The industry is always changing and will continue to change. Retirement communities being built these days are adding more and more amenities than the standard amenities that have been offered in the past. Let me pose this question: If you were to move to a retirement community in the next 5 years...what would you be looking for? And for the record...I despise the label "retirement community". Many of us in the industry prefer "active adult community" but then you get into discrimination issues for a senior who has a disability. Truly....this industry is constantly evolving but we are still bound by fair housing laws. A list of the things that we offer: Salon Sports room Game room Craft room theater with 120 inch tv aerobics room with classes yoga room with classes weight room putting green pool walking/jogging trails great room with 30 foot fireplace/tables for hanging out coffee bar cocktail bar for parties library Is there anything else that you would want to see? Pickleball, bocce ball, and shuffleboard courts. Jacuzzi/hot tub. A gazebo/pavilion to gather outside when the weather is nice. If your community is apartments vs. stand alone homes, I would also like: A room with a refrigerator, tables and chairs that can be reserved and used by the residents for family dinners/parties (eg. 20-30 people max). On site laundry/dry cleaning service. An area outside with a couple of picnic tables and a swingset for when young children visit. (and a grill or two, if allowable) A few carts that residents can borrow/use to transport things (luggage, groceries, etc) from their cars to their apartments. I'll go with having a new name for that place. Man Cave is the word DH uses. But someone asked if women self-word their own spaces. Sure we do. Mine is my 'Glass Room'. Everyone needs their very own place where they can pursue their very own interests.
