My high school friend Jennifer, went by Jenni until around the time we graduated and now goes by Jen I am wondering if in the next decade or so she just starts going by J... ha ha ha.
I saw a really bad spelling of some common name recently, which this thread made me think of, but now I can't remember what name it was. It's kind of driving me nuts.

I met a Jeniffer (or maybe Jenniffer) once. I've seen Jenifer a handful of times. But yes, I'm also a 70s Jennifer.
I like Jenny, but only from family and friends that are close enough that they may as well be family. I get almost offended when someone who isn't "allowed" calls me Jenny. I remember when I was working, there was a guy I worked with named Forrest who called me Jenny for some reason I never figured out. Just made me want to yell "Run, Forrest, run!"

My BFF since second grade also spells it this way. Which we thought was awesome because I was Carie in a sea of Carries and she was Jenifer in a sea of Jennifers. My daughter is an Annabel in a sea of Annabelle's! Her last name is typically spelled with two ll's but the family spelling is one. So I always tell people her name and then say just one L in each name. They look at me like I'm crazy and I have to spell it out for them. We went with the one L spelling because my X (who is English) swore that only snooty posh people spelled it Annabelle. ( I am not a fan of Belle, so I went with his silly reasoning) One of my best friends is an Annabel. Her parents are German.

I grew up in the 70's with a tonne of Jennifer's ... my bff is a Jennifer Jeniffer is just dumb It kind of reminds me of my cousin who named his son Mathew instead of Matthew ... no idea why Sometimes a person is in labor for a long time and pushes for three hours. They use a vacuum and forceps and anything else they can think of to get the giant-headed baby out of your vagina. Then when you are about to die of exhaustion and they hand you the baby and tell you there is no nursery because they are remodeling it and you will have to have the non sleeping baby in your room. The next morning you are told you cannot leave the hospital until the birth certificate is signed and you have slept about an hour in the 28 hours. You then ask your husband and the nurse how to spell the name because you have seen it both ways and both people tell you it only has one T and there is no internet (because Al Gore hadn't invented the good parts of it yet), so you just write it down and hope that you are right. Then you get home and realize that you didn't spell it the traditional way (since you only agreed upon the name after the kid was born since both parents were teachers and every name either one of you suggested was vetoed because one of you had taught a naughty _______ (insert name)). So you throw up your hands with a WTF (long before WTF had been invented) and just go with the flow. Then you find out that your kid loves the spelling and phonetically it is correct, so you live with it and meet several other one-T'd Mathews and know that life is good. But yeah, a two F'd Jeniffer is weird.

I have a neighbor/friend who spells it Jenifer (she's in her 70s), but I don't know of any Jeniffers. I think sometimes it's a case of someone having the wrong perception of how a name is spelled. My daughter's middle name is Nichole. I never looked in baby books or even gave the spelling much thought. To me, it's the female derivative of Nicholas and so when I filled out her birth certificate, I naturally spelled it Nichole. It wasn't until years later that I realized that it's not the common spelling of Nicole at all. And frankly, I still don't understand why. I wasn't doing it to be cute, trendy, or different - it just seemed like the correct spelling to me. When my SIL (at the time) had her second baby we were visiting her in the hospital. I looked at the crib when they rolled it in and said, "Oh, they spelled his name wrong. They left out the d." Everyone but my husband (we're now divorced) looked at me like I had two heads. Sometime a couple of minutes later I handed her the card we brought with her name and the baby's name on it, and she looked at it really funny. After we left I guess the discussion happened about the name. She had named him Chanler, because she had no idea there was a d in it. I guess she asked around after and ended up changing his name to Chandler legally a few weeks later. ~~~ I absolutely love my name, and I don't shorten it. I have never and will never introduce myself as Trish. What drives me CRAZY is when I introduce myself as Tricia and people say nice to meet you, Trish, or address an email to Trish when my full name is in the email address and my signature.

I am also a Jennifer, but my mom was ahead of her time since I was born in the 1960's. LOL I know a lot of Jennifers and have never come across a "Jeniffer". My dad's friend use to call me Jenna-f(like the letter sound)-fer, which is how I imagine it would be pronounced. I have seen if spelled with one "n" and with a "g" instead of a "j".

Jenny... <shudder> Oh, it's perfectly fine for other people but somehow I never "felt" like a Jenny, lol. It would take me a while to realize someone was talking to me if they used that one. Do NOT call me Jenny! Eww! My mother was adamant about that when I was little. I can't stand it! The only people who call me anything other than Jennifer are my brother and sister. They usually call me Jenn. I prefer to be called Jennifer. You do not have permission to short it if I don't know you, but never shorten it to Jenny. I will throat punch you.

All of the Jennifers I've ever been acquainted with have used the most common spelling, and as a child born in the 70s, I know A LOT of Jennifers!
I'm a teacher and through the years I've encountered all kinds of interesting alternate spellings for fairly common names. Most of the time I don't even think twice about it, but every once in awhile a student comes along with a name spelled so unusually that I can't help but wonder what reasoning the child's parent(s) used to arrive at that particular spelling.
The most baffling example I can think of right now was a girl whose name was LyKn. Luckily, I'd heard the girl called by her name several times before I saw how it was spelled, because I'm not so sure I'd have ever figured out that it was supposed to be pronounced like "Laiken"!! I've known this girl for almost 16 years now and I have to admit that her name still throws me for a loop every time I see it, lol.

Oops, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I have a fairly common first name that's spelled in an unusual way. Growing up, I very rarely encountered anyone whose name was spelled like mine. My mom purposefully chose to use the non-traditional spelling of my name, and even though I've since grown to embrace it, I truly disliked the way it made me stick out when I was younger.
When I married my husband, I decided to take his last name, which is just as unusual (and maybe even moreso) as my first name. In a weird twist of fate, my niece, who was 6 when my husband and I got married, has the same first AND last name as me. Her first name is spelled the more common way, but is pronounced identically to mine. Talk about confusing!

It's funny to see so many comments on Jenny/Jen/Jenn/Jennifer. Every Jennifer I have ever known has a very strong opinion on Jenny/Jen. You're one or the other, but never both. I don't know any Jennifer who is indifferent about them. I'm a never-ever Jenny person. And Jen/Jenn is specific too. I'm a one-n Jen. I never liked the way Jenn looked. It's not symmetrical But dh is Todd, and I hate it when people spell it Tod, and DS is still always Matthew, never Mat(t), so I'm totally inconsistent. I am indifferent. Go by both and neither bother me

I hate to see Jeffrey spelled Jeffery. So many people spell it like this that it became an acceptable derivation. I mean I know Geoffrey is the original spelling of Jeffrey, but Jeffery just irks me. Like is the guy called Jeff ER y? ........... Ha! My brother is Jeff ery. He was named after our father so at least my mom isn't responsible for the goofy spelling, but it was just funny to see you zero in on that. The family "legend" is that somewhere back in the line, there was a Jefferson, so it was spelled this way to pay homage to that. Now I'm laughing! We chose that name because he was born on Thomas Jefferson's 250th birthday.

No, and I think the people who ask must not know how to spell. Back in the day, if I saw it spelled that way, I would have thought the parents didn't know how to spell, either. Like I know a guy (older than me) named Michael, only it's spelled Micheal. Does anyone want to know how much that grates on my nerves?!? However, these days I see so many creative name spellings that I just think it's deliberate now. I do know a girl (a grown woman, I mean, but younger than me) spelled Jennyfur. This made me laugh. I have an older brother who my Mom named Micheal and I bet it was because she couldn't spell LOL! He goes by Michael in his life, more often simply Mike, despite his birth certificate and never had a problem. I never understood the creative spellings but to each his own, no judgment. It always complicates a childhood:/. My name is Mariellen, named after grandmas Marion and Ellen, thus the spelling. People see Maribeth, Marilou, Marianne and never think twice BUT Mariellen is seldom pronounced correctly. I fixed the problem and became Mari haha. Jennyfur is ridiculous. Is that her given name or did she adopt it for herself? OMG. I didn't think about the fact that I might actually offend someone here being snotty about the Micheal spelling/misspelling. (Autocorrect just tried to fix that.) So sorry! I know you're laughing, but still. As far as I know, Jennyfur is her given name. Nice girl, unusual name.

Has anyone ever actually known anyone who spells it this way? Never. I've only ever seen it spelled "Jennifer". Oh, and our very own "Gennifer" of course! Like I know a guy (older than me) named Michael, only it's spelled Micheal. Does anyone want to know how much that grates on my nerves?!? Probably as much as it grates on my nerves. My brother's middle name is Michael so I've been able to spell it correctly all my life. Whenever I see it written as "Micheal" I figure that the person doesn't know how it is spelled, but it never occurred to me that the parent of said Micheal might be to blame for the incorrect spelling. It kind of reminds me of "Swiffer" and the accent would be on the "iffer" part instead of the "Jenn" Exactly! I read it as jen-IFF-uh with the emphasis on the second syllable. Jeniffer the bum sniffer. I hate to see Jeffrey spelled Jeffery. So many people spell it like this that it became an acceptable derivation. I mean I know Geoffrey is the original spelling of Jeffrey, but Jeffery just irks me. Like is the guy called Jeff ER y? ........... The only time I've seen it spelled that way is Jeffery Deaver, the author. Every other person I know with that name is either Geoffrey or Jeffrey. And all of them, without exception, go by Geoff or Jeff. Actually, reading back my post, Geoffrey / Geoff is a much more ridiculous spelling that Jeffery!! (Geoff is how my FIL's name is spelled.)

I am a Jennifer who goes by Jen NEVER Jenny. I don't mind two N's but I'm already shortening my name, why keep an extra letter. I've seen Jenifer and Gennifer but never two F's.
I'm also a 70's baby and hated that every third girl was named Jennifer. I wanted to be unique!Went to camp once. There were 10 girls in each bunk and four of us were named Jennifer (all the same age).
My middle name is Rebecca and for years I thought my mom chose that name after her favorite aunt. No she me named after a frickin theme song from a commercial (for diapers? Shampoo? She can't remember now haha) that went something like "Jenny Rebecca with the light brown hair". Thankfully she at least went with Jennifer.

crimsoncat05 you're one too! I'm another 70s Jennifer, have never seen Jeniffer, but I did meet a Jennipher in high school. I go by Jen, and then we get to play the one "n" or two game. I don't care all that much really, about half the people I introduce myself to call me Jan forever, even when I tell them it's short for Jennifer. Okay, Jan, got it!

To all you Jennifers born in the '70s ... I was a young adult during most of the '70s and it seemed like literally every.single.baby.girl born during those years was named Jennifer. It was the one name I swore I'd never use, just because it was so ubiquitous. By the time I was having babies in the 80s, it didn't seem quite so common. I also wanted to say, I think the nickname Jiff for Jennifer is adorable.
