Sooooo not ready for the rain. I drove to school this afternoon to pick up my genius grandson because it was raining (we only live a few blocks away, but it was raining). Said genius child opened the car window and let in the rain. When I yelled, he tried to close the window and it wouldn't go up. Yep, window mechanism is broken on the first day of a week-long rain storm. I have an appointment to take it in tomorrow AM. Hopefully it will not be raining too hard in the morning. You know that was a sympathy "like" - I really hope you get that window fixed. SaveSaveI hope you can get it fixed. It's amazing how they always breaks when it's raining. It has really been pouring here all morning.

We have had some major downpours up here in the Pacific NW (Seattle) over the last few days. Today, so far, is dry, cloudy and cool. It's been kind of weird this winter, because both Portland (i.e. south of us) and Vancouver, BC (i.e. north of us) have had lots of snow, and we've had none. Personally I think that's a bummer, because I love snow and miss it. Seatac airport had 2.9 inches of rain in the last 71 hours, which even for here is quite a lot.
The biggest problem I have with the rain is driving. I'm okay if it's dark OR wet, but when it's dark AND wet I cannot see worth a crap. I was so glad DH was driving us home yesterday, because even though he has the same problem, he is a way better driver than me. Seriously, I cannot see lines on the streets, edges of curbs, things like that. I'm half blind. And apparently there is no fix for this (I've asked my eye doctor). I just try really hard to avoid driving at night when it's raining.

I hate driving under those conditions, feeling as blind as a bat (it would probably be better to be a bat, at least they can navigate in the dark).

I was just whining about having to go to DS's school tonight. They have a typical CA layout with all the classrooms opening to the outside and paths instead of enclosed hallways, so we are going to get soaked moving between rooms. I'll be rummaging through the garage looking for umbrellas before we leave. The good news is the forecast prompted me to get out and shop today so I have everything I need to do a little organization project over the next few days. Kind of like Park Royal mall in Vancouver It always cracked me up that it was laid out like The Grove in a rainy place. Good luck tonight, may the rain begin after your event. ETA: Doh! Just saw the date on your post, my bad. But there is a new storm rolling in.

They don't even have awnings or shade to go between stores when the weather is bad. Seems like a bad plan to me. I hope everyone is staying out of harms way with this new downpour today.

I have my doors in my bedroom open right now listening to the rain. I love everything about the rain -- except it makes so many hiking trails way too muddy to hike. But I love the waterfalls and the green that it brings. I hiked over on the Bolinas ridge last weekend and it was amazing. I love hearing the rain at night when we are in the RV. It really puts me to sleep. But I understand you guys in California are getting too much, too fast and too long. One of my friends is showing dogs outside this weekend in southern California. I feel for her and all of you right now.

On my way home from work on Friday I thought there was a small puddle that turned out to be a lake, my car was completely under water for a moment. Scared the shit out of me.
2 years ago a friend of mine was in a car accident during light rain that ultimately killed her fiance 2 months before their wedding. I hate driving in the rain now and it's part of why I don't think jokes about bad weather in San Diego are funny.

Several freeways are closed due to severe flooding, my area has a flash flood warning until 5:30pm, and there is a swift water rescue happening.
It hasn't let up since it started at 9:30am. Its crazy.
The last time I remember heavy rain like this is 5-6 years ago.
Stay safe everyone!

Driving in the rain here is scary business. Crazy drivers plus standing water is not a good combination. I saw so many single-car accidents on Friday coming home from Bakersfield, including one which was upside down. My niece hydroplaned getting on the freeway and nearly went over a steep embankment. I'm happy to be cozy and dry inside. This storm is going to be really bad in the next couple of days for everyone east of us.

I didn't believe them when they said this third storm would be worse than the first two but they were right. It just won't let up. We just watched a swift water rescue of a couple of people who thought they could take a short cut through a raging creek.

I had to drive from South OC to UCLA today. Thankfully made it back and forth safely. Between the downpour and the wind it is insane out there!

Well, now DH is doing a Home Depot run for another drain spout extender. one of them is not far enough out into the planter and away from the garage. We also need rain boots. I never thought, in our drought, we would need rain boots.
At my friend's house, the street is flooded and cars can't be driven out. In another town, sister's lawn and sidewalk is flooded and her sunroom has sprung a leak. I have a feeling my 13.5 mile drive to work tomorrow will be a very slow and cautious one.

Have to come out of lurkdom to note that I do not recall such an intense day of rain in my adult life. Live in Long Beach and was was from mid morning in a constant heavy rain. Our backyard is a lake. The streets were impassable and had neighbors scurrying to move their cars from being on the street to doubling up in each other's driveway. (One did not move it in time and it stalled on the street) The water jumped the curb, parkway and was about a foot up into our lawn. Thankfully our driveways are rather steep and house would never be in danger unless something catastrophic occurred but there was about a 40-60 minute period where it went from kinda a cool novelty to holy shit balls this is a bit scary.
Am keeping an eye on the projected rain for tomorrow even if is okay to get out in the morning i want to be sure I get home. I work in north OC and am not interested in not being able to get back to my neighborhood nor am I willing to risk my new (to us) car
Be safe all

Thankfully her house is on a higher foundation but she didn't know how she was going to get to her car on the street to gas up for work tomorrow. Too much water.

Back then i worked in the South Bay area and lived in OC. I had to get off the freeway (405) on my way home because of flooding. The streets through Long Beach were not any better. That night it took me 3 hours to get home (usually a 45 minute drive in traffic).

papersilly - your sister and I live pretty close to each other! The raised foundation and slope of property kept me from being full panic dualmaestra - I was out of state for college in 1995. My husband did mention a memory he had of that storm today when we were dealing with the worst of it.

The last El Niño was bad. It rained so hard, I watched the water overflow my garage rain gutters because the rain the was too fast and heavy. I'd never seen anything like it.
Speaking of the 405, once when the rain was so strong, the Balboa reservoir overflowed and traffic was at a halt on the 405 going into the Valley where I was living at the time. I had to take the side streets through West LA and that's when I drove through the neighborhood I live in now. Were it not for that heav rain, I would not have known about our neighborhood and later moved here after the Northridge quake. Turns out two disasters led to a good move.

That last house was definitely higher off the sidewalk and her lawn and driveway sloped. Her current house has a flat lawn and that is is currently partially underwater. The neighborhood is super cute though. Lol.

Wait-what? 65 degrees and heaters? We are just a bunch of pussies. There, I said it, and I'll own it. If it's sprinkling, and the temperature drops below 65, I am miserable. Go home, make some soup, get under the covers miserable. Lol!

We owned rental property in Huntington Beach and DH had to rent a pump because it was flooding. But, I think 1984 was even worse. I lived in Fullerton at the time and the roads were completely flooded. I don't know if there was as much rain, but the flood control wasn't as good then as it is now.

This is officially a deluge. Holy, cow, it has been coming down hard all day, and seems even worse right now. My 2 big dogs won't go out in it unless I'm with them, the spoiled babies. I'm so glad we had all of our drains cleaned out last spring. Our driveway used to be a pond when it rained.. This year it would be a lake.
