Animal Adventure Park Facebook Update:
04-15-17 April gives birth!!
4/14 Morning Update
April is already out and enjoying the sunshine for the day. Grain intake remains moderate. Light discharge continues. Otherwise, all is normal and well - as expected. The only real drastic changes we will see from here is active labor - no much more change / development can occur.
Again - please excuse the sporadic/tardy post times this month. We are in construction/opening mode and routines are no longer routines on the April the Giraffe side of our operation.
On that note - back to work! Lots to do, and little time!

Giraffe Factoid: Numbers Game We Cannot Lose!
Estimations as of 2016, indicate that there are approximately 97,500 members of Giraffa in the wild, with around 1,144 in captivity. Conservation and preservation efforts are no joke and need your help now!

4/13 Evening Update
Not much to say this evening, as we covered quite a bit earlier in our live video Q&A and when crashing the Vet Visit with April.
April is doing great with light discharge. Appetite is so so.
Some people inquired about Oliver's behavior with April earlier this evening. He was not being "aggressive" -but he was certainly showing his dominance. You may have noticed his playful necking behaviors (not true aggressive necking behavior), his blocking her movements, etc. This is all part of the fun an games of a young bull. At no time did he pose and serious threat to April of her calf...her laying down puts more force on the womb/calf, than light head bumps from Oliver.

4/12 Evening Update
Carrot Cam
All remains as reported earlier.
Big and happy. We did note significant movement from the calf today during observation times.
April had a few visitors (industry friends) from out of state that were shocked to see just how large she is. The camera just doesn't capture actual size/proportions.

Tomorrow we will be live from the giraffe deck with Oliver! Watch for a FB live notification.

4/12 Morning Update
All is well in the Giraffe Barn - doors are open and yard time has already begun! Physical body condition remains the same, comfort level has not changed, behavior is on point.
Today's photo is of the udder, to show mammary development. For any hoaxers or #Fakenews stories questioning April and the pregnancy - a quick biology lesson - animals do not develop milk unless supporting a pregnancy. Furthermore - giraffes do not develop large udders like cattle etc, so to see this much development truly suggests calving in the near future.
Patience is a virtue! Remember, the Giraffe Cam was not set-up to capture an immediate birth - it was set-up to capture a process. Mind you, we did expect a calf sooner than this - but that is all part of the journey!
---------------------------------
Giraffe Factoid: Giraffe Milk -Does a Body Good
A baby giraffe's body! There was chatter at the beginning of the year about giraffe milk as a Super Food. We don't know about that but what we can cite is; a study in 1962 (yes it's old) showed that many vitamin levels in giraffe’s milk were the same as those in cow’s milk, but the levels of vitamin A, vitamin B12 and nicotinic acid were all higher in giraffe milk. Meanwhile, giraffe milk is much higher in fat than cow’s milk – 12.5 percent compared to 3.5 percent. All that fat might sound like a turnoff, but recent research has shown that higher levels of dairy fat can also lead to a lower risk of diabetes.

4/11 Evening Update
April's condition remains the same: happy, big and beautiful. She enjoyed extended yard time today in the warm weather and sun.
This evening's photo is from our exclusive content library accessible to Labor Text Alert subscribers. Oliver and April have both been enjoying their new enrichment gift.
We do apologize for changes in routine schedule and tardiness of posts. Now being in construction mode, preparing the park for open team members are working extended hours while encountering many daily variables. We will continue to do our best to keep you updated and informed on this giraffe journey.

4/11 Morning Update
April is reported to have her great demeanor this morning and a standard appetite. There is "wetness" around the back end, which is likely due to tail swishing of discharge. She is outdoors as I type this update! Got to love the return of warm weather!
Short and sweet today!
----------------------
Giraffe Conservation Factoid: No Ivory - so what's the Draw?
Giraffes are hunted for their hides and meat, and also - of all things - their tails!
The tail is highly prized by many African cultures. The desire for good-luck bracelets, fly whisks, and thread for sewing or stringing beads have led people to kill the giraffe for its tail alone.

4/10 Morning Update
Early morning observations indicate no significant changes in physical appearance. As stated in posts prior - we do not expect any further physical change. We are waiting for increased pacing to indicate an active labor situation has begun, in addition to pushing/contractions. So, be watchful of behavioral changes!
Giraffes will have a beautiful day in the yard with 70 Degree temperatures on the horizon! We will capture some great shots of Oliver and April outdoors, along with staff and share those with you late day today thru the text subscription service.

Giraffe Factoid: There has been Giraffe (Zarafa) Hysteria Before
In 1827 the first giraffe ever seen in France, became an instant celebrity in Paris. Michael Allin in Zarafa chronicles her impact on the French:
"Zarafamania gripped Paris and crowds rioted around her as she was paraded through the city and presented to the king. Women imitated her with their hair styles high, a la Girafe, and the men wore fashionably giraffique hats and ties. In the magazine of the day there were instructions for tying a gentleman's cravat a la Girafe."
4/9 Evening Update
Our big girl seems to be moving around quite a bit! That is a good thing! Moms will get very "Pacey" before and during birth....we will see if it is any indication as to what is to come. All else is well.
April enjoyed yard time today! We have opened her door for weeks and she has only stood in the doorway; but today! - of all days! - she ventured out! Tonight's photo is of that time outside and tomorrow we will send more exclusive content to our text subscribers - of today and tomorrows escapades!

4/9 Morning Update
Allysa and Joel both reported major movement and bulging of the belly, noting the left side - appeared to have a leg, joint, neck or Something sticking out! April consumed all food offered last night and team noted further filling of the front teats. Some changes in manure size last night also. There are many things we look at and document in this process!
Yard to time will be granted today as temperatures climb!
In addition to last nights wallaby Joey appearances from the pouch, our kangaroo Joey appears to now be peach fuzz covered, and will also soon be poking out!
-------
The live cam had some down time yesterday, ready assured our team works quickly to resolve any issues on our end! No reason for concern and the conspiracy theories can remain at the back of your mind. Just a simple outage.
-------
The last and final round of plush will hit the online store in the next 12-24 hours. There will be a ship delay due to volume - but what in this process of April watching hasn't been "delayed"? Ha!
--------
Text alert subscribers - it took only 28 minutes to hit every single one of you yesterday! This is the fastest text alert to this volume of receivers ever done by our service provided! Everyone is one team April - from keepers to Tech team!

Giraffe Factoid: The beginning
Oliver joined us in May 2015 age 3
April joined us September 2015 age 13
First observed breeding behavior was October 2015. This started our counting for when to possibly expect a calf. It is quite obvious conception did not occurs until months later, but it allowed our team to prep, be prepared, and trained appropriately for the big moment.
4/8 Evening Update
All is well on the giraffe front! April keeps us waiting. Keeper and vet reports today have no remarkable change. Though this may seem redundant - it's actually a good thing! Full udders, huge belly, mom ready - we just need the labor process to begin - so we are waiting for that final stage.
Temperatures will climb tomorrow and then we are off to a beautiful week!
...........
Thank you all that joined us for Spring baby animal photos today at the Oakdale Mall - we will be there again tomorrow! Info in our events listings.

Tonight we share a video from Dr Tim's end of visit treat session.
4/8 Morning Update
Allysa reports April remains the same as evening prior. Not much other to report on that front. She is big, full of milk, baby is kicking, just not coming out!
The giraffes are really enjoying their new enrichment item!
We have some fun photos of the enrichment toy use and April meeting a mini-Geoffrey the giraffe - to our Labor Alert Text Subscribers today! Want to enroll? aprilthegiraffealert.com/
Artistic Prints of "April in Waiting" should hit the store today and there is rumor of new plush coming.
Giraffe Factoid: Super Mom
As we have discussed, giraffes can defend themselves with the power of their kick - which is bone crushing to predators such as lions, hyenas, etc. Mother giraffes, will attempt to stand over their calves during attacks. Thwarting off attackers with her deadly kicks.

4/7 Evening Update
April's Calendar Girl: April
Keeper report remains relatively similar to morning! Great appetite and good nature!
So, we thought we would share another Dr Tim Update:
-------------------
Well Giraffe Fans, here we are approaching another weekend without a giraffe calf... <sigh> Tonight I decided to have a little pep talk with April to see if we could try to nail down a day, week, month or any sort of time frame... In this photo she is pretty much telling us what she thinks about that plan...
On a more serious note, everything looks great with our big girl. She is acting completely normal. Her appetite has returned. She is still showing us all the signs that she is almost ready. There is no reason for worry about her or the calf's health. She just isn't quite ready yet...

- Yes, we are aware of the malicious and irresponsible reporting of an online story from a TV Channel of the same network as a prior "whoops", that is once again (this is their second misstep), spreading and promoting rumors, suggesting we are lying and defrauding the world and the pregnancy is a hoax. Anyone with eyes and sense can see April is with calf. #Fakenews is REAL!
---------------------------
Have a great evening and lets hope for a weekend addition to our giraffe family!
4/7 Morning Update
Hungry Hungry Hip....errr Giraffe!
Keepers report is that April has consumed all of last evening's grain offering, and continues to eat her hay. Udders are full, wax caps have reappeared (as they will come and go at times), and she is very much "herself".
The new enrichment item (a newer puzzle feeder) has been added today after a quick tweak - which delayed its application yesterday. We will get to see the giraffes' response today!

All things April the Giraffe are found on her official site - anything else is likely NOT OURS! Remain vigilant - new stream of fakes and frauds seem to have hit.

Giraffe Factoid: When are Oliver and April's Birthdays?
While we have a rough idea of their birth dates, we choose to celebrate them during our Park's Celebration of World Giraffe Day! This day is celebrated each year on June 21st, the longest day of the year to honor our longest necked animals! The effort and day was initiated by The Giraffe Conservation Foundation.
We always celebrate this day at our Park on Father's Day to ensure families can enjoy and learn together! What a day it will be this year for Oliver: World Giraffe Day, Birthday, and first Father's Day!

4/6 Morning Update
"Shape of You"
Allysa's morning report is of significant change in April's shape. Her body/belly is much less beach balled, as the bulges have streamlined. Perhaps suggesting a new position of calf...we hope for launch sequence!
......
We can't help but feel each day and night, as we snap and post our photos and provide updates on body change and development of April, that we shouldn't have the song lyrics of Ed Sheeran's Shape of You looped and playing;
Every day discovering something brand new
I'm in love with your body
Oh—I—oh—I—oh—I—oh—I
I'm in love with your body
Of course the context is completely different, but no less obsessive in nature!

Giraffe Factoid:
Typically a giraffe can eat up to 75lbs of food per day!
Giraffes spend almost their entire day (16-20 hours a day) eating! When not eating new food, they are chewing their cud (which we discussed in a recent prior factoid post).
4/5 Evening Update
Long one
Corey noted some changes this evening. April's backend has some significant "bulging" occurring. Photo in comments. She was very "with it" but then became very distracted and as Corey put it, "would have walked right through me". Though sounding intimidating; this behavior is what we will see - consistently - when in active labor. She will walk through her strong contractions and push push push.
All else is well and fresh air and the outdoors was enjoyed at length today!

We wish everyone a good evening (or day) and as we've been saying - be patient - as hard as it is! Soon enough - it will all have been worth the wait and the watch.
4/4 Morning Update
Morning Keeper report is that April continues to ignore grain, and back end swell is noticeably larger than day prior. We, like many of you, sat up in bed or were inches from our screens a few times last night. She keeps us guessing. Rest assured, all is well, there is no distress, no pain - she is simply (but slowly) advancing. From what we have been told from prior facility - when she has her calves - she calves very quickly - which has us all on our toes as it is!
Giraffes should get yard time today - though we will watch the skys - as thunder storms are predicted and Lightning is a bad thing for giraffes!
This will be our last post about text alert concerns; still a very small percentage of users have not verified their number with the system - but the resources are in place to do so and help!

Giraffe Factoid: "Are you going to finish that?"
Giraffes are ruminants - which means their multi-chamber stomach processes their browse differently in each area, and allows them to regurgitate the food, to be chewed again to gain more nutrients.
You may see April with what looks like chipmunk cheeks, this is when she has a fresh mouth of reguuuuurrr..we mean food!
4/3 Evening Update
Lights Out Early!
April has remained off grain again today, toys with her hay, turns up her nose at lettuce, but likes a DR Tim Carrot Treat!
Tonight will be another long night as we wait for April to decide just when is right!
The giraffes loved the beautiful weather outdoors today!
Many of you tuned in this evening to see lights out early. With normal routine returning of warm temps and yard time, coupled with the thought that a natural light cycle of the dusk and dawn type may help entice/speed up our labor, you will see us change our treat time and lights out routine to earlier in the day. When exactly? Depends on quite a bit...so keep watching!
Yes, a test text was sent out today but not to the full list of subscribers -- it was matter of testing the launch/execution of the system. Good night (or good day)
4/3 Morning Update
GENDER REVEAL
This morning keeper report is no interest in grain and only smelling lettuce treats. No discomfort evident, no distress - normal progression as expected in the process. Many of you may have witnessed what appeared as "pushing" contractions last night. The team and vet were in communication regarding these and were documented throughout the night. Let's see if April's plan is to break up your work week!
Photo of current mammary development in comments.
GENDER REVEAL

4/2 Evening Update - a long one
Keepers continue to report the same physical and behavioral observations. The giraffes did enjoy some outside time today, though April chose to enjoy the sunshine and air from her doorway.
Tonight we share some answers and feedback from the vet on questions he receives in public forums.
"Faking out Dr. Tim"
So the timeline for my 24-48 hour prediction is rapidly coming to an end... not surprising is the fact that we still have no calf and we still don't have a giraffe in Labor! Pretty much all of her clinical signs from a couple days ago are still true. She just isn't quite ready to give the world what it wants.
To answer a few question I have seen on the web in various places: no, she isn't late; no, she isn't overdue; no, I'm not concerned she is "taking so long", nor should you be. Yes she remains happy and comfortable (considering the circumstances). Yes, she will have this calf when she is good and ready. No, public outcry won't change that. No, I cannot induce her, nor should we want to... (those are human constructs which don't apply to large wild animals and only endanger the life of April and her calf )Yes, it will be awesome when the calf arrives. No, watching after April is not my only job. Yes, we have been watching her for a very long time... enjoy the <free> show people. Get more popcorn.
You all know how much I love to be wrong about my predictions, but such is life. I'll keep all posted and will let you know when the baby is on its way. It really shouldn't be much longer, I'm just not going to tell you my guesstimate anymore.
........

4/2 Morning Update
This morning, keepers report increased discharge, continued lack of interest in food, full udders. April also continues to be a bit out of character. We continue to watch and wait.
Keepers feel they will be able to get the giraffes yard time today, as yard conditions have returned to safe and temperatures promise to climb from the 30s to 50s today. Perhaps that will "shake" things up!

4/1 Evening Update
Joke is on us! But, don't worry - we'll text ya!
I would be lying if I said I wasn't hoping for an April Fools baby!
Though the evening is not over, April's relaxed nature and lack of urgency has us guessing we will get through midnight before the calf joins us.
April continues to ignore her grain, zones in and out of awareness, exhibits soft contraction indications, and is even producing manure size and consistency hinting of a birth - though we are not yet in what we will call "active labor". Our big girl is comfortable, confident, and continues to keep her composure - better than the rest of us!
TEXT ALERT SYSTEM:
The Labor Alert and Baby Update text system is now ready for you to subscribe! It will provide you immediate updates, and exclusive content, from labor to May 31st. This will be your first line for updates from labor, to first steps, to first day outside, and more.

This evening's photo is of April and my Niece at dusk. Happy Birthday Reagan!
4/1 Afternoon Update
The vet has made his second visit of the day.
When we thought she could not "bag up" further - she most certainly has.
April is not touching her grain, but is accepting carrots.
You may see her lifting each leg, pinning ears, dazing off, raising tail - those behaviors are what we want to see and expect to increase in frequency.
We will continue to keep you posted.
ETA:4/1 Morning Update
please share this post to shutdown fake youtube channels and redirect to the official page.
This is not a hoax!
The fact the cam went down this morning didn't help our cause by any means; but we are back up! We have received some lovely snow overnight and this morning, which may have contribute dto our signal issues.

Keepers and Vet have been on site - report is that April continues to be out of normal behavior and show signs of contractions. We are not announcing active labor at this time - as we will wait until there is NO QUESTION - to ensure our followers know to hunker down and wait!
We are still working on the text alert system, as the source we had did not pan out.
3/31 Evening Update
Keeper report - April has zero interest in food. Behavior is extremely off. Signs of contractions continue.
Vet report -
Here are the signs that I'm happy to be seeing: significant changes to her "back end" including vulvar swelling, laxity and a thick, gooey discharge. Mammary development including milk let-down and some occasional dripping. Her behavior has changed drastically from yesterday to today. She is less engaging, hesitant to eat her feed (and treats) and unresponsive to a lot of various stimuli. You will also see her do a few things including standing and staring off into space as well as stretching her neck and back legs. If you watch carefully you will see her abdominal wall tense up during those episodes. You'll also see a lot more squinting and just odd behavior. Also important to note is the amount and size of her fecal output. Everything she is doing is surely pointing to her going into labor soon. - Not much has changed from the morning but I suspect she will go quickly.
--------
It looks like we will have an April Fools baby!
Who could have ever predicted this, unfolding as it has. The perfect ending. April - waited for April!
We will keep you posted should things get interesting this evening. Keepers are onsite overnight and support staff are on stand by.
3/31 Morning Update
The staff have been onsite with April all morning, Dr Tim was called and onsite within minutes. All observations, behavior, and predictions suggest a calf today, tonight - we would be shocked to get through the weekend without our newest addition.
This is what we have all been waiting for!
Keep April and our team in your positive thoughts.
Www.aprilthegiraffe.com is your source for all things April. We encourage you to shop NOW if you want April Gear before supply becomes backordered and the sale ends.
We will keep the world posted.
Our team will be live from the nursery barn at 9:15 this morning with updates and a visit with our baby goats!
3/30 Evening Update
It was clear to all watching, the evening keeper check was cut short by April. Her behavior is very off from normal demeanor; this is to be expected. Mammary development photos were not captured, but udders reported as full. It should not be much longer!
We hope to have an official text alert system available for subscription tomorrow. Subscribing will get you a Labor Alert text, but also exclusive texts, info, photo links, and calf updates over the coming months. Much of the content will be exclusive to the text alert community. A portion of the fee will get kicked back to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation for wild conservation of giraffes.
When that is available - we will post on all social media platforms and our websites.
Tune in tomorrow morning to Good Morning America for a live segment from the Giraffe Barn. GMA crews and Toys R Us will be on site for the LAST media interview before we have a calf (if one is not born this evening)!
We wish everyone a good evening (or day)! Keep watching - we are in the home stretch!

3/30 Morning Update
Like many of you, we spent the evening watching our April. She continues to progress. Mammary development stays remains as filled udders, and will likely not get much Larger. Discharge continues to be present. Appetite is so - so this morning.
We continue calf countdown.

3/29 Evening Update
"Taco Induction"
Keep on laughing! Our sense of humor has kept us sane throughout this entire process! Tonight, I will share with you Dr Tim's report to his following friends and colleagues.
"Ok Gang... if you have been watching today, you should start getting excited... we are seeing almost all the signs of birth happening within the coming days... of course, my schedule is crazy for the next few days so naturally, we will pick the worst time possible. Hah. In an effort to speed things along I am launching "Operation Taco Induction"... let's see what happens. (Not in Labor...) yet. - disclaimer - she didn't actually get a taco. I'm not ridiculous."
Keepers report continued discharge and mammary development. Appetite was off this morning - back this evening!

Rest with one eye open tonight!
Thank you all!
3/29 Late Morning Update
We apologize for the late update but it is for good reason. We will not confirm active labor, but we do have discharge that would suggest the count down to calf has begun! Mammary development is on point and picture is in comments. We will keep everyone posted throughout the day with developments. Our team and Vet are on standby. We could be hours away or days - so do not stop your day - but certainly don't stop watching!
For those still asking, the Apparel store is open and processing orders as they are made. The April the Giraffe Plush is nearing sell out status! Act fast, we have more than one clock to race now!

Giraffe Factoid: Baby Talk
To readdress what to expect! From hooves to baby on the ground - could be as quick as 30-60 minutes. Baby will be on average 150# and 6' tall. Within an hour, we want to see baby on its feet. Yes, baby will stumble, fall, and face plant - but it is all part of the process and we cannot intervene. Once standing, we want baby to nurse within the next 60-120 minutes to get the essential colostrum. Our team will not intervene unless we absolutely have to. You will not see us in the stall, but we are all there waiting.
We will stay live on youtube throughout the process.
Tragedy can strike, and we are prepared, but have faith we will have a safe and sound delivery and calf. Hooves crossed.

3/28 Evening Update
And away we go!
April continues to progress in front of our eyes! Mammary development has increased again since this morning! Updated photo in comments. She has been a great sport all day. Very distracted with local group BingPop on site this evening. Traveling from out of town, view their site and APP for things to do during your stay! Broome County is a wealth of "Best Kept Secrets".
My prediction was today, as many of you know, and that too will go out the window with my priors - but we are close! Hooves crossed!
The April the Giraffe and Calf plush sold out overnight -- we have a 14" April the Giraffe Plush available now but that is also limited! Act fast and grab your apparel - numbers are limited - as is time!
Find the store link and other April links at www.Aprilthegiraffe.com
With her current progression, each day we come closer to the anticipated birth and arrival of our newest member of Animal Adventure!
Have a great evening (or Day) and keep watching - all can change in a few minutes!
Photo of a special guest enjoying the fun that our giraffe encounters can be! Have you been giraffe licked today? WHY NOT!
3/28 Morning Update
Progression! The udder continues to fill. Giraffes do not "bag up" with a full udder in the sense of a cow, dog, goat, sow. Their udder is very subtle and tucked between the legs. The development occurs, generally, just prior to birthing. Photo of this morning's mammary growth in comments. Here forward, we are most concerned with this area and will gauge our status from it, until a hoof is waving hello!
All other behaviors and appetite are on point.
Today, the team will walk the yard to check conditions. Initial reports state we may still have trouble spots.
Again, the official April the Giraffe Apparel store is now up and running again! What a surge overnight! We only have a few hundred of the limited April the Giraffe & Calf Plush left!! Order now before they are gone! Find the store link, video updates, giraffemojis, and sponsorship page at www.ApriltheGiraffe.com
Giraffe Factoid: On your marks, get set....
Giraffe can run up to speeds of 35 miles per hour, outrunning most horses! Many people ask why our team does not share space with Oliver - simply - he is a bull and can be spunky, unpredictable, and very motivated (wink wink). Direct contact in shared space ended in the Summer of 2015, as Oliver hit maturity, and he and Jordan had a "race" in the giraffe yard. Jordan won...because Oliver let him. There forward, the 'NO SHARED SPACE" rule was implemented for team safety.
Photo of Jordan & Oliver, May 16th, 2015 - which was declared Oliver The Giraffe Day in Broome County NY. Oliver was the first giraffe to take up residence again in the area in 50 years!
3/27 Evening Report
Keepers, vet, and Jordan agree - we are getting there! Her mammary development has continued to slowly increase. Photo in comments. This is Good! We do not expect any additional back end swell, so all judging is now done based on udder changes. You will notice keepers continuing to snap photos of the underside to document changes. April's attitude is good, though she did strike at (and miss) the vet again - we just think she was giving him a hoof (hand) out the door.
We are excited to announce the official April The Giraffe clothing store is back up and running! The site is now live, but I would encourage you to shop tomorrow when a few more items are updated and added...a few things are still missing. New items include an April the Giraffe & Calf plush, a blanket, and 1/4 Zip up for ladies! With our transition to new clothing store World Wide Sports Supply, you will see new policies & perks -- Free shipping orders over $125 - and no hassle exchanges! International ship rates are also lower!!

The www.ApriltheGiraffe.com site will be updated tomorrow with the new store link! Consider this your early shopper sneak peak!
Everyone have a great evening and keep watching!
3/27 Morning Update
April had us watching the monitors close last night. Her behavior was interesting last night, and is noted as continued this morning. She is very relaxed, tail has been raising on and off for periods of time. Wax caps are in place but we have noted a significant mammary change! Photo is comments section! We are getting there!
Any changes will be posted throughout the day.
Today, we share with you the video link to a highly demanded, up close (but quick) video of April and Allysa. Their bond is evident - a true trusting relationship.
Giraffe Factoid:
The hoof of a giraffe is about 12" or the size of your dinner plate! Think about that at your next meal!! In the wild, hooves are naturally maintained by the hard and coarse ground surface. In captive management programs, we mimic that natural substrate for hoof care - often why you will often not see green grass (North American grass) in giraffe yards. Their entry and exit from their barn also has a specific material, and the barn floors are finished to promote hoof trimming. If the hoof is not able to be naturally trimmed, giraffes can and will train to stand for the largest manicure you have ever seen!

3/26 Evening Update.
Keeper report is increased calf activity in comparison to this morning and last evening.
All other development is as previously reported. Appetite is strong and demeanor is good.
Staff will spend time tomorrow trying to expedite the yard thaw - to get our giraffes some exposure outside. Stella sure won't let us forget she was here!
We expect the online apparel store to open again tomorrow! We will announce the site being back up once we get the word!
Hope all had an enjoyable weekend and are ready for another week of April watching!
Photo is Oliver stealing a smooch - while April steals some hay! Photo from www.newyorkupstate.com
3/26 Morning Update
This morning's keeper report notes just how large April appears! Also, baby is extremely "quiet" this morning... calm before the storm? There are notable bulges on April's left side today.
All other physical development remains as reported prior.
With the new week starting ahead; April's Apparel store will be back on line (likely Monday). Once the site is live, you will be able to access from www.Aprilthegiraffe.com. The relaunch also brings a new distributor. We thank Zappia Athletic Products, Inc. for a stellar job handling the thousands of orders they received and continue to process! To lighten Zappia's load, we will have Worldwide Sport Supply - Wrestling (another local firm) stepping in, to produce, process and ship all orders placed.
A big thank you to the many of you sending mail, packages, and gifts to our team and giraffes - and other animals! Local firm ScottTech Integrated Solutions sent a pallet of romaine - for which our many animals thank you for! We appreciate your kind words, stories, and generosity.
Have an amazing day!
Giraffe Factoid:
Male giraffes determine if a female is fertile by tasting their urine.
They then engage in the Flehmen Response. What is that? THAT is your homework! Look it up! You have seen many animals do it before - and now you will know why.
Today's Photo of our boy Oliver!
3/25 Morning Update
This morning's keeper report is baby has settled down compared to yesterday's continued judo chop marathon. Appetite is consistent, and observed changes from last evening are same as reported prior.
This morning we share with you the Q&A session we did live with Toys R Us yesterday from the giraffe barn. Some repeated content and answers, some new material, and more importantly a look into our team.
We are so happy to be working with Toys"R"Us and further our message and mission to bring April's Journey to you and support Giraffe Conservation!
Giraffe Factoid:
Is in today's shared video! Enjoy!

3/24 Evening Update
April had a busy day, but handled it like a champ and continues to progress. This afternoon's vet observations suggests milk has begun to fill the right udders. Wax caps remain and back end swell has continued to maintain a significant size. Appetite strong, moodiness returned this evening.
We apologize for this early evening's cam malfunction, but as you know, we cannot control all factors. We react as fast as possible and ensure anything within our control is functioning as expected.
Oliver and April have enjoyed their enrichment puzzle feeders (3rd attempt was the charm)! We have received concern that its too straining or a tease to have the puzzle feeders hung as they are -- let us reassure you -- the enrichment items are doing just as we had hoped! They stimulate the giraffes' minds and bodies, encouraging them to work for their rewards! If it was easy - it would just be "feeding them".
Tomorrow, we hope to have some neat footage available to you, uploaded onto our youtube channel. If you haven't yet, please visit and subscribe to our channel for all the latest Animal Adventure video updates and more!
Watch for new video tomorrow!

3/23 Evening Update
April has many thinking tonight is the night, as chat rooms and social media postings question her behavior and positioning. We will wait to see what the night brings. Both Keepers and Vet report further back end swell, no change in discharge or lactation.
Temperatures are starting to rise, snow is almost gone - outside yard time will soon return!
We leave you with a photo from Oliver's First summer with us, while still a bachelor... Jordan and he had a great bond during this transition period (before maturity), and we believe that's evident in this photo - taken during Critter Camp: Giraffes Giraffes Giraffes while addressing the kids. "I'VE GOT YOUR BACK"
3/23 Morning Update
April was notabley slower moving this morning at breakfast. Wax caps are still present and her back end swell (as you can see) continues to be significant. Belly growth from last week to this week is still mind blowing - she has to fit a 6', 150# calf somewhere!
The twin goats born late last night are doing great and have been confirmed 1 boy and 1 girl.
We're excited to announce that we’ve team up with Toys ‘R Us!
Both Animal Adventure Park and Toys 'R Us have the common goal of bringing awareness to the plight of the giraffe as well as the need to create a sustainable future for them. Made possible in part by their sponsorship, Animal Adventure Park will be donating $25,000 to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF)!
GCF is the only non-governmental organization in the world that concentrates only on the conservation and management of giraffe, in the wild, in Africa – we are thrilled to be able to support such a worthy cause!
GCF founders Stephanie & Julian send their love, thanks, and support all the way from Namibia! We look forward to a long relationship, and just the beginning of our support to their foundation and giraffes!

3/22 Evening Update
We are a hair behind with this update because we wanted to share with you a photo of new life!
Upon Allysa's walk back to night quarters, from the giraffe barn, she came across "fatty patty" one of our pygmy goats - that just had twins! So mom and kids have been moved into the nursery barn, along side our llama and cria, to relax and bond! Why is it always the coldest night?
April continues to be herself - though a bit moody end of day but the vet reported a happy girl earlier this afternoon. As you can see from the cam, her back end is huge, tail is up, aaaannnddd we wait!
Today brought many developments!
We are so excited to announce some amazing partnerships! As you can see, Toys R Us, has joined forces and done some amazing this for conservation. Stay tuned tomorrow for potentially life changing news for wild giraffes!
photo: Momma goat and minutes old babies!
3/22 Morning Update
A Quick One!
Giraffe puzzle feeders return at 9:30 am for your viewing pleasure - lets see how long they last!
Keepers report April is very moody and off from her normal self -- this is a good thing. Back end continues to progress to our satisfaction.
We hope by the weekend or early next week the giraffes will return outside. Enrichment is used to stimulate the animals' body and mind! Enrichment for our giraffes is increased during longer indoor stays.
Giraffe Factoid:
Giraffes spots and patterns are like fingerprints! No two giraffes are the same!
3/21
Evening Update
Keeper Report: April seems to be a bit more "off", dare we say agitated today (later day). April has had some serious back end swell and pulse today, witnessed by Jordan & Corey prior to enrichment install. Both giraffes enjoyed their newest enrichment toys until Oliver broke his and we went back to the drawing board. Improvements made and the will be re-introduced tomorrow around 9:30 am EST - be sure to tune in!
What the heck was the vet doing today and why was April put off?
Vet Report: "So if you were watching me in with her this evening (6:30ish) you would have seen a fairly cranky giraffe... you also would have seen me in there with a little white box looking thing. This is my doppler. Over the past few weeks I've been trying to desensitize her to seeing, hearing and being touched by it. It's easy to forget that she is a big and dangerous creature, you have to be real careful with how far you push them.
Odds & Ends:
April the Giraffe Apparel store will be back up next week! The store is working hard to send out more items than are in most stores in your local mall!
www.Aprilthegiraffe.com continues to have all official links and most current live feed link!

Good night world from Animal Adventure!3/20 Evening Update
"It Takes a Village"
This evening I thought I would share with you a different perspective. Often people ask for the vet report - well here it is in his words to his following colleagues:
April Update - still happy, still healthy, still not in labor. Predicting these things is next to impossible, so I go by physical and behavioral changes that the staff and I observe each day. In theory, that helps us kind of hone in on a window where she could go into labor... unlike a dog, cat, human, horse, cow, goat, etc there simply isn't enough consistent data to say tomorrow she'll go into labor. When you are working with a world-wide spectacle you can imagine how aggravating that is. So today not much in the physical change department but behaviorally she is a little off. She didn't come running over when I got there and took a bit of coaxing to kiss the camera for carrots after my visit.
There is a team of people behind ensuring April is happy and healthy, but also in maintaining, controlling, and addressing the worldwide attention and inquiry.
Tomorrow, we will be installing some new enrichment items that will be seen from camera view. a bumper for "tossing around" and also a puzzle feeder! Install should be around 10 am EST - so watch the Live Feed!
Good night everyone!
3/20 Morning Update
Good Morning Everyone and Happy Spring!
Keeper report is that belly/baby continue to stay towards the back end. Observation over night peaked our interest a few times, but nothing to report just yet. April is eating but not as ravenous as days prior.
No pressure April the Giraffe, but April the month isn't far away!
Today's photo is also part of our Giraffe Factoid:
June 21st, each year, is known as World Giraffe Day! The longest day is dedicated to the longest necked animals of the world! Celebrate with us, or your hometown zoo or animal park, and learn about and how to support giraffe conservation. Our partner through April's Journey and World Giraffe Day is the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.
Photo is of Jordan & Allysa providing Oliver and April their annual World Giraffe Day treat at noon!
3/19 Evening Update
"Holy Smokes"
Keeper report is "holy smokes" baby is sticking out. It is very evident in visual observations that the calf is moving up and sticking out! All are happy with progress, we are not in labor at this time.
Temperatures are warming and snow is melting. We hope to have the giraffes outside soon! Excitingly - a new batch of enrichment items should be arriving tomorrow and will be installed for viewer enjoyment!
Hope all had a great weekend and we look forward to another week and hopefully the arrival of our long awaited calf.
3/18. Morning Update
Keepers report continued giraffe calf cartwheels inside mom's belly! Appetite is strong, but notice minimal "hay showers" this morning. Perhaps her mind is elsewhere.
Belly has noticeably dropped further, keepers report almost a ...get ready for it... egg shape to her now.
Any of you watching this early morning witnessed some beautiful moments between mom and her belly. As it shows in photo, April napped with her extended back head onto her belly.
Giraffe Factoid:
Giraffes have long thought to have been silent; however it was recently proven giraffes will hum to one another, outside of human hearing capacity range. Is April "talking" to her baby?
3/17 Late Morning / Afternoon Update
Sorry for today's delay; an entire group of leprechauns were unaccounted for upon Morning checks. Resources have been dedicated to leprechaun trap production and implementation. Please make your own traps - and let us know if you catch anything!
In actuality, many emails and meetings this morning caused a posting delay which was not caught until now.
That said, April continues to do great. No concerns on our end - and we are anxious to see what the weekend brings! Perhaps a St Patrick's Day baby?
We received an alarming number of emails again this morning suggesting we didn't feed the giraffes. In one last desperate plea for those to cease, and explanation - do not worry! The giraffes are cared for every morning, afternoon, and evening without any reminders. Their shared enrichment feeder is not their main food source; and those main sources and their waters are off screen and filled from outside the stalls. Rest easy! Since 2015 we have cared for our long Neck friends without issue or outside input on it.
Here is a photo from a sunny day that even caused our giraffes to squint! Here is hoping for more warm weather soon!
Giraffe Factoid of the day!
Many people are aware of the conservation need for elephants, but few know that there are 4x as many elephants in Africa as there are giraffes! Does that put into perspective just how much help these animals need?
The struggle is real. The time to act is now.
3/16. EVENING UPDATE
Keeper report is increased swelling in the backend and significant baby kicks from within. Vet reports all is well and no reason for concern. April is posturing quite a bit which is keeping us on our toes! We will see what the weekend brings.
Today was spent digging paths for keepers to access exhibits, for animals to access watering stations and more yard space, and clearing roadways for fuel deliveries etc.
We have to thank the handful of individuals that assisted in this process. Thank you for making our animals lives better, and keeper work -a touch easier under the conditions.
Tomorrow I encourage you to offer a random act of kindness. Pay it forward as they say! I know I am.
Here are a few shots from the park and what Stella left behind.
Good night world.
3/13 Evening Update
Are you on the edge of your seat?
Afternoon and evening keeper and vet checks continue to indicate significant changes in April. Her back end has become significantly larger and relaxed, motion and pulsing in this area has been noted, and discharge has been observed. Ladies and gentlemen - we are close. We are still not confirming active labor, but will state all physical signs are headed in the right direction.
The youtube feed will remain online through the process, Facebook LIVE will also provide updates. A professional crew will be onsite to document the birth also.
Again, be patient, she has fooled us before. We can simply suggest staying tuned into the feed, subscribing to the youtube channel, and also our FB notifications. We will do everything in our power to keep you posted.
Staff will remain onsite this evening to stay with April and also begin mitigating snow levels as they begin to pile early tomorrow morning. Stay safe, stay warm, and bring your animals inside!
Photo from Press & Sun Bulletin (pressconnects.com) visit earlier today.
OP below ...
** To curb the significant public inquiry
Approx 12:45 pm EST today staff began noting and documenting significant changes.
The vet was called and has been on site since. Another visit will be made in a few hours.
Staff is taking precautions, with many members remaining onsite this evening through the blizzard.
Rest assured, we will keep the world posted on any further developments.
We cannot confirm active labor at this time.
To watch the true Live stream, go to www.Aprilthegiraffe.com and click the Giraffe Cam link. You will be brought to our youtube channel for viewing. Be certain to subscribe. Should we lose signal mid storm, YouTube will send notice once a new video is up and running.

Carrot Cam
All remains as reported earlier.
Big and happy. We did note significant movement from the calf today during observation times.
April had a few visitors (industry friends) from out of state that were shocked to see just how large she is. The camera just doesn't capture actual size/proportions.

If you haven't yet, it is easy to subscribe and you haven't missed content - you will be able to view prior shared photos! We believe we may have VIDEO content available to text subscribers also! www.Aprilthegiraffealert.com
If you haven't subscribed yet we encourage it! it is a Labor alert and Baby Update opportunity! www.aprilthegiraffealert.com
The week promises warmer temperatures and a full moon is upon us! I hope that will shake things up!

--------------------
All things April the Giraffe are found on her official site - anything else is likely NOT OURS!

Perhaps suggesting a new position of calf...we hope for launch sequence!
......
We can't help but feel each day and night, as we snap and post our photos and provide updates on body change and development of April, that we shouldn't have the song lyrics of Ed Sheeran's Shape of You looped and playing;

Still - all things April are found at www.Aprilthegiraffe.com
Another test alert should be sent out this evening and reach all subscribers. Want to verify that you are in fact properly enrolled in the Labor Alert System? Use this link!
Thank you to the many that have signed on for text alerts for Labor & Baby Announcements. After much discussion, we have decided the initial Gender Reveal will be made via our text alert system as soon as gender is observed post birth. This will be hours in advance of the media press releases.
The text alert system is 100% functioning at this time, and tech support is available to ensure you are in fact subscribed. Go to www.Aprilthegiraffe.com for how to subscribe or receive tech support.
The subscriptions thus far have allowed us to add a significant amount more to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation fund we are compiling. Your support will make a change - and for that we thank you!

Northern Giraffe - Kordofan & Nubian & West African
Reticulated Giraffe
Pictured are April & Oliver - Reticulated Giraffes (though Oliver has some Northern appearance to him)
4/2 Evening Update - a long one
It really shouldn't be much longer, I'm just not going to tell you my guesstimate anymore.
........
There you have it! It's a matter of time! We watch and wait ... still.

To use the official Live Stream - get it through www.ApriltheGiraffe.com
