Who says eating meat is normal for humans? That's debatable. And in many countries in Africa people eat very little meat because they just can't afford it. 40% of Indians are vegetarians so the rest of the population doesn't blink an eye if someone tells them they are vegetarian. I'm sure people with allergies are sick of them too, but what can you do about any medical condition? Follow doctors orders whether that's taking drugs or an elimination diet. Kind of strange to be annoyed with the 21 day fix, it's just people who want to lose weight and be healthy. Where is this post that you quoted, annabella and who wrote it?

Except it's quite often very true. Same with a lot of GF people, Paleo people, DF people and whatever other trendy diet is out there. The ones who are confident in their choice don't do this, but the ones that aren't and have to announce it to the world have a tendency to announce it loudly and "proudly" even when it's irrelevant to the conversation. That's like saying How do you know when you're meeting a wealthy person for the first time? Don't worry they'll tell you. Because we all know that there are a lot of wealthy people that flaunt it or look down upon those that aren't 'in their league'. But...there are many many more that aren't that way at all. So you can't lump all wealthy people together just like you can't lump all members of any 'group' all together. I'm not lumping the whole group together... I am well aware that there are vegans who aren't douchebags about it. However, I did say that it's quite often true... which means there are enough douchebags out there to make the stereotype. There is no absolute but enough to make it happen.

What bristles me is the inference that being vegan is being "perfect". It was even mentioned up thread - about being 100% perfect. There are like 42 types of vegans (well about 6 actually), which one makes you perfect?

Some GFs and Paleos do it too... and f*** me it's annoying. Because they are FAR from perfect. It's a trend for some yoga and/or crossfitter peeps as well.

I wish there were shirts that said I'm in it because it's healthy and for the tasty vegan food! (Instead of murder, eating our animal friends, etc.) How do you handle aggressive reactions to veganism? I don't really get your need to advertise your veganism on a tshirt. It's like wearing an 'I'm Gluten Free' or 'Lactose Gives me Gas' t-shirt.
this is the shirt I need to wear but I don't think I can handle the negative response to it. I'm just tryna be me!

It's just what I think the OP was doing too, being loud for her choice and to be able to lord it over people thinking that it is superior over all the rest of the choices. I got sick years ago, did not want to eat much of anything but would have been classified as a "lacto ovo vegetarian". I was that way for many, many years! (No meat, but I did dairy-eggs, milk, cheese) no big deal with it, would occasionally get asked why or teased about it, but I never made a big deal about it to begin with so I didn't get much "aggression" from anyone outside my house!

Oh wow this board deletes the name of the person quoted when the person deletes their original post. The post was on page 2 when I quoted it, can't remember her name but it was a TX pea who lost custody of her kids. Her avatar is a closeup of a baby's face wearing a hat.

Honestly, I feel like a person's beliefs or attitude about anything - whether it be about your choice in dieting, exercising, religion, politics - if they are presented in such a way that they are anything but a positive way and make it like they are putting someone else down, they don't need to be there. "joke" or not."
We tell our kids not to bully so I think we need to represent that as well.
I let my kids wear slogans such as "Just Do It" or positive sayings, but I don't think it would be anyone's best interest to wear something that made fun of people that didn't participate in sports or active things. I feel the same goes for all things to be honest, it doesn't help anyone to put anyone down, "joke" or not, no matter how "funny" someone thinks it is, keep it to yourself.

Yes, think Annabella perhaps used the quote button function after copying......there's another quote in one of her earlier posts without a name on the quote.

i think people have a different idea of what is "cute" vs "judgemental".... i had a onsey for my son that said "my mommy drinks cuz i cry". i thought it was funny... it was a 3 month size and it was a challenging time! that kid cried and threw up for 10 months straight. meanwhile, my mom bought my toddler son a t-shirt that said "next tantrum in 6, 5, 4, 3......." and i did not find that amusing AT ALL and will say i gave it away - i never put it on my son once.
dd plays ball hockey and there are some funny sayings on the hoodies.... things like "don't let the ponytail fool you". there is one that said "i work mine off to kick yours" and didn't like it. like others have said, positive verses negative or aggressive.
my bro is waiting for an NRA t-shirt his buddy is supposed to bring him from the states. he wants to wear it around to piss off the bleeding heart liberals. <-direct quote. when i asked "why?" he replied, "cuz it's fun to bait them". i flat out told him i don't understand that approach AT ALL. how odd....
(eta: i have had quoting issues... one quote was dated 2012 or something... when it was from earlier up in the thread)

Who says eating meat is normal for humans? That's debatable. Well, technically, the fact that we have eye-teeth tells us it's normal. But, then again, I guess our other vestigial features make that argument a bit less conclusive.

If you are a vegan does that mean no animal products for anything i.e. capsules that might contain gelatin? Is the philosophy and lifestyle to hurt no animal? I totally understand not wanting to consume an animal product in my diet, but I didn't know that it encompassed anything someone would own as well. You wouldn't be able to wear silk or wool then either, right? Yes, the true definition of Vegan is to cause NO animal harm whatsoever. That means, nothing that is made, tested, derived of, etc from animal products. That's why I can't 100% use that label on myself and "true" vegans will make sure you know that also. So yes, silk and wool are no-no's. Hence, why I'm plant based, as of yet, can't fully embrace the true definition. I don't know about that. As far as the definition of a vegan? I always thought and believe that the definition of a vegan is someone who doesn't eat meat or dairy products. Someone who doesn't eat meat but does eat dairy products is a vegetarian. Now you can take that to all kinds of different degrees, but to me that is the basic definition. Take prescription medication for example. I have to take a special form of B12 because I have a genetic defect called the MTHFR gene. It comes in a capsule. Most capsules are gelatin and gelatin is made from animals. I don't have a choice because that is all the medication comes in and I have to take it because without it my depression will come back and eventually dementia. This is what happened to my grandmother because unfortunately for her it was never diagnosed. Hopefully in the future there will be a choice to choose between a non-gelatin and gelatin capsule like there is for my vitamin D that I buy at Whole Foods, but right now there isn't, nor is there for my other prescription medications. Does that mean I'll never be a true "vegan"? No, I'm a vegan in my heart and soul and by my actions. I do and have always believed we were put on this earth to be the caretakers of animals and not to use them for what we wish. I abhor hunting in all of it's forms, and always have. Giving up eating meat to me was just another step in what felt like a true progression. I consider myself a vegan and have since I started on this journey 2 years ago with this whole foods, plant based (no meat, no dairy) diet. Debbie in MD.

birukitty ,would the spray form of B-12 work for you? I have a raspberry flavored one that I spray under my tongue each day. I got it from Amazon and it is vegan. I'd be happy to find a link for you if you think it would meet your needs.

I'd be happy to find a link for you if you think it would meet your needs. Thanks HappyMomma, but no it wouldn't. It is a special formulation that I get from my doctor. The vitamin B12 that it contains is 16,670% of the daily value, so that's a lot more than normal people take. It also contains B2, B6, Folate and Zinc. And then there are my prescription medications. I take the generic forms of Cymbalta and Wellbutrin to keep my depression in remission because I never want to go back to that 10 year battle I had with what was diagnosed as "treatment resistant depression". That was pure hell. I have to take those two medications, and unfortunately as of right now there is no choice from those drug manufactures as to what kind of capsules they put the medication in. 10-20 years in the future maybe we will have advanced enough that there will be. I certainly hope so. Debbie in MD.

Personally I don't think the "my mommy drinks cuz i cry" is funny (but that might be because I'm a boring teetotaller haha!) but I think the one your mum bought IS funny!

So I am just going to say "it's hard to be 100% vegan" and "being vegan is a heart felt thing as well as a lifestyle choice". I think both are correct.
I still have to consume gelatin capsules and it's just life.

I have been a vegetarian for over 25 years. Most people do not know. I don't feel like it's anyone's business and I don't want anyone to feel like they have to make something special for me at an event. If I am going to a potluck type of event I bring a dish I can eat. Otherwise I make sure I am well fed before I go. Ditto...except I've only been vegetarian for 5 years. It is not something I ever feel the need to announce, since it's really no one's business what I eat and I'm sure the people around me don't really care. I keep it to myself and it's a win/win .

i find most people who don't eat "normally" to be incredibly obnoxious... i'm so sick and tired of allergies, gluten, 21 day fix, blah blah freakin blah... just go eat! no one cares, its not cute or impressive and its just plain OLD hearing about it. I have a friend who has been gluten free for 15+ years. The current gluten free movement is a double edge sword for her. On one hand, she has more food choices (she eats mainly naturally gluten free foods), but on the other hand are the crazy "trend" followers. She was actually helped start a gluten free support group after she was first diagnosed, but she has recently stopped going. She was getting tired of giving advice to all the people doing it for trendy reasons, the obnoxious eaters. She is thinking of starting a new group for only people with diagnosed issues.

There are non gelatin (vegan) capsules available. They may be more expensive and/or the drug manufacturer doesn't use them.

To be perfectly honest, if I saw a woman wearing a t-shirt that said, "Not your mom, not your milk", I would not know she was promoting veganism.
I would think she was a nursing mom and had gotten tired of all the breastfeeding fetishists asking for a drink.

No lie, after I posted that, I googled to see if that shirt actually exists. It would have taken care of quite a few Christmas gifts this year.
