Will this act of evil stop you from visiting Orlando? Disney? Going off Disney property?
After 9/11, we Floridians got a big wake up call about how much we rely on tourism dollars when the planes were not flying and not bringing in our guests. We were all asked to try to go out, spend dollars, do the best we can. The boys have strong memories of going to Animal Kingdom two days later and being almost alone in the park. And I have memories of me and the other mother in the play area stopping and being almost scared when an actual plane flew overhead-a fighter jet zooming loudly in the sky over our heads. Soon thereafter the planes started flying again and the memories faded but with this...this horrible act of evil...will you still come?
I wonder too if this evil is all the more hard to understand when happens in a place that is supposed to be everyone's happy place. The place where people save to bring their children to share magic with them. The last place we would expect evil to touch.
Will you still come?
Or will you hesitate?
(This post brought to you by the news reports that Disney-or some part of it-was scouted as a possible target.)

I don't have a trip there planned, but I wouldn't NOT plan one because of this. (Hope this makes sense.) Horrific things can happen any time, anywhere. My little victory over evil is to still live my life as long and as well as I can.

Yes, we will still come.
We're tentatively planning a Disney trip for next year. We always spend at least one day at Downtown Disney, as well as many little side trips for this or that. We will still do that, too. We stay on property and have never gone off other than to DD.
I've always felt safe at Disney, maybe naively so. We go through bag check to enter each park, and now I understand they've installed metal detectors. If there was a threat to our safety, I feel it's more likely to come from an employee who has behind-the-scenes access than a guest.

While I don't have any plans to visit Orlando in the near future (and didn't even before Saturday night), I wouldn't hesitate to travel there. The HP section at Universal is a bucket-list type item for me, as well as going to WDW as an adult. Heck, if I could swing it financially, I'd go this week just to show my support and let the terrorists know they're not going to scare people and dominate everyone with their hate.

I'm actually going to be in Orlando in 2 weeks at Disney and Universal. Do you have links that show Orlando as a possible target? Regardless of it being a target or not I will be there spending my tourism dollars!

Yes I would still come (we were just there in March so no upcoming trips currently). But I never stopped going to the movies or kept my kids home from school out of fear so there's that.....

Yes, I would still come with the information I have now. I don't think it's any more a target than other major tourist attractions.

Yes we would come to Disney. This tragedy could happen anywhere and have happened. We had a shooting in a nice mall outside of Atlanta in the late 90's. I went back the next week.
I cannot let fear rule my life.

I will go to Orlando, Paris and New-York and I will go to the movie and the mall because if we stop doing those things they win and I refuse to live in fear.

I wouldn't let this stop me from going (although our next planned trip isn't until spring 2017). If I were to limit myself to "places where mass shootings haven't occurred," American geography wouldn't permit me much travel.
I lived in NYC during 9/11. I get it. I'm going to live my life. I'm not going to let this asshole, or even a coordinated network of assholes, make me afraid.

If I had any inclination to go to your area I would absolutely be heading there, in part to show support and solidarity.
We we made a trip to NYC very soon after 9/11 for that very reason.
(To clarify my first sentence, we took our kids to WDW when they were young, but we aren't really into it at this stage in our life. Maybe grandchildren will get us back there one day!)

Do you have links that show Orlando as a possible target? I don't. There was a post here on the Orlando thread, maybe people.com? But as I was typing my response (my son loves Downtown Disney and it is he and his friends go to spot for group date night) I heard it on CNN too.

I live outside of Orlando, and would never stop going to Disney. I also remember going there the week after 9/11 and how eerie it was in an almost empty park. We were able to just stay on the rides as long as we wanted because no one was waiting to go on.
I took my Girl scout troop to Universal's Citywalk to see Blue Man Group last night. I never even thought twice about it. I did have a mom cancel, but she changed her mind when one of the dad's who is a cop had no problem with us going. Everything was normal and crowded. I was surprised that despite buying the tickets from council as a troop, they had the seats spread out everywhere, with each girl in different parts of the theater. I had to insist they move us around so my group of 10 year old girls weren't sitting by themselves.

I'll be there with the kids the first week of August. I am praying for a cold front to hit while we are there. For the most part we will be at Anna Maria Island at my SIL's place. BUT oldest DS wants to treat us to Disney for a day. Hadn't even given it a thought to not go. Well, except for the heat.

I looked it up and saw that the murderer (because that's what he really is) was scouting Disney Springs as a possible location. I live in Washington DC so really, any place here could be a potential terrorist target. Life goes on.... SaveSave

No, because I don't travel anywhere. ETA: Not because I'm scared, because I'm considerate of others. I can't see how I could ever vacation in Florida because of the distance. Flying is not an option with my son.

I continue business as usual.
I live in a big, easily targeted city.
Life goes on. Has to go on.
We have to continue do what we are doing, or those who are actively trying to stop us win.
So, yes, I would still visit Orlando (if I had plans to).

To add a bit of levity to discussion-I think a cold front in August will happen just shortly after hell freezes over. But the good news is that Anna Maria is one of the most beautiful beaches around and if all you do is sit on the porch under the shade and fans while watching the waves you will have gotten just about as close to heaven as one can get here on earth.

Theme parks are like the 9th circle of hell to me, so I was unlikely to come to Orlando in the first place. I'm not any more likely to not come now. We traveled to Paris this past spring, though, having made our plans in the wake of the attacks last November. If anything, I think a place that has recently experienced an act of terrorism is even more security-conscious than normal and perhaps safer.

Yes.
I also went to NYC a couple of months after 9/11.
Remember all those tourism commercials for NYC right after 9/11? Lots of stars all singing in the streets in Times Square asking people to support NYC by continuing to travel there. I looked at my husband and said"let's go" and we did. It was great. We were able to get amazing seats at all the shows we wanted to see and the hotel employees were really nice to us. The museums weren't very crowded. The ferry and Statue of Liberty were very empty.
I will not avoid Orlando now. In fact, we are saving for our next Orlando trip because the boys are on Book 5 of Harry Potter and we've said we'll go to Universal when they finish.

Yes, I would still go. Any terrorists are not going to hit a city a second time. They'll look for venues where no one is expecting it.0

I have a conference scheduled the first week of August, and we open at Disney. It hadn't occurred to me to not go.
This was evil, and it could happen anywhere. Altering my plans won't keep me "safe" from something like this.

If we all stopped going anywhere where an act of violence took place there would be no place left to go, unfortunately. So, no, I would not hesitate to visit Orlando, or Paris, or Boston during the marathon, etc., etc., etc.

I was just there in March and will be back again this March. My company is holding a 4 million dollar event there and bringing 5,000 women in for 4 days. No plans to change as of now.

I don't think this incident makes Orlando any more dangerous than any other place. I just wouldn't come to Orlando because there is nothing there that interests me, not because of the mass shooting. now if you are talking about Disney World or some other crowded tourist attraction, then no, it still won't deter me. I was just at Disneyland last week with no concern. sad to say, these kinds of incidents will continue to happen and that shouldn't force us to live in fear. we should be mindful but not fearful. cautious but not deterred.
