3/26 Evening Update. Keeper report is increased calf activity in comparison to this morning and last evening. All other development is as previously reported. Appetite is strong and demeanor is good. Staff will spend time tomorrow trying to expedite the yard thaw - to get our giraffes some exposure outside. Stella sure won't let us forget she was here! We expect the online apparel store to open again tomorrow! We will announce the site being back up once we get the word! Hope all had an enjoyable weekend and are ready for another week of April watching! Photo is Oliver stealing a smooch - while April steals some hay! Photo from www.newyorkupstate.com

Oh ouch, I think April was just getting some baby kicks there. She was jumping and twitching pretty hard.

I was SO hoping this weekend would be it. The poor thing just looks enormous and even getting up and down looks challenging for her.

Let's play things you think about while staring at a giraffe's *** in the middle of the night. I'll start:
I wonder just how long a giraffe's birth canal is. When I look at the back end in relation to the kicks it looks like it must go on forever.
Next...

Do we dare hope? I was convinced I saw a string of mucous after she peed a while ago but it was probably just pixels.

I wish someone would come in to check on her. Maybe we could tell something by their reaction if something's going on or not. She was laying down earlier and jumped up all of a sudden. I thought maybe someone had startled her.

Exactly. There's a lot we can't see off camera and once in awhile I see shadows or her looking at something so I'm sure they are very close by. Plus there's 70 000 people probably calling/emailing when they see things happen lol so I'm sure they'd put an update up the moment they knew something was happening. I keep willing hooves to appear. Lol. I need to go to sleep but she's so jumpy I keep thinking it might be close?? Then she lays down. Lol.

I'm glad to see she was finally able to sit down and rest. My legs ache just watching her.

I have to look away when she's getting ready to lie down. It looks so painful, precarious even. I always sigh a little when I peek back and see she's resting peacefully.

Though she doesn't look so peaceful at the moment. Poor Oliver hovering in the background, looks like he's keeping an eye on her, though he's probably just eating

Poor April, I can't imagine how uncomfortable she is. I know I was miserable towards the end of my pregnancies, I'm sure hers is x100! She is well loved and taken care of, that's for sure

I can't help but wonder what AAP is thinking of their new found fame. I doubt they expected this kind of audience when they installed the camera. They're getting food donations, cash donations and probably making a nice chunk of money from the app/shirt sales. But they're also dealing with people critiquing their every move.

3/27 Morning Update April had us watching the monitors close last night. Her behavior was interesting last night, and is noted as continued this morning. She is very relaxed, tail has been raising on and off for periods of time. Wax caps are in place but we have noted a significant mammary change! Photo is comments section! We are getting there! Any changes will be posted throughout the day. Today, we share with you the video link to a highly demanded, up close (but quick) video of April and Allysa. Their bond is evident - a true trusting relationship. Giraffe Factoid: The hoof of a giraffe is about 12" or the size of your dinner plate! Think about that at your next meal!! In the wild, hooves are naturally maintained by the hard and coarse ground surface. In captive management programs, we mimic that natural substrate for hoof care - often why you will often not see green grass (North American grass) in giraffe yards. Their entry and exit from their barn also has a specific material, and the barn floors are finished to promote hoof trimming. If the hoof is not able to be naturally trimmed, giraffes can and will train to stand for the largest manicure you have ever seen! youtu.be/JcGtDo3tZrM

Is anyone watching right now? She's been consistently throwing hay for the last 15 minutes. I actually thought the feed was stuck in a loop.

Well so much for that. She had her tail out and was really waddling for about an hour, lots of little poops & pees. Then baby made some huge lurchy movements and now she's back to her usual self. JUST like my 3rd kid. ha.

Yesterday he like almost galloped around his pen when Allyssa was visiting April. It was like he was all giddy excited. I really hope the snow all melts soon and the outdoor area is safe for them. Oliver looks like he's chomping at the bit to get some outside time. We had three feet of snow on the ground here most of winter. Its amazing how fast a week or two of even 50-60 degree temps can melt it.

I'm thinking it's just an April thing, but why does she do it, I wonder. It's so darn adorable.
