning to that became appealing.
I think in my case I'd hold on to as much cash as possible and acquire "things" later if I decided I needed them. A new life might mean new lifestyle.
I'd check Consumer Reports for this year's vacuum recommendation. I bought my boring Hoover wind tunnel that way and love it. It was their top rated at the time, one third the price of a Dyson and arrived the next day via Amazon. I don't think you can go wrong with a cuisinart food processor or kitchen aid mixer, they're work horses.
