This is the master bath in the house I'm buying. Fugly, eh? The tile goes halfway up the wall all the way around and it's not in the budget to get rid of that, but I think I can work with it. I'm going to change the brass fixtures out and change the hideous pink countertop. Once the pink is gone I think the tile won't be so bad because the pink in the tile is so dark it's more red. So my question is, what would you do for a countertop and paint in here? Thanks! Attachments:

I think a marble for the counter top or quartz. Something that doesn't have a lot of pattern. I wouldn't want to keep the fixtures brass. Could you spray paint them with a nickel finish? Paint color...I don't know!

Yeah, that pink countertop is definitely the problem. (Although, do they have brass plumbing and a pewter light fixture? Ew.)
I'd probably shop around for something that picks up the grey tones of that tile that you're going to be stuck with, and then match my fixtures accordingly to give it a sort of cohesive look.
From that I'd experiment with the paint options, based on whether it's more of a blue-gray, a green-gray, or a brown-gray. (Hopefully it is more blue or green than brown... I feel like those end up as better paint choices.)

I'm of two minds...the first being, paint the walls and vanity a dark gray and switch to shiny silver fixtures and knobs, update lighting, I don't know for sure since I can't see it in person. I think I'd want a black marble, quartz, or granite counter (or one that just looks like one of those) to tone it all down.
The other, fully embrace the shit out of it and add a couple palms and vintage porcelain flamingos and white towels with your name embroidered in pink and more mirrors, and white fluffy furry throw rugs.

Yikes! I think I might go with something plain and maybe darker...perhaps a grey, to tone it down a little.

I would switch out the counter to a grey marble or quartz. Something as plain as I could get. Switch the shiny gold to silver. I would get rid of that mirror and put something in with a frame, crown molded. I'm not a fan of those half walls between sinks and toilet. like WHY? and I would tear that out. Paint the walls a light grey.

Grey countertop with dark grey cabinets and a light grey/blue wall color to pull out the grey in the tile. I would get new fixtures and lights and frame in the mirror. It actually could be very nice with a bit of updating. Houzz is a great place to wonder through some bathrooms for inspiration.

Me, I love the pink countertop. Lol. The walls are too much though. I'm weird, I know.

I would go with a black granite countertop and light gray walls.

Since it's the master bath, I probably wouldn't put any money into it until I could afford to re-do the whole thing. I mean, why try to work with tile you don't like?

I'd have fun with it too, I've got an assortment of deco flamingos and kitsch that deserve a space of their own, even if it's short-lived. When it was time to get serious I'd look at a neutral warm grey counter, in a material with little pattern. One of the engineered materials like Silestone might be perfect. You are right, hanging the hardware and fixtures will make a big difference. Have fun - the best part of this renovation is it's practically mistake proof. You know from the start your decisions will be improvements!

As much as that pink countertop makes me gag, I'd be tempted to wait and redo when I could really gut the place. I mean, there's so much I dislike about that room. haha!

Black or dark gray countertop, paint walls and cabinets a shade lighter than slate. Replace all fixtures and hardware with pewter or nickel, not shiny.

All of the suggestions for grey make sense to me.
The other thing I thought of is, if you can find a color in the existing tile that is a dark red, paint the walls that color. It would be very unusual and could look great. I'd change out (or spray paint) those fixtures; that alone should make a good amount of difference.

I'd pull the tile, sand the walls and then paint. Or cover with beadboard? Then you could redo the sink and fixtures and not have to coordinate with that tile.

Only if she doesn't do her makeup in there...the cast from the red would be awful.

I'll be the odd one out and say to go with one of the other neutrals in the tile color for painting the walls, more along the tan/beige/cream/ivory lines. To me, the warmth of the colors in the tile doesn't feel right with the cool tones of grays. If you used a warm neutral then you could play up the red tone in the tiles as an accent color (wine, merlot, burgundy, etc.). (Gee, is it 5 o'clock or something? I seem to have wine on my mind, LOL!)

I personally kind of love this bathroom Great suggestions for the changes though. I envision black countertops and grey walls.

Wow. That is something else, for sure. I like everyone's ideas about having fun with the space, but I don't know how long I could stand it. Grey is a great idea to tone it down. Put something on the wall that will draw your eye to it. Either a big painting, some hanging or some art masterpiece you draw on the wall.
But wow.

All I would do is put in silver fixtures and drawer pulls and then put multicolored pastel towels in. I love the pink.

yup that's a fun pink!! I'm having flashbacks! We had a house in Utah like that. It was our first house we bought as older house and it was ALL that color. Dh called it Pepto Bismal! We did everything in a yellow cream color then. We still joke about painting that old house. Now we just redid our master bath down I have Navy white stripe shower curitan black vanitys cabinets and white sinks (I originally didn't want white anything! but I compromised with Dh). The walls are a gray slate color. LOVE it. love the gray with the black! All my accents are navy. It looks really good with white and black against the gray.
