I know the election hasn't been called yet but it looks unlikely that Hillary will win. I'm curious how people will explain to their kids that Trump won. My kids don't know everything about the election or the candidates, but they have heard what trump says and think he is mean. How do you explain that despite all of those things, people still wanted him to be president? Especially when I can't even come up with a good reason myself.

I have no idea, other than all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. I did try to explain to my 7 year old before he went to bed that no matter what, his life wasn't going to change drastically tomorrow...I don't know how to explain it further, let alone how to look my 12 year old daughter in the eye tomorrow though.

My oldest is 6. I will try and shield my children from my fear and anger. Their age makes it easier to protect them...they (the students) learned about the election yesterday at school. I am certain they will discuss results and I am seriously considering keeping him from school because I don't want his school to discuss this with him.

I have no idea. I am sitting here with tears in my eyes thinking about having to explain to my 5-year-old dd that Trump will be our president. She has been very observant this election season and often talks about how mean he is and how she is so glad that Hilary will be president. I just don't know. I do know that we have been talking about moving overseas and this might be the push we needed to go. I just can't even.

This is what's hurting me the most right now. I really don't know how to explain to my kids how someone as vile as Trump could win the highest office in this country. How do I reassure my LGBTQ kids that they're going to be alright when I myself am absolutely terrified right now. How do I explain to my autistic son, still bullied somewhat at school, that the biggest bully won.
I'm hiding in another locked room in my hospital, waiting until my Trump-loving coworker leaves in 45 minutes, so then I can cry without hiding.

My youngest will be confused, because despite us never telling him this, he, many months ago announced that Trump was a "bad guy". Our oldest, who is the likely source of the younger one's info is going to be shocked and probably upset. I think he, like many, truly believed that there were not enough people in the US willing to vote for someone who acts as Trump has been acting.
I don't know what to tell him, really. I do know that I really wish we could all just cocoon up at home tomorrow as a family and not have to deal with the world quite yet. For the first time in my life, I am finding it hard to imagine getting up and going about my day as planned the day after a presidential election. Especially since it's currently 1:40 am here and I cannot even begin to go to sleep. I tried. I was all cuddled up in bed. But no luck.

I worked so hard to become a citizen of this country. Right now I truly don't know why. I genuinely believed that Americans were better than this.
I'm a trauma surgeon, I worked in a level 1 trauma center in a major city. I see/saw the horrible things people do to each other every day. And still I thought Americans were better than this.
I just have no words right now. I'm praying that she'll still eke out a victory; it's not over yet and it's very close. I'm praying that people are not going to let evil triumph.

My 17 yr old and I have discussed the election many times. She is watching the results herself, well she was before she went to sleep. She understands it's a complicated issue and not just media sound bites.

We aren't ok. Live in a state full of hate that people aren't allowed to use the bathroom they feel comfortable using...now coming to the rest of the United States! Institutional racism and misogyny are NOT OK.

My 6 year old said he wanted Hillary to win and when I pushed him for how he figured that out since I never discussed the election with him, he said 'I just used my brain.' Apparently half of the nation did not. At this point, I couldn't care less who that offends, but to elect this POS as POTUS, you have to be stupid AF. I am sad and furious. I will never reach acceptance of this atrocity.

My 6 year old has seen the clips and blips and commercials on tv and she came to the conclusion on her own that Trump is a bully. I'm afraid of everything that will continue to come out of his mouth for the next 4+ years, and there is no way possible to shield her from all of it.

Institutional racism and misogyny are NOT OK. Another big thing I'm afraid of. We live in a predominantly blue state, and I still think it's the best place we could be in the US for our family, but of course a Trump and republican government is going to affect us. I just have no idea what this is all going to look like, or how it's going to end. I've never been so frightened or disgusted to live in this country as I am right now, and I don't care if that sentiment offends anybody.

I read a beautiful post on Instagram and I am paraphrasing here:
"Reassure them that this moment is only a moment. It is a chapter in a story unfinished. Remind them that a president is not our country. WE are our country. We get to decide who we are. We get to choose how we will treat people. We get to choose to love. Every day."
My kids are going to be crushed. One day, the news was on and they asked me why that man named Trump was saying such mean things and why he was acting like a bully because you know, at school, they learn that bully=bad. From that moment on, they have hated him. They literally boo every time he is on tv. We went to Chicago a few weeks ago and they boo'ed every time we went by the Trump building. DH and I have tried really hard not to say too much around them, other than that we agree that his behavior is not nice and that is why we won't be voting for him.
It's funny how a 6 and 4 year old can see what so many adults cannot.

My students voted in an online poll - over 90% voted for Hillary. They are going to be stunned. How do I sit there third hour with six 8th grade boys, all of whom are Latino or African-American, and explain how someone who is such a divisive bully who demeans others like them actually won? That so many people voted for this man? I try to be rational and explain things when they and my other students ask questions, without putting my own personal feelings into it, but it's going to be so hard because I truly do not understand the people who voted for him, and how they could look past the horrible things he said and all the lies. It's unfathomable to me that this has happened.

I just don't know. The younger two are so young that I don't think it will be on their immediate radar.
My older two, both young ladies........
I was so sure that there couldn't possibly be that many Americans who would vote for someone with such hatred and misogyny in their heart.
I was wrong. And that is frightening.

I don't know. My son went to bed in tears because it was not looking good earlier, but he was asleep before things were finalized. Tomorrow morning will be heartbreaking. I haven't decided what to say.

I haven't decided what to say. I don't know that there is anything that can be said. This man was endorsed by the KKK and he didn't denounce that. He's admitted to sexually assaulting women. Yet people made him POTUS. What do you say, love trumps hate except in America? I am so sorry for all of you who have children. I hope you find a way to comfort them. I hope we all find a way to survive the coming four years.

You model, in your home and life, the values and behavior you want them to emulate. If you tell them the sky is falling, that's what they'll believe. We are stuck with this result, like it or not. Try to teach them to adapt and overcome obstacles if you can't find anything positive at all.

what you posted above sounds like dems towards conservatives and Christians. Not only by the dems in office but every day life - and here on 2ps.

After what he said about Mexicans and about John McCain/POWs? ?? Unreal Yes, because it's his right to vote as he wanted. And this Mexican has no problem with him voting how he wants. He spent 24 yrs in the Navy defending that right to vote. Whether you or I agree with his choice. He still has the right to it.

It's unfathomable to me that this has happened. Teach them.that EVERY vote counts. To never miss out on their voice being heard. The majority didn't elect Trump...the majority who turned out did. African Americans weren't incentivized to vote for a white woman the way they were for a black man. We are more than our demographic, more than a statistic and each voice matters and should be represented at the polls. Everyone needs to get out there and vote! I have to convince myself that voter turnout was the cause in the close races that shouldn't have been or I just don't know how I will face my fellow Americans with any optimism for our future.
