lol she even throws the hay from the puzzle feeder. Its like her *thing*. I've never seen Oliver do it. Yesterday he like almost galloped around his pen when Allyssa was visiting April. It was like he was all giddy excited. I really hope the snow all melts soon and the outdoor area is safe for them. Oliver looks like he's chomping at the bit to get some outside time. We had three feet of snow on the ground here most of winter. Its amazing how fast a week or two of even 50-60 degree temps can melt it. I've wondered about the April hay showers so I googled "giraffe hay showers" and only get April news. I'm thinking it's just an April thing, but why does she do it, I wonder. It's so darn adorable. LOL she's like a child with that. They go in there, make her pen all nice and clean, and the minute the hay goes in the feeder there's hay all over the ground in 3 minutes flat.

3/27 Evening Report Keepers, vet, and Jordan agree - we are getting there! Her mammary development has continued to slowly increase. Photo in comments. This is Good! We do not expect any additional back end swell, so all judging is now done based on udder changes. You will notice keepers continuing to snap photos of the underside to document changes. April's attitude is good, though she did strike at (and miss) the vet again - we just think she was giving him a hoof (hand) out the door. We are excited to announce the official April The Giraffe clothing store is back up and running! The site is now live, but I would encourage you to shop tomorrow when a few more items are updated and added...a few things are still missing. New items include an April the Giraffe & Calf plush, a blanket, and 1/4 Zip up for ladies! With our transition to new clothing store World Wide Sports Supply, you will see new policies & perks -- Free shipping orders over $125 - and no hassle exchanges! International ship rates are also lower!! www.wwsport.com/r/AprilTheGiraffeThe www.ApriltheGiraffe.com site will be updated tomorrow with the new store link! Consider this your early shopper sneak peak! Everyone have a great evening and keep watching!

OK, I'm new to this April thing.
For those of you with more giraffe midwifery knowledge, what are "wax caps"?

The wax caps are like a cap on her teats that keeps the milk that is loaded with antibodies from leaking out. Almost like a plug. SaveSave

AAP Update: 3/28 Morning Update Progression! The udder continues to fill. Giraffes do not "bag up" with a full udder in the sense of a cow, dog, goat, sow. Their udder is very subtle and tucked between the legs. The development occurs, generally, just prior to birthing. Photo of this morning's mammary growth in comments. Here forward, we are most concerned with this area and will gauge our status from it, until a hoof is waving hello! All other behaviors and appetite are on point. Today, the team will walk the yard to check conditions. Initial reports state we may still have trouble spots. Again, the official April the Giraffe Apparel store is now up and running again! What a surge overnight! We only have a few hundred of the limited April the Giraffe & Calf Plush left!! Order now before they are gone! Find the store link, video updates, giraffemojis, and sponsorship page at www.ApriltheGiraffe.comGiraffe Factoid: On your marks, get set.... Giraffe can run up to speeds of 35 miles per hour, outrunning most horses! Many people ask why our team does not share space with Oliver - simply - he is a bull and can be spunky, unpredictable, and very motivated (wink wink). Direct contact in shared space ended in the Summer of 2015, as Oliver hit maturity, and he and Jordan had a "race" in the giraffe yard. Jordan won...because Oliver let him. There forward, the 'NO SHARED SPACE" rule was implemented for team safety. Photo of Jordan & Oliver, May 16th, 2015 - which was declared Oliver The Giraffe Day in Broome County NY. Oliver was the first giraffe to take up residence again in the area in 50 years!

awww, dang it! the plush giraffe + baby are sold out already!
I may need to get one of the shirts-- I really like the 'I survived giraffe watch' saying; it's definitely how I've felt about this whole experience, lol. You get your hopes up, think something's happening, then-- poop. Wait some more, get excited, then... nuthin'.'
When did the giraffe watching threads on here start, anyway? it's probably only been a few weeks, even though it seems like we've been waiting forever, lol!

I saw the other one live. That was when her tail was up for about 45 minutes and I got all excited. Then a final little pooplet (my new favourite word, btw) and the show was over for the time being.
I love how watching a beautiful animal doing pretty much nothing is so compelling. It's like Big Brother for giraffes.

Omg I feel so sorry for those giraffes! Oliver is galloping around his TINY enclosure. Poor thing, he should be running around the savannah. It should be against the law to keep this kind of animal in a northern climate zone where they have winter.

Oliver was having some seriously frisky, galloping around his stall moments just now. Even April stopped eating to watch.

I've been watching for a while, and I think the last time they were able to be outside was the day before that. Actually, I don't think April went out even though her door was open, preferring to stay in her stall. I'd be going stir crazy a bit too, though. I know they wanted to let them out this weekend, but the yard must still have icy spots. They were worried about letting them out with icy spots.

I agree, however Giraffes are in danger of becoming extinct and through my newfound curiosity about Giraffes I have learned a bit about the conservation efforts of places such as Animal Adventure Park. They are giving these magnificent creatures a chance. It's sad to think my future grandchildren may not know many animals, have to ability to see these animals except in books, because so many are very close to being extinct. Sad.

She sure seems to be nibbling at her belly a lot lately too. I can't imagine what a baby giraffe moving about as much as we've witnessed would feel like. I know Giraffes have very thick skin, thank goodness! Lol but man that movement looks uncomfortable. I had my son at 26 weeks gestation so never did feel kicks or even movement so all the motion in her belly is absolutely fascinating to me.

That is amazing, that the calf inside her is so active that its movement is so visible. lol she's having hay showers right now. I thought maybe she put the hay on the ground for later "snacking". But no, she sometimes eats it and sometimes showers herself all over again with it. So I give up on the why of it, lol!

The waxy plugs are also found on horses before they give birth (cattle and sheep too). Usually a sign that birth will be in a few days - at least with the more domesticated creatures.

That makes sense, seeing as they are in that hoofed animal family. It definitely seems like she's playful while she's doing it. I hope it is really soon, for her sake as much as mine. I can't imagine carrying a 6ft, 150lb calf, no matter how big an animal you are to start with.
