I guess I don't get why amenities need to be gendered. Is there a place for women to gather with "women's tv"? it doesn't have to be gendered- that's why she's trying to come up with a different name for it. When people say 'man cave' they're typically talking about the space with the big-screen tv, sports memorabilia, etc. but it's obviously NOT just for men. eta: and I'm guessing there are plenty of entertainment / relaxation spaces in most retirement communities that are geared (although unconsciously) more towards women's types of activities. I can't think of anywhere in my dad's senior community that is geared exclusively toward women. Off the top of my head, they have a library, a card & board games room, a puzzle room, a pool/billiards room and a movie room. If sports is the theme, I would go for something super general like The Sports Zone or Armchair Athletes. SaveSave

Just a quick question on the back of this - is it intended to be mainly men or exclusively men? I ask not because I have deep rooted issues over this, but am wondering whether the facility intends to 'keep women out', just make it uncomfortable enough for them not to want to bother going in, assume that women don't like sports or just feel that there is too much general talk about knitting and baking in other areas for the poor guys to tolerate??!! What if some militant group of women decide they should be allowed to go and watch sports in the cave? This is a great question. This space will be a room for all to use....however it is designed for the things that interest men whether that is watching fishing, golf, bowling, documentaries on war, home rehab projects, etc. We are doing this because the women will pretty much take over all spaces with all things of female interest. The men get pushed aside by the pushy women. Trust me...it happens. This is the room where they are allowed to loud and rowdy if they want to or if they want to sequester away and play a game of chess. There will always be women (I am one of them) who love to hang out in the cave and watch sports or watch documentaries. I get along better with men then I do with women. Much less drama. Maybe we should just call it the "Drama Free Zone!" We also have a salon, coffee bar, library, game room, aerobics room, yoga room....so we have all of the bases covered.

Is the salon the women's room? Or is there a space specifically designed for women to do things that interest women... scrapping, knitting, baking ?? I know where my mother lived if the local professional baseball or football team or KU basketball was on.. there might be more women than men wanting to watch. The gender allocated areas just seem a bit outdated even for an older generation.

I like "The Lodge" as suggested upthread. That's good.
Nothing with "Legends" in the title as it sounds a little...condescending. Like they're old, which some of them are, but they don't need to be reminded of it. That feels to me like when the teenage bagboy calls me "ma'am". Grrr. lol (I know, I know, what else is he supposed to call me? Hey lady? But still, the first time you're called "ma'am" by a teenage boy, it kind of stings)

Or is there a space specifically designed for women to do things that interest women... scrapping, knitting, baking ?? There is a craft room that is open to all people....just as the cave room is. We will also have a wood shop. I have managed retirement communities for over 10 years....I know that the women tend to take over all spaces. We are just trying to carve out a space that will be a haven for the masculine pursuits of life. We will have over 25 television spread throughout the common space. Everybody will have a chance to watch what they want to. And yes...the women love to watch sports too. I feel like we are going to land on The Lodge or Legend's Lounge....we really like both of these! Leaning towards The Lodge... Now we have to work on names for the rest of the rooms!

I like the Lodge - I agree with the previous poster that Legend's Lounge is a bit much - bordering on condescending. The Hideout was my other favorite - a bit tongue in cheek KWIM.

As someone who is not far off from thinking of retirement communities, I hope the industry is ready for the baby boomers... we think differently than the "mature" or silent generation.

The industry is always changing and will continue to change. Retirement communities being built these days are adding more and more amenities than the standard amenities that have been offered in the past.
Let me pose this question: If you were to move to a retirement community in the next 5 years...what would you be looking for? And for the record...I despise the label "retirement community". Many of us in the industry prefer "active adult community" but then you get into discrimination issues for a senior who has a disability. Truly....this industry is constantly evolving but we are still bound by fair housing laws.
A list of the things that we offer: Salon Sports room Game room Craft room theater with 120 inch tv aerobics room with classes yoga room with classes weight room putting green pool walking/jogging trails great room with 30 foot fireplace/tables for hanging out coffee bar cocktail bar for parties library
Is there anything else that you would want to see?

Is the theater the same an an auditorium where you could hold lectures by guest speakers? You have a coffee bar, but possibly a tea room? Garden/gardening center. Learning center with perhaps rotating exhibits. Perhaps a dance center as well. My parents (and their friends) are retired and love to dance.

The formal dining area, library and all social rooms are pale, light wood stains, huge floral arrangements and upholstery, huge crystal chandeliers. Even the entry Lobby is a feminized version of a hotel. It makes sense with a female majority but I can see the need for some alternatives. I think the men would appreciate an alternative type space. Since there are few units with garage space, I suggest The Garage. Although I like The Cave or The Lodge too. The Lodge is nice because of the connotations about old school men's clubs, but also an outdoors theme. Seems versatile. It's a wise idea to consider adding this space!

Have you thought about offering a great place for the grandkids? I'm thinking how much the residents would enjoy their grandkids begging to go visit Nonnie and Poppy.

But if you offer a sports room and a game room already and women would be welcome in a man cave, what the hell are we debating?? This is getting far too much into the realms of over thinking for the sake of it for me!! Do what we do in the real world and let the men who don't like communal areas overtaken by the women find a little nook of their own because, bless them, they always do! They are quite resourceful without the input of others!! Even the list you give almost divides most by gender anyway.

For the future: Onsite tech support to help with cabling, simple computer issues, problems with cell phones. My FIL was still building computers at 85, now over 90 he often needs help with an iPhone issue or even getting sound system to work when he replaced his tv.
I would expect this to be a growing need.

what the hell are we debating?? We are debating because this is the pea board and that is what happens even when asking a seemingly innocuous question about what to name a man cave besides man cave.

My 89-year-old MIL would love a small area where she could garden at her retirement home. Even just a flower bed. She really misses gardening.

I'd like - more than the "cocktail bar for parties" - a nice pub, with all the appropriate beverages, and NO TVs. A place for conversation and sometimes live (but not overpowering) music.

I've seen plenty of assisted living facilities and nursing homes and they are overwhelmingly "ruled" by the women. It just happens by default sometimes I think. If you look around most places, they are all very floral and have a lot of feminine touches to them - fine legged tables, Queen Anne chairs, etc. I think our aging population is really growing and there is a greater need for all types of assisted living facilities and nursing homes that cater to all types of seniors. My dad has always been an athlete, hunter, fisher, etc. He would LOVE a room like that when the time comes. He loves those war movies and westerns. If you could have cold beer on tap on the weekends, he'd be all over it. Men are also a lot more hesitant to "go to a home" than women are. I really think you have a great idea here that would really appeal to a lot of men and would be a great selling feature. I still like Legends Lounge or The Zone that I posted earlier. Legends may be my first choice because it doesn't mean JUST sports. It can mean military legends, sports legends, hunting, etc. It isn't limited to a team sport. "Hey Joe! Wanna meet up at Legends tonight for that WWII movie?" "Betty, I'm going down to Legends tonight for a game of cards with the fellas." SaveSave
