The only time I signed up a child for camp was when I was paying for it and full approval from parents and their waivers signed or were going to be sent to them electronically.
Personally I would have done what you with the friends mom. I wouldn't refuse to let her go unless it was really something that I disagreed with and if the dates worked out in the end I would let her go if she wanted to. I am assuming it isn't something you strongly disagree with or she wouldn't have visited with her friend.
People make mistakes. I have no idea if this mom thought she was really helping out by signing her up to secure her a spot or before she missed out on the week or because she is someone who tends to overstep boundaries.

I haven't read the whole thread but OP, that mother is nuts! She TOTALLY overstepped and it was very inappropriate. You are not obligated to pay that deposit back and I would be wary of the family moving forward. I hate when people push their religion, I don't care what religion it is.

without having spoken to the child's parent about any of this? 100 percent this. I would never have thought people were that sneaky about conversion. This is my first experience with anything like this. DD was invited to her friend's church as a "brownies" type of thing where her host would earn a badge for bringing a friend. they gave her a bible, with her name written in the front page (in pen) and a christian comic book. i was okay with it (non-religious over here...) until i read.... "what is a sinner?" in the comic book. it went on to explain "you are a sinner, everyone sins....". she was 8 years old and most certainly NOT a sinner. i didn't allow her to go back, and she didn't balk. she said she told them "no thank you" for the bible but they told her to take it. but she said they had cool crafts! not saying it was sneaky, per sae, but didn't make feel like it was exactly how it was presented to me.
