Update: I saw my GP and she said my right breast is noticeably bigger but is not concerned. She says it feels like bubble wrap right now but that was normal with PMS and that it should go back down to normal size and feeling in a few days. She told me this was totally normal. She said she couldn't detect any lumps or anything and she said the pain was also associated to PMS. I asked her about inflammatory breast cancer and she said she didn't think it was that. It could just be PMS. It has been a looooong time and this is just the 7th period this year after none for 12 years. I guess I just have to get to know what is nothing and what is something. This is the end. Thank you for your support. All is good. Hi Everyone, My right breast is huge now compared to what it was in May I would say. I have gone from a regular D cup to a DDD and the breast is sore to touch. I have put on weight which isn't good but why would it hurt this much if it had just grown with weight? I am close to my time of the month but not there yet. Today is only Day 15 of a 21 day cycle. Do I google this? Not sure if this weighs in but my dad's mom died of breast cancer at my age and my mom had it when she was 64. Thanks, Elannah  |

I was just wondering in the mean time if anyone else has had a swollen breast (2 cup sizes is a lot) with the time of the month. It is weird isn't it? The right one is just so big now. (It looks funny) |

You may have a lymph node that is blocked. It could be as simple as a cold. But you really need to have it checked out. Can you use urgent care?

Ok I googled. It is common with PMS and I might just need some DepoProvera or some other hormone to deal with it. Apparently it isn't that uncommon.
The size though is what is weird. Women get implants to look like this but it isn't fun to be this big.

I have had breast tenderness during my cycle, but never ever swelling like you describe. PLEASE call your doctor first thing tomorrow!!
I think if you start googling you'll scare yourself a lot more than you are now. Just resolve to call your MD as soon as they open in the morning. Keep us updated!

Yeah it could be a lymph node for that matter. I hadn't thought of that. There is a treatment centre near my house (the secret one that no one goes to on the weekend) and I will drop in there today. I don't feel any lumps or anything like that. The tissue is normal. Just Kim Kardashian huge.

A breast surgeon once told me that pain in a breast, as the only symptom, is rarely caused by cancer, so I hope that is some comfort. There are many other causes for pain and swelling; I would think that inflammation of a mammary duct or lymph node is likely. But I agree with everyone else: get it checked out soon.
Just saw your update that you are going to a treatment center today. Good girl! Hope you'll report back afterward.

I thought she was just giving a timeline - like, in the last 3 months it seems to have grown. It might have been a slow thing but, for some reason she knows how much smaller she was in May? Or something?  Actually, I thought I knew what I meant in my head, but in typing it out, I realise I have no idea at all!  OP - make sure you do go to that clinic! |

May was a normal breast size August is a big breast size. I didn't just let it go. My mammograms have all been normal. I just noticed in the past week that the right size is really big(this is in the last week not month). That's all. It hurts but is not excruciating like a toothache would be. It feels very heavy. I am going in a little while to the clinic. I am sure it is nothing. |

My breasts swell the week before my period and are quite painful. They are noticeably larger, but not a cup size (or more) larger. And they both swell, not just one. And they always have, this isn't a new thing.
In short, yes, it does happen, but what you are describing is something that needs medical attention, not a wait it out approach.

Mine swell just before my period starts. But it's only noticeable to me. Not anything like you've described.

Is the affected breast noticeably warmer than the other? Is the skin red, purple, or pink? Has the skin texture changed to have dimpling similar to that of an orange peel? Are the lymph nodes under the arm on that side enlarged?
I honestly don't think it's very common at all for a breast to swell two entire cup sizes just due to PMS.
Please let us know what you hear at the doctor's office. If you can't see anyone at the treatment center for some reason, please call your regular doctor's answering service and ask if you can wait for them to work you into their schedule or if you should make a visit to an urgent care clinic or the ER today.

Yes he though it was only due to weight gain. Breasts aren't always the same size. See your own doctor to follow up. (He was nice but non-specific about it).
The righty is just weird now. It's great to have big boobs if you like them and you suit them. I love Victoria Beckham's size. After enduring teasing in school they have been nothing but a PITA. This is where the frustration comes in. It will take about 4 years to see a plastic surgeon and then wait after that for OR time. Not kidding. Plastic surgery like this is a low priority and it may not happen in my lifetime.
Have to go on a weight loss plan and lose it that way (I hope).
I didn't know you could go up 2 cup sizes due to PMS. I believe it. The time of the month is maybe due to come on Friday or Saturday so maybe after that is finished they will go back to normal.
I am sorry if I offended anyone with my Kim Kardashian comparison. The right one does look like her rather than me. LOL.

I have no faith in urgent care or emergency room doctors. I have had an ER doctor tell me my right ovary felt just fine. I didn't have a right ovary! If you are concerned, see your own doctor.

Depending on your answers to the questions in my first post in this thread, what you've described could be symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer. Many doctors who are not specialists in women's health care issues are not well-informed about this and might not recognize it.
If you did not see a doctor who specializes in women's health today, I'd recommend seeing someone who does and asking them to rule out the possibility of inflammatory breast cancer.

I am not a doctor; I only play one on message boards. But this is August and you said that this started in May. Is this the only cycle you've had since May? Or have they grown and shrunk three times since May? Otherwise, I'm just not following how you are attributing this to PMS. |

I had my first cycle in 12 years in March. Normal size.
May started to get a bit bigger.
June bigger
August huge. But just the right one.
I am sure it is just hormone related.

It's scary and not something you want to deal with, you're unhappy, and someone with medical credentials told you to follow up with your family doctor so you've got any justification you could want to stop dealing with it...
But please, if it was something affecting your whole body - like hormones, PMS, gaining weight, etc, it would effect both breasts the same or at least similarly... That's not what you're describing...
Follow up with your family doctor this week... Ask to be seen by a specialist... Attend the appointment and complete the tests...
It's not good enough for someone to say, "it's probably nothing" - don't stop until someone can tell you, "it is _____"...

Take it from someone who's been on too many medical roller coasters: Just because a doctor tells you what you want to hear doesn't mean that he's right.
Could it be hormones? Absolutely. But there are other things that you have not successfully excluded. Every time you say, "Oh I'm sure it's just..." which you've said several times in this thread, you are trying to convince yourself and us that it's true. It's not going to work that easily for us. I've lost count of how many times I've heard "It's just...(hormones, the flu, a tooth ache)" and then buried the person or spent years taking care of them. I'm not saying to always ignore your doc or see a specialist about every little thing. But the random doc with no idea about boobs other than what they feel like isn't usually enough to get a thorough diagnosis.
I hope you are right. But what would be the harm in digging deeper?
