I went to high school with a Candy Cane and her sister, who had a real first name but everyone, even teachers, called Sugar.
My sister went through school with Kelly Green, and her older brother Hunter Green.
In DD's preschool, but not her class, there was a kid named something like Majestic Dynasty and the mom FLIPPED OUT when after 2 weeks, the teachers and kids started calling her only Majestic.

I know a woman in California who's kids are Brooklyn and Hudson. She cannot for the life of her figure out why everyone asks if she's from NYC.
I like Journey! (AS a name, I'm ambivalent about the band.)

I used to work at a very large church and one of my jobs was checking kids into children's church. Some of the names just defied logic. Attikus, Cotton, Journey... just to name a few. Yikes! I can't speak to the other names, but Cotton is a legitimate, very old-fashioned name. I've known both men and women named Cotton. Interestingly, they are all southern, so it might be a regional thing. That's cool. I didn't know that!

Cotton Mather is a famous Puritan preacher from the late 1600s. You probably read some of his stuff in 10th grade American Lit in high school. And it's also an old fashioned Southern name as well.

When I was a child, our neighbour, who was ancient, or so I thought at the time, was called Olive Green. Mind you, it was her married name. Her parents hadn't saddled her with it. It was a source of great amusement in the neighbourhood. I came across a family of Greens where all the kids were given "green" first names. It was about 12 years ago, now, so I don't know if I can remember all of them, but I know there was a Kelly, a Jade, & a Hunter. I can't recall if there really was a Sage or if that name just floated through my head as a possibility for them in the future. I think there were 4 kids. So either I am forgetting someone, or there was a Sage.

Yep they named their girls Jacqueline and Danielle because of jack Daniels. I just thought it was a little strange to be inspired by whisky. But I agree the names are normal and pretty. My first thought was they were named after authors Jacqueline Susann and Danielle Steel.

I certainly DO NOT flip out when people shorten my kids' names, but if I named them something and want them to be called something, and that's their name, and that's what they go by, what's wrong with asking people to respect that?

I have a cousin named Diamond. It's a guy. This one made me snort Don't work or spend time around many kids so I haven't seen any creative spellings but I do know a 12-yo girl named Tequila. Her mom's name is Margarita, which is a common Spanish name, so I guess she thought they could have "related" names? I feel bad for the poor girl because it looks like both she and her mom are embarrassed about her name now.

In a store yesterday, a teenage clerk's nametag said Nautica. After I commented on her unusual/pretty name, she said her parents chose brand names for her & her siblings. Her middle name is Lauren (as in Ralph Lauren); her college-aged brother is named Hugo Boss, but his friends call him "Boss;" & her little sister is Prada Gucci & they call her "PG." She laughed & said her parents were trying to be different, since all her cousins are named after car manufacturers. Her name likely has started many conversations & made her a personable young adult! Either that or she's doomed to a life working retail. I must be in a mood, because these names are downright PISSING ME OFF. What in the hell are people thinking?

Because that was the FIRST conversation that woman had ever had with the school staff and her daughter's teacher. Because she was screaming at preschoolers. And because the girl had asked them to call her Majestic or Misty!
The mom flipping out was WAY over the top.
I totally get wanting your child to be called by their full name. We have a Christopher in the family who is never called Chris. He's Christopher. But if he asked us to call him Chris, we probably would.

It's been fun, and eye roll worthy, to read all these names. But at least these parents named their child something.
I had a friend years ago who didn't bother naming her kids. It amazed me because she had wanted children for years, then when she was finally able to have them she didn't even bother to pick names, she let her husband do it.
With her youngest she just went with initials - JD. When she tried to register him as that, she wasn't allowed. The department said he had to have a real name - so he became Jay Dee.
FYI - the youngest is not her husbands child, they'd split by then, so she had to find a name herself - hence the initials. Sad.
