My dd is a huge fan of Deadpool and had been eagerly awaiting the movie. She went with two other friends and the one friend's mother. I warned the mom that I heard it was pretty bad. My dd is sixteen. She'll be able to go to that movie in a few months on her own. I knew she would be able to handle the nudity and crudity. I am anxious to see it on DVD and see what the fuss is about. Everyone I've talked to IRL whose seen it loved it.
At this point in my dd's life and probably a year or so before, I let her see most R rated movies. The exception I can think of off the top of my head is torture porn movies like Hostel.

My friend and I saw How to be Single. It's a typical chick flick. I'd call it a renter. (Although I need a new expression. Nobody rents movies anymore.) Not worth the $12 I spent to see it. It did end better than it started. I'd give it 3 out of 5.

i have two superhero fans, 8 and 10... older one loves dead pool. 15 yo dd went with friends and suggested i hold firm on "no"! i use this website to collect my info from... it's pretty "common sense" and breaks down ratings for sex, violence, language, positive message.. etc. and interesting that they include what age parents would recommend appropriate AND what age kid would recommend it appropriate for. often the kid-recommended ages are OLDER than those of the parents! www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/deadpool

DH and I go to the Cinemark Classic series every week, so I don't see many *new* movies (we saw To Kill A Mockingbird last week, which I had never seen), but we did recently go see Deadpool. DH is way into comic books, and I kind of knew what to expect. You definitely have to stay all the way to the end - I think DD went to see it but didn't stay because they turned the lights up as soon as the end credits started rolling. I know everyone keeps saying how bad Zoolander 2 is, but we still want to go see that. Someone told us yesterday it was headed to the dollar move, so maybe we'll at least save money seeing it. And we want to see Zootopia after watching the trailers about a million times when we were going to the Disney Screen movies every week.

Before I knew what was up, I let DS 17 see Deadpool. He will be 18 in the fall. Even so, I had a talk with him - yet again - about "Just because it's legal or you can do it doesn't mean that you want to." Personally, I would not waste my time or $$$. I have not let DS 15 see it.

Last night, DH and I watched "The Drop" with James Gandolfini (his final role) and Tom Hardy. It was different, but it was very good! I had never heard of it before and it was on cable and looked good. I recommend it!
Also, "Take Shelter" with Michael Shannon and "Cold In July" with Michael C. Hall. We just happened upon both of these, and really enjoyed them.

Just got home from seeing 10 Butterfield Lane. I love a good psychological so this was a great movie for us! ETA Cloverfield not Butterfield.

Saw "Whisky.Tango.Foxtrot." last week. I agree with a previous poster -- it is NOT a comedy. But it is very good. 3.5 peas out of 5.

We went to Deadpool last night...late to the party. It was crude but funny crude. Husband loved it, I found it funny. I'll give it a 3.5 out of 5. Definitely not for kids...17 & above. We are seeing Allegiant this weekend with youngest.

I just got back from Miracles from Heaven.
It is a faith-based movie with Jennifer Garner, based on a true story.
I totally loved it! So full of hope without being trite or using a bunch of pat answers. Really. Really. Good.
Warning: Chronically ill kids - it's hard to watch even if your kids not sick.

I saw Zootopia earlier today with my 6 year old son and I gotta say...I don't get the hype.
Great message but the movie itself was just "meh".
Maybe a 3/5 if I am feeling generous.

I took my 17 yo to DeadPool last night after already seeing it with my DSO when it first came out. Yes it's over the top, bordering on silly and a bit raunchy, but if you just sit back and enjoy the ride it's very funny! You have to pay attention to get a lot of the jokes and I did enjoy sneaking peeks at my 17 yo to see if he got them, which he did.
I can't wait to see London is Falling. My DSO and I saw Olympus is falling on our first date and we are going to see London is Falling on our 3 yo anniversary.

We just got home from seeing Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. As others have said, it is billed as a comedy and it is far from it ~ although there are some comedic moments. It was raunchier than it needed to be but overall we enjoyed it.

Saw "Hello, My Name is Doris Miller" today. I'd give it 4/5 peas -- pretty darn good. It's a comedy and there are some pretty pat answers to big issues (hoarding, etc.) but it's fun.

I had a movie marathon yesterday, courtesy of Redbox.
ROOM: completely loved it. Both main actors were superb.
BRIDGE OF SPIES: Tom Hanks can do no wrong in my book, but the story was fascinating. Great acting, definitely recommend.
SPOTLIGHT: I was a little distracted with household noise so I think it's best to watch this with no distractions or interruptions, as I think I lost some key pieces. Great cast, superb acting, sad subject. May have to watch this one again sometime when I am alone.
THE BIG SHORT: I think I am too dumb for this movie! I kinda hated it, and I really think that's because I did not understand what was going on. Hard to keep track of who's who, etc. Great cast, but overall a snoozer for me.

Just got back from seeing Sally Field's new movie Hello, My Name is Doris. It was funny, sad, quirky, and all things in between. We both liked it a lot.

Just got back from seeing the movie Eye in the Sky. If you are not familiar with the movie, it is about a British colonel (Helen Mirren) who requests a drone strike to take out a group of terrorists in Nairobi who are planning a series of suicide bombings. However, the situation grows more complicated when an American drone pilot (Aaron Paul) discovers that a nine-year-old girl has entered the targeted area, forcing a number of military leaders and politicians to debate the best course of action. It brings into debate the moral and legal aspects and the difference between the British and US as far as collateral damage. We enjoyed the movie and the discussion we had on the drive home. Sadly, it was Alan Rickman's last film.
ETA: Don't know if the difference between the British/US is true or Hollywood.

We watched "Criminal Activities" this weekend - new movie with John Travolta and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey). I read a couple of reviews that said "Quentin Tarrentino-ish" so I wasn't expecting much.
Hubby got bored, but it has a quirky script so we stuck with it. I actually thought it was well done - script was definitely quirky - even funny. And bonus, a perfect twist ending.
Also saw A Walk In the Woods with Redford and Nolte. Thoroughly enjoyable! San Andreas was just painful to watch - especially when my work got CGI destroyed!! The Rock is lucky he's entertaining because other than that, there was no reason so see it.

I saw The Boss last week. It was your typical Melissa McCarthy movie with it being a little heartwarming. I thought it was hilarious and predictable.

I also wondered about the reality of how different the Americans and the British were portrayed--seemed almost black humor.

We saw Jungle Book last night. It was good, but what really struck me was the fact that everything but Mowgli is CGI. Incredible.
On the DVD front, we saw Tumble Down with Jason Sudekis. It's a non-comedy role (although his character is a smart ass) and he did quite well.

We just saw the Tom Hanks movie A Hologram for the King.
It is a story about a failed American businessman looking to recoup his losses by traveling to Saudi Arabia and selling his idea to a wealthy monarch. We both enjoyed it and would give it a 7 out of 10.

Great idea for a thread! I will definitely be checking back here.
While I don't go out to the movies much, I am always on the lookout for something I can watch OnDemand or on Prime or Netflix.
In that spirit, I saw Birdman this weekend (the only movie Cinemax offered on last week's Watchathon that even remotely interested me). I though it was . . . interesting. Not exactly sure what the ending was supposed to mean (and the posters on imdb couldn't seem to agree either). Michael Keaton was really good, though. Worth watching, imho.

Saw it in the theater (as we do all movies) and when it ended we just looked at each other and said REALLY? The academy loved it which is usually the case in movies we don't like.
